To me, I think the film portrays a young, innocent girl, or a young girl. The bird represents a boy who loves her very much and gives her his heart. But, the girl just takes his gift. She doesn't necessarily want or appreciate it. She's too young to realize what she has. The bird realizes this and knows she is going to fall victim to the storms and evils of the world on her "journey" through life. We see her get tired in the woods and sit down as if she has given up. Then suddenly she hears the music coming from the skeleton and she moves forward dropping the gift of his love and protection and ultimately falling for the evils of the skeleton which will lead to her downfall.
I lost a great friend today. Her last wish was for her friends to look in the mirror and listen to this song. R.I.P Becky :(

Watching this and listening to the music gives me sweet memories
It's sad but I think it's about betrayal/cheating. The bird/man gives the girl his heart/love (probably for a second time, giving the girl another chance at their relationship but knows when she goes out that she might be unfaithful again, hence the crying.) The storm is probably a constant reminder of his hurt. When she falls asleep she remembers/dreams when they were happy together (the storm is gone) but "temptation" (the skeleton) is in the distance. This was probably the first time she betrayed him. She comes out of her dream only to be awoken by the tragic singing of more "temptation," this is the second time she betrays the man and drops/breaks his heart/love. She betrayed him. Twice. She turned her back on him. Twice.

Oh man, after listening to this over and over trying to interpret song and video I have another explanation in case you aren't feeling my other one.
"Falling flat on your face but not losing..." The woman could have attempted suicide once. The bird could be a doctor/psychiatrist who after hospitalization and therapy gave the woman back the "gift of life." The bird/Doctor knows how 'fragile' she still is and knows there is nothing more he can do to really help her so he discharges her and sends her on her way. After moving on with life the woman starts to feel depressed again, hence the rain. When she stops to meditate she may be thinking about her therapy sessions with her doctor and remembering the steps they would go through to help her get passed the episodes. But the depression is too overcoming, she drops the gift, turns her back on "life" for the second time. Twice.
+DutchessSarahJ I think you have the right theme, but I interpret the outcome differently (I think it says she came back to the original boyfriend when she realized that she loved him, and even after all that she put him through, he still loved her). She either cheated on him or dumped him twice. She says she doesn't really know why she left him, questioning was it this or was it that. She admits that she thought she had an answer but fell flat on her face...in other words she thought she wanted someone else, but she realized that those feelings were wrong in the end...BUT despite falling on her face, she "didn't lose"...she realized that she fucked up by leaving, but she "didn't lose" which to me says she didn't lose the original boyfriend...he was her true love and she didn't lose him despite her hurting him twice...in the end she came back and he was still there for her.
She doesn't really know why she left him...there were "colossal signs so i got lost" which to me says that they were in love but she was probably young and wasn't ready for that at first and she maybe got scared of that love being real, hence her saying she got lost..."With so many lovers singing soft", meaning she started to distance herself from that relationship and look for other guys in order to relieve that fear...she jumped to another guy because she freaked about about getting too close to her original boyfriend.
I think it's pretty clear that she comes back to him when she realizes that he is her true love, and he still loves her and they get back together. She questions him "Tell me what led you on I'd love to know"...she is wondering how he could have continued on with what she did to him...she is asking how could he still love her despite what she did to him?... which suggests that he obviously does still love her. And she realizes that she loves him and him alone by asking "Tell me where would I go"...She left him but now that she realizes her mistake she wonders, without him, where would she go?
And then she repeats the line "One mirror holding us dearer now", which paints a pretty clear image...two people casting one reflection...together, as a couple. And "dearer now" meaning stronger than before, which makes sense because she doesn't take the relationship for granted anymore, she is actually allowing herself to be a part of it now that she saw how genuine his love for her was and now that she too realized how genuine her love for him is in return.
The imagery of the video also tells this story to me...with her leaving the skeleton man and having that fling with the birdman...yet at the end returning to the skeleton. After her fling with the birdman is over, she is lost again in the woods, alone, but she follows the music to find the skeleton man...the music symbolizes his love for her, and she sees it and follows it, hoping to get back what she regrettably threw away. When she comes back to him, he is standing at the top of a hill and she has to approach from below...she returns to him in a low position, which reflects her disloyalty, but she can climb back up to meet him at a better place, the top of the hill. He is still facing her and playing music which shows that he still loves her and accepts her.

I'd just like to let you know how many memories of mine are held in this video. My mom passed away last Spring and she used to sit with my 6 year old brother and watch this quite a lot. What you're portraying here, now that she's gone, really reminds me that life is a gift and shouldn't be taken for granted. I miss her a lot but it's really nice that I can watch this and be reminded of her, I just thought you may like to know that. Thank you.

I always listen to this when I'm feeling down, and it makes me tear up and then I feel better. I just dunno why it makes me sad, but it's definitely my favorite by them.
95% of people here think this video was made for this song. It wasn't. The video is from a portion of a short film called "Dreams from the woods." The song and the video both convey two different meanings entirely, although I will say that the video captures the mood of the song nicely, and visa-versa.

People say that you can interpret this music video the way you see fit, so I'll interpret it my own way: The girl is in love with the bird. The bird gives her his heart(the present). She cowers away and leaves him(then he cries). They had a good time and they enjoyed each others company(when they fly in the sky), but when times got though she started having doubts(when the rain comes). She finds a new love and lets go of his heart(when she lets the present fall down the hill). Story of my life. I'm the girl.... *ashamed*

I interpret this video as the bird giving the little girl the gift of life & they're sad when she leaves to go explore the world. & when they're flying they're exploring the world together(which I think is past tense) she gets lost & caught up into the music the skeleton is playing almost like seduction but not in a sexual way & she loses her self(when she drops the gift) to the skeleton which symbolizes death so it's like she lost her soul. That's just my perspective

It's a song about life. It has the meaning you'll give it as life in itself draws so many different interpretations. To me it's the story of a little girl, who received the gift of life from her parent(s) (represented by the bird as the little girl leaves the nest). Then as the little girl embarks on this amazing journey that is life, she falls into desperation, get lost and settles in a quiet life that ends as she encounters her death and let go, or is forced to let go, of the present that her parent(s) gave her.

She also questions why She cheated. yet by the end of the song and after being put out she still becomes entranced by the other lovers' song and drops the gift which I think is her lover's unconditional love.

i used to watch this video when i was in college, it brought me some kind of comfort. today over a decade later, i'm sitting at my full time job and the album i was listening to on spotify finished, and they played this song. i don't remember the last time i heard it. i immediately remembered this video, looked it up, and saw the link was purple. i feel emotional and nostalgic watching this. what a truly incredible piece of art, both the song and the video, but especially the combination.

Finally great to hear the original version of this song after having heard Lianne cover it all this time. I think the arrangement of this one is pretty immaculate-sounding but it doesn't flow as much as Lianne's cover does. She gives the song it's room to breathe to me. This version, even though it's the original, feels a bit rushed.
