About Steve Quake:
Steve Quake oversees a shared, comprehensive strategy across the CZ Science program and technology teams, the CZ Biohub Network, and the Chan Zuckerberg Institute for Advanced Biological Imaging.
His research is at the nexus of biology, physics, and technology development. He has invented many measurement tools for biology, including new DNA sequencing technologies that have enabled rapid analysis of the human genome, and microfluidic automation that allows scientists to efficiently isolate cells for single-cell biology.
Quake is also the Lee Otterson Professor of Bioengineering and professor of applied physics at Stanford University. He joined Stanford in 2005 to help found and lead Stanford’s then-new bioengineering department as it grew to nearly two dozen faculty members. He was an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 2006 to 2016.
There is no other time like now to do research in cell biology. As a cell biologist myself, this is so incredibly exciting. The wonder of the cell is endless.

The miracle of modern medicine (that is if you can access it) has resulted in a steady increase in life expectancy and better quality of life and there is no end in sight. The challenge now is to ensure EVERYONE can benefit regardless of economic status.
Overpopulation will result by this. I wouldn't get too slap-happy about it all.

People are living longer but far less healthy lives.
@@rustydemz7919actually, if you look into the facts, you'll see that human population growth has slowed down because many regions in the world were lifted above the poverty line, giving them access to healthcare and education. Those people don't need to have a lot of children expecting half would die. They also have access to family planning tools. In short, helping those less fortunate, helps to.bring everyone up

As a first year med student, this video gives me hope about the future of medicine
as a third year med student , I can tell you that doctors don't know even 1% of the human body and there is a lot to discover and learn

@@user-mo2sg8mf5k More likely at diagnose stage for now. Eventually it's going to replace human doctors, but that's after a long time, I would say more than 30-50 years from now. So for us, we still need to go through medical school and have a career as a doctor.

I had second thoughts about changing a career and becoming a doctor because I was forced by parents to study something else but it seems like doctors aren’t future proof either.

I agree. Really excited about ai brain wave reading and brain wave manipulation using electromagnetic frequency. I think someday soon we'll be able to tune into resonant brain wave frequencies . A study of therapist and patients found both parties were in resonance during the self reported most meaningful interactions. This is going to be far beyond our wildest dreams potentially

I really wonder where we will be in 50 years from now. We're quickly entering cell and dna based medicine. In 2019 Israeli researchers 3D printed a tiny heart. It was only the size of a rabbit heart BUT it was a full heart with tissue, vessels, chambers etc. The researchers said that in 15 years (which would be 2034) they want to implant the first heart 3D printed with stem cells. This technology will progress a lot in the next decades and could significantly extend human lifespan. Heart disease is the #1 leading cause of death. But if you replace your heart at, say, age 40 your heart-timer basically starts from 0. And who knows what else we might be able to do with stem cells etc. to keep the brain and the rest of the body fresh. There's also a lot of research into what causes senescense in cells. "Ageing" is simply cells in a tissue getting damaged, eventually dying off while being replaced less and less and the cells that do get replaced are of worse quality. AS a result the tissue gets worse and worse. Your skin starts to LOOK older, it is more frail, gets wrinkly etc. because it looses elasticity, thickness and it just overall becomes weaker. We already understand some mechanisms that cause cells to eventually accumulate damage due to repair mechanisms no longer working properly. Same for cell replacement mechanisms. There's also research into cancer prevention. Blue Whales should be riddled with tumors right? Because they have a gigantic body mass. Same for elephans. But...they don't. The reason? While we humans only have 1 or 2 different "anti-cancer genes", blue whales have like 20. That STILL doesn't mean blue whales are always cancer free. Even they get cancer. BUT it is a lot less common.
It's less about cell damage and more about telomeres. Every replication leads to a decrease in telomeres until there are none left. Once that happens, the cells simply can not replicate anymore. Then tissues start losing healthy cells until they can't function causing death.
I hope AI will help us understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms of the different types of depression and anxiety

Machine learning and artificial intelligence are everywhere, we cannot ignore its benefits. By using machine learning algorithms, cancer cells can be classified in accordance with different variables such as cell shape, cell size and etc resulting in detection of them by a certain proportion. But there are some hurdles to determine the process that we need big computer systems and server for big data from analysis. Throughout the teaching the machine out regarding medicine implementations, overfitting is a big issue to be taken away that the machine learning model should not memorize the all datasets behave. unless otherwise , the algorithms mistakenly say "yes" to "no" resulting in failure.

Living a very long time, or even forever, sounds great on the surface. But imagine being born into that world of immortality, which also is a world of limited land and resources. It would be like joining a game of monopoly that started hours ago. Not fun.😳
Come to think of it, being born into a world ran by century year olds might be so miserable for younger people that they actually wish for death. Their death would also align with the interests of the elders. This thought experiment gets dark pretty quickly…

There is an irreconcilable conflict of interest between (the highly profitable) life-saving of more naturally doomed individuals and (the financial burden of) saving life as a whole. We are, allegorically speaking, trying to get more points and lives in a computer game by quasi randomly tempering with the partly understood hardware components and the utterly ungraspable BIOS - instead accepting the challenge of learning how to play better by the rules. Rules are for losers, we proclaim, and we are so insanely happy to use our newly found hacking capabilities to put that fallible little Nature in it’s place and finally show our boldly assumed intellectual supremacy.
We can only hope that AI replaces the ridiculous Australian GP and billing system that goes with it, that now operates under medicare

It blows my mind that the third, THIRD! leading cause of death in America is due to human error in the medical field! THIS is something well within the grasp of computers put to good use to impact in a positive force for those who (sadly) are deemed eligible… a whole other topic.
I don't want to be any part of a future medicine where corporations decide if I will be healthy or not.
We just tried 3 years of that, with tests telling you were ill, regardless of symptoms.

LMAO how can people always maintain this "Nothing major will happen anymore" attitude? I just don't get it dude. Just look at the past 20 years and you see how much stuff has changed. Throughout all of human history things have always changed and breakthroughs have always happened but NOW suddenly there's a stop? I mean why even? Several key technologies are on the horizon that - once they have fully matured - could change things more than ever before.
@@kaystephan2610 I think this might be the flip side of not WANTING change. Change is scary to a lot of people and the amount of change we've experienced in the last 150 years is more than what we experienced in the last 2,000 before that. The amount of change we've experienced in the last 20 years is more than we experienced in the previously 75 years. So, yeah, change accelerates and is extremely disruptive to a human brain that evolved during eons without notable change other than perhaps climate changes. Many people are averse to change, especially as we grow older, and so part of this is denying (hoping) that there won't be much more change possible in the future.
I think this guy is making a big leap of faith. Current AI does not _understand_ anything; it gets any "intelligence" from looking at humongous, extant data sets. It's not going to solve anything not already understood. Figuring out how an organism is produced from a genome is a long way off, with a lot of clever science in the process of figuring it out. This is more of a sales pitch...
It may be a sales pitch, but I don't understand how you can extrapolate from the current technology to say that some of the promises mentioned are "a long way off." He even mentions "the next 20 years" but doesn't give any specific promises of all of this happening overnight, just that it's moving in that direction. Whether it's 5 years or 20 or 50 years, much of this WILL happen, that's the exciting part, whether or not there may be hype in it. There's plenty of hype in AI at the moment, but there's also actual genuine acceleration of progress, if you've been following the area in any detail. The more people and companies working on it, the more competition, and the better chance for further breakthroughs.
You’re incorrect, while AI doesn’t “understand” it can certainly extrapolate patterns and explain stuff we could figure out on our own). Look up alpha fold. We figured out how proteins folded using AI, something that seemed impossible to do by ourselves
Define *understand* first. If LLMs don't understant they do an equivalent thing, which for many practical purposes is enough. Boats cannot *swim*, but for all intents and purposes (move itself and its load across the water) what they do is superhuman, and that's why we have them.
Plus there are plenty of examples of reinforcement learning ML systems able to extrapolate (see alpha zero) outside its training data.

I think some people may get fixated on the "intelligence" part, thinking that this needs to be the equivalent not only of human intelligence, but also awareness/consciousness. We have no clue if something based on silicon and metal will ever have anything equivalent to biological consciousness, but they can have the "effects" of it - act like they do and for all purposes be able to carry on the same intellectual exercises, but at a VASTLY faster rate and more complex level. Whether there is any internal "experience" of "understanding" is beside the point. Well, it's certainly a fascinating idea to look into as a philosophical question, but it doesn't really have any effect of whether these systems can be beneficial for humans.
The main piece that might be relevant is if these systems did have some internal experience, we would need to take a second look at what we are asking them to do, and figure out whether this was causing them any kind of suffering. This is of course exceedingly difficult to determine - just as I can't determine whether another human has a similar internal experience to me or may be a NPC generated my "the simulation" to act, look, and sound like a conscious entity. However, we simply decide to take that other person's appearance/behavior on "faith" to some extent. What happens if AI's start to tell us that they are suffering and they don't want to be used for research anymore. Do we take those words on faith as well, or do we just decide, nah, we KNOW that they can't be conscious/feel suffering? And yes, I know this is completely off topic to the OP's original question, lol!
It's true that current AI can't truly understand things. But it is great at pattern recognition. AIs like AlphaFold have already successfully predicted the three dimensional folding structure of proteins and those findings were already used to develop medicine. AI was also used to cut down a system of equations used to describe entangled quantum particles. The AI cut it down from 100,000 equations down to 4. Why? Because it can recognize patterns in gigantic amounts of data that we as humans simply cannot detect. This will surely be helpful in the future and accelerate research. It won't be a case of someone telling an AI "Hey AI, please solve this medical problem entirely" and a minute later the AI is like "Yea lol here's the solution to EVERYTHING" but just like computers sped up research, AI and quantum computers will do the same. They do however need more maturing. Right now these key techs are still in their infancy, especially quantum computers.
