    Hey I'm curious what state is in your furniture now? Because I believe you just trapped them under that finish, mold cannot be removed from pourious materials, you may just removed the damaged finish, Mold has spores and they are not even visible at all, That is why you have to use something like a powerful vacuum machine with hepa filter and it should not be cleaned in an open air but in an isolated room and after you brush the things off, that vacuum cleaner should run several hours in that room to collect any particles in the air. Besides diluted bleach would not kill the mold again, it will actually boost its growth, the reason behind that, the bleach does not penetrate wood, but water does, since you are delluting with water, water will get deeper than bleach, and will create better environment for mold to grow.
    But anyways as long as your furniture is not in damp place anymore it should be fine, as long as your finish degrades and gets a bit of a moisture in it, the mold will rip off that seal.

    Suggestion. Spray the piece with either vinegar or vodka to kill any mold spores and reduce smell. It will stop any mold growth. Then proceed to the drying section. Spraying with vodka also removes smell in old clothes...

      What about your couch? I’m having issues killing the order due to the humidity where I live. I spray it down with Lysol and it helps for a little while, but I can’t get it to stop coming back.

      @@Yah-Izoa-Hakaboth Do not use lysol. That does not kill mold as easily. You would have to saturate the fabric with vodka or even vinegar. Let it dry thoroughly.. but, if the mold is in the cushions it may be ruined. Sorry..

    Unfortunately you cannot do this if you live in a apartment complex. The site manager will leave a note at your door stating you need to remove your furniture as soon as possible. ‘From The Property Management Team’

      I have lived in one a few times. Not as much freedom as I would like. I have seen people on youtube do their work in public parks. That is probably why.

    I have mold and mildew on the outside surface of an antique Victrola. How can I get that off without doing anything that would decrease it's normal appearance and value? Thanks!

      White vinegar. Saturate a cloth and wipe every surface. If possible let the unit air dry in direct sunlight for several hours.

    Helpful for sure. I bought a 21 year old RV in Feb. Guess what they were selling it in winter to HIDE the MIDLEW. I did detect and should have RUN. But running was 550 miles to home & person with me did not smell it. Her 40 year son did not smell it and the seller swore he smelled nothing. So yeah me & my super smeller nose did too smell it. I drove RV home & on the way definitely right behind drivers seat. Sure enough once home discovered it is in one location under the fresh water tank right behind the drivers seat. I was able to knock the stench down over winter during cold months with mixtures of moldex & Oxine. They do not add perfume to the situation to mask it. It gave me great hope. Finally warmed up enough to pull the supposedly empty tank out 3 days ago. Pouring out approx a quart of water left in the tank with no way to prevent it at that moment in time. Had to cut wires that later turned out to be water depth detectors to the tank itself. OH will I don't intend to ever fill that tank more than 10 to 15 gallons using a reliable meter so to stop the source of wetting it that past owners didn't figure out. (Poor design of air hose where water can leak during sloshing about or if you over fill tank. Also sometimes the inlet fails and people don't realize they are dumping water into the RV along with filling the hose. This is the air intake hose. Ok when I pulled the tank I hoped for the best didn't get see the worst fear but pretty bad just the same. I've had lots of luck doing what's demonstrated here with furniture. Now and again it's not enough. The mildew scent returns in a few weeks to months. However love reviewing as I take a rest from scraping the underflooring where the mold's well imbedded. And due to electrical wires in this location and an electrical box just above the 4000 Onan generator it's super difficult to get it cleaned, scraped and DRY there. I ran fans all night. Started scraping today and right away could tell it's still dampened wood in places. It may be a week long job. I'm up for it. mentally more than physically I think. I have very sore wrists and shoulders from scraping yesterday. I need to worry about if it went up the wall. It's definitely into and under the wall. Dinette cushions and support that sits above this tank and mildew area picked up the scent too. This treatment shared today will work well to stop the smell in the board that the cushions sit on and also the surrounding support box that goes around the tank and also supports the cushion and that side of the dinettes bench. The foam has a slight odor as does the fabric. No problem for the fabric I am reupholstering the entire cushions and sofa. BUT not sure I can get out the scent from the foam. I'm planning on first hand washing the seat cushion with a lemon pine sol mixture and moldex. Then rinsing well in a solution of Oxine. Let air dry in the sun and hope the sun's UV will render the scent permanently gone. Time of course will tell. Meantime love watching when someone else does all the WORK. LOL. Great demonstration and so appreciate it. I will spray the boards that make up the sides of the box with a solution that stops mold growth for up to 1000 activation times due to dampness. And then spray with the YES I use the same clear Rustoleum spray paint to seal it. Also that'll be used on the board that the cushions are supported by too and I've had outside treated 3 times and still the smell is there. Pine sol is my next option. I will use the lemon as it's not as strong lingering as the original and probably not as strong either but should do the job. MILDEW so sad in most cases it can be avoided. In the case of this wonderful RV definitely could have been avoided and prevented had they fixed the problem right away. No instead I found all kinds of probably once scented drier sheets and sachets of various makes with no scent left too. No the seller knew he could pass the RV on in winter and so he did. And yes lesson learned. I DID KNOW Better and so needed to trust my nose. Not those of others who then couldn't smell it but now my husband and my neighbor who was with me when I bought it can too smell it. LOL. Luck to all of you who run into this problem. And thanks for this post. I needed it.

    Would you not recommend a quick bleach wash after wire brushing ... Just as an extra precaution against mould coming back again.
    Ok, it"ll mean a bit more drying time, but not too long.

      The mold and mildew are dead once the wood dries. You could wet it again with bleech, but every time you wet wood you run the chance it will swell or warp and not go back the way it was. Since I know the mold and mildew and dead and there is no visual evidence of it being there before, I feel confident with sealing the wood after the wire brush. If I was going to use bleach, I would use it while the wood is still wet if possible.If it wasn't wet, I just don't think I would risk getting it wet again.

      When the mold dies, it releases toxic spores that cannot be killed easily, and is even more harmful than the mold was. Please be careful when working with items that have had mold growth. I love your videos and hope to be watching them for many years to come. (Side note: eC3 is the best for lowering risk of toxic spores)

    if the mold is inside the wood and you paint it, can it then keep growing on the inside?

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  4 роки тому +6

      Mold needs moisture to live. Moldy furniture has normally been a damp place or had an incident where water was on it for an extended period of time.if you had a piece of furniture with mold and take it out of wet environment, the mold will stop growing and die. So the answer is no, mold won’t continue to grow under paint if it is in a dry environment. Also, You can add a “mold inhibitor” to any paint If it will be in a high humidity place, like a bathroom.
