This is just a few minutes of helping family and friends extract some of their honey. This video is not meant to be educational.
Hey...it's not just the guys that dream of a zero-turn! LOL I bought one 5 years ago and actually love mowing our place. Thanks for your videos. Always enjoy watching.

The more you get stung, the more immune to the venom you become. To most beekeepers, getting stung by honey bees is less painful than getting in an ant bed.
Educational. Humph! Ya never know whatcha doing will educate some one in some way.

I'm thinking of getting one of those roller uncappers.
I like having all the tools in my arsenal but I prefer the scratcher. The roller works and there was NO wax in the uncapping tank but I'm faster with a scratcher.

I like that extractor. My one is prehistoric!! My mum bought it 40 years ago and it's still going(ish). Main thing is, it works 👍 I'll get a new one next year?!?! Maybe 😜

You have a very tolerant wife. When I extracted in the kitchen, there was a mess left at the end of the process, wax and honey. And, I heard about it.
Forest Gump cut his grass and everyone else's. He wasn't too short of a penny 😂😂
I don't know how you boys use 10 frame deeps. I'm only 26 and a strong buck if I dare say so, and my 10 frame mediums wear me out!
Those extractors are all about balance. I try to even out the frames I put in my three frame (hand crank) extractor but it will still hop around if I"m not careful. I actually prefer an uncapping knife to help equalize things. Some frames get pulled super thick and others thin. If you just puncture a thick frame it stays thick. Plus I have a decent market for beeswax so I don't mind having the extra cappings.

We've used all methods of uncapping. I'll keep my roller but probably won't use it much any more. It's just too slow. Eventually I'm going to design my own uncapping machine. I've got the design on paper I just have to get around to building it.
Used to use them zero turn mowers in Turf class. Great machines, loads of fun to use. FYI great wheelie machines! lol

628DirtRooster Well I was in highschool and we had fun with all sorts of equipment being stupid and young. The Z-mower we had was a john deere. The older one did better wheelies. We used to take em behind baseball and do donuts same thing with the Gators too. Only thing we didn't do this with was the Triplex mower. In all fairness though, I did do all the repair work on the equipment so I figured a little fun was due. We never broke anything though, it was always another class who didn't know how to use the equipment.
gokartbuyer When I was growing up we had an old 8 horse power snapper 26" cut. That was big stuff back then for residential cutting. That thing did more wheelie popping and mud riding that grass cutting. We would just have to wash it off and hide the evidence before my dad got home. He always wondered why the thing used so much gas.
This Scag will pop a small wheelie unless you are going up a steep hill and then you can scare yourself with it. The scary part is that the blades won't disengage totally and there is no cover on the belts so if you rolled it who knows what would be the outcome. Might lose some fingers or feet.
628DirtRooster Ha I remember them old Snappers with the engines in the back. Good mowers they were. Funny we did the same thing in turf as there was a hose where the sidewalk ended at baseball/softball. So much fun rippin the parking brake and pulling 180's or sliding that ass end everywhere (tire had so little tread). That Scag is scary man! Danger is the spice of life I guess. Like I said all this happened when I was stupid and young, now I'm stupid and old. A bit harder to get away with stuff now! lol

I say yes to the zero turn, it's a bucket list item,,lol Have you ever seen the method some people use where they use a heat gun and quickly melt the caps open it looked pretty cool and seemed pretty efficient. Take care
My dad tried the heat gun method a couple of times last year. He said it worked really good on some frames but on about half of them he still had to work on them with a tool after using the gun. I've never personally tried it though. What I really want to try is an electric bread knife.

It's educational enough! Somebody might just slip up on something! I'll pass on a zero-turn. I've run them but when they tear up it's BIG bucks. I can fix my old Craftsmans with junkers I find laying around. One is 35+ years old and still has to bail the newer ones out.Did this evening. matter of fact. Keep slinging that honey and bouncing them bellies!
I have an old rear steer, front deck 60" Gravely. Runs like a top.
I've got 2 6556's, one with a kidney mower and the other with a rotary plow. Both have the 12 horse cast iron block Kohler's, both 4-speed walk behinds and both, as yours is, tough as woodpecker lips. Gravelys and bees and rabbits will multiply on you. I used to have five but the great blowout occurred and now I have 2. I'll take the two!
Got an old Wheel Horse too but I don't use it. I just keep it because I like it.
We've got 6. A Snapper walk behind hi-vac bagger with a JD Kawasaki motor, A 28 inch Roof, the Gravely, 2 Craftsmans and a Toro. Got to have a spare!

Are there any other UA-camrs, websites and people you recommend someone watch, read up on or talk to about bee keeping if interested in trying it themselves? I've been wanting to get a hive for a few years now and I decided during this winter would be a GREAT time to learn as much as possible about bee keeping and finding a good source for great bees and hives. I'd LOVE to talk bees with YOU but I don't want to take up your time too much. Thank you in advance for any suggestions! I found your channel today and subscribed to it and I've been enjoying your videos since.

628DirtRooster It cost 1300,I picked it up in Baton Rouge at the ABF confrence last year.Maxant had a booth there,so they brought it down for me and saved me the shipping.I have been having one of there water jacketed bottle tanks, I love it they make a great product.

***** It's a pain to use with deep frames. They don't really fit right and as you could see it tries to take off even with two big guys leaning on it. Still it's better than hand cranking. This one will likely receive a few modifications.

I saw a fellah once use a heat gun to melt the cappings off from the honey comb. It was simple, took less than thirty seconds each side and worked easily, no mess at all. Have you ever tried it? or do you use one?
Done it. It' hit and miss. Depends on if honey is touching the cappings.

Do you get air bubbles when you extract? I spun my first two frames after a quick visit to my remote hives. The honey was cloudy with air bubbles but has been clearing for the past three days. Bottom half is beautiful light gold, top half still cloudy. Does this happen to you?

Hi, big fan. My hives over wintered and this will be my first harvest. What is the best way to extract honey and strain honey from about 20 supers?
A small manual extractor will do the job fine. three or four frame.

Some crops are not a draw for them but don't negatively affect the honey. We don't have row crops in our area though.
I don't know if you read the comments or not but watching y'all with that extractor reminds me of the movie "THE GREAT OUTDOORS" with John Candy lol if you haven't seen the movie you should watch it.

probably a stupid question but how do the bees make honey in the box if they can't access flowers
They are free to come and go. They aren't locked in the box. It's just their home.

628DirtRooster; Just check out the way a toploading washer is constructed and you'll figure how to build a frame around the extractor and absorb the off balance vibrations.
+the brain These things aren't as heavily constructed as a washer. If you run them slower and for longer they don't shake as bad and they still get the job done but it really takes a lot of time when you have a lot to do.

There is a kind of a screen that is between the brood box and the honey super (box) that the worker bees can pass through but the queen can't. That keeps her from laying eggs in the honey super.

Ironside451 They stay in the boxes. Most people use the deep boxes for brood (larvae) and typically stack them two high. Then a medium (honey super) goes on top above a queen excluder.

how many hives does a guy need before he needs to invest in a motorized extractor ?
I say 100 or so but my older friends disagree. LOL They get worn out extracting honey from a dozen hives. You may never need to buy one. There are a few people around here who will rent you their equipment at a very affordable rate and extractors are pretty expensive.

jerry prewett You can get by with a hand crank two frame extractor for a while. Think of it as a cardio workout that results in honey. LOL

Yep, we have two.
are the frames a standard size? short, large, long, short, what ?? does the health dept inspect your operation if u want to sell ur honey, where ever u r ?? how come the price of honey is so high ?? how is the market for honey, retail or wholesale? is one type of honey more expensive than other, and where does the expensive honey come from? do some types of bees product more honey than others?? if the area has a specific type of plant in bloom, does a specific type of bee collect it better than others? that's a strange question, but that maybee !!

Based on the way that you guys are handling the frames and lids on these bee boxes, is it safe to presume that you guys are working with European breed bees and not Africanized? Because, in other videos that I have watched on You Tube, Africanized honey bees would not be very tolerant of the jarring and jolting of their hives.
Thankfully we don't have Africanized bees in our area.

Bees develop inside individual cells. The queens are the only ones that are developed in vertical cells.

I have 120 7 frames flow honey our hives I don't have to lift heavy box and doing uncapping , extracting and replace on hive .

If I had plenty of bees in a place where marijuana was legal, and I let the bees do their thang with say, a valley of marijuana crop, do you think maybe the honey would be flavoured or affected by the type of plants the bees were living with? Sounds stoopid, I know, but just a thought...
+SM JungleTaktikz Not stupid. It's a subject we joke about a lot but we/I don't know since we are not in a state where grows are legal and if they are getting on illegal crops we don't know about it. Bottom line is I haven't researched and don't know if there is anything about a marijuana plant that a honey bee would be attracted to. Pollen, nectar and sap are the only things they would want.
Hey, if you did manage to get an MJ Honey crop, you could probably make bank off of it in the states where MJ is legal. LOL
Need to add a little weight to that bad boy, it was almost jumpin all over spinnin the frames.

Have you seen the "Flow Hive" no need for all this just turn a tap plug in your hose and the honey just flows out from the hive.
