  • Nerve flossing for carpal tunnel is often one of the most effective exercises at relieving pain in the hand and wrist that is usually caused by median nerve entrapment or irritation. One way to address the median nerve issues is by consistently doing median nerve flossing and median nerve gliding to "free up" the median nerve and ultimately relieve the median nerve pain. The median nerve provides sensory innervation for the anterior palm region of the hand and the middle finger as well as part of the surrounding fingers, that's why carpal tunnel causes tingling, burning, numbness, and pins and needles sensations in these areas.
Your carpal tunnel is a semicircular area in the anterior wrist that is covered by a ligament. This region allows tendons, nerves, and blood vessels to pass through. However, in those with carpal tunnel syndrome, the space can diminish due to poor wrist positioning and overuse activities like typing, using a computer mouse, or simply anything that compresses the area. This compression causes strange sensations in the hand due to poor nerve transmission and types of nerve degeneration which can ultimately present in hand weakness as it progresses.
The goal of surgery is typically to "open up" the carpal tunnel region and relieve pressure and inflammation surrounding the median nerve. I typically advise surgery as a last resort, and advise my patients to try a course of conservative care first. Part of conservative care includes median nerve flossing and glides for carpal tunnel, which I demonstrate in the first two exercises of this video. Additionally, stretching to associated areas can help create more flexibility in other areas that could limit the path of the median nerve fibers which originate in nerve roots of the cervical spine.
If you're suffering form carpal tunnel syndrome or other median nerve problems, it may be helpful to learn these FIVE Carpal Tunnel Stretches! I’ll teach you 2 MEDIAN NERVE STRETCHES and 3 MUSCLE STRETCHES to free up the median nerve and get carpal tunnel relief. There are plenty of options to relieve carpal tunnel without surgery, shots, or medications and carpal tunnel stretches and exercises are great to try.

The first stretch was the best version of this movement I've found for myself, personally, so far. I don't actually have carpel tunnel, but I've recently had really strange median nerve issues when weightlifting, and I'm trying to figure it out as best I can. Unfortunately, it's a seemingly unique problem that is triggered in a very specific way. Normally that would be helpful in terms of figuring out what's going on exactly, but I can't seem to find resources that describe what's going on in particular, or even others describing the same issue (outside of one person who had no responses, alas)!
In any case, this was extremely helpful. Thank you!

No problem! It can really help free up the median nerve when it's irritated from conditions like cervical radiculopathy, thoracic outlet syndrome, or carpal tunnel. Best of luck in your recovery!
