Same. Randomly remembered this song the other day. I used to listen all the time back in 2011. They went on tour around then and I went to see them. By some crazy bad luck, the show got cancelled the night of because something happened with the other band. Still bums me out to this day I missed them!
Fact fans! Although the sample (guitar + strings) is indeed from 'Phonecall' by Jon Brion, he sourced the guitar sample from an early 70s keyboard called an Optigan which used optical flexi discs (hence the crackling) to play different sounds . Jon Brion, Aimee Mann, Neil Finn/Crowded House have used the samples from the Optigan extensively in recordings.
This song somehow resonates my melancholy heart. Not in a sad way, but in a very unknown lost way. when i donno how i am feeling but definitely not ecstatic
Im goin to see The Radio Dept. Nov. 9th, and since this band is playin too this is the first time I am hearing this band...The Eternal Sunshine reference just won me over the second I pressed 'play'.. Cant wait to see them.
Just heard this for the first time a few days ago... and according to my spotify ticker, I have already listened to it 224 times. I'm right behind you :)
I think... it's two sides of the same girl. The part of her that wants to remain young and pure forever, while the other side that is elated because she's found love. It's a battle between two sides -part of her is unsure. The other part wants to convince her that this could be a great thing; that the two halves can coexist. At the end... the part of her that is unsure doesn't win. She decides to go ahead with love anyway. The lyrics point that way too: "Shut me off, shut me up."
GuppyG Ah, wow. I’m glad you can see it too. I wrote that comment so long ago I’d forgotten entirely that I’d posted it. A lot has happened in seven years and I can view this video similarly, but I know life experience has changed how it feels. Hope you’re safe and well. Ah, thank you for reminding me about this great song I loved back then.
I adore this track, now, if only I could buy a CD of thiers in a UK shop, all would be right in the world! And yes, there are websites to buy from, and I do, but certain stuff is never in stock in old fashioned shops, and i like to browse! Rant over!
i dont' know but i think this version sucks. I mean it's a cool song but they should have left it with out the john brion sample. to me that sounds so much better on it's own.
I cannot stop listening to this track, such a lovely chilled out number. You should search 'Paper Boats - Morning Image' if you're into these guys, they've got a cool similar sound.
@rdehyah uhh im not sure which is which but if im not mistaken this "younger" side that exits is not the younger side. it was "mature" side that exited.
@monsieurTransistor it's atmospheric music with a lo-fi edge remeniscient of 80s sounds. beauty in simplicity mate. try listening out for the subtleties like the guitar filter effect at 3.05
love this clip from Jon Brion's, Phone Call. Pretty simple sample that other bands use in their music. I just found another one where they sped it up a bit; it's fun. If you want to check it out, the band is, The Most Serene Republic, and the song title, Photocall. I'd love to purchase it, but I have to settle with a youtube conversion that is only so so quality. Anyway, cheers.
The ‘pink’ girl is in love when she types out a heart and puts it on the wall. The other girl becomes distant. The pink girl tosses the ball as if to say ‘hey, I’m still here nothing’s changed’ but the girl with the bangs doesn’t even look at her, the pig is her new bestie. They play games at night to show they both miss each other at the end the envelope is like the boy saying ‘I love you too’ so it really is time for them both to move on, so she stops playing their game to be with the boy.
no credits for Jon Brion? the guitar that runs the entire song was sampled from "Phone Call" which appears in the movie soundtrack, "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind".
13 years later and this sing still hits the same. Really wish I could have seen them back in 2011-2012

I think this is the best analysis so far. If they werent wearing that same red dress, i would think otherwise

sublime.
stolen from eternal sunshine of a spotless mind
Orrrrr Jon Brion, I get what you're saying though.
it's called sampling. not that uncommon. not stealing, though.
Tee Kay Yeah, I wasn't saying it was stealing just saying that the Eternal Sunshine sountrack was done by Jon Brion.

Is that "Phone Call" of Jon Brion in the background?
Yes they sampled it
@rdehyah uhh im not sure which is which but if im not mistaken this "younger" side that exits is not the younger side. it was "mature" side that exited.
O vídeo sugere a ideia de um triângulo amoroso. A música é melancólica .

Lovely. The guinea pig was the best XD
Fall Is coming.
I am pretty sure it is! I thought the same.
@laloali2 - you are right so called 'mature' one is the one who left. and good theory, could be on to something with that.
I never knew the beginning is from that song in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Why isn't this on there band channel? i find a lot of there most viewed songs are not there plus this offical music video of thers..
22k views how??!!!!!! 🤯🤯🤯. This song is amazing!!!!!!!
Jay electronicas sample captures more of the emotional content of the sample with his song "the pledge"

@infinitecomplete I heard it was the other way around- Jon Brion sampled the guitar from this song, No?

God, they sampled Phone Call beautifully.
@XpRnz that riff is the core of the song ...
