  • Wapping is a hidden corner of London steeped in maritime history, pirates, warehouse districts and wharves, all just minutes from Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. Starting at chic St Katharine Docks, full of yachts and eateries, this narrated walk follows the Thames Path and Wapping High Street, ending at Tobacco Dock and the Ornamental Canal - a filming location for James Bond - and onto Spirit Quay before returning to St Katharine Docks. On the way, we find the infamous Wapping Steps right on the Thames next to the Town of Ramsgate pub before uncovering the history of the Turks Head pub on Wapping Gardens. All of this in less than an hour:)

Fabulous walk Angela...even as a born and bred Londoner, I’m learning so much from your informative channel!
I have indeed seen Tower Bridge raised, both as a car passenger and on foot...It really is an amazing site and makes you appreciate both the engineering and architecture of our beautiful bridge.
I haven’t been around St Katharine docks for a good few years and it’s incredible at the changes, for the better, we now see.
I am going to do this walk and it’s so easy to take my phone and walk in your steps...so much to see!
Thank you for teaching me so much about my City!
Better get my walking boots out! :)

Thank you so much Sandra for your lovely comment:) Seeing it raised as a car passenger might be a smidge inconvenient I imagine! And someone just left a comment saying Helen Mirren has her pad around there, plus some friends of ours bumped into Grahame Norton walking their dog in the area, so who knew it could be a star-spotting opportunity too. All the best, Angela

    Hello Angela
Love the walk. Sandra and I have seen the bridge up on our visit in September of 2016. We where standing by the Dolphin statue. You can plan to see it up by going to tower bridge website it tells you it's rising times. We just got lucky that day. In front of the Dickens inn is a VR red mail box, very rare. There was a wedding reception at the Inn when we walked by. Love that Dove statue it made a beautiful picture. There was a super yellow Ferrari parked there. Love the cobbles but at our age riding a bike on them might be a bit hard on our backsides. LOL Katherine Docks is one of our favorites, we went a midevial banquet in Irvory house. Looking forward to your next walk. Take Care Chris and Sandra of Canada.

Excellent that you have seen the bridge up - I'll check the website to see if I can coincide with it one day. Wow, a Medieval banquet in Ivory House sounds amazing. And yes, I agree, I think it's a fantastic part of London and so close to 'old London' and all that it brings. All the best, Angela

    Hi Angela,
On a further note,I would say when I first explored this area nearly fifty years ago now, everywhere was virtually derelict, but it did have a lot of character and atmosphere, which I think has largely disappeared with the sanitising and gentrification of the area. There really was no better alternative, but to develop the area, but I’m just glad I’ve got my memories of how it once was. I feel the same way about Covent Garden.

I’ll send a more detailed reply later. However I’m just off to do a ‘spooky’ Halloween walk around Covent Garden. Is there anything you think would be good to know from your recollections? All the best and so good to have you back, Angela

@@ChattyWalkswithAngela Atmosphere! It’s that intangible thing that you can’t see, you have to sense it. When I walk around London I literally allow myself to soak up the atmosphere, whilst most people are busily and purposefully rushing from A to B. Sometimes it’s necessary to have purpose, but I’ve never really needed it while walking around London!

You’re back! Although I see you’ve been back for a month. I suppose that makes me the one missing in action! Darn real life keeping me away. Lovely to see (hear) you again. I like the new name, Chatty Walks with Angela is perfect. I really enjoyed the walk and the information. I hope you and Dedicated Helper had a drink of water after that trek in the heat! You mentioned Tower Bridge raised. Now there’s a little project for you. Catching it on video as it is being raised!
I’m off to watch your Halloween video. I love a spooky tale!

Well, I think the fact I was MIA for several months means I win the who was away longest competition;) And it's great to have you back, I've missed your positive comments. That's a great idea, to find the times the bridge is raised and film it, thank you. And yes, we were well thirsty after that one and the lad was none too pleased.... I hope you enjoy the Halloween spooky tales video, my personal favourite is the Bob Hoskins one.... I'm saying no more;) All the best, Angela

This was a very good video, and worth all the effort, and no doubt sweat entailed to produce it 😓 If your future planned videos are as good as this one, they will be a treat.

Good morning John, really lovely to hear from you again, I had been wondering how you are getting on. I agree with your other comment about the loss of atmosphere, despite the obvious benefits of regeneration. I used to be an editor and went down to Wapping to visit the print works - it felt SO different, almost like a different place entirely, not even London, with a strong pride in the location. Filming yesterday in Covent Garden was so crowded too, all the eateries packed, but good to see the market thriving again. All the best, Angela

@@ChattyWalkswithAngela Good morning Angela, Large swathes of London have now been effectively given a giant makeover, and in the process the original character and identity of the areas have disappeared. This applies especially to the river locations from Canary Wharf to Battersea and beyond. Period properties have been gutted and refitted with all shiny mod cons, which is all very lovely, but it lacks individual character.
Covent Garden, Soho, Oxford Street, Leicester Square etc, have all become essentially areas for the predominantly young to ‘hangout’ and by that I mean aimlessly walking around eating, drinking, shopping and watching street entertainment, in fact giant recreational areas, with seemingly little other purpose. I’m not against recreational areas, it’s just the number of bars, food outlets etc has gone through the roof, and now it’s spreading all over the pavement. Haha 😂
As I’ve got older my favourite parts of London are now the Royal Parks, where I tend to find a few more people of my generation!
