(C) 1991 Fondation du Festival de Jazz de Montreux, exclusively licensed to Eagle Rock Entertainment Ltd.
Toto have welcomed many different band members across their long career but in the early nineties they had a short period as a four-piece featuring Steve Lukather (guitar & lead vocals), David Paich (keyboards & vocals), Jeff Porcaro (drums & percussion) and Mike Porcaro (bass). The line-up, with some additional touring members, performed this concert at Montreux in July 1991 and would go on to make the Kingdom Of Desire album released in 1992, shortly after the tragic early death of drummer Jeff Porcaro. The Montreux show, now being released for the first time, combines then unreleased tracks from the Kingdom Of Desire album with classic hits and covers of songs by Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. It is a perfect addition to any Toto fan’s collection.

Can we take a moment to appreciate how good the camera quality is?
I was thinking that too! It looks like it was filmed yesterday; crazy
Agreed! You are so right.
I keep watching and keep forgetting that this was filmed in 1991. In ‘91, people!! Amazing!! Our Swiss friends,… wow. It any of you, camera people, technicians, crew, staff of this Mountreux festival, is reading this right now, the whole world today is forever thankful to you. You did an incredible job! You couldn’t possibly know that this was going to be Jeff’s last concert ever with Toto, and you still did such a professional job, as always, and left us this beautifully footage. If any of you is reading this, you are awesome! WE ALL THANK YOU!
No I don't have time for that!
And even more important is the sound, or not?
Yeah, and this live broadcast was actually recorded in Full HD 1080i
Steve Lukather is a class act. Guitar players know well how monstrous Luke's playing is, but his SINGING is pretty formidable too!
❤
I fully agree with you. Actually, when I first heard this song when I was very young, about 20 years ago, I didn't even know that Steve is the singer of this song, because I only thought that he is the guitarist of the band.
@@futureright7 yeah, but then you realize that he sing 70% of TOTO song😂
Dude´s a monster when it comes to make iconic solos and defining the chords he´s playing over in a cool yet technical way. Not to mention his fucking singing, my god.
This song is almost 40 years old (1986) and it's still just as good today as when it was released. This is solid gold by Steve Lukather and Toto.
Yeah, thats right! Pure gold
crazy that the 80s was 40 years ago
One of the best ballads ever written. No band could perform it better than Toto. This is one of the songs I can listen to every single day of my life and never get tired of it.
I agree 💯
The depth of heart this song carries is mind numbing..

Jeff's drumming has more class and finess than all the drummers of youtube combined.
Steve's electric guitar solo at 4:03 blows my mind every time. Absolutely incredible.
Yes, very emotional guitar solo ❤
Exactly my friend! This last “as soon as my heaaaaaaarrrrtttttt” screaming, as if he was suffocated by this feeling, and after that this melodic and incredible solo! 🤘🏼
Absolutely!
bass is underrated though
I can't believe this was filmed in 1991 looks like it was filmed yesterday
This concert is available on dvd now, released last year.
This was digitally remastered
As posted before this was recorded with Sony HD cameras in 1991 ( A super version of what became DV codec using analog tape to store the digital frames). Sony demoed this and recorded a few more concerts with these HD cameras but it took until 2001 just for DV to finally take off then die lol. So Enjoy these magic recordings.
@@historygourou Nope. It was copied to digital, but it's native 1080i from the Sony HDVS system. It was an ANALOG HD video format, crazy as that sounds!
@@danfuerthgillis4483 There is some footage here on UA-cam of New York city from 1993 using the same system.
Hi again, BTW.
Steve Lukather is the best rock guitarist playing today. His phrases even when shredding are always so tasteful, and full of feeling.

Oh my God what a guitar solo at the end!!!. Beyond perfection does really exist. This is a proof without any pretensions.

These gentlemen are session musicians of the highest caliber, and they would typically nail their parts in 1 or 2 takes in the studio, so it's nothing for them to pull off a flawless live performance time after time! Luke's solo at the end gives me goosebumps every time. Love it!!! BTW, the video & audio quality are amazing for 1991!🙌
4:37 it's subtle fills like this that are just so damn well-placed, that always put a smile on my face. Jeff played it so solid - even with those accents perfect on the upbeat. Legend!

It's amazing the feeling that you can see him put into this song and I'll bet by this point he had already sung it a countless number of times. I love when you can see a singer just put their entire hearts behind their music.
And actually singing , nowadays 90% of the mainstream music it’s auto tune
You can't see bands like this caliber anymore
you right everything is garbage now! TOTO for ever ❤️🎸
@@diecaverna Some of the music (if you can even call it that) is good, but everything else is garbage. The rap now is just mumbling, and it’s all Pop, Rap and Autotune. Not actual musicians playing instruments and singing. It’s just sad where the music industry went. Today, you can sing La La La, put autoune on your voice and become one of the biggest artists. Back then you had to actually know how to play and sing on key. And, it was a helluva a lot of work.
Yes you can though
@@nickavenoso7851 To be pro in sports you must be VERY good, to be pro in painting/drawing you must be VERY good, to be pro in music you need just autotune and your laptop. That's so bad, it sucks but it's the reality. You don't need skill, practice and theory anymore to live from music or just to make music. Also, the music industry is not about music anymore, it's about earning money fast and low effort.

You know an artist can really sing when they sing this well live
The resolution and quality is amazing for a video recorded live in 1991. Most of the videos from the 80s or early 90s are so bad quality on youtube even from recognized artists. This one is amazing.
This concert was recorded on film. That's why it's so good
Maybe it was recorded with cameras that use 35mm tapes, like those used in movies, until then it was possible to capture images with a quality equivalent to 90% of 4K, from the 2000s, the negatives of 35mm cameras capture images in the equivalent of 64K. And this has been around since 1895, even though it's over 100 years old, if a tape is well preserved you can recover images with the same quality, I hope I helped !!!
@@dancemaniaco That could be the case but I bet that many other bands from the 80s and 90s also recorded their concerts the same way as this but then, did a terrible job moving their recordings to digital at the beginning of youtube, leaving their videos with terrible resolution.
Don't pay attention to the people here saying that this was recorded on film. This was shot on analog HDTV, with Sony HDVS cameras (I forgot the exact models, though). Yes, Japan already had a commercial, consumer-ready HDTV system back in the mid-'90s. Before the system was deployed, japanese engineers would perform tests here and there to test aspects of the format. This is one of them, but UA-cam channel Reely Interesting has a ton of those early HDTV recordings on his/her channel. Sure, the japanese analog HDTV system (aka MUSE or HiVision) flopped hard even in Japan due to being too expensive even by bubble-economy Japan's standards, but at least we have such awesome footage like these.
@@thomasmittelwerk410The production of this footage used 5 cameras 4 Sony HDC-300 3 tube HDVS cameras and one Sony HDC-500 3 CCD HDVS camera. The 5 cameras where fed into an 8 input HDS-1000T switcher a ,live mix was recorded to an HDD-1000 Digital 1" VTR. Three of the cameras where also directly run to their own HDD-1000 VTR (ISO CAMS) so that more shots could be added or changed in post production.
One of the greatest guitar outros of all time.
Great song & performance from the whole band. Luke is one of the premier guitarists of his generation. He could blow everyone away with flash, but he plays with nuance especially on the studio recordings. On stage he gets to let more out, but never at the expense of the song. Long live TOTO
Steve Lukather + TOTO = Absolute Legends!
Damn this is super clear for 1991!

did digi cam exist in 91? the video is cristal clear..
@neilsan santos There was a analog hd Cam that they used, I think by Sony. they just hardly used it given at the time the digital systems werent compatible with it so they waited for technology to catch up. So its used here and there and this is one of those vids :)
well, im very surprised in the quality of this video, imagine, it was taken in 1991.. thank you for your inormation..
Damn! That is one of the most heartfelt guitar solos. You can just feel the pain on those notes. Wow!

The magic of timeless music........
Who's still watching to this Legendary band in 2023?
Sound and video quality is amazing. It's hard to believe that it was recorded in 1991.

@@dancemaniaco Nop. It was recorded using Sony HDVS. From comment under other film:
""The entire Jazz Festival was recorded using the Sony HDVS system, 1125 lines interlaced analog component video signal. with 16x9 aspect ratio. So it is basically 1080i when converted to digital. The audio was recorded with 2 Sony 48 track DASH digital recorders at 16 bit resolution 48 KHz sample rate.
The VTR's used to record the concert recorded the analog component HD video digitally along with separate 8 channel 16 bit 48 Khz audio, so a 8 channel audio sub mix was fed to the truck to be recorded to the tape with the video.
The production used 5 cameras 4 Sony HDC-300 3 tube HDVS cameras and one Sony HDC-500 3 CCD HDVS camera (a prototype). The 5 cameras where fed into an 8 input HDS-1000T switcher a ,live mix was recorded to an HDD-1000 Digital 1" VTR. Three of the cameras where also directly run to their own HDD-1000 VTR(ISO CAMS) so that more shots could be added or changed in post production.
The entire system of 4 VTR's and 2 DASH audio recorders was synced through the use of SMPTE time code.
The output of the switcher was also fed through a Sony HDN-22000 NTSC/PAL down-converter, the output of which was recorded on Betacam SP and D2 to allow local broadcast outlets have copies of the jazz festival for use in their broadcasts.""
