My sons mom chose drugs and alcohol over him. I overdosed and almost lost my life in 2017. When she says “Lucy’s underground she’s got a mouth to feed. Lucy’s underground she’s never coming backkk”, it gives me the chills starting from my spine. I chose to face my demons and here I am 6 years sober from hard drugs. I started listening to this song in the beginning of it all. It brings me back to a moment of uncertainty and I was so scared to do this on my own. Personally i think the song is about the struggles of being in an in-between place. The narrator is reflecting on feeling uncertain and caught between a "Lucy's underground" and the surface world, searching for a way out. They refer to the pull between these two worlds as the "fire," and ultimately opt to stay within it because they believe it is better than the alternative. The chorus speaks of surrendering to the uncertain journey and embracing the freedom of being "small." The song is ultimately a call to embrace the unknown and to enjoy being caught in between: being small is a reminder to stay humble and small in the great chaos of life, and always look for the beauty and love that lies within it. An amazing song and so addictive.

This song was on repeat when I left my abusive baby daddy. 11 years later my son and I are doing better than I could’ve ever imagined. If anyone reading this thinks they can’t get away you can.
I'm like 50 years old, but 42 years ago, my Mom did the bravest, most terrifying, and deadly dangerous thing possible: she got us out of and abusive house with my birth father. She still bears emotion scars, had jumpiness & anxiety without relief, and is overly-fixated on making sure I get home safe from my doctor's appointments & that on payday, I was sure to pay EVERY bill...but never overbearing. It's how he broke so much of her, she shows love this way. I have my own issues, but have a psychiatrist, take my meds without fail, and been in weekly therapy for over 6 years now. Even at my age, healing can begin. But my Mom is my HERO. I can never tell her that, and why, because of what life was for us. What I can do is never get impatient with her irrational fears when they occur randomly 1 or 2 times a month, tell her how much I appreciate her looking out for me consistently, and we aren't...physically huggers...because of that stuff back then. But you can show affection, my friends, by a real smile, with sincere eyes...when she can muster eye contact, but even that's improving slowly over time, even 4+ decades after getting us out. Not that that didn't leave court case, horrific actions by him, and continued attempts at violence & intimidation. But she didn't flinch ever then. My Mom, regardless of what scars she carries, will always be the perfect Mom for me. I *like* myself now, over 40+ years and weekly therapy for nearly 7 years, and meds...and I can show her that, which is the greatest, AND ONLY, gift she has ever asked me for. She doesn't like to receive gifts, she feels it's too expensive, or that she wouldn't merit them (though no self-conscious word or those sorts has ever left her mouth!) She says only one thing of him: without him, there'd be no Me. So no matter what, it was all worth it. All of it. Just because she could do right by me as a parent, he couldn't, and I didn't deserve that life (never mentions herself the same way, though it was undoubtedly worse for her than me!) SOOO...yeah, Phantogram is both to my music taste, but greater still, they give my Mom a Voice she could never, nor would seek out, for herself. tl;dr: Tough, read it or don't!
I walked into a Doc Martens store and heard this song playing. I didn't have my phone so I couldn't Shazam it or find a way to know what it's called. It took me a week of just playing it over and over in my head to finally track it down. Something about it just hit me at my core.
This song reminds me of this woman who manipulated me into serving her demons for well over a year and a half.. I was a heartbroken teenager, she was sixty year old divorcee. We fed each other's addictions, alcohol, heroin, crack, meth, you name it. She fed into my trauma and demonized my mother who was only trying to help. My innocence was lost in those streets and hotels and trips... if only I could take them back. I will always remember the triumph of breaking up with her on the phone on her birthday, telling her that she is my gangrene and I had to amputate her. It's been over a decade now, and I am just now learning the word of trauma bonding. If anyone reading this feels stuck in something they know they shouldn't be in, I guarantee you that somewhere in there you have the courage to leave your abuser, and trust me you won't regret it.
Just seen them live, they opened for Qotsa in Detroit. First time I heard of this band. I absolutely loved them, they put on a great show and definitely gained a new fan in me.

The popular music game has been a monopoly since a while. Because its easier to stream music and video, its easier to feed bullshit to people and keep them hooked. They just have to make sure the hype doesnt die and find creative ways to supply. Still folks who appreciate good music will find it, cheers for making a brilliant point
@@ronaktripathi6332 And one more thing...in actual matter of fact, my view is the 'feeding bullshit to people' is actually having a very serious and damaging effect on how society is progressing. Take for example the Motown era...the music meant something, had a social conscious, implored to people to think a bit (hey whats going on?) and thus really propelled the citizens toward greater civil responsibility...voters rights, peaceful coexistance, etc. etc. Not all top 40 is guilty here but my main point is that where I live, their are about 5 stations that keep playing the same 70's 80's and 90's stuff over and over again...in fact I can actually guess what the station is playing before I turn it on...and these are the bands that have ALL the money...stones, ACDC, Led Zeppelin etc...but even then...you almost never hear obscure and awasome bands from that period on these stations...just a sad state...needs to CHANGE! Cheers!

All of it. Just because she could do right by me as a parent, he couldn't, and I didn't deserve that life (never mentions herself the same way, though it was undoubtedly worse for her than me!)
SOOO...yeah, Phantogram is both to my music taste, but greater still, they give my Mom a Voice she could never, nor would seek out, for herself.
tl;dr: Tough, read it or don't!
"I'd rather die than be with you" perfectly said love.
I walked into a Doc Martens store and heard this song playing. I didn't have my phone so I couldn't Shazam it or find a way to know what it's called. It took me a week of just playing it over and over in my head to finally track it down. Something about it just hit me at my core.
This song is Beautifully haunting, and that rocking Guitar Riff elevates it even more.
Yeah, a bass guitar
A voice, a song, a group way ahead of its time ❤
This song reminds me of this woman who manipulated me into serving her demons for well over a year and a half..
If anyone reading this feels stuck in something they know they shouldn't be in, I guarantee you that somewhere in there you have the courage to leave your abuser, and trust me you won't regret it.
power to you, always 🖤 xx
Godspeed brother
Trauma bondage hmm first time I ever heard of it, but totally described my experience
You must have made it a long way out of those depths to be able to share honestly. Thank you for the encouragement.
You will find someone great.
Stumbled upon this song today, Sunday February 26, 2023, it's so nostalgic. Can't place where I've heard it before but I love the feeling it gives.
Suits
@@VenGooner I haven't watched any full episodes of Suits yet, just shorts on UA-cam. Thanks for responding tho 😊
Infedlix Anthem for the lost?
@@Shaniecey1 do yourself a favor girl, watch all of Suits. It's an excellent show. They play this at the end of episode......
She has perfect hair!!

Lendeczki Istvan Vendel ur a perv :/
Hope Rayann How can he be a perv when they take up 75% of the video? :)
Just seen them live, they opened for Qotsa in Detroit. First time I heard of this band. I absolutely loved them, they put on a great show and definitely gained a new fan in me.
Living proof that the media/entertainment industry is oppressing genuine talent.
lol this has almost 30 million views.
@@felipea.dieppa7296 UHHh Felipe...Did you ever hear Phantogram on the radio once during the 2000s??? NO! Did you know that virtually one guy ( Max Martin) wrote all the hit pop songs in last few decades? That is why they all sound the same. That was my point...all the classic radio stations keep playing the same old SHite over and over again from the 70's, 80's and 90's. UA-cam is not considered the 'Media/Entertainment Industry!' It is a social media company where private citizens upload their own videos.

One Man Has Written Virtually Every Major Pop Song Of The Last 20 Years. And You've Probably Never Heard His Name By Max Savage Levenson on August 18, 2020 in Articles › Entertainment"
@@ronaktripathi6332 I concur! Tally Ho! All the best to you!
Cheers!
Pandora bought me here. I really needed another band like this to enjoy. Today was a good day!!!
Put this on my CD for a day trip through BC and Alberta my senior year. Still takes me back to those empty, winding roads and beautiful mountain faces, and drinking a beer as I sat by the river.
How to create something truly unique and endlessly magical. I love this band to no end. Just like Black Out Days and Mouthful of Diamonds… Perfection.
Honestly these youtube nostalgia trips are so appreciated, after 10 years this somehow slaps just as hard.
I like the way she dances, so profound
I agree, along with the song, it's amazing. Raw talent, unlike a lot of the music we see nowa days.
I hope your being sarcastic!!
Lol yeah I was, not to be rude but she dances funny and the music kind of makes it a bit more funny
Bruce Key
I hope you're* not going to sound like a moron next time you try to make fun of someone.
Poor liber ;(
My word she is something else.
Damn gorgeous
perfect breasts
Boobies and Ranch
Both are:)
I had definitely heard the song before on Pandora, commercials, TV shows etc… but never really paid attention to it. Well I just saw them perform, they’re on tour with Kings of Leon and it was awesome ! This song , live is out of this world
i love how the intro makes people raise the volume then it kicks in, beautifully gritty and her soft vocals gently carries us through the rhythmic ambient sounds. Phantogram consistently produces modern audio for the masses always leaving me excited for the next song.
Am I the only one watching Phantogram's videos for the first time?
And taste for good music brought me here btw.
4/16/19 here on my own. At 0:13 knew this was a banger. Played over a dozen times in a row like a teenager again. Her dancing scared me at first but I was hypnotized by the end.
I knew them bc of my brother who used to play it at his car while driving me to school. I started playing it myself while playn bioshock infinity.
Why has it taken me forever to find this? Its life changing!
Sarah is a goddess!!
So powerful ❤
This song will never get old...love these two.
I Love her hair!
Miss Knowles the most beautiful woman ever created,!!!!
Miss Knowles I fucking love you. Marry me!
Hair = boobs?))
So do I!! And I'm a straight man, former suit, in my late 50s. 😎
French bob... kinda.
The nostalgia. 16 years old walking down the hallways of my old high school with my iPod blasting to phantogram feeling like a rebel
OK I know the feeling but in Athenian streets during the summer just before sunset

I first heard this in an ad for Microsoft Surface and instantly had to find out the band who made it. Over a decade later and I just saw them perform it live. Love this band.
Phantogram is so underrated
Yes. Very mild on ears. Perfect balance of sound frequency and the tune and musical instruments. Won't get tired listening to it.
33 million views I don't think she classifies as underrated anymore lol
oops my bad, 34 million on this 1 uploaded version of this song alone
coz hes a self loving ashole...but heh igive stuff
That shift to Eb at @2:44 … GOOSEBUMPS…
I’ve been within an arm’s length of Sarah and Josh performing this beast of a song… 🥹
thank you suits. if it wasnt for you using this song so well i never would have searched for it and i dont think i could have lived without it
Love the contrast of artistic styling in this vid. She's full of energy and shaking her tips everywhere, and he's like yea, she just does that.
I was soooo obsessed with this song when i was 16 (7 years ago), i totally forgot about it and i heard it suddenly on the radio the other day. So glad i found it again, felt like i found something lost...
She’s so unbelievably attractive and I love her hair.
I commented again oops! Well no matter.
For real, she was reaally putting her hair to work in this
They're both really attractive people, no doubt.
Yeah but she changed her hair after and the magic dissipated
She loves her hair too. Just leave it be.
I remember hearing this blaring out of the local high schools football field during a game one night... It took me at least 2 years to finally find it. Been returning ever since
Obviously a very emotional experience for Ms. Barthel, the tears in her eyes at the end of the track are testament to the power of the music, as well as the words.
Fantastic piece of song writing.
The bass in all of their tracks is always 🔥🔥🔥 this song makes me feel so many different emotions
Shes so pretty it hypnotic!
Would you?
it's amazing how she expresses this song
Thanks you Pandora for playing this song for me and letting me discover this wonderful band.
"I'd rather die than to be with youuuuuuu" has to be my favorite part
Fascinating how this song is soo nostalgic even after listening to it for the first time 😅
Because it was a much more simple time lol
They used this song on a ubiquitous Gillette commercial. It played a lot everywhere, but especially if you watch sports.
@@tomfoolery5680 Thank you
Look up infidelix - anthem of the lost. Remix is smokin’
I've heard this song many times over the years. Had no idea who the band was. Now I do!
Got here by sheer curiosity in a chill mood. Didn't expect something this deep, made me look her up, she's really letting her feelings out with this piece.
I miss my dog Lucy who passed a couple years ago. Don't know why but this song brings tears while listening and thinking of her. Best dog I ever had. Loved her so so much
My awesome taste in music brought me here, long before suits and gillette...

I just come here because I love phantogram
Alex Meulenbeld Phuckn Phantasic
+Alex Meulenbeld me too, but this video kind of killed that.
Alex Meulenbeld I went to there concert it was so lit
Yeah I saw them at hangout fest once, easily one of the best shows of the whole weekend. Their albums are great, but something about the way they preform live really does take their music to the next level
Alex Meulenbeld probably watched this video 3 dozen times
I lost count of how many times I've listen to this song. Astounding.
damn...13,000,000 million plus views now? I was here when there was less than a million. Keep going Phantogram.

It's one of those perfectly tailor-made songs. I heard for the first time - and felt like I've known it all my life.
Agreed
For more perfection created by Sara check out Big Grams. You're welcome.

I love big grams too. Lights on.
That's because it's a straight rip-off of like 3 other songs, and you've heard all of them before.
Amazingly, I only heard this for the first time last week. It really strikes a cord somewhere deep, just awesome.
Totally same here
This track’s dark and atmospheric feel is perfect for a world like CronoRevolution 🌑. Feels like it’s straight out of a dystopian narrative.
The hair, my gawd gal don't ever fire your stylist , its epic cut.💓
Everybody’s ears need to experience this track. It’s insanely beautiful. Seductive. Take me to bed music. Gosh. Just. Gosh. “Show me love. You’ve got your hands on the button now”. Blimey. 💓
I feel that bass deep within my soul. Seeing them at Treasure Island in 2010 is still such a powerful memory.
I don't remember when I got this song... It was free on Amazon. I listened to it every day until my computer gave up and I had to find a way to get a new one. In the meantime I forgot who did it. I'm so glad my UA-cam feed decided I might like to hear it!! I've had some abusive relationships and I love the line, I'd rather die than to be with you! I marked it so I can find it again. I'm 73. 🤷😻😻😎💋🍹💃👵🐺🌵
Not every girl can pull this haircut off, but she freaking rocks it!!! She rocks period
wow 6 years later... still listening to this. An absolute gem of a song

Just for perspective. Beethoven died more than 190 years ago and people still listen. Imagine the amount of likes!
Still listening?

My absolute favorite music video of all time. Every so often I drop by and watch it again. The song itself is amazing, then combined with reflective oil pool and the subtle bursts of color silhouettes in that one sequence... gorgeous.
Saw them live as they opened for muse. They're pretty cool. I like it.
Legend has it this video started as an impromptu jam session in a subway.
My sons mother left my son and I, this song has pushed me through.
same here :) alone with 3 sons
Damn dawg. Every day is a gift. You can make it 👍

ha same!
This song speaks to me on so many levels. It helped me out of my abusive relationship and realized the destructive path I was headed down. I love you guys so much your music is amazing and what beautiful people you are to make music and reach out to others who have these emotions.
Also.. the dancing I move the same way when I hear these songs
Amazing song... always on my mind... especially in the loneliest moments.. just a kick in stomach. Loved it... !Makes me dance.. again and again
I'm here for this amazing artist Phantogram I couldn't sleep anymore this morning so I started checking out some tunes.
