  • ✨Hey mamas! Today is my first video in a novel study series that I will be sharing over the course of the next month!
This one will give an intro to how I plan them, a review of the Gather ‘Round Honeschool novel unit for Underground to Canada, and the additional resources I’m using!
I’ll also be sharing some thoughts about Black History Month!
Grab the things from the video here:

New here? Introduce yourself in the comments!
    I’ll go first:
I’m Christina. I’m married to my best friend, Seth, we have 5 kids (ages 1, 3, 6, 10, & 14), and love our family, Jesus, and adventuring together.
We are passionate about being counter culture, including alternatives to traditional schooling. I was a public high school English teacher, turned homeschooling mom, turned middle school English teacher at a small Christian school. I’m hybrid homeschooling + Christian-schooling our five kids. Homeschooling is a lifestyle and a culture that will always be part of our family culture!
I love the Charlotte Mason education approach, and many others, but I’d say I’m more of an eclectic teacher-mixing the different aspects of homeschool styles that I love-living books, literature-based learning, Montessori, and so much more!
Just as I brought what I learned through teaching into homeschooling, I am so excited to bring what I’ve learned homeschooling back into teaching!
Whether you are considering homeschooling, new to homeschooling, considering alternative ways to educate your child, or just looking for some encouragement and inspiration for your motherhood journey, I hope you feel welcome and encouraged here 🤍

Light keepers has great book sets of boys and girls who changed the world that we've enjoyed too. I love inspiring biographies!

We did Underground to Canada over the summer. I agree with you and I used a sharpie to mark out that word and did not read it. I’ve never said it and never will, but I do understand why it was in the book. We did almost the exact same thing you did. I was nervous as well, but we loved it and would recommend it. Also, you have taught me to slow down, do read out loud to my kids, land to be okay just doing a page a day of a few different things. I’m amazed at books or curriculum that we have completed that I never thought possible. All because I took small bites, and over time, complete the entire thing. So, thank you !

Check out the book Heart & Soul by Kadir Nelson. It’s a really great picture book that ties everything together from slavery to civil rights to the first black President. We used it as the spine for our Black History Month unit for the past two years. It’s so good!

Thank you for sharing!! My background (prior to homeschooling my girls) is as a substitute teacher in elementary/special education. My oldest two are in fourth grade, so I’ve been in my comfort zone, but as we move higher eventually into middle school/high school, that’s where my confidence is lacking.

This was really interesting. I haven't used this book study as I am yet to find the book. But I would love to do more indepth book studies. I have several middle grade books on my bedside table waiting to be read in the hope of being inspired into creating a unit for my daughter to do.

This was so helpful, thank you! I'm looking for some novel studies to do just with my 10 and 12 year old boys next year. They don't enjoy anything Language Arts related, but I'm considering trying this one. They already have grammar from IEW. Do you think this would be sufficient by itself for literature and writing, for very reluctant readers/writers?
