It's Hard To Pitch Shift A Car Horn...

- Or is it? Find out in this totally serious video from UXWBill and the Casio SK-1 keyboard. Some ideas really sit around for a long time in my video making queue.
Although the SK-1's sampling capability is very limited, you might be surprised how far it can go: • Casio SK-1 from 1985 . Many people are quick to say it's just a toy, and I don't think that's fair. For a compact battery powered keyboard, it has some more advanced features beyond the sampler: several selectable envelope settings, vibrato, portamento and a basic additive synthesis function that behaves similarly to drawbars on an organ.
For those wondering: I took piano lessons for a short time when I was younger. I played the piano badly then and I can still play it badly today. I would have played it badly for you in this video, were it not for the fact that even when you play the piano badly, it oftentimes calls for two hands. (Yes, I know there are one-handed professional pianists. The camcorder I presently have won't really stand up on its own. I have no idea what you do with a tripod or why I'd want to own one. You didn't see one in Naughty Truck, which is true because you're reading it on the Internet. Don't make me bite you.)
I have been thinking about revisiting my piano lessons, learning to play the guitar and maybe even the organ. To this end, I picked up a Hammond Maverick 5000 organ for free from Craigslist, which was nothing other than a great example of poor decision making. (Yes, I know the Hammond LSI organs are unreliable at best. I thought I'd get lucky.) Because I don't know what's good for me, I really would like to find a Baldwin MCO series Overture organ with the Fun Machine. I've played one of these and the Fun Machine really lives up to its name. Unfortunately, these too are hot garbage.
The video thumbnail is a painting by George Cruikshank entitled "The Head Ache". It is in the public domain within the United States and many if not all other parts of the world.

See? I have culture, and not just between my toes. (cue rimshot sound FX)
When Drew Kaplan was selling the SK-1 in his DAK catalog, he mentioned taking it out to the parking lot and using it to create a "car horn symphony".
@@epicwildstar1918geez maybe he can is that such a crime... You do realize that they've been technically friends for many years. Kevin even helped out uxwbill with a antenna for his stereo system and actually I think they traded off a stereo system years ago..
@@mercuryoak2 It's actually the inverse...I sent VWestlife the antenna years ago. Some time later, when the SA-946 stereo it was used with came up for sale, I bought it. I still have and use it fairly often after redoing some of the solder joints in the front panel.
Please don't worry about whoever that person is. I don't have the slightest idea why they're telling me how to run this channel, that I've failed miserably in doing so because I didn't do it their way, and hassling commenters here. I suspect they are just seeking any kind of attention they can get.
Two videos from uxwbill in one day? Pinch me, I must be dreaming.
>PINCH< 😲
The horn sample sounds quite a bit like how I would expect the organ preset to sound on a toy keyboard.
Glad to see you are still around and doing good.
I haven't laughed that hard since Furheads topless self popped up on screen in the Dimension movie. Glad to see you're still kickin' :)
That was a great video, lol. I wish uxwbill made more comedy like that.
The naughty Truck is still kicking eh?
this has inspired me to pitch shift random car horns, tools and anything else I can find and turn them into a piece of music.
I’ve been here long enough to remember the time you did this with the cat. Also something I would do if I had one of those keyboards
O.G followers will lol remember when UXW bill did the same sampling song with his cat meowing
Hahahaha
Hey Bill you're always for bringing back some memories of my childhood including the keyboard in all seriousness thanks for the trip back to the early 90s
At this point, I'm kinda nostalgic for even just watching his videos.
@Aeduo yes absolutely and top of that they seem like a strong family unit
Ooh that's neat! I didn't know it can do that to pick and choose the type of the tone, it really reminds me of the Synthwaves soundtrack that really plays very well. Awesome keyboard find!
This sound it makes takes me down memory lane playing Nintendo classic video games in the late 80's..Considering how I have short term memory loss problems , hearing certain sounds helps me remember what I forgot long ago. Very interesting that a keyboard can do this and it might be possible that is where the game sounds came from back then? Thanks for the video UXWBill and the short trip down memory lane.
Two uxwbill videos in as many days? I'm so happy, it's like 2010 all over again.
bill ... what an entrance. regaling us with some off the wall music. keep on truck'in 🚚 best i could do. stay well
Awesome! I have that very same kind of keyboard, the SK-1. I've always wanted to tune a set of 3 car horns to play a melodic Am7th, like some locomotive horns do.
(Re: description) I'd love to see a video on that freebie Hammond Maverick 5000 one day! I still remember the videos you and the Keykeeper did on that nice old L-102 from your local church.
I am debating it. Every time I turn it on, something different is wrong. I did go through and pull all the cards, connectors and other contact points, after which I cleaned them. I suspect some of the unobtainable divider ICs are bad. Certain notes are missing the harmonics that make them up and a few don't play (although the exact ones that don't play at all tend to vary).
I won't deny that I'll feel kinda bad about scrapping it, but that is what's going to happen eventually.
One of my favoite organ videos on UA-cam is where Shango066 is working on a vintage one. The reason is all of the goofy sounds it was making as he was figuring out its issues.
Great Job!
😊 that brought back memories. I had one of those.
With that car horn sound, you could have played the beginning to Stevie Wonder's "You Are The Sunshine of My Life."
And I quote myself: "Being about as clued up on keyboard playing as I am fashion sense..." In other words, nope. Although I did think about playing a song, I'd have needed both hands to do so. And of course I don't own any camera tripods, because I have no idea what they are used for. :-P
hi bill hope that everything is going good. great video!
Sounds your channel has a new theme song!
Hello William glad to see you’re doing well.
0:00 - 0:18 That's the most random shit I've ever heard 😂😂
Btw I still have my SK-1 from when I was kid. That demo song is burnt into the back of my brain but for some odd reason it sounds like farts and burps 😉
I'm not judging, but if that's the most random thing you've ever heard...maybe you should get out more?
@@uxwbill you're probably right 😭
Honestly, it just made me laugh for some odd reason.
That's extremely painful. I love it.
Casio FTW. You need an awesome G-Shock watch to go with that keyboard. I recommend the GW-B5600-2
i used to have a keyboard as a kid and i actually learned a couple songs to play on it. it would teach you which keys to hit by lighting up a little led avove the key. but eventually i got good enough where i could play without the light. i remember greensleeves was one of the songs i learned LOL
AWESOME!!!!!!!!
uxwbill what cars do u have left
A friend had one of these when we were adolescents. The sounds we would sample are predictable.
He also used the box to smuggle illicit fireworks out of his house when we wanted to blow stuff up somewhere. I wonder if his parents really thought we had the keyboard inside.
Well it certainly did it, if not very well. I wonder how the Yamaha VSS-30, the "grown up" version of the same idea might handle this same task.
I was going to say "if I ever find one in a thrift store at a price where I just can't say no...you might get to find out". Given the prices being asked for the Yamaha product, I have my doubts it'll happen.
I'm amazed at how the prices being asked for the SK-1 have also skyrocketed!
I had a hard time keeping a straight face myself it was actually quite amusing but also at the same time interesting I didn't know that keyboards could sample sounds. Now a sound came to mind but key keepers truck doesn't have that power steering pump whine anymore that would be quite weird to pitch bend a power steering pump whining noise lol.
That whine would probably have been hard to capture. It wasn't power steering, but rather the wonders of the GM R4 A/C compressor making that noise.
@@uxwbill ohhhhhh ok my mistake. Interesting it be hard to capture i understand that then
Great to see some new videos from you! How's the old grain truck doing at the farm did you ever get it running?
The grain truck has been gone for years and was stolen from the farm. Unfortunately, it ended up being scrapped.
It sounds like a toy organ! Regarding the lessons you mentioned in the video description, I think it’d definitely be worthwhile to take up the organ if you can find lessons online or a good instructor in your area. Our church is trying to play more contemporary Christian music, and filling that role is proving difficult, so it’s definitely a niche to be filled.
I dont why but i really thought you were going to hook keyboard directly to the horn and see if that could change the sounds through keyboards speaker bet your neighbors would love that experiment
You can't do that. A car horn operates from DC power and contains a mechanical interrupter. It is this that makes the horn vibrate by rapidly cycling power and thus produce a sound. It's very similar to wiring up a relay such that the contacts buzz.
I'd say that the result is, erm, a result... :P
Nine out of ten census takers agree...
Hey I have that same keyboard! 😊
Thanks for the laugh 😂
I finally got a truck(04 Escalade) from the GMT800 platform. Wanted one for years! How is naughty truck treating you?
It keeps on going down the road. The two biggest problems I've had are keeping front wheel bearings in it and ignition switches. The first problem was solved by my finally installing Timken (made in USA!) wheel bearings. I'm not at all surprised that the anonymous Chinese wheel bearings/hubs didn't last, but to have gone through several sets of SKF bearings was surprising.
I'm less sure about the second problem A lot of power is routed through the contact in the switch that fails. (ABS, transmission computer/shift solenoids, MVAC blower, maybe more). You might think that GM would have shoveled all that load onto a relay somewhere, but apparently not. I suppose it is entirely possible that the MVAC blower is simply drawing too much power. I've been through a bunch of those as well -- I think I'm on the fifth unit now. Yes, I know of the TSB for burnt blower wiring on these trucks and it's been done on this one.
Darn. My front differential is making a noise that kinda sounds like bad bearings. Hate that I have AWD instead of 4WD! Thanks for the notes
Also, what year is that SK-1 from?
I HAVE THE SAME KEYBOARD!!!!!!
If your father’s Cadillac happens to have the four tone horn, you could try doing this with that car. If you lower the pitch of that beast, that’d truly be a menacing and intimidating horn. The traffic in front won’t dare commit any infractions or misdemeanours again!
I don't believe it does, as there are only two horn units on that car. For some reason, the horn doesn't work. (I've not investigated beyond knowing that the horn relay toggles when the horn pad is pressed.)
It'd be easy to add the four note horn to my Caprice station wagon. The mounting point and maybe even the wiring are already there. Unfortunately, its horn doesn't work either as the switches commonly break and both of mine have. Since messing with a live airbag to replace the horn switches isn't really something I want to tackle, I've thought of getting the remote trunk release switch from a sedan and rerouting the horn wiring to that.
Now to sample a fart!😀😀
Honestly, it's not something I'm going to do.
@@uxwbill Fair enough. I was just bein' funny.
I guess that person might have been talking about shifting to accurately be in tune to a specific note or something. Either way, I don't really see why it would be any harder than any other sound.
I think I saw this key bored before I saw one in one of your old videos not sure if it's the same one a question does your brother still have the brown Chevy truck the one u called the big brown piece of junk
BBPOJ is long gone. It might still be on the road in someone else's hands.
ua-cam.com/video/jFehM1dJMjU/v-deo.html
I think it’s because the car horn is made up
of two off key tones at the same time, so if one is in tune, the other will be off.
Linuxlove changed their handle a while ago for reasons and now goes by another name. I think the UA-cam account you're looking for however has been deleted
As of maybe a month ago, the account was still there and I _think_ it was the right/same one. Maybe the video was never public? I looked through a few videos I thought were likely to have the comment I was seeking and it never turned up.
I hope I haven't 'unearthed' something that person was trying to put behind them or similar.
Follow up: Apparently whatever channel I found was _not_ the right one. I can't see how...but I was definitely in the wrong place.
I also had the wrong Buick in mind!
It was funny
Lol so funny
how about a cat on autotune
