  • Get my 3-part full-swing training series that will help you tap into a level of power and consistency you didn't know you had. And the best part? It's completely free! ballstrikingblueprint.com/mag...
    One of the most common things golfers tell me on the lesson tee is that their swing feels disconnected, or like they are "all arms." In today's lesson I'm going to show you a simple drill that will take the arms out of your swing and give you effortless power... instead of powerless effort.
    By keeping the arms quiet, steady, and connected to the big muscles of your hips and torso you can generate a ton of power while simplifying the golf swing.
    We'll talk about one of the most famous images from Ben Hogan's teaching, and give you an easy drill to put it to work in your swing.

    I have Hogan's book "5-Lessons" but never fully comprehended the passive arms he describes which you now have clarified. What a great explanation you provided.

    I've worked very hard on keeping the connection between my elbows like the picture of Ben Hogan in his book that you showed. It takes practice because you have to maintain a "loose" feeling in your wrists, but still kinda pull in the elbows. It really can be a game changer for so many people. Thanks for this really great information here.

    My question is how do you bring it back any further than the distance shown in the exercise or in the video to get to the top of swing and still feel connected? It seems like once I try to finish bringing the coub back, that I lose all that feel of connection. Like i cannot keep the elbows attached to the sides of my body as I bring the club back any further to complete the backswing and then bad things can start to happen at the top cause I am now disconnected.

    You may consider noting that one should use “ground forces” (the feet and legs) to move the hips and torso to swing the kettle bell. You have already posted instruction on what ground forces are and how to use the feet and lags access them.

    • @ZachAllenGolf
      @ZachAllenGolf  7 місяців тому

      You are exactly right, so important to use the lower body while doing this. The added weight of the kettle bell makes it almost automatic .

    Love your videos and love this drill. Just a word or warning, after doing a tonne of weighted drills it will throw your balance off when u get a club in your hand.

  • @frankleemartin54
    @frankleemartin54 7 місяців тому

    Left wrist supination takes care of keeping the arms together and flattening the swing. Most modern pros do this and square the club face with body rotation. There is also a feeling hitting down on top of the ball driving it into the ground. All the best ball strikers had this feeling even though it is not what is actually observed in the swing. This is what allowed Hogan to go from hooking the ball to fading it and the real secret to his swing. Look at how Hogan and Trevine really hit down on top of the ball with their short irons and you'll get it...

    I've seen a video that showed that Mr. Hogan actually did not keep his elbows pushed totally together. They were turned in but not to their max as shown in his illustrations

    • @ZachAllenGolf
      @ZachAllenGolf  6 місяців тому

      You are exactly right. I think he got to a point where his arms were so conditioned to swing the club back exactly right, he no longer needed to preset his arms in this fashion. But in his books he shows how learning in this fashion is really beneficial.

    Before I express my thoughts, I'm not a pro golfer or an instructor. I started playing golf at age 45. In the past 28 years I have played a lot of golf and practiced for hour each week. I've watched numerous instructional videos, read most golf books and read magazine articles. I've gone from scoring about a 100 to now averaging low to mid 80s. I've broken 80 several times playing 6,000 yard courses. This is MY thoughts on the arms in the swing. Firstly, Hogan's book illustrations are extreme exaggerations. If taken literally, they most likely will cause golfers to fail. I believe the arms and shoulders should be fairly soft. The arms should pretty much just hang from the shoulders. The rotation of the hips and torso without restricting the lower body will move the arms. The momentum that occurs from this will cause the arms and the club to move correctly. Elbows will bend at the correct time without any attempt to manipulate. Supple wrists will release as required without any manipulation. Watch video of Hogan swinging. His arms are not forced close together. Much of the time his elbows don't point downward. They point slightly behind him. His arms are soft and move with his rotation.

    • @ZachAllenGolf
      @ZachAllenGolf  6 місяців тому

      I think most of what you are saying is spot on, But Hogan himself explains how he got to the point that you are describing. He needed to first preset his arms, to train them to move consistently in the backswing. And then at some point it was no longer needed his arms were trained, and he did not have to preset them.
