How to ● Dry a Wet Fitted Basement Carpet ( With Little Effort ! )

  • This is by far the easiest way to dry a wet fitted carpet in your basement. You have a choice of 3 things. Remove it and toss it, remove it and hang it out to dry or leave it where it is and create a small slit in the carpet and sit back and relax while it dries. It is by far the easiest method to completely dry it without removing it by only creating a small slit. First use your shop vac to suck up as much of the water as you can, secondly, cut a small slit in the carpet in a non traffic or hidden area big enough to insert the end of a shop vac. Thirdly, attach the shop vac hose to the blowing side of the shop vac and take the other end and insert it into the slit in the carpet. Now the easy part starts. Just turn on the vacuum and watch the whole carpet levitate from the warm shop vac air being blown between the carpet and the floor. The warm air will travel threw all the fibres of the carpet evenly and dry it. Now let it run for days until it is dry. Shop vacs can run for very long periods of time without a problem. It's best to not leave it running while you are not at home just to be sure. Once it's dry you can try cutting a slit in the under-padding and blow the air between the padding and floor to help it dry further. Sometimes the under-padding isn't porous enough to let air escape so experiment to see if it will work. Good luck. You don't need it though. This is too easy!

What a great idea! Sucked up excess water with Bissell carpet machine, laid towels down and walked on them, then cut a slit in the carpet, stuck a crevice cleaning tool in it, hooked up the old Shop Vac, and wow! What a relief. Thanks Chris.

Well Chris, the tank of water above us flooded our flat because some copper pipes went missing. My daughter' s bran new carpet she had paid for herself with some of her gap year money was soaked in water ready for the tip...now then... I saw your video last night, went to Screwfix this morning to get another Titan (mine had lost the blower tube) followed your instructions exactly and the rest you all know. It is now drying beautifully guys. You have made a lot of people happy. She just started Uni at St Andrews and won't be broken hearted when she comes home

Thank you for your video! We had some ground water come into to our basement and soak our carpet and pad. I am using two 6.5 shop vacs, one mine and the other borrowed from a neighbor. I am currently drying about 740 sq feet. Instead of cutting a hole I just lifted the carpet in the corners of the room or where it ends at a doorway. It is amazing how far the air blows underneath. The carpet and pad are drying fantastically. I plan to buy a carpet stretcher from harbor freight for about $22 to put the corners back in place after the drying process. So far it’s been about 20 hours of drying and I have seen a HUGE difference. I’m expecting about 3 days to complete the entire area. Once again, many thanks for you video!!

EXCEPTIONAL technique and thank you for it! It did a splendid job of drying the carpet and especially if you can get the end of the vacuum under the underlay. The blowing creates a little vibration as the carpet levitates so you get levitation, heat, and vibration to do a fantastic job of drying out the carpet and underlay and floor too. I also found I could use the wet-dry vacuum extensions and push these further under the carpet and underlay to extend the drying action. We had a hot water tank leak that seaped into the carpet nearby.
All we had to do was sacrifice a bit of carpet to create that X with a knife to insert the vac hose and then set some furniture over it afterwards. Thx again!

I would also add that I rented an extractor from home depot to get as much water as possible and then used this technique to dry it. I did make multiple holes in the room because of the amount of wetness. I literally had water under the carpet.
EDIT: To add too, I was in a basement when this happened too and had access to a drain. I did MULTIPLE go overs with the extractor first. It was alot of work with the extractor over a 2-3days. It was alot of water with the carpet boiling up with water to start. Once I felt the water was mostly gone, I used this technique with multiple air vacs in corners of the room pointing towards the center and let them run for 24+ hours over multiple days.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for this very helpful email. I had a water heater soak a wall to wall carpet. I had NO IDEA that the air would "levatate" or circulate UNDER the carpet (thus drying out the pad and concrete (in my case) underneath). LOVE the idea of cutting the x in inconspious place and sealing it up (another life (&and carpet) saver. I let this run for 2 plus days ( I was a bit concerned about shop vac motor "buring out" but they works like champs. I was also running multiple floor fans (might not have bben necessary with this method) AND a dehumidifier. Thank you again for this AWESOME video!

A big part of our basement carpeting was wet after a water back up. Using towels, towels, and more towels we got the top fairly dry but not enough. Then, using two shop vacs, one mine and one an uncle's we followed the directions in this video, lifting the carpeting at the edges and pushing the tube underneath both the carpet and pad. (Didn't have to cut the carpet that way) I used longish screws, drilled them into the carpeting and pad to lift them up further than the vac alone would do. It took a lot of work, but after two weeks of leaving the vacs running all day, not at night, we saved the carpeting and pad. I also used a dehumidifier a lot. Great idea! Thank you!

Bruh! THANK YOU 😊 For this video!! Yesterday, I was mopping my bathroom floor and I accidentally hit the toilet water valve too hard. Water came gushing out of the wall directed right toward the door and into the office carpet! Uuuuggggh!! I ran and grabbed the main valve tool and flew outside! I had to dig up 2 feet of sand just to get to the cut off. The water must have ran 3 to 4 minutes, since it flooded the whole middle of the room! I worked until 5 am in the morning sucking up the excess water with a shop vac and a capet cleaner. I put fans out and fell asleep! Today the capret is damp but I was sure the pad was a soaked disaster! Then I found your video and cut the slit into the carpet. The pad was still soaked underneath! Thanks for this helpful idea! GFC stained the concrete floor in my sun room and left me with a sopping wet under-felt over a large area of my adjacent living room. After several days of struggling with fans and a dehumidifier, I now tucked my shop vac in there instead. I keep moving it on the hour, to spread the air some over the large area, since the carpet has an open end to the sun room. Taped it shut with painters tape to minimize the escaping air. THANKS A LOT!

It's been a couple of years since I first found this when trying to clean up a flood in our basement. It worked great then, and still works great now in the rest of the basement floods we've had. One helpful think I've found to do is to use the sucking part of the vacuum under the carpet to suck up as much water as you can before blowing. You can usually get a lot of it up without any effort.

the problem: When you have a carpet with a rubber / spongy carpet pad. A large amount of water will be trapped under the pad that is laying on concrete. Unfornitly this cannot be dried without removing the pad. If you don't dry / remove the soaked pad, you now have to worry about mold, witch is harder to get rid of the moisture

Once you dry the carpet with this method, why couldn’t you cut through the pad as well and put the hose underneath the pad to try and bring that off the floor with the same method? Of course the pad and the carpet would be heavier so you might need to either cut one or two holes or use a longer vacuum wand to get farther underneath the pad.

@@ledang9584 No problem, we have a carpet in one of our upstairs bedrooms that got partially soaked, meaning not the whole area, but the carpet and the underpad both soaked in one large area. I was able to get the shopvac wand under both the carpet and underpad from two access points, one being a transition area to the bathroom tile, and a hole I cut like he demonstrated in the video. so I dried the carpet first, then got underneath the underpad. I did have to use Gorilla tape to block off the area around the wand so air couldn't escape. That way the carpet and underpad both came up off the floor when the vacuum was on. Both took a day or two each. After that I sprayed mold inhibitor with a spray canister and wand. The carpet is now dry and doesn't smell at all so it seemed to work very well.

Not sure why you need to cut a hole in the carpet. You could just pull up the edge from the tackless strip and run the hose under it. When the carpet is dry just push the carpet back down onto the strip. If it needs a little tightening you can do that too pretty easily.

Thank you sir for a superb money saving tip. I had an overflowing toilet bowl that flooded my private bathroom and adjoining bedroom with 2" of water before I found it. The carpet was saturated with water about 3-4 feet into my bedroom carpet from the bathroom entrance. I went into panic mode knowing this was going to be a costly project. Initially, I used a Rainbow vacuum cleaner to suck up as much water as i could and started thinking how I was going to get the water from the pad underneath the carpet. It would never dry unless you pulled it up and dried with fans or replace it. Should I call a commercial company and have them fix the problem or have the carpet replaced I asked my self and then I saw your video. I purchased a wet/dry vac from Lowes and followed your instructions and 8-10 hours later, I had a dry carpet and pad. The area to be dried wasn't that large so it didn't take take too long. I can't imagine how much money people have saved that used your procedure. Thank you so much.
PS I have never seen a toilet bowl overflow that didn't have a stoppage in the drain pipes. The flapper valve in the tank didn't close properly so continuous water was flowing into the bowl until it overflowed. I flushed the toilet immediately when I found the problem so there was no stoppage. I also simulated the problem several times and I cant get it to overflow again so I am in a quandary on why it happened. Maybe you or some of the readers can offer some advice on this issue. Thanks again.

I had the exact same problem and no idea what happened. Flapper open for about three hours with continuous running. Bowl was empty but floor had about an inch of water.

Sounds like yall might have a bad toilet ring, they're usually made out of wax and either get damaged during the installation or use, or degrades over time. I'm replacing all of mine with rubber rings.

What if the carpet is really wet? We had a huge rainstorm, looks like the water came up through the slab.

I wonder if, in extreme cases, you could cut 2 crosses then put your blower in one to lift the carpet and the suction one in another to remove the water

I used the same technique to dry behind the drywall after a minor basement flood.

Thank you!! We're going to try this in a bit. I'm concerned we might have mold in the walls surrounding the carpet, if so, could this possibly spread mold spores?? Thank you!

I wonder... it might be possible to cut a slightly longer line, vs an X, and thus easier to hide the hole...

Yes. Cut whatever shape is best for you. What you suggest would be fine.

I just tried it and it's working our subpump back to battery went dead and we had a big storm and we lost power for over 18 hours and our back up battery went dead and we came home from work with water in our basement. My wife and I have been working on getting our carpet dried up and it was a slow process and I was thinking how can I dry the carpet with out taking it up and when I seen this video I said to myself what the hell I will give it a try and it's working. After I had all four of my shop vac's up and running I looking at the carpet and I said we'll S*** LMAO it's working.
