    I always thought the ending of this movie would've been better if Stryker wasn't Mystique at the end. It would've been a full circle moment and a more meaningful sacrifice that Wolverine made for everyone.

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 Місяць тому +1

      He didn't choose that though, Magneto put him in that situation (so it's not a sacrifice).

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens Місяць тому +5

      I take your point, but I think it would have contradicted the meaningful point revealed by Stryker in X2, that being that Logan essentially volunteered to become Wolverine, choosing to risk his life and identity and memories in order to become a better weapon. They didn't do a lot with that yet, as I recall, but it's a good topic for reflection about where lies the intersection of Logan, Wolverine, and the trauma of both, and what that says about his essential nature and self.
      Throwing-in Mystique as Stryker here opens a lot of possibilities, but doesn't preclude just going with the old timeline, either. There's a lot of interesting threads from these films that were left dangling after "Logan" unofficially ended what you might call "Phase 1" of the X-Men universe, and as the X-Men are merged into the larger MCU, there's a lot of possibilities for developing said threads further.

      it's also a satisfying storytelling element in the sense of "destiny" and helps continuanity or whatever its called because in all the different possible "futures" things end up the same. Wolverine being "destined" to be who he is, he can't escape it. makes him a better character it's been done for thousands of years from greek myths to star wars. i definitely agree it should have been Stryker.

    • @Baiko
      @Baiko Місяць тому +5

      I don't know about the sacrifice, but it definitely muddles the timelines, and creates the question of how Wolverine gets the adamantium then if Stryker is really Mystique.

    • @MarkEvans-xw5ix
      @MarkEvans-xw5ix Місяць тому +1

      @@michaelccozensI don't think it would have contradicted anything. After the timeline was set, presumably this Wolverine in the past wouldn't have any knowledge of Striker, since his future self is no longer in his body.
      Plus having the real Striker be the one to 'save' him from the water gives the story a good way to actually have those original plot lines tie well together, this could be how they both met, how he is introduced to the Weapon Program, and why he feels like he can volunteer.
      That's assuming we all collectively agree to pretend the first Wolverine movie never happened. Since it's potholes are probably the worst out of all the X-Men movies.

    Was so happy to see Charles in a hover chair. The hoverchair made it's first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #167 (December, 1982) but for many of us we were introduced to the hoverchair thanks to the X-Men Animated Series. An iconic yellow hoverchair used by Charles 99% of the time with his normal wheelchair only being shown in flashbacks or old pictures. At the end of this film they even feature a yellow version of the hoverchair Charles used during the Dark Future a fun little call back to the comics and Animated Series.

      @anonymes2884 Місяць тому +3

      Charles would know anyway (because he'd remember being his younger self in this timeline). His "Welcome back" is consistent with either scenario but the Charles that made contact with his past self never existed in this timeline so to me the former is more likely.

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens Місяць тому +2

      Slight correction; I think that's the "past" Charles (ie the one played by McAvoy in this film) that says "welcome back" to Logan. Logan's future consciousness was the only one "teleported" to the past by Kitty Pryde, so it's the only one that "returned" to a completely unknown future timeline. McAvoy's Xavier understood that through his conversation with his alternate-future Stewart self, and so has been waiting patiently ever since for the "new" past-Logan consciousness to one day suddenly merge with (be replaced by? Hard to say) the returning "old" future-Logan. So Logan (or half of Logan?) is still the only one with direct memories of the "dark" Sentinel-apocalypse timeline, as the future Charles he meets would only have knowledge of it via his conversation in the past with his alternate-future self.
      It would be interesting to see someone explore the idea of two Logans of distinct timelines and experiences attempting to reconcile within one mind. Dude's got enough trouble figuring-out his identity when there's only one of him.

    Also, they gave us a fan favorite, Blink, the portal girl in the beginning. In the comics, she had a notoriously short existence. This film draws heavily from the comic Days of Future Past (1981) a storyline that depicted a dark future that was caused by the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly, Charles Xavier, and Moira MacTaggert in the year 1980. Mutants and their allies were then hunted down similar to what we see in this film. In the comic a much older Kitty Pryde (Played by Elliot Page in this film) was sent from the future of 2013 back into her younger body. This part of the story took place in present day during the 1980s when the storyline was released.
    The comic then followed a young Kitty Pryde trying to convince the X-Men that this possible future was real and in the end they were able to stop the assassinations hopefully preventing this dark future. This possible future still exists as it's own alternate timeline known as Earth-811 within the Marvel Multiverse. Marvel did return to this future a few times with the most recent being X-Men: Days of Future Past - Doomsday (2023) a comic series that showcased how everything went wrong post assassinations.
    Seeing an older Kitty Pryde in the Future Past comic was pretty cool as this highlighted her character as a hardened veteran, massive contrast to her younger present day self who at the time was a new character to the X-Men comics so fans were pretty undecide on if they liked her or not. The comic also had a larger affect on the greater Marvel Universe as of course the comics all existed together so The Avengers, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man etc. They all suffered from this dark future as well with the Avengers even resigned to protest against the government's laws towards mutants. They were all wiped out in this alternate future. The Roster is also a little different with Storm leading the team and Wolverine, Colossus, Angel, Nightcrawler, and Kitty Pryde backing her up. The comic does spend far more time in this alternate future which is something I wish the film did but nonetheless still a great film.
    This future is also the home of Bishop, Omar Sy who we see in this film. In the X-Men Animated Series version of Days of Future Past, Bishop was actually sent back in time to warn the X-Men rather than kitty jumping into her past self. The animated Series does a really good job with his character and was my introduction to him, X-Men 90s Days of Future Past is even credited as being superior to the comic itself or equal in quality depending on who you ask.
    *Timeline confusion:*
    preventing the assassination of Trask in this film in short creates a new timeline that branches off in 1973 from the original X-Men we've been following since X-Men (2000). This is the timeline Logan wakes up in at the end of the film, similar Back to the Future but with more extreme changes. The history Logan knows is differant to what happened in this new timeline. From Jean and Scott being alive to who knows what other changes including world history and how Mutants are viewed. They'll just be assets that simply don't line up to the history we know from the original films but we can assume events happened in a similar way.
    Fox pretty much rebooted the X-Men moving forward allowing them to do whatever they want with future films without worrying about the canon of what came before. Deadpool (2016) is the first film in this new timeline and has you've watched Deadpool already you'd no doubt recall being confused on his appearance in X-Men Origins and how it made no sense in relation to Deadpool. We simply put X-Men Origins never happened in this new timeline but similar events did like Logan does have an origin story being Weapon X etc. It's just Wade never became Deadpool during those days but I think both characters could've worked together just like I said Wade was never Deadpool until decades later.
    So Just remember that you're in a whole new timeline now moving forward. First Class being the start of both timelines and then after 1973 they branch off into two separate timelines. But for the most part the events are similar enough there's just some major changes.

    So my guess is that as "Mystique" she chooses to be blonde when not her nude blue self. Yet when thst way, she seems to have black hair with red highlights. Ergo, she may be controlling her hairstyle and color, even when in nude blue mode. 🤔

    Yes, most dwarfism-related conditions are caused by genetic mutations. These mutations can occur in either the mother's egg or the father's sperm during conception. In some cases, the mutation is spontaneous, or "de novo", and occurs in the developing embryo. In other cases, the mutation is inherited from an affected parent. For example, in achondroplasia, the most common type of dwarfism, about 80% of cases are caused by a spontaneous mutation, while the remaining 20% are inherited.

    Peter’s alter ego is Quicksilver. And alternate version of him is in the MCU.
    According to the screenwriter, Jfk’s power may have been a telepathic form of persuasiveness
    Wolverine didn’t remember because with his future self losing hold on the past, his past self came back, who wasn’t aware of everything going on.
    Trask is definitely not a mutant
    Funny you ask what happened to Rogue, there’s an alternate extended version called the Rogue Cut where she’s included in the dark future
    Magneto was injured by a piece of a sentinel, which aren’t metallic in this. That’s why it got through when he protected himself from the debris
    Those with healing factors, like Wolverine, could actually die from drowning, as long as they aren’t recovered before dying
    Logan’s time in the wars, First Class, and then the 70s events of this movie would have happened. Then it diverges into Apocalypse and maybe Dark Phoenix for reasons.

    Notes: I didn't hear you mention the third movie in which Xavier ends up nearly dead! 🤔
    This movie changed that history too! Logan will remember it, though.
    But anyway, hehe! What Charles is doing for Logan now is what Guinan did for Jean-Luc! 😅 She had to wait for him to catch up with her! 😂

    I'm glad I got to see your reaction to "Days Of Future Past". I enjoyed seeing the bond between Charles and Logan. One of the powerful moments was Charles reading Logan's mind, James McAvoy really delivered in that moment. Another powerful moment is Ian's Magneto telling Charles "All those years wasted fighting each other Charles. To have a precious few of them back"

    While it screws with elements with _this particular scenario,_ I never liked the retcon they did to *Wolverine's* claws.
    For years after *Wolverine* was introduced, his claws were not a part of his skeletal structure. He simply had a heightened healing ability, as well as heightened sandia and that's it. It was this healing ability which allowed him to survive the adamantium melding process. While they were at it, they added the claws that made him such a scary beasty!
    When he had adamantium introduced to his body the claws where a separate addidtion. Pure adamantium. A completely separate function.
    Then, sometime in the 90's they give him claws under the edamantium (as if they've always been there… which they haven't.😊
    *EDIT:* it's my understanding an item need not be made of ferrous metal for Magneto to be able to manipulate it. For instance you should be able to lift a man off the ground because of the Earth's magnetic field all around us. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I could be wrong of course.

    ps
    If Wolverines body is destroyed in the future then his younger self will take over again ,waking up very angry because he wont know where he is or what the hell is going on ...

    This was a fun Hollywood adaptation, I just lament their constantly trying to push Mystique to the forefront. The first few X-Men films had her role more accurate. Mystique cannot replicate a mutants' abilities just physical their appurtenance. In the book it's Shadow Cat that makes the trip, not Wolverine. Kitty doesn't actually have any psychic abilities. Always hated the bone claws retcon, even in the later comics.
    *Jen*: You may recall Quicksilver from the 2nd Avengers film (different actor). While both he and Wanda have always been mutant children of Magneto (along with Polaris) Fox had exclusive film rights to the Mutants at the time, so an alternate origin was created to add them to the Disney Avenger's team (where they belonged after they quit the Brother Hood of Evil mutants after the first issue and became good guy & gal).

    Something I learned from reading the comics back in the 90s was that it's not necessarily a great thing to be able to regenerate so quickly. The writers can use these regenerating characters as guinea pigs for extreme amounts of torture, and they DO, and it can even get to the point of the reader/viewer thinking "Wow, okay, maybe I don't want regeneration as a superpower in these stories. It could be used to just torture me eternally...." Those characters are also the ones the writers use to show as the victim of some awful secret/super weapon, as they can demonstrate the destruction without actually killing a character, so the regenerating character starts to become the punching bag b/c he/she is the only one who can take it.

    26:13 This is exactly where the "Rogue Cut" of the movie plays a very special part, and I recommend watching it at some point. With Rogue in the movie, it made it slightly too long for what the production wanted, so they cut her part out, but to many, it played out a lot better than the theatrical cut.

    2014, big superhero movie year.
    But after introducing Guardians of The Galaxy and awaiting the return of the Avengers in the MCU, Marvel/Fox's Children of The Atom were just getting warmed up.
    Based on a classic storyline from 1981 that pre-dates The Terminator (believe it or not).
    The end-credits of The Wolverine (2013) showing the name "Trask" drove people (us fans) nuts because most of us knew who he was, what he would make and where the fate of the universe was going.
    Bryan Singer (pre-controversy, y'all know why) to direct this 5th movie of the series aka "X4" was unprecedented.
    Blending the castmembers of old and new became such a blast.
    Introducing newer characters in both eras to greatly effect history was perfect.
    As always, the constant tones of the film series endure.
    Good and evil, prejudice and tolerance, grief and faith, similarity and difference.
    The hallmarks of the comics, 50 years old at the time, being interpreted as they suppose to be.
    There is an alternate version known as The Rogue cut (2015) which is the complete version of the film that clearly makes it the biggest X-Men film ever.
    It broke several Box office records and became the highest-grossing X-Men film for 2 years, dethroning X3:The Last Stand.
    From here, the evolution goes into overdrive.
    You are going to love the next 3 films.

    This was my favorite. Aside having pretty much everyone it was the story I grew up with. Having the humans capable and foot down on the mutants with the mutants divided and needing to at the same time paint human perception of them. That is a great theme. Also that it is such a large world, using time mostly but all the same another great aspect of the X-Men was always that greater world/factions component of it.

    The Wolverine by James Mangold (Logan) is worth watching as well. Covers one of Logan's most important stories and is only ruined by the studio interference in the finale.
