A documentary about the making of Metal Gear Solid 2. Explaining how the MGS2 game was developed and how certain moments in the game reflect Hideo's personal experience. - Ігри
"I thought he was kidding, but I soon realised that Mr Kojima was serious" that sentence alone is like the whole MGS2 in a nutshell
@Jasiah Trent I AM GOING TO FIND WHERE YOU LIVE FOR SPAMMING
The team also thought he was crazy when proposed MGS 3 to have a jungle setting and wildlife. Esp in 2004 when mgs2's engine mostly did even terrain.

The music for this game still gives me the chills every time without fail.
Mgs 2 changed my life. Played it since 2001 and still playing it In 2019
Same!!
@@EmilyAlwayz just beat it again in 2021. This game is timeless
The Relationship between Hideo Kojima and Metal Gear Solid appears to resemble that of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes: Always trying to get away from it.
@Stefano Pavone he did.
this game is more important than other games to me
Most intellectual game ever
Game ahead of its time!
PS2 games are like that to me~
Holy shit Kojima looks so much younger
+doonglerules well this is from 2001/2002, so..... yeah.
He was 36/37 but looked like 15. Now he's 54, looks like 30. xD
Very odd that they keep saying this was trying to resemble Hollywood. Its depth and artistry is so far beyond anything I've ever seen come out of Hollywood's ass that it's not even funny.
Best game for the ps2 and the most underrated game ever. It blew my mind when i first completed it and made my life
Underrated? I don't think so. It is generally regarded as a masterpiece by critics and sold more than 12 mil copies.
God... I used to watch the hell out of this. I never thought I'd see it again.
+Yasman2 I know! Crazy!
Same!
Kojima is Otacon.
The greatest time of my life playing this game for the first time at a school weekend, wish there were moments like this again.
Still one of my favorite games of all time.
I watched this making of on DVD in the MGS2 game countless times back in 2001 (11 yr old at the time)
I never though the day that I would hear Snake say «Nani» would come
so jack and rose,titanic....of course...now i get it
The memories I have from this game, irreplaceable. Such a pivotal and unforgettable time in gaming history. Nothing since then has quite scratched the itch this one did in my late nights playing this back in 2001.
7:06 CONFIRMED Kojima was a shrek fan
who isn't a sherk fan? Everyone love sherk.
@@Gadget-WalkmenIf you're gonna say that at least spell Shrek correctly
@@Love-Sensibility uh huh, my mistake then.
The beginning was funny because Snake was expecting and assuming Otacon was going to talk to him, but it turned out to be the series creator Hideo Kojima! Lol XD
I love how the tanker sink in the first scenario and then you're using raiden Name Jack and his lover Rose xD. I just figured that out today.
"I thought that a power suit would be a bit much for metal gear solid" *Cue footage of the cocoon, The tanks from rising, and Sahelanthropus*
Great game but my favorite is a toss up between 3 and 4. MGS4 is a game that demands you to uncover it's depths to truly see how great it is, a single playthrough isn't nearly enough.
I love Kojipro's documentaries. Such inspiring people and so much heart put into these games.
N A N I ???
Only a mastermind like Mr. Kojima can create such a spectacular and legendary franchise like MGS. My love and respect for his work.
Thanks for uploading this! really great resource!
This is so awesome, can't believe I'd never even heard about this until I searched it on here
It's interesting to know that Kojima was already thinking about his retreat from MGS direction after MGS2. (have some younger director instead) He was also talking of the same thing in MGS4 documentary, and wanted to create something different. I actually assumed that stupid Konami had kicked Kojima out after MGSV, but now it seems that it was his will to quit MGS direction perhaps.
Yea he was thinking of stopping MGS even as far back as MGS2. Most people think that mentality started in Kojima around MGS3. It started even earlier, as this video is evidence of.
19:12 i wish that this soundtrack wouldve been used in the game, it sounds so good
I love his hairstyle here. Its so dashing
Thank god Chinman did not make it into the game...how the fuck you expain a dragon with nanomachines?
I don't think anything was really meant to be explained so to speak in this game... I mean, the VR theory makes the most sense when describing this game. And no, MGS4 was not in Kojima's head while making this game, he was already thinking of leaving this series.
"We wanted him to be pure, virgin, white..."
My favourite video game, and my favourite video game series!!!
most eye opening game ever.
28:25 Fucking shark stealth!!! That would have been awesome!
and because he failed to pass it on we got mgs4, which is all about the failure to pass on one's will and beliefs.
interesting
Awesome Metal Gear Solid 2 The Making Of A Hollywood Game Video.
Kojima asking Yoji to make Raiden is so Kojima. You can tell he have a director's mind with questionable requests!XD
the end is literally a making of OF the making of. mind=blown
Kojima, love him or hate him but dude has a vision and stick to it.
I played the tanker so often to get to the part with the tanker sinking...
20 years later.
when he did the bait and switch from snake to raiden i was fucking pissed. but luckily the story and game was so well done, i let it slide and raiden as shit as he was, he grew on me as the game progressed. but when we first ran into pliskin, it gave me a sigh of relief that he was in the game after all and i think thats what made me feel alot better.
Kept you waiting, huh?
That vampire thing was explained in MGS4
wow kojima san was soooo cute 15 years ago, almost innocent compared to the guy he is today
As appose to today where he's a playboy pimp, knee deep in bitches?
money is like a disease corrupting innocent minds... i hope im gonna be rich soon
priv1leged I hope you know MGS2 is the highest grossing game in the franchise right? He was rich around this time (whilst making this documentary). MGS3 just gave him more money. He made a loss with MGS4 and made a good profit with MGSV since it was advertised as Kojima's "swansong", so what's your argument? He wanted to stop making MGS games after MGS2 and then after MGS3, but fans kept pulling him back to the directors seat.
If he is as you say he is, then why would he not want to milk his creation and get every single penny squeezed out of it? You can tell his heart wasn't into it with MGS4 and MGSV, the writing just got sloppy and allot of contradictions cropped up everywhere.
i admire him as a genius to spit his employers in the face. you could say he showed the milking industry how its done and that he has much more in store
Thought they'd show something that was cut because of 9/11, oh well. Still a great documentary! ;)
Y2K Japan is whole different time. What a trip~
Memories ❤️
Does anyone know if you can get this documentary on a DVD? If so, where do you find it?
it came with the original PS2 game.
The regular game, or on some limited edition version
AcyraxJ The regural game.
+AcyraxJ You can find it in the european game which came later than the US version.
Kojima showed allot of love to Europe since we got the game late and I remember this DVD with the normal edition, it's literally one of the best extra features a game developer could pack with his game. It really gives you a good insight into the mind of a genius and how he tackles problems as well as his creativity.
thats just the best game ever for me
the thing he wanted is to stop directing metal gears and letting his team continue the job, but lets face it, he directed all the other metal gear games and will continue to do so despite what he says, hes very passionate and has a very specific vision for his baby, so yeah, i don't really believe he "didn't want" to make mgs3 or 4... and i agree about mgs4, some parts are a bit dull, and there is away to much cutscenes, more then 1/3 of the whole game actually... but its still fun to play IMO.
The voice of hideo kojima is change
I've never tried to compare snake and raiden, I've always admired Snake, that's all.
Me too. I never compare, I love Raiden wholeheartedly
I liked raiden.
Who's here because of the Gameranx top 10 from 2001 video?
nanomachines son
I like memories of mgs2
wow good documentary but i didn't know he has a kid!
Difícil de achar o making of do TPP
Where can I find the music at 9:20?
Look up "MGS 2 - "The World Needs Only One Big Boss! (Original Mix)".
I gotta say, the Raiden drawings have his thighs be thicker than they have any right to BE!XD
The Chinaman seems like a cool character.
A long time ago I saw a prerelease video that featured different music for when he jumped off the bridge at this part 2:35. Been looking for it everywhere but can't seem to find it on UA-cam. Whatever it was, I actually liked it better than the final version as I'd watched it like a thousand times before release and was really disappointed that it was changed. If anyone here knows the video that I'm talking about, I'd really appreciate it if you could point me to it.
god bless that man :)
2019?
46:49 Cecile Caminades
Kojima is god 🤤😲🤣🤣🤣 #kazfrompeacewalker
15:19 lmao.
Yeah, he's gay curious. Or maybe bi. Or looking for a father figure.
wtf I didnt know Kojima jad children?!
いいセンスだ!
19:26 Vamp hits the dab!
Hahahahaahahahahaha
Michael Biland omfg..lmao
Not really. I would have preferred if Vamp stayed a supernatural character, not some nanomachines bullshit.
Vamp being a complete mystery was what kojima wanted. But fans... dear fans gave us mgs4 and now everyone's pissed and still blame kojima.
@@VincentBrooks437Ah fuck that. They all praised him like he's some otherwordly being then the second he shows his vision, they let him down. And these dumbasses still aren't aware why they got a game they hate. Its like Indians polluting the so-called "River Goddess". Worship like hell, yet they did the river dirty
wow
Why are all game devs good at drawing?!
But I stink at it though
+kricku
You need to have some amounts of creativity and intelligence in order to produce quality code. With both of those it's not that hard to sketch some arts.
I still never liked the bait & switch.I wanted to play as,Snake. Or at least parts of the game.
so you didn't like mgs3 nor mgs4 eh?
i don't think thats true, despite whatever small evidence you gathered here and there... oh well this is not very important, whats important is big boss's storyline, good thing hes working on that...
15:38 But after we played for two or three hours... < translation for 2017 > But after we played for 100 or 200 Hours...
Realism yeah right... hiding in an orange box for cover :P (loved the game though)
That went over you head...the THEMES of MGS have always been realistic and is a direct parallel to our own world, yes some elements may be heightened and exaggerated (because its a frikkin game) but it's realistic in that sense. Also...hiding in a box for COVER defines it's purpose...you are hiding and therefore it's a successful attempt to hide, is it practical? Hell naw...but we're not discussing that are we?
kojima has alot of gamera fiugures
Making of a hollywood game? HAHAHA hollywood wishes :D
Vamp kind of looks like Dr. Strange
The humanoids 🤖 they came out from an obsession with realism 🤔
Hollywood Kojima!
mgs 2 is a grt game but it is so weird it has freakin vampires ,
I have a love/hate relationship with MGS2. Loved the tanker hated everything else. To me it’s massively overrated but then what do I know. MGS3 all day for me.
mgs3 is the most overrated. Basic plot and basically rip off Rambo First blood and II. 2 is the best
@@Amar-ux7gi I think 3 is an amazingly balanced game, where everything just worked. Characters, music, story. 10/10 game. But I do hear you, MGS2 has that depth.I remember waiting for it.. picking it up when I was 15 with all the money I had. I guess you know the rest. It kinda shapes you. Years later you see all these new meanings, and predictions that came true. Most of that flew over my head at the time. I would say objectively 3 is the best game, but 2 is my fav.
@@Amar-ux7gi you are selling 3 way too short imo.
2 is a post-modern masterpiece, with immense depth and almost prophetic real world relevance.
But 3 is not much different either. It's just that its depth is better hidden behind a deceptively simpler narrative, flashier and more colourful.
LA LI LU LE LO?
won't help him :)
that intro is both hilarious and awful
i miss the old kojima, the old games...everything changed ñow to casual..everything is just shiny grafx and westernized 😟
WTF? No it's not. The mgs has always been westernized with a mix of Japanese aesthetics. And no it's not just "graphics" or "causal", the games have gotten more and more complex in gameplay.
Bro stop making shit up and pulling shit out of your ass.
Looks like your bitching just for the sake of bitching.
LudicrousKid Compare MGS5 to older MGS titles...MGS5 was heavily westernized it almost looked like it was made by western studio with a Japanese character designer “cuz westerns suck at character designing”...
and no, older MGS “1,2,3,4” games weren’t westernized..the writing, characters, gameplay, epic cutscenes and music they all felt Japanese to the core, outside of game’s settings, characters names & nationalities of course.
alwaysalone soki I still have no idea what your talking about? They all have a western vibe alongside with japanese aesthetics towards them. I have no idea what you mean by “western don’t do character design right” comment so what you mean?
Mgs5 takes place in the outskirts base one the sea, while having missions in Afghanistan and Africa. Typical American Hollywood stuff that you would see the films but then you have crazy stuff like a giant flaming whale, a man on fire riding a unicorn, superhuman dust soldiers, a psychic kid doing crazy stunts, gadgets like the chicken hat to evade enemies, and water gun to jokes and laughs to mess with the crowd. And many other stuff like beating the shit out of your men for them to salute you, a bionic hand that fire off at enemies, and a cool idroid gadget during the 80s that can play 80s music during the ride or on a helicopter.
Also those cartoony Fulton balloons to take people with you that’s addictive as hell.
This is VERY crazy Japanese stuff.
How is it not?
No other western games studio does this kind wacky stuff to it which add the surrealism appeal of metal gear.
What you said about 1-4 also applies to mgs5.
If you don’t like 5’s story that’s fine but don’t act like it’s any else metal gear.
@@alwaysalonesoki1217 japanese raised girl here. I can tell MGS is not Japanese culture based at all, actually it's designed like you would in a western type movie, comic, or whatever, I can't see anything that is truly maded with japanese culture in mind, even the mechas in the series are westernized. Actually the fifth game and Peace Walker does have japanese themed things in them, of course mixed with western concretely American action style (srry for possibly bad English, not my main language).
This looks more like a marvel video game
What 😂😂 How? Lol
Damn, ngl this was a pretty disappointing doc, especially considering how interesting the game and its development are. This might as well just be "The Making of an Action Movie" whereas MGS2 is far more than just some random big-budget production. Though at the same time, I'm glad Kojima doesn't go in-depth here about trying to interpret the game and its themes, as that would obviously go against the spirit and message of the game itself
This doc came with the game back in the day when it released on DVD. It was just so ahead of it's time. I mean I played the game, being 15 ^^ watched this doc afterwards. It was a great look into how the game was made. But who knew how spot on things would be 20 years later. I sure had no clue. Felt like pure fiction to me at the time! I think all the extra depth came out only recently. Also back in the day, to see the Kojima and his team walking around in his studio was a treat. You had NO picture of it before. Or how they were thinking about it all. It was still the dark ages of the internet back then. This extra DVD that came with the game.. I'm telling you. It was awesome. There was no other information out there in 2001.
The most redpilled game ever made.
Man you can clearly see mgs2 was the last real mgs game out there kojima was full of youth and creative things, mgs2 was the best every shit thing started with mgs3(story).
Albert Agreed, it messed with the tone
I bet you are one of those people who shitting mgs 2 when it first come out
You can tell for sure. Kojima wanted this to be his last game as the director, but fans just can't get enough
Great to play, but the story and the VR subject was a let down, and a bore.
you just dont get the true meaning of the story lol
Such a good game from beginning to near-the end up until they screwed up the plot and storyline making it leave a sour taste in my mouth. Still, it has some pretty solid gameplay.
qsqua Emphasis on Solid?
+qsqua do you mean the screwed up the plot and storyline from mgs 2 going into mgs4
azizrampage
Yeah. The whole Patriot AI thing was poorly explained and shoehorned into the end at the last minute. If they had set it up from the beginning of the game then it would probably work. I still don't actually know the whole story behind MGS4 and now I really don't care. I play it for the gameplay.
Too smart for you?
so they screwed it up because you don't understand it ? ... ok then.
A major spoiler in the first 4 min of video, good job !
0:10 Spoiler warning. Good job.
+Fanático What the fuck did you expect?
