This is such horribly sad news. The Clean are such an important band for so many of us. Thank you for this video highlighting his drumming. I love flying nun's whole catalogue but the clean were my introduction and they will always hold special place in my heart. The NZ jangle is like nothing else.

Couldn't agree more Russ. His drumming was key but a great songwriter too. Been a heavy week of their music. Hope all is well.

I stumbled on your video as I was looking for info regarding his passing. I'm a close cousin of his wife (and son) and got to know him well during his time here in the States. We're all in a bit of shock at the moment-your kind words and insight into his colossal artistic capabilities are more than welcome. I'm so thankful you made this video. Hamish seemed so incredibly humble about what an impact his creativity was having on others.

Man thank you. I am discovering even in these few days after how talented he was. And how I've criminally ignored his later work, solo and otherwise. I am digging into that stuff now. And really liking the latest band, Sundae Painters. Thanks for getting in touch!

Such sad news. The Clean are special and have such happy memories of the music and times when I first heard of them. Lovely tribute. This news really got to me.

Appreciate it Rev. Took a walk down memory myself thinking about when I discovered them and the song we used to play in my band "Billy Two". Love this band. Be well

A lovely tribute. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
For those of us who were teenagers in NZ in the 80s, The Clean was a seismic shift in how we were represented on vinyl. While Toy Love with Chris Knox had paved the way it was the arrival of The Clean that gave us something we could be truly excited and proud of.
I was privileged to see them play as The Clean and later The Great Unwashed. Those early 45s and EPs are still treasured.
We all have that 'one that got away' concert' and mine was 1982 and The Fall on their first tour of NZ with The Clean opening. I know where I am going when the time machines arrive.
My original Boodle pressing did not have the comic, so had to grab the merge re-release. Somewhere along the way my Getting older 7" and The Great Unwashed LP have gone astray. But I do treasure the other originals I still have. Including the hand-painted sleeve for the double 7" by The Great Unwashed. If you try and keep the vinyl in the sleeves it will destroy them.
Thanks again for the video. I am sure I am not the only one reeling after hearing of Hamish's passing.

Wow, amazing comment. thank you for writing and how I'd love to have been there in those times. So cool you had the opportunity to see that Fall tour. I'm guessing that was the show that eventually came out on Flying Nun that Mark E Smith tried to have banned? I just finally bought that Great Unwashed EP, the 12" version in the different colored sleeves for precisely that reason: the sleeve destroyed all the records! No matter, still valuable cause its Flying Nun. The song from that EP "Born At The Wrong Time' I've been singing all week. So amazing. take care and be well

Great tribute to a legend of incalculable influence. I'm sure there are many people listening to music that they maybe unaware that without Hamish & the Clean probably wouldn't exist. You have a fantastic collection of originals too. Cheers..Ben

@@seekingathread Thanks mate. Steve is a champ. My focus is Australian music, but as we have a close connection to the Kiwis & I’ve seen a lot of their bands over the years & collected their records I thought it would be cool to do a few episodes showing some of the amazing NZ music I own. I have had a quick scan through your channel & I see a lot of bands that I like. I’m guessing we have pretty similar taste. Cheers….Ben

Fortunate to see The Clean with Yo La Tengo at the Great American Music Hall in SF ages ago. Hamish was thrashing the skins in the motorik fashion you described, a stellar performance. I’m very sad about this news and appreciate commiserating with you here. Long live The Clean! Most of my favorites are David on vocals. Born In The Wrong Time, I Can’t Find Water, Hold On To The Rail, Drawing To A (W)hole, Beatnik, etc. For some reason I love the Song Gem from Vehicle, a Hamish track. It’s slight, brooding and an odd way to end the album but I love it. RIP Hamish.

Well done, Dom. I've only recently explored The Clean. Mostly due to Dean. Only have two of the recent Merge reissues. Really should dive into their earlier output more. Sad news, indeed. I messaged Dean earlier today when I saw the story post. Also sent him a link of your video.

Nice man, thanks for sending along to Dean. I kind of wished I would've said more but also I did 2 hours on the radio about Hamish yesterday which I shall be posting tout suite.

This just popped up thx to the algorithm (thanx YT)
This is a great tribute to Hamish. Underrated talent. Incredible loss.
I’ve discovered all these live recordings around Brooklyn in tiny places & wish I’d known he was out there in my neighborhood doing things.
Kicking myself for not making more of an effort to get to these events, but I usually only find out about them after the fact.
I only saw him playing at the Brooklyn Flea once when I was working(immediately went awol for the short set) I can’t recollect the band hame, but his sound was unmistakable.
I’ll have to find & tune in to your show, thanks again.

That's pretty cool, seeing him at Brooklyn Flea. I used to frequent that quite a bit. I could have seen him a bunch of times as well but just ended up seeing the Clean at Cake Shop. Happy for at least. take care!

Never saw The Clean. I don't remember a time where they were ever in Los Angeles. Hope you're well, Dom - TONE

Doing ok Tone, good to hear from you. He was on the first LP yes and the first 2 eps / singles as well. Good band though some of the records have a bit of that dated 80s production. I do want those first few, do not have.

A very nice eulogy from a fan. Thank you. I only disagree with the statement that the 'later records after Vehicle aren't good'. There are great songs all the way through to Mr Pop which is an all-over terrific album, just like Modern Rock. Anyway, Vale Hamish.

I need to listen to them so more. I have all the CDs of the later Clean LPs. For example I played Crazy yesterday from Getaway, sung by Hamish, and forgot how good that song is. Just this week I'm finding out how great he was with records I hadn't really digested. thanks!
