Grew to a Sony ES receiver, 2 12"s in 5 gallon buckets driven by a 150 watt a side soundstream amp, 8" woofers in the 6x9 spots, nice soft dome tweeters with 75 a side Alphasonic amp, up front Polk 5 inch package with the separate mid/tweeter module on the pillars and another Alphasonic 50 in the glove box. It sounded excellent and could thump if the music called for it. Old stuff now but that's when I was building it up as deals and ideas came up. Welcome to the 2006/7 CLS world. I Have spent a year fixing faults on mine and they just keep on coming. If I did not love the look of this car so much I would have probably set it on fire by now. I Have put in more money in parts than I paid for it, but keep hoping that it will be sorted after every fault that I had to repair. Mine is the CLS 550 naturally aspirated M273 engine.
You are the perfect guy for this car… it just clicks off all of your OCD tendencies.. watching you for years it’s always interesting to see what gets you geeking out and it’s always audio and wiring.
That's nice, and I realize that you are into 'Fancy' like that. However, my dad was a mechanic for 50+ years and his philosophy was "The more accessories on a car the more there is to break". But the cars back then were considered Fancy if they had power windows.
Just grab a new battery for it along with the tires, I know how temperamental my '01 VW Passat gets when the battery starts getting low so I'm sure being another German car it's probably just the lower voltage of an old battery.
As a w211 CDI owner (I’d say its a tie with the 55 as the best the engines these cars ever got, followed by the 6.2 N/A monster) which this car essentially is with a different body and interior, all this stuff is pretty minor really. My Drive Dynamic seats have never worked properly and randomly come on and off as they see fit, I don’t care enough to mess with it. Though my heating and cooling is flawless which once you get the control panel sorted out should be fine also. SBC has a 25 year no charge recall/warranty mine was just replaced. Be extremely careful with this if it’s already throwing faults… on my car one day I lost half my braking capability and what little was left pulled my vehicle into the adjacent lane at a stop light 😮. If it’s rust free, the engine and trans work great, the suspension isn’t trashed and you got it for the typical JR deal… you did fine. Just for the love of God don’t sell it to Alex. Dude gets everyone else’s projects for a steal then spends entire videos showing us how lucky he is it all worked out with “this one little fix” which honestly just got old after the 200th time. If he’ll collab with you to get the issues sorted, that’s different of course. But I think you can nail a lot of it yourself.
My philosophy is if it's a coupe it has a rear wiper. One of the things I hate about Mercs, is the parking brake system. They could have just used a single handbrake lever, but no, they have another pedal which you've got to press, then to release you pull a lever under then dash. Apparently they are switching to an electric system, looking forward to seeing one of them, and how it works.
Man I love the CLS Benz. The body style when it came out was so friggin awesome looking. I would love to have one if I won the lottery or something, since that would be the only way to afford the maintenance.
I have one, but I do all my maintenance. It's actually pretty easy to work on! Only downside I've found is how low the engine sits, kills your spine hunching over the engine. But I've been from Maryland to Missouri and back in it, and many thousands of miles more. Been fantastic, and no more expensive than my Tahoe to repair. Great car!
John, that ABS pump was probably replaced under warranty or recall, since the brake-by-wire issues made Mercedes offer a 25 year warranty to save face.
Not sure if you’ve left Nashville already, but it might be wise to try to hit up a junkyard and find a trashed out wheel with a good tire on it that will fit. Just in case.
Nice..... That's going to be sweet after you get the bugs worked out of it. While you are waiting for two days to get your new tires put on, maybe you can get a few more speakers and amps installed 😂 I would have liked to hear that system when it was new. Fortunately they put adjustments in for the subs because usually the bass in systems with that many speakers over powers everything, and they sound very unnatural and crappy.

If my memory isn't failing me, the number of doors on a car does not define a coupe or a sedan. A coupe does not have a window frame, so when the windows go down only the door is left. A sedan on the other hand has a frame surrounding the window and is still present when the window goes down. The 58 Impala was a two door sport coupe and the 58 Chevy BelAir and DelRay were offered as a two door sport sedans.
you missed out. it's easy to overlook, but the cls55 amg handles phenomenally well in the game. It's one of the cars that'll give you a huge gap just because it goes through turns really well. I've used it on several playthroughs, and it surprises me every time.
I know you are going to do your own thing, but fixing things is why I watch your channel. The car tours are just not my jam. I will continue to watch all of your fixing content!
If anyone can fix all the electrical issues, it's JR. In the spring of '89 I purchased an '84 Chrysler Laser Turbo. I went skooting onto an onramp that I wasn't super familiar with from the south. Part way thru there was a dogleg in the turn that I didn't know about. Oh oh. I was going too fast to make the dogleg, so I decided to just put 2 wheels off and come back onto the pavement after the dogleg. Good plan except there was a huge hole that I couldn't avoid. Made a nasty sound when I hit it. Slowed down to see if there were any issues. None appeared so I went home. Got home and saw a huge bulge in the inside sidewall of the tire. I was leaving in a few days for a Cubs game. Couldn't drive with that tire. Called around and found a shop that had the 1 BFG I needed. Drop the car off and wait for the swap. Guy comes into the waiting room and asks why I'm replacing the tire - it had plenty of tread on it. I said go look at the inside shoulder. He comes back and asks what I hit. I told him. He said for the tire to be in that shape, the tread had to be to the rim and the bead was broken. He replaced the tire. I made it out and back from Chicago. Harry Carray read my hello on TV. And the Cubs beat the hated Cards. It was a good weekend.
I had a similar experience with one in apopka FL left that one there because the shop was shady and obviously lied about the condition of the cls55 . Went to Gainesville GA where I bought mine.
Since he showed it off and talked about for a couple of months, I don't think asking about it's progress was offensive or out of order. You seem to desire to be his protector and mouthpiece, will you be tucking him safely into bed too?
Is that the engine that has the issue with an O-ring going bad in the oil-collector in the sump making it suck in air instead of oil? Cheap and easy fix to prevent the motor blowing up.
It is not a cheap or easy fix. It requires removing the engine or subframe. You then have to remove the oil pan, upper oil pan frame, then you can remove the oil pump
@@bigqwertycat A lot cheaper and easier than replacing the engine when it blows due to oil-starvation. It is mainly labour since the fix is literally a new O-ring?
Been there and done that with a few of the problems you have with the car. Undervoltage can cause a bunch of these systems to go into protection mode. replace the batteries, and I think there's a aux battery as well. Clear the codes, and many of these things will likely work again. On the brakes, reset the SBC activation numbers. Maybe reinitialize the SBC pump. You likely have a lot fewer problems than you think. Recently, I bought a mercedes at auction with a dead battery. Was laughed at at the auction (farm equipment auction) about getting it onto a trailer. I swapped the battery which they didn't think was possible, cause the battery was under the seat, and drove the suv onto the trailer. There were about 270 error codes, with almost all of them being voltage related issues. all but 2 cleared. One is a legit problem with the ignition module, and I don't remember the other one.
It looks like now would be a perfect time to turn the traction control off to be sure that you leave no tread on that tire with the extra bubble-maybe do so a few feet away from the tire shop for safety. With the tint on the windows and RF amps shaking the store fronts a block away no one will barely notice the tire smoke 💨. Safe Travels JR 🇺🇸 PS how much was that sled?
I bet everything works. I suspect they boosted the car after the battery died and fried some fuses. A replacement battery for that car is 1000 bucks at the dealer.
It's rare that anyone ever sells you a car that isn't more broken than you thought, I surprised at this point you weren't expecting a blown engine by now.
Yep…..thats Merc for you-- i sold my CL 55 Designo and never looked back…..it was like dating a fashion model…..fast, pretty and SHALLOW. Will you make it……uh……check back with me in a few days…..😗

you missed out. it's easy to overlook, but the cls55 amg handles phenomenally well in the game. It's one of the cars that'll give you a huge gap just because it goes through turns really well. I've used it on several playthroughs, and it surprises me every time.
Nice car if everything works...... Alex would love to work on this one.
loved that game
This is really clean and seems nice. 2005 CL55 is my favorite Mercedes super coupe.
Reliable engine,have you seen LSC,s?
The prophecy has been fulfilled! WatchJrFlex, John's alter ego has been activated. 💪😎
🙏🙏🙏
I have subs in my 08 cls 550. I’m enjoying this video, this is the cls I wish I had.
I want it. And I'll bet you make it back fine. I bought an 01 E320 a couple of months for my kid and drove it from TX to WI. You'll be fine. :)
Beautifully car JR, have a great trip
I know you are going to do your own thing, but fixing things is why I watch your channel. The car tours are just not my jam. I will continue to watch all of your fixing content!
One of my favorite models of Mercedes. I love the shape and body lines
THE NOSTALGIA, my dad had 17 or 18in replicas of those wheels on his gold c320
The Brabus VIs look so good you'd think they were factory 😳
Ive been hunting for a a silver and black interior combo for a min thats clean good find
I thought I smelt something cooking in the way of a new acquisition.
The ONLY song allowed in that car is Big Tymers - Still Fly.
i wont lie, i do be watching JR go
Love aftermarket audio done well.
Remember, most codes are just caused by a flat battery. Welcome to the M113 club!
Nice car.👍
I'm surprised the dealership would even be allowed to sell a car with bubbles in the tires.
I had a similar experience with one in apopka FL left that one there because the shop was shady and obviously lied about the condition of the cls55 . Went to Gainesville GA where I bought mine.
Wow, John came to his senses! Isn't this more fun than scrappin' old Vettes and Minis?
The CLS55 is a great one year only car. SBC brakes are still under warranty by mercedes
He probably mistook that for the new 'ABC' pump. I have a RHD E500 and the SBC pump is right there.
@@leppie CLS55 doesn't have ABC, it's airmatic so JR is truly confused
Unfortunately someone hacked up the cars wiring to put in the aftermarket stereo
Curly have s55 AMG, s600 dub edition, sl500, ml550 and love the CLS. So sexy for sure. When you want to sell it or part it out let me know.
Good Luck 🍀 on your trip
The Wizard is around there somewhere, you should stop by.
I take it you've given up on your new house....it's been months since any updates. That (and rehabbing your mini-resort) we're a nice change of pace.
I think you’re bringing it up every time he puts out a new video. I have faith that he knows what he’s doing.
Wrong, I just asked today....are you his answer machine or something.
Nice! I'm fixing up a R500. Haters say it's a minivan, but Germans say "nein! It's a Grand Sports Tourer". With emphasis on "Grand"
I bet everything works. I suspect they boosted the car after the battery died and fried some fuses. A replacement battery for that car is 1000 bucks at the dealer.
😮
That one is sweet! We have had 4 come through lately at the auction. I so want one.
Ah yes. Ze German AU Falcon.
It's rare that anyone ever sells you a car that isn't more broken than you thought, I surprised at this point you weren't expecting a blown engine by now.
I remember seeing this car. I just bought a w211 wagon from Nashville. Update coming soon to my channel.
Good Evening John Ross
Sounds like typical modern car issues, stick a nice new battery on it and go from there seeing what does and doesn’t work
OH NO.. Good luck on the trip back home - What is your plans?
Have a nice drive back John.
Yep…..thats Merc for you-- i sold my CL 55 Designo and never looked back…..it was like dating a fashion model…..fast, pretty and SHALLOW. Will you make it……uh……check back with me in a few days…..😗
Looks like it was built by a company called Sound Xpression out of Mesa, AZ. I tried to post a link, but UA-cam deleted the comment. It's rocking 20-inch Lowenharts in the period photos on the Portfolio page of their website.
Yeah, comments with links are always auto deleted but I have that page pulled up to… they did insanely good work on this 🔥
It definitely looks like it was done well, I can only imagine what that system cost to install back then with all the custom enclosures and door panels. Looking forward to seeing more of this car on the channel!
JR, Alex from Legit Street Cars had the same issue on his MB and so did Hoovie. The brakes are covered for 25 years I think.
If you're going through Memphis TN stop get ribs and visit the best VW repair shop ever Wolfsburg Automotive. Those guys rock!!
You have to pay for the Carly service for real tests. They are not free.
The gap is supposed to be there. It’s in all of them, allows air in for the cooling
Alex at lsc going to love this
