I purchased shine eyed mister Zen off a recommendation from a salesman at a guitar store. On first listen it was going well. Then this song comes up. So began a nearly 20 year journey of listening to KJP. Today I read if his passing. Goodnight Kelly.

First time I heard him play was at a brew pub in Vancouver, WA. around 1993. He was all instrumental at that time, and I believe he was still teaching guitar at Clark College in Vancouver.
I couldn't believe that no one was paying attention to Kelly playing in the crowded din of that brew pub. Every time he ended a song I stood up and, boisterously, gave him a standing ovation of one while everyone else ate, drank, and talked up a storm. Kelly would spot me in the crowd, smile a little bit, and wave appreciatively.

He was such a gentle kind man. I was fortunate enough to take lessons from him at Brass Reed and Guitar in Vancouver in the late 80s. Too bad we spent most of that Time transcribing butt rock tunes…

I used to work at a cafe in Portland, Or. in 95...cafe Lena. Kelly Joe used to play during the brunch time...very noisy inside but his music shone through the din. God, what an experience! His slide is incomparable...his voice like making love.

I lived across the street in 95 and was soooooo stoked to be able to see him play dozens of times there. Some of my favorite musical memories!

Very nice....probably my favorite rendition ever...Leadbelly. Huddie's grave is not more than 10 miles from where my ass currently sits, he would be proud.

Can anyone tell me what sort of capo this is-who made it,etc? It looks like a combination of an old elastic capo/something else entirely.

I don't think there were many slide capos on the market when KJP made this video, but this is the one I use and I love it. www.jimdunlop.com/product/741-7-10137-05144-7.do

Came back to this vid, sadly after hearing of his recent passing.
His capo according to this instructional vid (I have a copy somewhere) - and from memory - is a cut-off drillbit nestled into a piece of rosewood or ebony. Anf that has a slot cut so that it sits right on top of fret position. All held together with a standard elastic capo.
The fact that he could abandon this approach after basically redefining the style - says alot. Rest easy KJP. Even if too soon departed, I say you've earned it.
