Nigam Shah, MBBS, PhD, Professor of Medicine, Stanford School of Medicine; Chief Data Scientist, Stanford Health Care
In this session, Dr. Nigam Shah of Stanford School of Medicine and Stanford Health Care discusses the vital role of AI in health care, emphasizing the importance of using it safely, ethically, and cost-effectively. He uses a patient timeline to illustrate the incomplete nature of health care data, further highlighting the importance of having a good data structure, an effort Stanford Medicine has invested in since at least 2005. Dr. Shah shares AI application examples such as “The Green Button Project”, which enabled on-demand consultations to physicians based on aggregated, real-world data from similar patients, and the use of AI to predict patient prognosis and to inform which patient should be prioritized for advanced care planning conversations. He stresses the importance of thinking about the capacity of the health system and the actions we can take, in addition to focusing on the AI models. He also calls out the need to define and verify the benefits of large language models (LLMs) as they are piloted/adopted in medicine. He concludes by introducing the Data Science team, outlining the areas of focus for the team in accelerating innovations around artificial intelligence at Stanford Health Care.
Hosted in Dublin, CA, Artificial Intelligence: The Future of Medicine & Health Care Is Here brought together Stanford Medicine experts and the Tri-Valley community, for a live discussion on the transformative effects of AI on medicine and health care, with examples of how Stanford Medicine is using AI responsibly for the benefit of the Tri-Valley community and beyond.
