It could be a natural direction for all gamestops to change into GameStop retro stores. Since retro collectors are the bigger audience for physical games. But as a company, they have sold retro games on their website before, and they don't pack and protect the product at all. Its the same crooked gamestop jumping on a trend.

Those are absolutely some legitimate concerns. We don't have that as an option in Canada or at least in New Brunswick where we are.
I have more faith in our local pawn shops since they seem to have a more vested interest because they are locally owned and operated and not a huge corporation. I'm wondering what sort of security or return policy GameStop will have on Retro games. Interested to see more for sure. Keep us updated 😊

Never had that before . They do sell some games in sleaves . Mostly playstation 1 or 2 games . I liked when they had that pre-used section back 2001-2006 brought a lot of find used games from gamestop and then the bullshit came in the gaming companies didn't like it they were losing money so shit slowly sadly eneded because kats would play the NEW games and then bring them back for credit or trade-ins were they losing money.

When the PS6 or 7 comes out as an all digital platform, all Gamestop will have is a retro business. Might as well go that direction now.
And the answer to every version of the question, "Will they be as committed as any specialty retailer?" that you asked in twenty different forms is, "No. Of course not. It's not that kind of retailer."

In the past, a gamer could visit Gamestop on any budget, and be able to walk out with something. No matter if that was a dollar game, or a $5 game. A few years back however, Gamestop decided to stop taking many of the older games, and now, you'd be lucky to find a worthwhile game for $15 or $20, whereas, in the past, you could literally find dozens and dozens of $1 and $2 games. This is how I built most of my next gen collection.
Today however, I only visit Gamestop for certain plush or other items and I've rarely bought a game from them in years. Of course, this is all just a case of a greedy corporation, putting their games low, only to run most game stores out of business and then and only then, when they were the only place in town, raising their prices to about where Wal-mart has their lowest prices. So no thank you Gamestop. Every one hated you in the past, WHEN you were served the community, and now, no one says a word. Crazy and hypocritical in my book. I guess some gamers got what they wanted though, but not me.

Gamestop employee here. Not from a "retro" GS though. Don't get your hopes up on anything you mentioned that you hope/wish GS will/would do. They will definitely not be resurfacing your disks as that would require them spending a good amount of money on a resurfacing machine (can't truly resurface a PS3, Dreamcast, Wii U, or any other blu ray disk for that matter) not to mention them paying to have a 2nd employee to do that. They will also never test a game to make sure it works (consoles they/we do, but not games, not ever). Most GS locations only have one person working all day, which leaves zero chance of them pulling out a console from the back to test each and every game that walks through the door. When it comes to training to spot fakes, good luck with that one too. Me personally, I took the training for spotting fakes nearly a year ago on things such as SNES games, I think I've maybe had only 2 or 3 N64 or SNES games walk in the door, I sure as heck can't remember what to look out for on that front. Didn't even have the tools to open up a cartridge to make sure it was legit or not either till just this past week. GS will also NEVER give you a fair deal on retro games, as they in reality shouldn't, they are there to make money. They at minimum will look to double their investment on any game traded in, as much as triple their money depending on the game. Lastly, GS doesn't just throw away original cases and/or manuals. They take in a game just about any way they can get it. If a customer brings in a game without the case, example especially lately switch games, most people aren't keeping their cases/manuals and are just using a carrying case for all their cartridges (or a CD binder of sorts for disc games). GS will as you said, get a generic case, print out a label for the game just to make it easier for customers to find the game without too much hassle, and sadly sell it for the same price whether it's essentially a loose copy or a complete in box copy.

That’s great information. I got some of the same information and a little different on the keeping cases information from another GameStop employee. The answer is yes, yes they will under pay, yes they will overprice, yes they will sell fake games and yes they will fail. The problem with disc games they sell is they do not grade anything at all. They don't price different for condition, if the item is complete or in it's proper case doesn't matter as it all gets top of market pricing regardless. And if you buy online it's even worse. The only good thing is that you can actually return a online purchased item in store if it is in bad shape but that's is going to lead to people returning their terrible copy and keeping a good quality copy they may have stumbled into at gamestop, then the bad copy will find it's way back in circulation and be purchased by a unsuspecting collector. This will fail!

PSA: CHECK YOUR DISCs like PS1, Dreamcast, and any Cart game you buy from GameStop as they do sell repros!
I don't see the point in this retro store stuff, it should be all stores. You'd figure they want foot traffic and possible subscribers to their pro program.

I think this is pretty cool, I have been to a GameStop Retro store already and they definitely have a whole section dedicated to the retro. Personally I have no issue with Gamestop selling retro, I think anyone who’s a collector knows what they are looking for. Plus Gamestop does have their return policy so if you are unhappy with the game you can always return it. I can definitely see a person who isn’t knowledgeable in retro games having issues with making sure games are authentic or at the right price. Hopefully Gamestop is training employees to see if games are authentic and refurbished. As for the prices of games I have seen Gamestop change prices on older stuff to basically the going rate of what they sell online. It’s unfortunate that Gamestop is now keeping up with the prices of games but not surprising. Everything has shot up in price now that more people are aware that some of these games have value due to the exposure on the internet. At the end of the day, people will pay what they are comfortable with. I definitely wont be paying $95 for Super Mario RPG on the SNES from GameStop but someone else might cause of nostalgia lol. Do not sure on the insight on this retro stores fully. But I always talk to my local staff of about 5-6 GameStops. They do accept returns if it’s not real.as far as I know they don’t throw away game cases and manuals. They keep them with the games. I bought a traded in xenosaga episode 3 with the manual for 100 at one GameStop. What they use to throw away is console boxes, I got a few for free at GameStop before they threw them away, but as of recently they seem to have stopped doing this. One of my local GameStops sold an snes with the box they just kept the box in the back. So there seems like some protocols and policies have changed. As of now I wouldn’t worry too much about them trying to enter the market more actively and simply continue to use them as a tool to hunt for retro games. Their pricing is a bit wait but it can work in your favor sometimes. If you know what to do you can even get them to sell you stuff at more market value as well.

Yea I stopped in a few places today and learned some more about it. They don’t check boards on retro carts, they said it’s up to the store to keep or trash the boxes, cases, or manuals and said some other interesting things. I’m hoping they get a more clear policy on it before things get out of hand.

@@GamerAhmer yes this is why is a great idea to get acquainted with the staff. A few already tell me if they have posters or boxes. Good to know is still up to the stores staff. It seems a lot of the decisions are left up to the stores like price matching which I also use to get better prices.

They aren’t doing this within an hour of where I live, so I’m wondering if they are staying away from areas where the retro market is already saturated? We have a decent number of retro stores here already, and many that have failed.

I think you are making an issue out of nothing. None of the mom and Pop shops in my area do anything special with the games (99% of them aren’t like pink gorilla). On top of that Gamestop gives you seven days to get a full refund even if you just don’t like the game, which is not something any mom and Pop shop does. I think you’re much better off buying, a preowned game from Gamestop and taking your chances.

Unfortunately not all locations are like that. I just went into mine today after this video and asked their policies on the new retro GameStops. Unfortunately it’s not looking good around this way. They need to train their people and be aware of this stuff. I’ve always found deals at GameStop over the years but I prefer certain locations over others. I would hate to see this new retro GameStop idea fail just as it begins because of a lack in training.
