  • Just in time for Black History month, our very first novel study is a rich and engaging look at slavery and racism. Designed for kids of all ages from pre-school all the way to high school, it contains summations, predictions, deep discussion prompts, vocabulary lessons, review, hands on projects, geography, and an in depth look at the parts of a story. Older students will do an in-depth literary analysis, plot study, and character analysis on the main characters.
For the first time ever, our Teacher's Guide is scripted, meaning all your answers and levels are listed there and you just read out what your students are supposed to be doing. Designed to be done with a book and a hot cup of tea, this will prompt amazing round table discussions that will impact your kids forever and draw you closer together as a family and to God in the process.
For this novel study, you will need the book Underground to Canada by Barbara Smucker. It is difficult to find in the US, but is available if you search the PDF title as well as as a kindle book, in some online book shops, and even read out loud on UA-cam. Yes, it requires some digging, but it is a fantastic book focusing on American history that is sure to captivate any audience!

How interesting! I have family ties from Maryland to Canada -- a huge family there -- the Howard-Holland family and historically documented through William Holland and Leatha Howard. How exciting!

This is our first year homeschooling. We are currently using Abeka video and our kids hate it. Someone in a group recommended this and after watching your videos, it is exactly what I’m wanting. I’m so excited to use this next year.

I read Underground to Canada in grade 5 for school - and have probably reread it a dozen times more after that. It’s been on my mind throughout the years to read it with my homeschoolers but haven’t been sure of timing.
This novel study is gold! Thank you for pouring so much into this mini-unit.

I LOVE this so much!! I’d always been interested in doing unit studies, but the thought of having to customize the curriculum for each kid was/is just so overwhelming.

Truly love the rustic look of this unit. I live in Canada and have never heard of this book. As a believer it is nice to see that there are options for my children. Thank you for this beautiful creation.

We have several units including this one. I'm confused about the age and levels. Pre Reader is basically just coloring while Early Reader says ages 8-10. My son is 6 and is an Early Reader but the topics in Early Reader are too much for him. He really doesn't like the pre reader because it isn't enough for him and he doesn't like to color. There is a pretty big jump from Pre Reader level to Early Reader level. The highschool level is confusing as well. The units say that the highschool level starts at age 16 and you said this unit is 17-18 but my 14 year old is going into highschool. Does Canada have different ages for highschool than the US does? She would be into her sophomore year in highschool before she would be doing the highschool books. Obviously we will do what works best for us but I was curious about why the ages are so off?

Just curious if you used, MLA or Chicago or another criterium for the citing and source documentation.
Also, will you becoming out with science oriented ones and will/would you be using the APA criterium for these skill sets?

We taught all three in Earth Science. We personally use Chicago so I taught Chicago for quoting from the book for this one.

The writing pack is separate? There are a LOT of add-ons in this curriculum, which was pitched as an all-in-one.

Is there any particular order to go in for gather around? I will be starting with my 7yr old soon

not unless you are doing phonics, if you need more phonics, I would recommend the second two books in our ready to read program which go up to about grade 2 and cover all subjects. But for our themed units, you can start anywhere!

I love the writing pack! Bought everything today and printed them ready to go tomorrow!! Is the writing pack designed to be done in the same sitting as the mini unit lesson?

    • @HomeschoolOn
      @HomeschoolOn  3 роки тому +2

I personally would have my students do it before we do the lesson. So if you do this for afternoon tea time, do the writing lesson in the am, that way while they listen they can be looking for what they learned in the reading to take really detailed and specific notes.

I'm a little confused how this works. I purchased every level except high school and pre-reader. I wish the directions were a little more clear and understanding. I feel like there's a lot of 'jumping around' to try and find where to start first. Example, when do the kids do their character study (maybe I'm missing it?). I would typically just chat online with their representatives but they seem to have taken that down and waiting for a full day is not quite ideal. I'm new to Gather Round and I want to give it a chance, but so far it's a struggle. We've already done Living off the Land. The topics were exciting, but again, slightly confusing and flipping pages constantly to keep the work semi organized. Just my opinion

I'm wondering why your customers cannot even ask about their orders on your FB group page? I tried to make a post because I have not received all of my digital files. My post was declined. Are we not allowed to ask about products that we have PAID for? The control in your FB group is very strange, and off-putting. I don't feel that I will continue with your products. You do not want actual feedback. You only want positive comments on the page. No real concerns or feedback is allowed, as a customer, I want to see feedback of all kinds.

Hi Homeschooling Mama, we direct all customer service questions to our email because our group is so active that it risks getting lost in a stream of social media posts and not being dealt with. Our customer service staff and our group moderators are different teams, all of our moderators on our group are volunteers so they actually don't even have access to our shop to be able to help you with your order and our customer service staff monitor emails. Hopefully this helps to clarify, we want to be sure that you get help from the right team so we direct you to the place where that can happen!
