Fiddler is actually one of the most popular plays in Japan. And the story itsself is so Japanese - a Japanese audience can identify with a story about the breakdown of tradition and the conflict between generations. Some things transcend culture.
This is a rehearsal presented to the press held on Dec. 14, 2005 in Tokyo. The actor who plays Tevye is Mr. Masachika ICHIMURA, famous Japanese actor (and husband of beautiful actress Ryoko SHINOHARA).
Brilliant! THIS is why I surf UA-cam...this is the kind of stuff we love to find. Pure entertainment (we know the play, in English, very well). Thanks for posting!
even though i don't understand japanese i knew what was generally going on, and thoroughly enjoyed this. i love the japanese gestures and movements--they gave a nice touch to the scene
This gets me so excited for my school's production of Fiddler. I'm Tevye, and I can only hope I can match the passion that these actors show. Wish me a broken limb or two!
There exist Japanese and all other types of Jews here on this planet. Bravo for this wonderful performance of unbridled respect, and obvious admiration for Jewish culture and tradition.
I loved it!!! Please did you tape any more of this Japanese version of Fiddler on The Roof? Oh how I would love to see it all!:) Todah Rabah (Thank you very much) for putting it on UA-cam!:)
..i am in fiddler on the roof right now for a theater in vallejo and this video is the coolest thing i ever seen portrayed for fiddler. they have great choreography man i love this!!
Oy Vay!! It's a great play. I have watched the play twice, the first time was on Broadway with Zero Mostel as Tevye. It's nice to see and interesting to watch some of it in Japanese.
The choreography makes it. Since not much is going to change with any character casting, the big thing, I'd suppose, would be the visual presentation. Very enjoyable!
Fiddler is not based on a single story. It is from a collection of stories by Sholom Aleichem (sp?) about Tevya the Dairyman. They were written over years. I think this is a charming video. The stories are timeless the themes are culturally transferrable and the characters are so easy to identify with.
IT MAY BE FULL REHERARSAL. PROTAGONIST'S NAME IS MASACHIKA ICHIKAWA,FAMOUS ACTOR IN JAPAN. (AND HIS WIFE IS MORE FAMOUS) AND THERE ARE SOME FAMOUS ACTORS AND ACTRESSESS.
Darn!! My school did this play too. We're from Hong Kong, China. We should've sung it in Cantonese then. xP But no, we kept it in English....they sing better than we do though xP
@Shipuh Yep, a major event in the show involves the fact that the men and women are not allowed to touch and certainly not dance together. They should have taken that into account but they did a pretty good job otherwise. (Not sure about some of those costumes either.)
I'm pretty sure that's how it is. From the costume and music you can tell exactly what's going on. In fact, I think this is more the Broadway version than the theatrical, but duh. The beggar doesn't have a routine in the movie.
The choice is really the choice of the musician. Playing the violin I prefer violinist even though I do both styles frequently; it sounds more classy. :D
The Shanghai ghetto was not exactly "the Garden of Eden" but it is true that they never allowed the Germans to build an extermination camp in nearbye Pudong as they intended to
Once you get past how hilarious this culture clash is, it's actually pretty heart-warming to know this is being put on in Japan, especially since they were part of the Axis and Nazism is still kind of glorified in punky, goth subculture there.

My understanding was that many of the Japanese people who saw this production could not believe it was not written about them. Good art is universal.

Seriously, the actor playing Tevye is obviously classically trained- superb performance! ^.^ Kudos to the whole troupe!
Even though the recording is poor, the expressions and roleplay are amazing. Worth replaying!
It's cool to see a musical reach across the globe. They did a good job with it.
Brilliant! THIS is why I surf UA-cam...this is the kind of stuff we love to find. Pure entertainment (we know the play, in English, very well). Thanks for posting!
I hear that Japan holds this in high regard, especially the elders. I guess the idea of a slowly dying tradition rings home for them.
"Shikitari" means "tradition","custom","convention" and so on.
Yes, indeed. I bought my husband the vinyl record for his birthday this year!
"Sore waaaaaaaaaaa. Musume!"
That was entertaining.
its so odd to see such a mixture of two cultures like this...this is pretty cool!
Fiddler is my favorite play. Japanese is my favorite language. This. Is. Awesome.
A good story is timeless, no matter what language it's performed in........
the japanese language doesn't really lend itself that well to musicals, but this was awesome. good translation, good performance
A fascinating cross-cultural presentation! 😍
This is perhaps the most awsome thing to ever grace the screens of UA-cam!
I think this is my 30th time watching
My brain may never recover from this awesomeness :o
I love it!! There is something about 'TRADITION" that would speak to the Japanese Shinto Ancestor Worshipping SOUL. Beautiful !!
even though i don't understand japanese i knew what was generally going on, and thoroughly enjoyed this. i love the japanese gestures and movements--they gave a nice touch to the scene
wow that was the most enjoyable thing to watch EVER!
This musical is amazing in any language. ^^

I'm SO Glad This Existed at one point!

Really amazing to look at!!! It is so good!!!
I am mexican and as my mother language is spanish, I love to ear (and watch) the hits of West End and Broadway in different languages of english.
Wow...I must really like this song because it even sounds good in Japanese.
Actually, there have been Japanese productions of Fiddler on the Roof before, and the movie also did pretty well in Japan.
Japanese have great voices, strong and dominating.
This is actually pretty good. Hope that they had a successful showing. Tradition!Tradition!Tradition!
what a little gem of a video.
This made my day. They're really good!
wow ... i'm in a regional production of this! this is hilarious!
This gets me so excited for my school's production of Fiddler. I'm Tevye, and I can only hope I can match the passion that these actors show. Wish me a broken limb or two!
I expected this to make me laugh and instead it actually made me weepy.
Very nice !
I don't understand but the voices are great !
There exist Japanese and all other types of Jews here on this planet. Bravo for this wonderful performance of unbridled respect, and obvious admiration for Jewish culture and tradition.
I love it. Great!
THIS IS SOOOO ADORABLE!
WoW! In Japan made great musicals, they have an awesome singing technic.
This is great. I am Tevye now. Luvin' the choreo...

I loved it!!! Please did you tape any more of this Japanese version of Fiddler on The Roof?
Oh how I would love to see it all!:) Todah Rabah (Thank you very much) for putting it on UA-cam!:)

Lol they're saying "Sore wa, Papa, shikari!" "This is, Papa, Tradition!"
I love you so much for this.
Oy Vay!! It's a great play. I have watched the play twice, the first time was on Broadway with Zero Mostel as Tevye. It's nice to see and interesting to watch some of it in Japanese.
THIS IS DIFFERENT...BRAVO!!!
Brilliant! Bravo! TY.
hahaha i love the blessing for the tsar in this.
oh goodness...I love it.
Awesome choreography!
Oh, god, that's brilliant.
Gledao sam u SNP-u ovu predstavu, lepo zvuči na srpskom, ali ovako nešto me potpuno obara sa nogu. Interesantno!
Wow, this is so different in Japanese. haha i like it
this is cool and strange. I never would have thought that foreign speakers would even want to do it. But then again, it is a great story. Love this!
Japan is full of tradition too.
this is ridiculous...i love them alll......
and i love that i can understand parts of what they're saying...
This is just wonderful.
If that Tevye is who I think he is (Masachika Ichimura), than this is not a low budget production, it's just a rehearsal.
GENIAAAAL!!!! so great!
this is wonderful! thankyou for sharing this
This is fantastic. :D
Ahh ^--^ How impressive. This is amazing
No, they are professionals, because the main character in this clip (I think he's playing the role of fiddler) is a famous actor in Japan.
this is awesome!
This is superb! Multicultural. I love this video and thank you very much!
The choreography makes it. Since not much is going to change with any character casting, the big thing, I'd suppose, would be the visual presentation. Very enjoyable!
It's weird hearing it in Japanese, but this is actually pretty awesome.
Very fun and interesting... they did a very good job!
this is cool!! it sounds like Anime and looks like fiddler on the roof but with japanese people!!!
LOL so freakn cool i wanna go see this!

It's really something else, amazing,to hear them singing it in Japanese, lol, but well done
great!I love Fiddler on the roof and Japanese version is nice :)
1:44 through 1:52 is my favorite part.
IT MAY BE FULL REHERARSAL.

shikitari: a customs or a practices handed down generation after generation.
This video is quite relevant to my interests...
@Shipuh Yep, a major event in the show involves the fact that the men and women are not allowed to touch and certainly not dance together. They should have taken that into account but they did a pretty good job otherwise. (Not sure about some of those costumes either.)

I think that its Marvelous!!!!!
