  • Today we're (finally) taking a look at the Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti Founders Edition. I found this card second hand online for just a few pounds more than RRP, so what's the catch, and should you take a risk on a used GPU at the moment?

    Those earlier Seasonic Focus PSUs were known to drop out from high transient spikes with Vega GPUs. It's odd that it's only happening with this 3060 and that you haven't had it happen already, but the PSU is still good in general. It just triggers the safety shutoff. Later revisions of it (past late 2018 iirc) were fixed.

    • @tourmaline07
      @tourmaline07 2 роки тому +2

      Used to have a Vega 64 which I reckon was pulling 400W from the power connectors - and this with an undervolt on the core (albeit max power limit) . They are very finicky and they can crash in strange ways (and occasionally reset the system) if they are undervolted and I wonder if some of that is due to current draw from the core/hbm spiking massively. I have a Corsair 850W RMi PSU, and was going to get the 750W one but the extra 100W was an extra £5 on Amazon. Glad I did or I'd have struggled more with my Vega 64!

    • @TempleKa

      My Seasonic Focus 750W Platinum that I bought at the end of 2017 can't handle my new RTX 3080Ti without undervolting. The PC just shuts off in some games. It works fine with GPU at 1860Mhz and 0.875V. It's good that the power supply has a 10 year warranty though and I can send it for a replacement hopefully soon. Too bad I need my PC daily for work and didn't have the time.

      @@TempleKa When I contacted them, I explained my problem and what GPU I had, then I sent them forum threads where other people found the reason why the power supply protection was activated, the solution was to use PCI-e cables without the capacitors on line, that's why they sent new cables.
      You have to send them the model of your PSU and GPU, and refer other people with the same problem.
      If they refuse, just do what they tell you.
      I did all of this so I don't have to ship and wait for the warranty (I live outside of the US).

    I just bought a second hand RTX 3080 for MSRP and was worried it would have been mined on. Imagine my surprise when it turned up with the original plastic still on and in perfect condition, not a spec of dust anywhere to be seen. If it had been used, that plastic would have dust stuck to the inside of it. So this must be either unused, or as close to it as possible.

    • @reik019
      @reik019 2 роки тому +7

      I would be more concerned about a card from a previous gamer than from a miner if I'm being honest.
      You never know how many times the card had been dusted off, if any.
      You don't know on what case it was stuck inside, and how much airflow (or the lack of) it suffered.
      You don't know if the power supply used to power it was adequate.
      And you don't know for real if the card was overclocked, not like overclocking is the issue, the issue comes from neglect in terms of changing the thermal interfaces to be adequate enough to handle the extra heat.
      Oh, and you don't know for sure if the card was liquid metal modded, if done incorrectly it can cause quite the short circuits and case pollution if there was too much liquid metal.
      Most miners take care of their equipment or else it's not profitable to have a card failing on each rack every 5 weeks, gamers do not in most instances.

    I'm a miner and it's literally more profit to run cards at 80% power limit and underclocked core so silicon of nearly all cards should be unharmed.
    Though the fans might be dood from frunning 100% 24/7 (I run cooler cards, 3070 and lower at around 60% fan speeds so should last much longer).
    Also avoid any zotac cards, nearly all have fan failures.
    Another thing it's best to buy from larger miners, those are usually experienced and take better care of the cards than amateurs, so if you see one card for sale vs another listing with 10+ of the same card go for the multi qty listing.
    Lastly it's predicted the prices of the crypto will start going back up and so the mining around early 2023 so you want to buy your card before that time, though that's just pure speculation.
    Happy discount GPU shopping!

    As someone who got VERY lucky and snagged a Founders Edition 3060 Ti at launch, I've been really happy with it. Pretty much 1440p everything (or 4k with sensible compromises). Plus I've been using it for work stuff as well as gaming, and it's very good overall.
    Also, I wouldn't worry majorly about mining on these - miners will undervolt and it doesn't run hot (unlike the issues with GDDR6x in other higher end models). Maybe new thermal pads and fans in a year or two - but GPU fans are usually rated for anywhere from 50,000 hours use upwards anyway (which is 5+ years of 24/7 use).

      @@Adzy2k1 I know what you mean, it's definitely a big limiting factor for 4k (without using DLSS or similar), which I get because its essentially dealing with double the number of pixels vs 1440p (and 4x 1080p!); but the memory bus has plenty of bandwidth too so I've not noticed a lot of asset streaming issues (I do only use SDDs though, so not sure if drive speed is a factor). Little changes like dropping textures or shading from 'ultra' levels can also make a big difference imo as I often don't notice the differences much. Its not many times I've really run into it though - Flight Simulator for example is a complete Vram hog!

    The reason why your PSU shut off with this card is that the 3060Ti and higher-end cards tend to induce transient load spikes that overpower the PSUs wattage (sometimes, over 500W spikes on the highest-end cards), causing it to kick in its protection circuits.

    • @mikeymaiku
      @mikeymaiku 2 роки тому +2

      Lol that should be true only for 3080 and above.
      Its hard to beleive a single pcie connector card can pull more than 200w.
      75w from pcie / 125w from the pcie.
      Last i checked they are good for more than 200w power delivery wise.

    • @tourmaline07
      @tourmaline07 2 роки тому

      The 3060ti should not be powerful enough to pull down enough current to shut down a 550w PSU on its own. Wonder if the unit might be on it's way out?

    My Seasonic SII2 620W was always very quiet with a R5 2600+GTX 1060, for almost 5 years. But when I bought an RTX 3060, this PSU went very quickly to high rotation on the fan every time, even with undervolt configured (the system never shut down). There is something on this GPUs that certainly draws much power, compared to Pascal or other arquitectures. I ended up buying a Fractal Design ION+ 660W Platinum, now my system is much more quiet.

    My 11 year old 850w Seasonic PSU is still running fine, although the beefiest card it ever ran was GTX 680 Ti. Now it has a GTX 1060 6GB. 550w is perhaps on the brink of optimism for a card like RTX 3070, seeing these cards boosts quite a lot and the power spikes much higher. Anyway, I love that you cover the low end/mid range hardware. Useful for us that can't always afford top of the line.

    bro I really can't believe it, u saved me from restoring my windows. I also have an rtx 3060 ti and out of nowhere started getting random black screens when using full screen on my pc, or at some games such as god of war when starting. I have a 650w 80plus bronze psu and it was really weird having that issue when my psu is way better than what it is recommended. So I saw u changed the psu, I tried changing some power configuration at msi afterburner, using 80% of power (which is the usual usage while gaming), and I solved my whole black screen problem, thank u so much for this video.

    Waited in EVGA's queue system for a 3060 Ti FTW3 Ultra and bought it 10/26/2021 for $514 , It has been running great at 1080P 144Hz, CPU is a little older (i7 8700K) but no problems staying above 60fps with everything cranked up, It's my first card to feature 0 RPM fans so they only run when playing games which is a nice thought for fan long term reliability, max temp I've seen is 71C during gaming and thats with all 3 fans at 66-67% under load (stock fan profile) so the card is always pretty quiet too.

    Yeah the issue with the power supply and the 30 series nvidia gpu seems to be quite common. I bought a 3070 and it was working with my coolermaster 650w power supply for like 3 months before it started to crash and sometimes dont even output a display. Initially i thought the pcie lane was busted but my pc ran fine when i ran it with my old gtx 1080 so the pcie wasnt the problem. So the issue could be a faulty gpu or psu. My friend told me the 30 series card has a power spiking issue and when i replaced my 650w with a 850w one my 3070 ran fine with no issues up to this day. I cant even imagine how the people who built a new pc and thinking they got defective parts even though it was just their gpu power spiking feel, hopefully they fix this issue soon!

    Mining cards are a double edged sword. You know for certain they will have been ran for a long time but at the same time the chances are higher that thermal pads may have been replaced, temps will have been kept acceptable and card will have been kept clean. Obviously it's still a gamble nomatter who you're buying from but things to keep in mind. Would still prefer new stock if upgrading any time soon.

  • @RANDOMNATION907
    @RANDOMNATION907 2 роки тому

    Something to consider in regards to buying a mining card. GPUs are designed to sit in an 'upright' case with the GPU in a horizontal position. When you stand a card on it's edge, with the PCIe connector down. Those fans are now hanging sideways. This accelerates the fan bushing/bearings wear. The number one cause of failure in a mining GPU is a failed fan that allows the card to run hotter. If you buy a mining card and when connected you find it has an inoperable fan, perhaps skip over-clocking it. As it's likely already been heat stressed.

    • @reik019

      @@RandomGaminginHD Even better, replace the worn fans with a set of new ones, they aren't that costly honestly, for FE cards, they usually sell you a set for 5 USD regardless of the card you will repair.
      If you can't replace them, a quick fix for dead fans is getting a bottle of Silicone Oil and pouring a bit on the bushing (remember to remove the sticker behind the fan first), let it sit like that for half a day, put the sticker back on the fan and reinstall the fans again, they should be good to go again.
