I would respond by pointing out that the multilateralism of NATO has never been less certain. The mixed response to Ukraine demonstrated by, for example Germany’s reluctance, speaks to that point. The US seems bent or once again trying to escape into the fantasy of splendid isolation. This is particularly true of Trump but is a larger theme present in the Biden administration as well. As a side point, in reference to comments concerning the pt and no longer being in the Cold War, I’d suggest we are fooling ourselves, the Cold War never ended.
Britain, as a viable fighting force, has now reached the absolute bottom of its capability. It has been stripped and left with nothing capable of fielding any form of army into the field. Same with the RAF and the Navy has ships it cannot even staff. So, all this is pretty academic.
Ukraine is the grey zone they talked about years ago, the lines where people dont have a policy for or know how to combat until it happens, all our other pacts and commitments are steadfast, some politicking from macron about france pulling out, but thats it, German hesitation only natural, its on there door step they have a right to consider the problem longer or shorter than everyone else.

How does fighting some fishermen in the Red Sea for couple of weeks show we can defend ourselves in a war?
