Great video Kimberly ❣️❣️
Thank you for taking the time to show the details that sometime we novice quilters miss❤️❤️❤️
I am so glad I have used this tutorial. This 67 year old is making her first quilt. Thank you for the clear instructions and encouragement .
This 52 year old is making her first quilt. Got the blocks put together then got scared..I as well am now at ease and will finish it
I have been enjoying this series so much. I’m a stay at home mom to two young children, and my husband is currently deployed, so these videos give me a little something to look forward to each week, as well as some welcome distraction. They’ve also given me the confidence to start quilting. I’m hoping I can build my skills enough to eventually make my husband a quilt of valor. Thank you so much Kimberly!
I am a huge fan of pinning. I now get accurate beautiful blocks, and that makes me so happy. Thank you Kimberly! I love how often you say, if you get frustrated, just walk away. That’s a good reminder that this process should be fun and satisfying, not icky.
Thank you Kimberly for showing how to make a quilt from start to finish. I’m 82 and just decided to try quilting instead of knitting and sewing
🤚🏽💖
I have been quilting for years and found out how to improve my quilts with your techniques. Best step by step tutorial I have seen. Thank you.
This beginner quilt series has been a great refresher course for me. I have been quilting for a long time and it is always good to get a refresher.
I really enjoyed these videos. I learned steps that will really help me with my quilts. Thank you Kimberly😃
Bless you for these begginer videos. Your lector series is far superior than the others. I have learned so much.
Wow! Your attention to detail in these videos has been amazing!
Thanks for being so meticulous about every little detail, SO helpful!
I want to follow along on this beautiful quilt. So calming to quilt- thank you for this time -
Would you ever make another series like this? That would be amazing
My favorite quilt was Patchwork Sky, so beautiful in the colors she chose❤️❤️❤️
Best tutorial ever for first time quilters. Thank you Kimberly
This has been such a thoroughly informative tutorial. I appreciate the detailed instruction and little hints you have given from your experience. I can't thank you enough! This was so well explained and helped me to look at the borders as part of the process and not race to the finish.
Thank you for all your great tutorials, you inspired me in to having a go. I have made a quilt for one of my daughters for Christmas, I just hope she likes it. Just need to get some more fabric to make my other children one as well. I'm so glad you're tutorials are easy to understand and follow. A BIG THANK YOU. Happy sewing. Xxx 💖💝 💗
You are a great teacher thanks for sharing all your wonderful tips. Thanks for remembering that you are talking to beginners blessings
Kimberly I have loved this series. So excited that I’m almost done. You are a great teacher💖
Thank you Kimberly for the great tutorial's , as a beginner I found them wonderfully helpful !!
This has been so helpful as I learn to be successful in my quilting process. Thank you for taking time to explain and talk slowly. 🌺💕
Excellent series Kimberly, but this one you really did a good job teaching! Nobody showed me how to square my quilts. I had been making quilts for about 4 years before I saw it done on UA-cam (probably a FQS tutorial). Five stars!
My goodness! I’ve been trimming the sashing AND sewing with sashing on top. No wonder they came out short. Thank you 🤗
I've been afraid of sashing, this was really helpful
What a great viseo! this is the first of this series I found, will definitely be watching from the beginning.
What a great series! I can’t believe I finished this quilt top and Kimberly’s wonderful videos were extremely helpful and well done. Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing all your tips and tricks to put all the quilt together!!!🥰
Thank you for this video, it was so in depth! Great for a beginner, I even learned a few things!
I finished making 16 quilt blocks but wasn't given information about piecing together, so this information is much appreciated.
Kimberly you are amazing, so consistent, what a great teacher.
That was brilliant and so easy to follow. I really like the fact you explained your methodology and your immense patience, thank you this was invaluable to me
Kimberly, thank you so much for such good precise instructions that will help me be a better quilter and also enjoy the process. You are so right about taking time to finish your quilt, taking a break, not rushing, and coming back to do a good job on something on which you have devoted so much of your time. Your continual tips throughout are so helpful. Appreciate your patient teaching manner. 😊
Autumn love. Loved that line so much. I only have scraps left.
I was so excited to make the next block but I'm already done 😢. I've loved this project. Your hint about sashing was so helpful! This is a project I will make again! Thanks 😊
Oh my goodness I am so glad you did this tutorial!!
Kimberly you make a mean quilt and I appreciate you sharing your ideas I've had to put them together so quickly and why you do certain things that you do thank you so much and may God continue to bless you your channel and your family from your new friend Ella Bransford:-).
Thank you for this series!
Amazing, never seen border added this way. Have to try it. Thank you
Beautiful!! Thank you so much for your patience and experience in teaching through an amazing series!
it is also helpful to see things in real time, e.g. how long it really takes to iron properly
Zenjoyed from start to finish
Great video Kimberly. Thank you for the tip on backstitching when sewing the borders on. Don't think I've ever heard that before but it definitely makes sense. Can't wait to finish my quilt top!
Thank you!
I have learned so much! Sewing with the sashing on the bottom makes a huge difference. It worked out so nicely!
Wow 🙏 Thank you very much for your video. I am gonna make my first quilt 😊
Another great tutorial thank you so much for all the video’s and all the tips you have shared👏👏😊😊❤️❤️❤️🌷
Awesome video Kimberly! Watching you handle the large cuts of fabric is sew helpful! You're the best!
I have been sewing for about 1 year. Your tips are amazing, especially the tip to measure with the ruler instead of the mat. I also tried pinning and it really makes a big difference. Thank you for all your tips and for the free pattern. So far i made 3 blocks and i love them!
Great video, thank you! This is very helpful!
Thank you so much for these videos that are so clear and informative. I am really excited to make one asap.
Thank you for such a wonderful series ! I learned so much
Thank you! Very informative!
good pinning technique - much easier to work around while at the sewing machine instead of taking big bites out of the fabric
Excellent 💕
Well I just got my quilt top done, "not quilted" , I had to take a break away from it for awhile, been making other things.. So I did finish it..and will quilt later , still have another I have been free motion quilting on, even though I really don't know how ha.. Thanks for the video..
Beautiful
Kimberly thank you for this series, you are an amazing teacher. I wonder if you can answer a question for me regarding straightening fabric. I thought the fabric had to be folded in half then held out and moved and wiggled (for lack of a better word) until the bottom fold is straight then cut off the uneven edge. Do you do this?
Great job. I learned a lot. I do have a question. Why do you trim the fabric to make a straight edge on the right side of the fabric and then rotate the quilt to start cutting from the left side. Why not just cut on the left side?? Thanks!
Because if you do it from the left side, you have nothing to line your ruler up with to make sure you are cutting straight.
Make sure you have one long line before cutting the quarter inch
Thanks for the video! I am wondering though, how you handle larger quilts that don't fit on an ironing board. For me, I can never get them all wrinkle-free at the same time. :(
Is there a reason the sides of the borders are added first, then the top and bottom. OR can it be reversed if you have made a mistake cutting the borders and put the top and bottom on first ? OOPS 🤦♀️
love your videos. very informative for a beginner (that's me!!). Question: why did you cut the long border piece that you joined with another long border piece SO long, if you were going to cut off so much of it to make the 40.5" piece? Why was it necessary to have the original piece that long? Feel like I missed something.
Hello Leassia! You can cut your borders shorter if you'd like.
I have really enjoyed these. Any chance the ultimate beginner quilt kit will be restocked? Or should I just buy some fat quarters and tackle it myself?
Hello Bella! Yes, it will restocked soon.
So you are saying all the sashing pieces may be longer. My actual block are longer. What did I do wrong? I re measured my sashing to make sure I didn’t cut too small. Is it ok that I have to kinda press down and redistribute the blocks/ blocks sashing rows? These videos were so helpful!
Great video! You have that little piece of fabric you are calling a leader- what is that for?
Loving this tutorial series, just curious if after watching this twice, did I miss where it addresses how to square the project up, If its not....🤦🏼♀️
Good question! Important step
@@ginnyevans4937 did I miss something? I truly feel lost as a beginner.
Is there a separate tutorial about how to square up all the blocks? If one block is smaller than the other, what do you do?
Quick question...can you pin the border/sashing at the top and just sew straight down and trim off what is left at the bottom instead of “working in” the excess fabric?
Depending on how square you want the results and how much you diverged from the seam allowance, quilts aren't really something I experiment on.
What should I do if my blocks don’t exactly measure 12.5? Some are an 1/8 off on multiple sides.
Hello Nicole! You should check your seam allowance and make the adjustment there. If your block is 1/8" larger than the block you can trim down.
Can I ask a question? I take it you don't starch the sashing and border fabric before cutting?
I just joined but how do I find out more about this?
Can you tell me how to cut a straightening edge if you do not have a straight edge of frabric to start from?
Hello Joyce! You can use the selvedge as your straight line to work from. The part where the weave of the fabric differs from the woven selvedge. There are several videos and instructions from different people if you do a google search that can help visually.
What foot are you using? It looks like it has a guide on it? Also, do you use steam in your iron? I was taught to use a dry iron because the steam can cause your quilt pieces to shrink which could affect the accuracy of your piecing.
Hello Fran! She's using the 1/4" foot that comes with the EverSewn Sparrow 30 ua-cam.com/video/AzDnqgvvSF8/v-deo.html We use steam almost all the time, when pressing seams and getting out wrinkles. Steam will not be enough to shrink fabric like pre-washing does.
By the way, I learned so much watching this! Thank you!
What should I do if one of my blocks is 12x12 and not 12.5 x 12.5? I don’t want to redo the whole thing. I’m thinking of just adding a strip of fabric all around to make it 12.5 x 12.5.
Hello Mona! Yes, You could do that.
❤❤
I have ran into a problem. Not sure how to fix. I have added the fabric between the blocks but when I go to add the sashing the last row doesn't match up to the other rows. That row is slightly shorter. How do I fix? Thanks.
Hello Marilyn! We recommend taking the last row apart measure your blocks and make sure they are the correct size , measure your sashing and make sure it is the correct size. Re sew the row back together and pay close attention to the ¼” seam allowance
what kind of material is you back ground piece?
When sewing what are you using the little pink piece of cloth to do?
To take the first few stitches, that could be unevenly tensioned.
How muck of each color fabric is needed for the entire quilt??
Hello Charlotte! Here is a link to the fabric requirements: www.fatquartershop.com/media/wysiwyg/pdf/FQS-UBQ-FabReqAndColorSheets4.pdf
I need some clarification on sub-cutting the top/bottom border around the 1:00 point in the video. I have just sewn the strips onto the corners and pressed. I see that she says that we will sub-cut then the next slide just shows the long strip cut in two pieces( right before she cuts each piece down to 22.25"). Where do I make the cut in the long strip to make it into two pieces? Do I just fold it in half and cut? I want to be certain since I don't have any more of this fabric.
Hello Corey! Kimberly cut the long strip in half down the middle. Then she trimmed the two strips down to 2 - 2 ½” x 44 ½” strips.
@@FatQuarterShopTX This is exactly what I needed to know! Thank you so much for the help!!
What's the advantage of connecting the binding stripes on the bias instead just to connect?
Hello Daga! Connecting strips on the bias distributes the bulk of the seam around, so that seam doesn't puff out as much as a straight join would, and makes it more invisible
Is there a print out to the final finishes
yes, are there written instructions?
I've been using my dual feet foot on my Bernina for piecing. Will that affect how the feed dogs would normally take care of the "excess" fabric of the sashing? Like if I stitch with the sashing strip next to the feed dogs, along with using the dual feed foot, will that be a problem? Is it better to use a regular foot instead?
Hi Kathy, you should be just fine with using the dual feed foot! It really just helps pull the fabric through better when there are more layers so if anything it will help!
@@FatQuarterShopTX Thanks for the quick reply. I should begin attaching the sashing later today. What you said makes perfect sense. It's like the dual feed is just "pinching" the layers together. I wasn't sure if that would prevent the easing in of the extra fabric. :-)
The ruler is 24 inches ( or more? ).Couldn't she have used it to cut the 20 1/4 inch pieces instead of the mat lines?
Maybe she was showing that technique for people that do not have such a long ruler or for cases when your borders would be longer than your ruler 😁
I was thinking the same thing!
Question? On the sashing, why do you sew that fabric in that bunches up , seems it is causing puckers?
Hello Suzie Q! She is giving a common example of how sashing won't always be the same size as your quilt block, so you can see how to "ease in" the fabric so you don't have any puckers.
@@FatQuarterShopTX But why wouldn't you just cut the sashing to the right size?
@@hjaponi You can if you'd like to.
Hi there, I am really keen to make a quilt and would like to ask what size your quilt is based on. Many thanks. Val
Hello Valerie! The finished size of the Ultimate Beginner Quilt is 50.5″ square.
What is the finished size of this quilt
Hello Feliciah! We have the information needed linked in the description box underneath the title. The finished size of the quilt is 50.5"x 50.5" www.fatquartershop.com/media/wysiwyg/pdf/UBQ-Finishing-Pattern.pdf
I feel like maybe those two seams being by each maybe did bother her... lol :)
I am surprised how much your expensive iron leaks.
Put the vid on x2 speed
Youtu.be won't allow me any more than 2x speed.
