    I cried the first time I heard this way back in the day. And I cried again today. These young men, (now in their mid to late twenties) played that piece of music beautifully

    the PDX School of Rock opened several years ago and they now have a location on Hawthorne in SE. They train kids from 6-18 years of age to shred. I was doing a favor for a friend of mine when I was turned onto these kids. Pretty darn impressive.
    Keeping Portland weird.

    I'm glad Zappa is so revered right now...back in the 80s he was seen by most main stream music critics as some sort of weird Al Yankovic of music...this kid is rocking it!

    That was excellent! A very complex piece, done beautifully. Frank would have loved to hear this by you young artists. He was a fanatic when it came to practice and rehearsal, and you all showed a discipline beyond your years. CUDOS!!

    I fully applaud you - all of you. First, that you even KNOW of this is great. Second, you treat it with reverence, which it deserves. Third, you play it with feeling - and that's so much of what makes this tune great. Ignore the detractors here, and keep doing what you are doing. Be proud of your accomplishment. Seriously, I'm floored that given your youth, you 'get' this piece and play it as well as you do. Kudos to one and all, and remember, disregard the haters. "Music...is THE BEST"

    One of the greatest instrumentals of all time executed so very well. And although it's not exactly true to FZ guitar stylings, your economy picking around 4:10 is sweet and well-positioned in this tune. Very very impressive.

    The song is far too beautiful to not be played. Very, very well done. Listening to this in the context of Joe's Garage is amazing, amidst all the vulgarity and lude themes is one of the most beautiful themes ever written.

    Be sure to check out 'Apostrophe' and 'Inca Roads' as well. Top notch. Inca is a little sloppy but as far as I know Dweezil rarely attempts it. Sick

      Dweezil's 1997 "Inca Roads" with N. Murphy Brock, Sheila Gonzalez Sloppy?
      Outside of Frank's Helsinki solo it's the Greatest Solo I have ever witnessed.
      But, that's my feeling.
      Thanks

    I'm not entirely sure if this is apocryphal, but didn't FZ request this not be played after his passing? Perhaps DZ is honoring that wish. That said, I very enthusiastically applaud this spot-on reading of one of my favorite songs of all time. To the young gentleman with the white SV model--your picking fluency is indeed impressive. For this tune, I'd maybe be slightly more judicious in note choice. But only a small suggestion from a guy who will NEVER play as well as you. Awesome performance.

    • @paulinebutcherbird
      @paulinebutcherbird 7 років тому +1

      There seems to be some confusion: some people assert that Frank asserted that no one should record this song except Dweezil Zappa, while others think Frank asserted that no one else but Dweezil should play it. Either way, I think it was arrogant and short-sighted to make such a demand for such a beautiful piece of music that requires as much exposure as possible because not many people would be able to play it.

  • @dylanwood2287
    @dylanwood2287 8 років тому +2

    as a student at the sorpdx, dispite the amazing musicianship, dissaprove of this because frank zappa did not want this song played after his death (dweezil as an exeption)

    • @zolarczakl6486
      @zolarczakl6486 8 років тому +1

      To Brickpunch and Dylan;
      I think the song cannot be offiically "recorded and released" by anybody outside of the Zappa family. Nobody could be banned from playing it. That said, Colin Towns & NDR Big Band released a live recording of Zappa music, including Watermelon. Don't know how he got the rights to release it.

    • @paulinebutcherbird
      @paulinebutcherbird 7 років тому +2

      Very short-sighted, don't you think.

    • @StoogesOfTheFuture
      @StoogesOfTheFuture 7 років тому +3

      it's a myth. there is no info whatsoever that could lead anyone to that conclusion. but I do believe that the Zappa family. with the exception of Dweeil and Moon Unit. would charge you to the bone for it. but as a cover. they can play whatever they want. it's not like Frank Zappa is going to rise from the grave to tell them not to

    The leads overdid it. Classical beginner's mistake, eager to show off legato runs and arpeggios, but has no feel or emotion. They both ruined the essence - tenderness and softness- of the tune, but I guess by know they have learnt. Holy shit, tapping! Really!? REALLY!? For christ sake, guys!
