The story I read somewhere is that the writer of the book ,Neil Gaiman, was offered to make the book into a movie and he's like okay. Some producer was like "this movie seems too scary for kids" so they got a castmember's kid to watch it and the kid was like I wasn't scared. When I was younger, I sided with Coraline's perspective on her parents. Now that I'm older, I started to realize why her parents acted the way they did. The mom had a brace around her neck since she was in an accident, they were also moving while being on a tight deadline (being a writer is a tough job since you're not always guaranteed to get the next one) so that would definitely bring lots of stress. I may not agree with how they treated Coraline but I can also sympathize with their struggles.

I am obsessed with this movie ever since I was a kid. Everything I have gathered about the Beldam (other mother): She feeds on children's souls and with that can power her world. The first victim was a little pioneer girl, most likely one of the few children that survived the harshness of the journey through the Oregon trail and it didn't take much to subdue her, so probably a warm bed, fresh food, and a loving family. The second one was the boy who seems to be in a button up shirt and cleaner clothes. He was probably from around the late 1800's or early 1900's. From seeing as the pioneer girl is from over 150 years ago the Beldam doesn't need constant food. Probably a child every 50 years or so. Then came Mrs. Lovat's twin sister. She seemed to be from the early 50's. Seeing as this movie came out in 2009 she probably is getting more and more hungry. With that hunger comes the drain of her life source. And with the added removal of the Ghost eyes being a beacon of her power to show more "wonders" she becomes more and more unstable and hungry since even in the first scene with her you can see her acting impatient. When the beldam had the doll she probably spent so much energy keeping every form she has made and unique bodies such as the Other Father and Other Wybie since they did not become mindless drones at the end and were rather killed by the other mother. The beldam is a mysterious creature that has little to no information about. Now then when looking at thecreaturecodex.tumblr.com/post/156491822825/beldam you can see that a Beldam is a wooden creature that feeds on people's life forces by putting them through illusions until they fall fatal and forced to participate in "Games" or "contests" in which the victim being the loser would have to become apart of the Beldam's "family". They usually spend 50 years in hiding before striking again. Now seeing as they can be disguised as trees when resting means that the Beldam of this movie was probably a tree cut down and put as wood into making the Pink Palace as to why she is apart of the house. Most likely locked away after the first girl was taken. This explains a lot and probably through the first girl was she able to give her the doll just to feel safe and then was just changed to look like the victim over time.
This is such a great and scary film in its animation style you get that haunting atmosphere from just that I really do love these reactions and yes please do keep that animated genre option love me some animated films
for real! i love it so much. im so glad i got to watch it on dvd as a kid. definitely one of the 5 scariest movies for me. The music, animation and just everything about this film is so hauntingly good. I even downloaded the soundtrack and every song i listen to i know every scene to it xd

Animation, although can tie in with the writing to make whatever you're doing better than live action and vice versa (live action would work better than animation ) is separate from genre. Animation is a style in visuals, you can do literally any genre with animation. If it were a style in writing all animated movies would be very similar, but we don't, we've got fantasy, we got sci-fi, for the movie were commenting on, it's horror, we got films for kids, films for adults, films that are "for kids" even though older audiencesunderstanda lot more, and a heck ton more. There are a lot of theories around this movie. Like the other mother was always able to leave before coraline shut the door so that's how she knew everything about her. She was stalking her. Also, she has the ability to shapeshift so you can only imagine who she was pretending to be... Another theory is something Bryce noticed. The well is a secondary door and Coraline threw the key there, so the other mother would be able to get it
I don’t agree with the theory that the well is a secondary door because as you can see in the movie when the hand grabs Coraline it starts dragging her back to the house towards the original door instead of to the well. If the well was a door then it would’ve made more sense for the hand to start dragging her towards it since she was so close.
@@aubryellaotero1064 The hand was trying to get the key more than anything to the other mother, Coraline was just attached to it. Also if you look at the portal, the well looks the exact same except it's gray instead of blue.

The cat further support this theory by how he and other mother know each other, yet she's never been able to catch him despite "making" the world. as well as when the cat enters a log and come out of the other side, or the end where he disapears, implying that there are many more ways to access the other world, but the other mother only knows of the door
I think it was just the doll moving on its own spying on her, like we saw… the door was initially locked before Coraline unlocked it, and then her real mother locked it again so Coraline had to steal the key.
I follow that the Other World is inside something and the well is another way in. When Coraline opens the door the hallway gasps as it extends . I don't think the Other Mother can use the well door as she can the house door because the hand would have dragged her to it

When I was little I was TERRIFIED of the scene where she falls into the other mothers web it gave me too much anxiety as I imagined myself as coraline trying to get away 😬😅😅😅
You guys really opened up the floodgates putting animation in the poll. People will be relentless making animation requests now. Which I'm all for - Paranorman is my favorite stop-motion film (same production company as Coraline).
The other mother is essentially like an eldritch horror/witch/ evil spirit creature supposedly called "The beldam" that feeds on the souls of the kids. And the other father actually tried to (in secret) tell the truth about the other mother to Coraline in the lyrics of the song that he made for her. Saying things like: "This is a song I made up for Coraline", "she is so cute, she is a doll, she is Coraline" and "our eyes will be on Coraline". Which was a way to hint her about the fact that the other mother was spying on her through the eyes of the doll and that she was planning to sew buttons in Coraline´s eyes. Also, if you pay attention, you´ll notice that Wybie´s grandmother doesn´t allow kids in the residence because she knows that there´s something weird with that doll and with the residence that is causing the kids to dissapear, like what happened to her lost twin sister that was the first one to own the doll that the other mother uses to spy on the kid

It’s fantastically creepy and dark but I was surprisingly not scared the first time I watched it as a young tween. Watching people react to this movie is one of my favorite Oct/Halloween pastimes.
I saw this in theaters as a 12 year old and I had nightmares about dolls following me for weeks. Only now as an adult can I appreciate the stop motion and all the work that went into this. Also, I'm pretty sure this was vetted by a child incorrectly who was scared to say it wasn't for kids or something like that.

I've heard that the reason this movie is so terrifying for adults but not as much for kids is that kids see themselves as Coraline, going on an (albeit scary) adventure and overcoming the monster, whereas adults see her as a child in danger with no adult to help her through all these terrifying things she experiences when her parents aren't watching her.
There is a theory about coraline when: Coraline is actually the story of a little girl who can't accept the death of her parents. Near the beginning of the film, Coraline's mother makes a comment about how their plans had changed "since the accident' and points to her neck brace. Throughout the film, the parents have no interaction with anyone but their daughter, because they're not really there. Coraline actually lives with her two elderly neighbours who allow her free range to do as she pleases. And the groceries left on the counter have rotted because they've been there for months, since her parents' death.
Sorry to be that person, but this is just another one of those awful "Everyone is dead in such-and-such media" creepypasta theories. Also, Spink and Forcable mention that Coraline's parents interacted with them and were supposed to take them to a theatre before disappearing. So...there's a lot wrong with that "theory". Not to mention that theories like "Everyone is dead and protag is crazy the whole time" is a garbage way to disregard the creativity authors put into imaginary worlds. People who come up with those theories are the opposite of creative. I can't help but wonder if they're afraid of conceiving worlds where magic and the supernatural might exist, so they decide to retocon everything by making the stories take place in our "real" world. It's just a way to suck all the fun out of an otherwise fun, creative, and whimsical story.

I love coraline, I can connect to her in a way I can’t to other characters I love. I have the DVD and watch it as much as I can and the book is so different but amazing too. The animation style is incredible and adds a lot to it.
Something thats stuck with me that i thought was super cool was when shes stitting for dinner in her other home the cake says "Welcome Home", the o in welcome has one loop and the o in home has two. If a cursive O has two loops it signifies a lie. She really is welcome there, but its not her home.
The last time I saw this movie I was watching it on TV, late at night, in the dark, and I swear it seemed like every commercial was for those la la loopsy dolls with the button eyes. Needless to say it was creepy. And good marketing.

Animation is a medium, not a genre, as you can tell with this one the genre is more something like horror XD There's a huge range of genres, styles and mediums (claymation, puppet animation, 2D, CGI, etc) to explore in animation so I hope you check out more Also Coraline is puppet stop motion animation, not claymation, which partially explains why it's smoother since stop motion puppets are less pliable and probably better to work with than straight up clay figures, it's really cool to look at behind the scenes stuff for movies like this and see all the sets and puppets and inter-changeable faces they made Something really cool for Coraline specifically I saw is that they actually had someone who was able to knit at such an extremely small scale that they were actually able to hand-knit some of Coralines clothes, like the star-sweater or the gloves

Here's what freaks me out the most about Coraline. Mr. Bobinsky, Ms. Spink, and Ms. Forcible know what's behind the little door. They know something's up. And it's pretty evident that they had been there when Wybie's grandma's sister went missing. Only question is how do they know about the Beldam and the Other World and how long have they've known about em? I need answers! This is freaking nuts!
Well Bobinsky learned it from the mice that have been running around the house and he dismissed it after saying the mice say her name wrong, and Spink and Forcible had divining powers.

I saw this movie in 3d the first night I smoked weed. I had been on years of felony probation and the night after my "release party" we decided to have a chill night and smoke a blunt and watch a movie at a theater. A friend of mine is super into Tim Burton and refused to let us watch anything but this movie in 3d. To this day it was one of my top 5 theater experiences of all time and I'm so glad he didn't let us pick whatever generic action movie was out at the same time.
Fun fact: The song by the other father was actually a warning to Coraline to see if she gets the warning or still continues to go to this parallel universe until its too late to realize what she did. Watching this as a kid got me traumatized but now that I'm 18 I already understand life and the meaning behind the movie after watching it again I would never want something like this to happen to my family so to say I'm content with what I have as long as I have a roof over my head and to see my family smiling everyday.
Even though animation isn’t a genre. Just like how live action isn’t a genre. They both can depict any genre and tell any story. In fact, I believe animation to be much more liberal in the ways it can depict anything compared to live action. Animation is just so awesome ✨
Friendly remind, in the book, the Other Father part was so much more creepy, since it happened on the attic, in the dark.... I don't remember how the Other Father was, but I think is something with a pale body in a bizarre way.
It's the basement actually, and yeah, the beldam locks Coraline down there with him and orders him to kill her. He tries to resist, but gives in and chases her down. She outwits him and escapes. His body is described as pale, slimy, and bloated, with a terrible rotting smell coming from it. He's like a cross between a slug and a human corpse.
The item Coroline looks through when trying to find the kids "eyes" is a Hag Stone, some traditions hold that you look through the hole to see into other realms and see the truth in things as well.
I watched this movie so many times as a kid and even had the 2D glasses DVD set with the behind the scenes of how the movie was made. The first time I remember watching it, I was terrified and I'm pretty sure I didn't want to sleep without a night light on for a while but it became my favorite movie somehow. I watched a lot of those stop animation movies. It was so popular back then, it really was a big part of my childhood!

Fun Coraline Facts: -Wybie was entirely created for the movie to fill scenes that would've felt too empty or slow directly adapted from the book. -Coraline, the book, was written by Niel Gaiman as his first attempt at a childrens story. He used his niece as a test audience, and the book ended up so scary because even though she was scared, she wanted to know what would happen next, so she lied about it not being too scary. -Spink and Forcible are indeed an elderly lesbian couple and not sisters. It's more plainly stated in the book, but still not directly said. Neil Gaiman has confirmed this himself. -Mr. Bobinski was very different in the book, not showing his face at all, only being heard from his upstairs door, though he was still a former circus member. -Mud does really work on poison oak, it's very good.
I can tell you never read the book actually, because literally none of those book "facts" are true. Coraline was not Neil Gaiman's first attempt at a children's story. He was already a very accomplished author with multiple books under his belt, including children's stories that came out over half a decade prior to him writing Coraline. He didn't use a "test audience" of any kind for Coraline. He wrote the book for his daughters, who both love scary stories. He originally started it for his eldest daughter, but by the time he finished it she was too old for kids books, so he finished it for his youngest daughter. This fact is mentioned right in the acknowledgements section of the book. Spink and Forcible's relationship is not even remotely explored or hinted at in the book. They are very minor characters with limited interactions with Coraline. Most of their interactions either focus on Coraline's life, or limited revealings of the women's past. The only concrete knowledge we really get about them is that they are ex actresses, and that Ms. Spink has a niece that they go visit from time to time. In the book, Bobinski is known simply as "Mr. Bobo", though his name isn't revealed until the final chapter. He still has a couple of interactions with Coraline though, including the one where he relays the mice's message not to go through the strange door. They have this conversation face to face, and Coraline even makes note of his large mustache. You shouldn't believe everything you read online without fact checking.

my child was so traumatised by this film that she asked me to throw the DVD away and watched as I put it in the bin. I forget how old she was- maybe 9- but I felt terrible because I thought it was a benign cartoon she'd like! I think she related it to something possibly happening to me (I'm her only family)

this movie is my safe place, my comfort and i always feel relaxed watching this movie, same with tim burton movies, id always get in bed, put on my fav tim burton movie in the dvd player and drift off to sleep .. good times.

I don’t know if many people remember but when Coraline first came out in 2009 it came out in 3D and it was next to the horror section in blockbuster. So the first time I watched Coraline I was 6 and I watched it in 3D and in the dark.
I was 9 when this movie came out and I remember finding it at family video and renting it. Both me and my dad had no idea what it was about or how scary it was for kids. God I remember having nightmares for days and my mom was so pissed at my dad for letting me pick it 😂😂

I have always loved the claymation art style and coralline is such a cool story. I just read the book for the first time recently and it made me fall in love with the story even more
This was my favorite movie as a kid, I think for like first or second grade I dressed up as Coraline for halloween. Every time I got to give my input for what movie we would watch I would always suggest it (I was like 6 or 7 keep in mind) but my younger sibling (~3 year age gap) was TERRIFIED of the movie and so I never got to watch it. Still one of my favorites to this day.

When I was younger, I sided with Coraline's perspective on her parents. Now that I'm older, I started to realize why her parents acted the way they did. The mom had a brace around her neck since she was in an accident, they were also moving while being on a tight deadline (being a writer is a tough job since you're not always guaranteed to get the next one) so that would definitely bring lots of stress. I may not agree with how they treated Coraline but I can also sympathize with their struggles.
They also very clearly struggled with money until the end there, so that definitely explains why the mom didn't want to buy the expensive gloves for Coraline or why the fridge was practically empty

I am obsessed with this movie ever since I was a kid.
Everything I have gathered about the Beldam (other mother): She feeds on children's souls and with that can power her world. The first victim was a little pioneer girl, most likely one of the few children that survived the harshness of the journey through the Oregon trail and it didn't take much to subdue her, so probably a warm bed, fresh food, and a loving family. The second one was the boy who seems to be in a button up shirt and cleaner clothes. He was probably from around the late 1800's or early 1900's. From seeing as the pioneer girl is from over 150 years ago the Beldam doesn't need constant food. Probably a child every 50 years or so. Then came Mrs. Lovat's twin sister. She seemed to be from the early 50's. Seeing as this movie came out in 2009 she probably is getting more and more hungry. With that hunger comes the drain of her life source. And with the added removal of the Ghost eyes being a beacon of her power to show more "wonders" she becomes more and more unstable and hungry since even in the first scene with her you can see her acting impatient. When the beldam had the doll she probably spent so much energy keeping every form she has made and unique bodies such as the Other Father and Other Wybie since they did not become mindless drones at the end and were rather killed by the other mother. The beldam is a mysterious creature that has little to no information about. Now then when looking at thecreaturecodex.tumblr.com/post/156491822825/beldam you can see that a Beldam is a wooden creature that feeds on people's life forces by putting them through illusions until they fall fatal and forced to participate in "Games" or "contests" in which the victim being the loser would have to become apart of the Beldam's "family". They usually spend 50 years in hiding before striking again. Now seeing as they can be disguised as trees when resting means that the Beldam of this movie was probably a tree cut down and put as wood into making the Pink Palace as to why she is apart of the house. Most likely locked away after the first girl was taken. This explains a lot and probably through the first girl was she able to give her the doll just to feel safe and then was just changed to look like the victim over time.

Animation, although can tie in with the writing to make whatever you're doing better than live action and vice versa (live action would work better than animation ) is separate from genre. Animation is a style in visuals, you can do literally any genre with animation. If it were a style in writing all animated movies would be very similar, but we don't, we've got fantasy, we got sci-fi, for the movie were commenting on, it's horror, we got films for kids, films for adults, films that are "for kids" even though older audiencesunderstanda lot more, and a heck ton more. Another theory is something Bryce noticed. The well is a secondary door and Coraline threw the key there, so the other mother would be able to get it
I don’t agree with the theory that the well is a secondary door because as you can see in the movie when the hand grabs Coraline it starts dragging her back to the house towards the original door instead of to the well. If the well was a door then it would’ve made more sense for the hand to start dragging her towards it since she was so close.

The cat further support this theory by how he and other mother know each other, yet she's never been able to catch him despite "making" the world. as well as when the cat enters a log and come out of the other side, or the end where he disapears, implying that there are many more ways to access the other world, but the other mother only knows of the door
I think it was just the doll moving on its own spying on her, like we saw… the door was initially locked before Coraline unlocked it, and then her real mother locked it again so Coraline had to steal the key.
I follow that the Other World is inside something and the well is another way in. When Coraline opens the door the hallway gasps as it extends . I don't think the Other Mother can use the well door as she can the house door because the hand would have dragged her to it

The other mother is essentially like an eldritch horror/witch/ evil spirit creature supposedly called "The beldam" that feeds on the souls of the kids.
And the other father actually tried to (in secret) tell the truth about the other mother to Coraline in the lyrics of the song that he made for her. Saying things like: "This is a song I made up for Coraline", "she is so cute, she is a doll, she is Coraline" and "our eyes will be on Coraline". Which was a way to hint her about the fact that the other mother was spying on her through the eyes of the doll and that she was planning to sew buttons in Coraline´s eyes.
Also, if you pay attention, you´ll notice that Wybie´s grandmother doesn´t allow kids in the residence because she knows that there´s something weird with that doll and with the residence that is causing the kids to dissapear, like what happened to her lost twin sister that was the first one to own the doll that the other mother uses to spy on the kid

It’s fantastically creepy and dark but I was surprisingly not scared the first time I watched it as a young tween. Watching people react to this movie is one of my favorite Oct/Halloween pastimes.
I read the book as a kid and the book was even more scary. But despite how scary it was I still loved it lol
I saw this in theaters as a 12 year old and I had nightmares about dolls following me for weeks. Only now as an adult can I appreciate the stop motion and all the work that went into this. Also, I'm pretty sure this was vetted by a child incorrectly who was scared to say it wasn't for kids or something like that.
Neil Gaiman's editor said the book was too scary for kids, but Neil convinced her to read it to her daughter and see if it really was too scary. Her daughter said it was fine so it was published. Years later, the daughter admitted she had been terrified but wanted to know what happened next so she said she wasn’t scared.
I've heard that the reason this movie is so terrifying for adults but not as much for kids is that kids see themselves as Coraline, going on an (albeit scary) adventure and overcoming the monster, whereas adults see her as a child in danger with no adult to help her through all these terrifying things she experiences when her parents aren't watching her.
There is a theory about coraline when: Coraline is actually the story of a little girl who can't accept the death of her parents. Near the beginning of the film, Coraline's mother makes a comment about how their plans had changed "since the accident' and points to her neck brace. Throughout the film, the parents have no interaction with anyone but their daughter, because they're not really there. Coraline actually lives with her two elderly neighbours who allow her free range to do as she pleases. And the groceries left on the counter have rotted because they've been there for months, since her parents' death.

Sorry to be that person, but this is just another one of those awful "Everyone is dead in such-and-such media" creepypasta theories. Also, Spink and Forcable mention that Coraline's parents interacted with them and were supposed to take them to a theatre before disappearing. So...there's a lot wrong with that "theory".
Not to mention that theories like "Everyone is dead and protag is crazy the whole time" is a garbage way to disregard the creativity authors put into imaginary worlds. People who come up with those theories are the opposite of creative. I can't help but wonder if they're afraid of conceiving worlds where magic and the supernatural might exist, so they decide to retocon everything by making the stories take place in our "real" world. It's just a way to suck all the fun out of an otherwise fun, creative, and whimsical story.
I love the soundtrack to this film it’s so unique sounding to me, and as Halloween season fan this is an annual classic :)

I love coraline, I can connect to her in a way I can’t to other characters I love. I have the DVD and watch it as much as I can and the book is so different but amazing too. The animation style is incredible and adds a lot to it.
Something thats stuck with me that i thought was super cool was when shes stitting for dinner in her other home the cake says "Welcome Home", the o in welcome has one loop and the o in home has two. If a cursive O has two loops it signifies a lie. She really is welcome there, but its not her home.

The last time I saw this movie I was watching it on TV, late at night, in the dark, and I swear it seemed like every commercial was for those la la loopsy dolls with the button eyes. Needless to say it was creepy. And good marketing.

As you can see in the comments, there is ALOT to talk about for Coraline. This is my absolute favourite stop motion movie. The lore around this movie and the book are amazing; there are still theories for this story today! Amazing reaction
Animation is a medium, not a genre, as you can tell with this one the genre is more something like horror XD
There's a huge range of genres, styles and mediums (claymation, puppet animation, 2D, CGI, etc) to explore in animation so I hope you check out more
Also Coraline is puppet stop motion animation, not claymation, which partially explains why it's smoother since stop motion puppets are less pliable and probably better to work with than straight up clay figures, it's really cool to look at behind the scenes stuff for movies like this and see all the sets and puppets and inter-changeable faces they made
Something really cool for Coraline specifically I saw is that they actually had someone who was able to knit at such an extremely small scale that they were actually able to hand-knit some of Coralines clothes, like the star-sweater or the gloves
This animation still should be treated as a legit form of entertainment

Here's what freaks me out the most about Coraline. Mr. Bobinsky, Ms. Spink, and Ms. Forcible know what's behind the little door. They know something's up. And it's pretty evident that they had been there when Wybie's grandma's sister went missing. Only question is how do they know about the Beldam and the Other World and how long have they've known about em? I need answers! This is freaking nuts!
Well Bobinsky learned it from the mice that have been running around the house and he dismissed it after saying the mice say her name wrong, and Spink and Forcible had divining powers.

I saw this movie in 3d the first night I smoked weed. I had been on years of felony probation and the night after my "release party" we decided to have a chill night and smoke a blunt and watch a movie at a theater. A friend of mine is super into Tim Burton and refused to let us watch anything but this movie in 3d. To this day it was one of my top 5 theater experiences of all time and I'm so glad he didn't let us pick whatever generic action movie was out at the same time.
Fun fact: The song by the other father was actually a warning to Coraline to see if she gets the warning or still continues to go to this parallel universe until its too late to realize what she did. Watching this as a kid got me traumatized but now that I'm 18 I already understand life and the meaning behind the movie after watching it again I would never want something like this to happen to my family so to say I'm content with what I have as long as I have a roof over my head and to see my family smiling everyday.
Even though animation isn’t a genre. Just like how live action isn’t a genre. They both can depict any genre and tell any story. In fact, I believe animation to be much more liberal in the ways it can depict anything compared to live action. Animation is just so awesome ✨

It's the basement actually, and yeah, the beldam locks Coraline down there with him and orders him to kill her. He tries to resist, but gives in and chases her down. She outwits him and escapes. His body is described as pale, slimy, and bloated, with a terrible rotting smell coming from it. He's like a cross between a slug and a human corpse.

I watched this movie so many times as a kid and even had the 2D glasses DVD set with the behind the scenes of how the movie was made. The first time I remember watching it, I was terrified and I'm pretty sure I didn't want to sleep without a night light on for a while but it became my favorite movie somehow. I watched a lot of those stop animation movies. It was so popular back then, it really was a big part of my childhood!
Fun fact: in the book, Coraline is British cuz the author, Neil Gaiman, is British. And so is everyone else in the story. (Including the ghost kids)
I remember watching this movie as a kid. It’s one my clearest and earliest memories. I think I was 6 or so. We were on vacation in New Jersey, and rented it and watched it in the hotel room. One of the most disturbing events of my young life. Still a fantastic movie though

Fun Coraline Facts:
-Wybie was entirely created for the movie to fill scenes that would've felt too empty or slow directly adapted from the book.
-Coraline, the book, was written by Niel Gaiman as his first attempt at a childrens story. He used his niece as a test audience, and the book ended up so scary because even though she was scared, she wanted to know what would happen next, so she lied about it not being too scary.
-Spink and Forcible are indeed an elderly lesbian couple and not sisters. It's more plainly stated in the book, but still not directly said. Neil Gaiman has confirmed this himself.
-Mr. Bobinski was very different in the book, not showing his face at all, only being heard from his upstairs door, though he was still a former circus member.
-Mud does really work on poison oak, it's very good.
I can tell you never read the book actually, because literally none of those book "facts" are true.
Coraline was not Neil Gaiman's first attempt at a children's story. He was already a very accomplished author with multiple books under his belt, including children's stories that came out over half a decade prior to him writing Coraline. He didn't use a "test audience" of any kind for Coraline. He wrote the book for his daughters, who both love scary stories. He originally started it for his eldest daughter, but by the time he finished it she was too old for kids books, so he finished it for his youngest daughter. This fact is mentioned right in the acknowledgements section of the book.
Spink and Forcible's relationship is not even remotely explored or hinted at in the book. They are very minor characters with limited interactions with Coraline. Most of their interactions either focus on Coraline's life, or limited revealings of the women's past. The only concrete knowledge we really get about them is that they are ex actresses, and that Ms. Spink has a niece that they go visit from time to time.
In the book, Bobinski is known simply as "Mr. Bobo", though his name isn't revealed until the final chapter. He still has a couple of interactions with Coraline though, including the one where he relays the mice's message not to go through the strange door. They have this conversation face to face, and Coraline even makes note of his large mustache.

This was my favorite movie as a kid, I think for like first or second grade I dressed up as Coraline for halloween.
Every time I got to give my input for what movie we would watch I would always suggest it (I was like 6 or 7 keep in mind) but my younger sibling (~3 year age gap) was TERRIFIED of the movie and so I never got to watch it. Still one of my favorites to this day.
this is my childhood movie, everyone always go for disney classics, not me! i saw this in theaters when it first came out in 3D! after that i was hooked ! i rented the movie from family video and watched over and over again lmao 😊

my daughter was told to read this in third grade😮 but she was to afraid to read it so I had to write a note to her teacher saying if they could read it in class instead. she was afraid of being bullied because she was afraid so i told him to be decreate but funny enough many parents wrote the same to the teacher so she was not the only scared kid. i read a chapter for her and i was like omg how can this be a children's book it was way to scary

I love this film so much til this day!!! This never scared me & it came out when I was 11. I did read the book after seeing the movie multiple times & it is creepier in the book. Apparently the daughter of the author lied to him saying the book wasn't scary when in reality it was. I have a Diamond edition Funko Pop of her in my room
2:52 It's not claymation because it isn't made of clay. The characters are puppets, and the set-design is made of non-clay props. It's just stop-motion.
