for college, I suggest studying an upcoming course through the summer on your own. For instance if you have chemistry 1 next semester, focus a month in summer on learning the material. When you are in the actual class you will have a general understanding of each topic, and all you will have to do is iron out the details.

rafael soria Haha at least in the summer you can learn without being under much pressure. You will be able to learn whenever your'e in the mood. Just drink a cup a coffee put on instrumentals and you're good to go.. Good luck!

I used this strategy for my math 101 course. Divide and conquer. I ended up making a 100 on the final and a 97 in the class. There is no hiding from problem solving. No grey area. You know it or you do not. That is why I love science and math.

I believe that one self-defeating thought is that some person in class is taking significantly less time to get through the material and still ace the test, but a counter argument I use for that is "Well, if that so-and-so was really that smart, they wouldn't be in the same room as I am, they should already be doing something more worthwhile if they are really of that caliber", btw, great video, cold hard truth!!

I'm a senior in high school looking ahead to college and really appreciate this video man. I got a 5 in bio but a 4 in Chem and think I could've done better if I applied these study strategies I half assed my homework every night lmao. In college I probably won't do EVERY problem as many of them are redundant (especially in a calculus class) but I'll do one of each type. I assume you don't mean every problem literally cause ain't nobody got time for that

Im 25 and just now switching to a biology major from a major in spanish education (I know...my family/everyone thinks Im crazy too) So Im literally starting over in school and havent taken a science class since high school. This makes me feel a little more at ease about the many years to come.
Very important vid , I wish my academic counselor woulda shared this knowledge. Your a life saver. Bio classes are so tough and I had to learn the hard way too n have burnt out over it. I am pushing through and trying to stay strong , advice like yours saves years of withdrawals

I'm in an intro to Chemistry course in college and of course I waited until the day before the test to study (my test is tomorrow.) As I was procrastinating watching UA-cam videos I decided to search something that can benefit me and came across this video. You make it seem so simple and I'm sure it is! I'm just so lazy and I never want to do anything but I'm going to try and take it step by step. I've honestly haven't even opened my chemistry textbook yet and class started almost 2 months ago. I hope I can do this.

Hahah I remember I passed! Barely, but I did study super last minute, like literally the night before. Imagine if I prepared for days! It's a good strategy to use, along with the notes the teacher provides. I normally fail my exams when I study last minute but this time I had a plan and managed to focus on the important stuff and do a lot of practice problems to get the hang of it.
Hey! Thank you for all these great advice! I found your video a bit late since I am in my last year of college. I also had to learn the hard way since high school and college was so different. If there is one advice that outshines the other would be the "no time limit to understand a chapter". Anyways, can't wait to share this with friends and also see more of your other videos.
oh thank you for being so straight forward. My coaches are either flirting with the point but end the session before they tell me. This is just great advice and information.
So true. Work the problems! It teaches you how to work *any* problem. If something comes up you didn't understand, work more problems in that specific area.
Also, when bored of reading, draw simple doodles of the diagrams in your text and label the important stuff. Over and over. Repetition is key. You'll be amazed how those doodles present themselves to you on exam day.

Hahaha...I was on the fence about buying the solutions manual for my g-Chem class but you've just totally convinced me to just get it! Also, I love your energy...so motivating! I am also usually one of the last few students left during an exam, barely finishing on time & it always bothers me when other students finish before me. It makes me question my abilities but I know this is not the way to think about it. Thanks for your tips, very helpful.

I applied these techniques for my Orgo classes and did very well. Like Dr. Oss said, a key component is becoming comfortable with learning from the questions you answered wrong. Put in some effort and orgo will be fun and rewarding. It was my favorite class in undergrad.
thanks doc. I discovered this same concept in gen chem about half way through and significantly improved test scores.
probably the best advice I've ever gotten, chemistry was my only C in high school, now I'm getting an A in college chem following this advice while everyone else is struggling.
Classes start for me tomorrow. I am defiantly going to give this a try. Great advice!
He gives more personal stories that have been proven to be effective for him. And teachers never emphasize as much about the questions in the back of the book and checking them all at the library or with the professor. It is great advice.

Thanks for this video! I needed some motivation to jump back on the study wagon because I have been feeling burnt out lately.
Also, keep track what you get wrong. Don't count partial credit, or you just needed to do one more things, or just divide by two, etc. Each one that you don't get exact final answer count as wrong, and take your average. It helps to better emulate the test situation and you give yourself a realist assessment

What was your GPA and MCAT score if you dont mind?
I don't know about you guys but what works for me is on every chapter that is covered on the exam, I make my own outlines of the chapters on a word document, and save it to my USB memory stick and my PC just in case. I basically like to copy the concepts from the book onto my outlines of every chapter, but I like to break them down and keep them simple if they are too technical. Type in every bold words from the chapters and write down their definitions, break down the concepts and keep them simple, and only focus on the main points and also highlighting concepts that require a more in depth specific look, put all these on my outline, etc.
Also if the book comes with a mastering Pearson or any other program that is designed to help you better understand and practice the content, I take advantage of this too by taking the mock quizzes or exam that come along with the program. Once I am done taking those mock quizzes/exams I like to review the work; see which questions I got wrong, copy all the questions and correct answers that are displayed at the end of the practice quiz/exam on a word document or flash cards (since writing with actual hands is better for memorization), and review all this before the exams. I cannot stress the number of times Ive come across questions on real exams that are similar to the question that are on the mock quizzes/exams that come with these programs, they are mostly just different in language and format but same concept. One class I even had real exam questions that were on the mock quizzes/exams with the exact same word/answers, so this does help a lot.
well I don't know about you guys but this is what works for me. Making your own outlines on a word document are especially useful for a final cumulative exam.

This is a good video. I literally went home after class, I made note cards, I highlighted notecards, I read them in my spare time until I was sick of reading them. But I did not forget them and did very well on my tests. You don’t have to kill yourself to get thru these classes, but some effort is required

what sucks for me is that im going for biological sciences in university, and no matter where i go in the internet, there is ONLY COMPLAINTS! everyone tells me there is no jobs, that i will be unemployed forever, or i will spend 6 years minimun after university getting a phd so that i can work a not so good job teaching at ok universities... it's really depressing, frustrating and sad to go to university with these thoughts in mind... even though i know that you need to try and be the top of your class, network the hell out of your college professors and peers, do your own experiments on free time, internships, work for free for professors, get your names in their papers, and all that good stuff, i still think that it might all be in vain =[ so maybe i'm changing to biochemistry or somenthing related next year, only so that i can keep working in science, but with a focus on industry instead.

I agree...bio is a stepping stone for further sciences - you could teach high school science or be a lab rat at a medical school. If you have a ton of charisma, you could be a nature talk show host or work at a zoo or nature park. Good luck.

Very explanatory. In my high school science classes when it came to the problems, that's all the teachers talked about and discussed in class. But, they also stressed the importance on keywords throughout the textbook. *

Since I am slow when it comes to remembering science. What I find that helps is to study slow. What I do is, is that when I am looking at a concept that I want to remember; I write down each word while reading the concept in the text book trying to comprehend the information in my head, also trying to form a picture.
Usually i just mindlessly stumble through the text, but this sounds like a much better way to grasp the subject matter. Thanks for the tip :)

I could have used this advice when I was struggling with Morrison and Boyd at this time in 1976. All my prof said was to do all the problems, and there was no advice on the approach, nor how to prepare for tests. Of course, I have figured most of this out in the meantime, and way too late.

My prof already gives us load of hw, not enough time to do all the textbook problems :(, but it truly helps! I do as much I possibly can and I see results :) Great video!
If you're getting a bunch of homework, do the problems. If you're having trouble, read the part of the book that covers the problem. If the problems require you to go a step beyond what the book says (like you're missing one or more given variables) then do the practice problems given after each section until you can do the homework problems. This is how I made A's in Physics, Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry.
