The studio LAIKA produced "Coraline," "The Boxtrolls," "ParaNorman," and "Kubo and the Two Strings" all using stop-motion animation. Another creepy doll animated film to watch (though it wasn’t made by LAIKA and really wasn't stop-motion animation) was the 2009 film "9." One of the producers was Tim Burton and the titular character was voiced by LOTR's Elijah Wood. All quite good films!

This film was based on a book by Neil Gaiman (American Gods, Good Omens), which may explain why the story seems so weird. This is honestly a great film though, delightfully charming and whimsical while also being surprisingly creepy for a kids' film. The stop-motion animation gives the film a really unique vibe, the voice acting in top-notch and the score is just marvellous (on that note, now you've seen the film and know how the story goes, give the Other Father's song a listen sometime and pay close attention to the lyrics - the hidden meaning is quite something to behold)

Some details you might have missed
    1. The ghost children's name for the Other Mother is "the Beldam." This is a reference to John Keats' 1819 poem "La Belle Dame sans Merci" literally the beautiful lady without mercy. The poem is about a knight who meets a "full beautiful faery's child" with "wild" eyes. She takes the knight "to her elfin grot" where she enchants him but he dreams of others "pale kings, and princes too" who warn him that she has him in her thrall. The M.O. of the Other Mother and the warnings of the ghost children to Coraline about what the Other Mother did to them are echoes of Keats' poem. In addition the English word "beldam" according to a glance at the dictionary will reveal that the word has two meanings "an old, ugly woman" also a hag or witch or "grandmother"
    2. The Other Mother's name "Beldam" is an archaic word meaning a malicious and ugly woman especially an old one a witch. It was once traditional on Halloween night for kids to dare each other to knock on the neighborhood Beldam's door an older woman living near them. In many stories a Beldam closely resembles a spider and lures children into her home with candy and treats only to trap them inside a cobweb and liquefy their innards with venom. In other variations the Beldam traps kids in her home and eats them. The 'Spider and the Fly' poem is similar to these stories in Coraline many of the happenings in the film are similar to these stories and that poem. Curiously the term 'Beldam' is believed to have stemmed from 'Belle Dame' (French for 'beautiful lady') from the fairy tale 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci' which again parallels the events of Coraline.
    3. During the meal with the Other Mother the "Welcome Home" cake features a double loop on the O in "home" but not in "welcome." According to Graphology a double loop on a lowercase O means the person who wrote it is lying. There is only one double loop meaning she is welcome but she is not home.
    4. When the Other Mother and Other Father attempt to persuade Coraline to sew buttons into her eyes the framed silhouettes on the wall represent the three ghost children.
    5. When Coraline goes to tell the Other Father that dinner is ready he sings her a song that at first listen seems cute and fun. But if you think about it carefully and listen to the lyrics he is warning her of what the Other Mother's motive is.
    6. After school uniform shopping when Coraline and her mother pull into the driveway of The Pink Palace you can see the front of their car is cracked from the accident that her mother references. This is the reason for her neck brace they also drive a Volkswagen beetle another reference to insects many examples of which are seen throughout the film.
    7. At the movie's end as the camera zooms out from everyone in the garden the landscaping resembles the "Other" Mother's true face instead of Coraline's like it was in the "other" world.
    8. When Coraline suggests to the Other Mother that they play hide and seek during her first visit the lightning outside of the window briefly takes the shape of the Other Mother's hand as do the tree branches on the downed log when Coraline first apologizes to the cat for calling him a "wuss puss."
    9. The strange object that Miss Spink and Miss Forcible give Coraline on her second visit to their apartment is an adder stone. According to European mythology adder stones have magical powers such as the ability to reveal witch disguises and traps by looking through the middle of the stone. Coraline does just this in the Other World to find the ghost children's real eyes.
    10. As the Other Mother becomes her true self we see more insect-like characteristics appear. The Other Mother is an expert at sewing her clothes become reminiscent of an insect's thorax and abdomen and in her final form as a spider the Other Mother hunts in her web containing the bug furniture that resemble previously caught prey by vibration just like a real spider.
    11. When Coraline finds the old well in the film's first act she discovers it's in a fairy ring she previously stepped in. In Western Europe stepping in fairy rings can be either a good or bad omen. Often they are seen as hazardous places such as a human getting trapped in the fairy realm for stepping on their 'sacred ground' Sometimes they can be linked with good fortune such as a person being allowed to interact with and enjoy the company of fairies for a night. In the film Coraline experiences both the good and bad consequences of stepping in the fairy ring. At first she's allowed to enjoy the pleasures of the Other World/"fairy world". But soon she's in danger of being trapped there forever unless she fixes both her mistakes and the mistakes of the children who came before her.
    12. The Other Mother is never seen eating at any of the dinner scenes the only thing she eats are the cocoa beetles this is most likely due to her wanting to "eat" Coraline's life.
    13. There are various little hints in the background of Coraline to imply which children had once lived in the Pink Palace and gone missing throughout its history. Most notably there was the introductory scene of the doll resembling the ghost girl who was Grandma Lovat's missing sister. Still there was also the "painfully boring" portrait Coraline discovers portraying an Edwardian-looking little boy eating an ice cream cone resembling one of the other ghosts and the silhouettes of the three ghost children are seen on the wall of the dining room in the Other World as well.
    14. Throughout the film the neighbors call Coraline "Caroline," much to her annoyance. By the end of the film rveryone gets her name right this could also symbolize Coraline's finally accepting the real world and the people in it.
    15. At the end of the movie the clouds moving away from the moon are in the shapes of the Other Mother's hands.
    16. When Miss Spink and Miss Forcible are arguing over whether Coraline's tea leaves are a "peculiar hand" or a "giraffe" technically they are both correct. The giraffe is a hint to where the beldam hides her parents because they are in the zoo snowglobe.
    17. During the first scene set in Coraline's bedroom you can see the photo frame containing the photo of her friends from back home on a stand in the shape of a Praying Mantis. This links to the Praying Mantis tractor that the 'Other' Father drives later in the film.
    18. Throughout the film the neighbors call Coraline "Caroline" much to her annoyance. By the end of the film everyone gets her name right. This could also symbolize Coraline's finally accepting the real world and the people in it.
    19. When the Other Mother proposes to sew the buttons in Coraline she can observe two horns on her head. These horns are highlighted to emphasize the dark magic in the Otherworld. The head with the horns is not in the kitchen in the real world.
    20. The Other Mother always ends the day by sitting beside Coraline's bed the same chair that Coraline's doll sits in each morning hinting that the doll is actually how the other mother has been spying on Coraline during the day.
    21. Mr. Bobinsky is wearing the liquidator medal which reads on the front "Participant in the clean-up campaign". The central detail of the medal is a drop of blood with three lines each representing the type of radiation Alpha (α), Beta (β) and Gamma (γ). The "ЧAЭC" indicates "Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant". This medal is a unique real life medal as it is the only medal in the world awarded for participation in a nuclear clean up. That might explain his odd behavior (eating raw beets etc) this would also imply that Mr. B must have immigrated to the United States from living in the Soviet Union that and his somewhat loose English.

The two creepiest things in this movie are the idea the Beldam had it been more patient or Coraline more gullible might have taken Coraline away and her parents never have known what happened to her, never knowing she was taken right in their own home and the dreams she told them about were real. The second that a lot of people miss is that although the Beldam removes most of it's disguise as Coraline's mother over time it never stops using her voice it just gets harsher. So imagine being a kid and realizing you are being trapped by a monster that always sounds like your mother.

I love stop-motion movies. The 1983 version of 'The Wind in the Willows', and the 'Cheburashka' cartoons use the same, if slightly more archaic technology, but are still so effective.
The 'Other Movie' was a villain that could freak out anyone - Teri Hatcher voiced her to perfection. I watched this movie for the first time whilst babysitting my neighbour's 10 y/o twins. They loved it - and they totally grasped the key messages of the film - be careful what you wish for!

Some easter eggs/details you may have missed:
1: The garden in the Other World looks just like Coraline. However, in the real world, the garden looks like the Other Mother.
2: The tunnel that Coraline uses to get to the Other World is actually a creature in itself. More specifically, it's the creature's oesophagus (throat pipe), and the world where the Other Mother is located is the creature's stomach. In the original book, it states that it was 'older by far than the Other Mother' and that Coraline 'could feel a breeze without a source' as she walked down the tunnel. This 'breeze ' is the creature breathing. However, the more Coraline goes into the tunnel, the more aware of her the creature becomes. At the beginning, it's in a state of hibernation. But near the end of the book, it's nearly fully awake. Essentially, the Other Mother is a parasitic life-form.
3: The inside of the well looks identical to how the inside of the tunnel looks when it's all dirty. This theory implies that the key that Coraline and Wybie threw down the well actually returned back to the Other Mother.

Actually, I think Thomas the Tank Engine traumatized me more than Coraline... 🤔

@@LadyDoomsinger I used to have VHS copies of so many episodes and I’d never let it get to the end because the music they used for one of the studio credits or something used to freak me out😂

I once convinced a friend to watch Coraline after watching it she called me on a video call and we started talking about the movie she said she was scared when she watched it and was glad it was just a movie then I hid my face under the desk and attached two big black buttons to my eyelids I raised my face to look at the camera and in all seriousness asked her if she was sure it was just a movie she looked at the screen and started yelling at me and told me not to do that again

Coraline didn’t defeat the Bedlam. The other Mother wins in this movie. Coraline is trapped in the Pink Palace Limbo.
