He's interviewing SHANE BLACK and he puts his name first in the title 😂
Jack Howard in a nutshell
+Sarah Baroom its his channel
+carys L-J and is not the first time "Jack and Dean"
Michael Keefe I'm not insulting him! I love him I've watched him all these years. It's a joke.
LOL. Classic Jack.
The Pink Panther movies are my FAVOURITE! I adore Peter Sellers as Clouseau
I love how Russell and Ryan ended up working together. What a funny story
Filmmaking is all about adapting and problem solving. (And CA$$$H)
What a great message to end on though
Just do it!
Hello Dodie😊 hope the jet lag wore off💕💕
Haha, I asked pretty much the exact same bee question at the press junket.
Super interesting. Love that whole 'This is important' sign. It's so easy to come up with reasons to not do something - no time, no money etc. But at the end of the day it's important to remember WHY you do what you do and that it is important to do it and not make excuses.
This was great! Glad you kept it 16 mins. Some brilliant, practical advice, and it has made me sit down with the blank page this evening. I loved "you owe it to yourself to be playful".
yeah, that bit was great :) it's important to have fun with any creative project
16 minutes of Jack
yesssssssssss
Lol same I'm like YESSSSSSS MORE JACK WOOOO
It's kinda' reassuring to know that all creative people go through imposter syndrome and self doubt.
"You owe it to yourself to be playful."
Oh, man. How badly I needed to hear that.
Jack Howard + filmmaking in the title = clicking the video immediately
lotrbaby don't forget Shane Black!
I love how much he always name drops Fred Dekker. Moster Squad for life. Shane Black is the greatest. Awesome interview, man.
Hi Jake! It's nice to know you are subscribed to Jack
#monstersquadforlife
I'm obsessed with the little bit at the beginning and end, no wonder you put it in twice. With something as abstract as writing a script, it sometimes feels very hard to justify prioritizing it over 'real' things, and I think it's very significant that Shane shared that the piece of tape said "this is important," if not just to remind himself of what it will become
Man, THE NICE GUYS is such a modern classic. Amazing film.
It's very reassuring to know that the fear when you haven't started a project never really goes away. Really enjoyed this!
The longer style of interview is more natural, I have no idea why it isn't used more this is so much better to watch
Loved the front part about how the fear never goes away but just keep moving and write on anyway till you get to an idea that overwhelms the fear. (:
Most definitely, the advice I took to heart the most was the same as yours, Jack. I am not a filmmaker or aspiring filmmaker (at the moment, who knows in the future since UA-cam has become such a prevalent and important influence in my life), but I am a writer and poet who has always SAID I am going to write a book (but never gotten past basic character and plot ideas). I have access to a computer. I am fortunate enough to have fully functional hands and fingers. I just need to start typing.
Great video, man.
I really needed this. I'm making a no budget, feature length, British, teen comedy to try and get a scholarship and this has pushed my inspiration for creating and writing. Cheers Jack
I really needed to hear that, I've been saying I'm going to write a book for years and have always started and never taken it anywhere. It's time I remind myself what is important.
As somebody currently writing short films, this entire talk in general was very inspiring and engaging, thanks for bringing this to us!
"This is important"; the most encouraging words creatively I've heard in ages. Thanks for that Jack
definitely going to watch this a thousand times once all my exams are over because it's 100% going to motivate me to write and make some stuff in the summer
I have an exam today. Not letting the fear take over has really helped xxx
WHO FRAMED ROGGER RABBIT!!!! I LOVE THAT GUY NOW
What Joel Silver had to say about the size/budget of a project not mattering - that it's still all about relationships between people really resonates with me!
This was so interesting. There is something about listening to people talk about what they're passionate about that makes me really happy and inspired.
now I really want to rewatch kiss kiss bang bang
You said 'finish-Jack-Dean' quite fast and so my heart sort of stopped. Then I put the pieces together and reassessed what you actually said- all is fine with the world again haha! So happy I watched thist Jack - so so interesting!
I liked all of the aspects of this. As a person who's beginning to write again and study film more intensely, I especially resonated with the end bit that, "THIS IS IMPORTANT" was posted on his typewriter; sometimes you need to prioritize your work and trudge through the slow moments where creativity isn't bursting through in order to get there. Great content Jack : )
You're so naturally charismatic. Love it
Please put up your video with Danny Boyle soon - I found this video so useful and interesting that I'd love to hear what one of my favourite filmmakers would have to say. I especially like how you are clearly asking questions you actually want to ask, all the nitty gritty how you actually make art as a practical thing. Love this sort of stuff, so always happy to see more.
This why is brilliant. I loved this interview! Feeling inspired!
Absolutely love these kinds of videos! The "just do it" bit was ever so helpful, all the notes of ideas on my phone very rarely turn into scripts because of fear so. Thank you :)
More and more I find myself thinking about film, so I'm really enjoying watching videos like these to try and understand how it all works and the creative process! thumbs upppp!
This was fascinating and really encouraging. I loved what he had to say about working your way out of the fear, found that really comforting for myself as I'm also suffering from a fear induced creative block. More long form film-makey content please!
So wonderful seeing how passionate you are about your craft - and it's definitely taken you places! Those are some big names! Would definitely love more videos about the creative process of filmmaking.
Brilliant! Definitely interested in more film discussion stuff, could listen for hours.
This is some of the best advice I've ever heard.
So intrigued about the bee in the car that I'm considering watching it. Thank you so much for this video, it really helped!
Absolutely loving these longer chats about filmmaking. Feeling more and more inspired everytime I watch your videos and being a filmmaker myself, it really inspires me to wanting to be better and continuing doing what I love!
After watching this I've now began to write some short film ideas and plot them instead of doing Media Studies revision for my exam tomorrow 😅
Man, I have been avoiding an important blank page for a week now. It's so weird how something as simple as starting can be so hard.
Jack, I love all your videos where you discuss creativity, social issues, life etc. I really enjoy your perspective and I think it would be great if you brought in other creative types or people to have these discussions with!
Jack, you're a really awesome interviewer. I mean you can compliment without but-kissing, look actually engaged and interested and have good questions, good job! I'd definitely watch more
just so you know, Jack, I'm a writer and I'm here for this kind of content
looking at the comments, all these intelligent filmmakers getting so much from this is really beautiful
Three very inspiring people in one video! This is the motivational interview I needed today.
I don't make films but just today I was thinking about the book I want to write, and Jack said like just do it don't fuck about. I'm not gonna fuck about. It'll take at least 10 years for me to write because I'm not a driven person so I should start sooner rather than later
love the long detailed videos about film making!
Oh my goodness, the fear. It's comforting in some strange way to hear that the fear never leaves. I left work just over 2 weeks ago to pursue a career in acting. Obviously a super crazy move and I started out really well - loads of auditions and a few job offers but for the last 3 days I've just sat and been too scared to do anything and too scared to not. It's been a weird old time and I'm glad to hear that I've just got to do it!
i just like that you actually posted a video because like thats a first
Love these kind of vids. I'm not a filmmaker but a musician and this did actually really help. So thanks!
Love love LOVE this. Would be brilliant to see more long discussion videos like these, this was really great.
wow. a video from Jack Howard the great? we are not worthy. in all seriousness, great video:-)
Absolutely love this! thank you for that :D ♥
wow yes do more stuff like this jack I love it I'll definitely refer back to this in the future
Love these sort of videos!! ❤️ can't believe it's been a year since I met you and dean!
This was brilliant, loved the questions you asked. Not really in the creative field but still found parts relevant to me :)
this is a great video. it's made me think about doing and trying some things in different ways. Very charismatic and clear speakers too; when Shane was giving his "touch bottom" advice it felt like he was looking through the camera right at me...
great video watched the whole thing really liked the feel of it. as an aspiring creator the just do it was just what I needed today. love what you're doing jack!
thanking u for doing this three shot (instead of the regular two medium shot interview
also, haven't seen this film yet so when you mentioned the bee thing all I could imagine was the car scene in The Bee Movie (I'm sorry)
Same
I interviewed Shane Black back in 2013 for Iron Man 3 - he's an awesome guy and a brilliant writer. Jesus I can't wait to see Nice Guys.
Two of the greatest people working in film today. Very jealous. Shane's point of "just do it" is salient. I am a constant planner. Always planning to write, make, etc. But over the last few years, I realised that you just need to get these things out of your head and onto film. Don't wait for a budget, or the right camera, or the right people, or the right location. Just make it. Even if that only serves as a blueprint for the future, you won't regret it. What you WILL regret, is sitting in front of your computer, agonising over the perfect phrasing of a line, or the perfect frame to cut on. It won't be perfect. Just make it be.
god bless you Jack Howard, this was needed.
I LOVE these types of videos. please make more xxx
This was so great!!! as an aspiring filmmaker (maybe screenplay writer) these kinds of videos fascinate me and I learned a lot!
I downloaded this video as an audio file.. I need to listen to this as I write my scripts and ideas..
THIS IS BRILLIANT THANK YOU
You made it, baby.
Such an inspiring interview!
Really made me evaluate my creative choices and process ... Great video, loved it
Love this! Awesome, inspiring interview.
This was actually really compelling, more of this kind of content would be great :)
I loved this! The advice was great and super motivating. More more more please!
I have script or story ideas in my head for months sometimes before I've written a single page, just because I want to make sure it's not a bad idea. But that places so much more pressure on it once I start working, it's nice that the feeling of fear and terror is felt by even people who have already proven their talent. Great video!
Great questions, Jack! Love it when intelligent youtubers interview filmmakers and start up interesting conversations. Thanks!
As a film student (well ... Ex film student now as I've just finished Uni) I LOVE these types of videos. Extremely insightful and interesting. Your interview skills are fantastic too. Would you consider doing review videos for the latest films? Or at least just the standout ones that really impressed you? Often I'll see a film that I love and you tweet about how much you loved it but 140 characters is very limited. Would love to see a more in-depth review similar to your Whiplash and Men, Women & Children review.
This was really interesting to watch!
This was a fantastic discussion, Jack! I definitely learned a few things and I can't wait to see this film.
Really enjoyed this Jack! I find stuff like this really interesting. I would definitely like to see a video on the writing process.
Oh that's nifty! Good job Jack!
Loved it Jack! I myself am going through a kind a (I guess you could call it) fear state of mind on making films, and this really helped I think. Great videos as usual!!
Absolutely loved this interview. Hearing how all these things come together to make something creative and awesome is the coolest thing. Can't wait to go see The Nice Guys this weekend. Would love for you to do more videos regarding film and creativity and definitely wanna see that Danny Boyle interview!
Thank you for this! It was fascinating and informative. I loved it.
this video is amazing jack! a very inspiring video for your audience and aspiring filmmakers out there to pursue their dream with a bit more information a experiences from professionais. you should do more of this content! *seal of approval*
I needed that
I'm not a film maker, but I loved this video. The message at the beginning and end is applicable to anything to do with making something and writing and I find the film making process really interesting and would love to do it if I could re live my options. maybe I'll take the message to heart and start writing - but I really enjoyed hearing the process irrespective of the film though it sounds fantastic. look forward to more videos specifically on the process of making a film!!
Really like your videos about movies
That was very inspiring and interesting to watch! I feel much more motivated to write a book that I am planning to write for some time. And also - Jack, you are a great interviewer :) I would love to hear from you more about movies and the process of writing. Good luck in future projects!
Loved this!! Loved their advice and the discussion that ensued. I'm an aspiring author but i really enjoyed listening to everything discussed in this video. Thanks Jack!
I loved this! it would be nice if you could do more of this :) that message at the ending got me motivated to do stuff. Well, time to write a movie I guess
I'd really like to see more vids like this. and yeah the end bit
absolutely love seeing you talking about movies, Im learning a lot from the vidos you make. I love Film talking, but I have noone who will be as passionate about them as me. I can relate to a lot of what you are saying and asking, totally would like to see you talking more about movies. I mean, if you'd like to that'll be pretty cool :)
This is an incredibly interesting conversation. Thanks for sharing it!
Loved it. Very inspiring.
More of these please.
Also like your own input before, during and after.
Nice shoes.
Cheers.
Also loved how he dares to do things differently to other people while still grounding the story in reality. I think that's really interesting.
Do these again :p just talking movies is fun
Now I must admit that I have no interest, or at least, had no interest in becoming anything like a film maker about two years ago. Watching people like Jack and videos like these have been very fun and intriguing and inspiring and all sorts of goodness! I haven't made any big steps towards making my own films yet but it's been a lot of fun learning about others. Thanks Jack for these sorts of vids and helping me make my way towards good works, and if not, helping me to appreciate films and movies a l o t more then I did some year ago!
Also I love your work and am excited to see more!
' I can make it, i can make it '
Definitely, the writing tips meant the most to me. Thanks for this!!
