Wow, this wasn't just a tv studio with actors. These people are actually sauced, actually signing along with all their heart, genuinely having a good time. This is just TV gold right here...
my late mum's name is irene, we play this song on her funeral day..i miss her badly
Man, it's amazing what a song can do. I grew up around my Grandpa and he would do the exact same. Born in 1934, every time one of the grandkids would go to bed, he would always sing the chorus "Goodnight Irene, I'll see you in my dreams." Brings back such good memories from a simpler time.
My father and I used to play and sing this song together when he was teaching me to play guitar and sing almost sixty years ago.
saw Eric Clapton last night and he did this and my dad started to cry because my grandfather ....born in 1931 used to sing this to my dad, uncles and ant when they'd go to bed thank music is the other great equalizer
Amazing to see a global superstar playing at such a small gig. I don't know the story behind this video tape but it's a collectors item featuring Eric Clapton along with Chas and Dave. 🎸🇮🇪❤🎼👍Gerry Farry.
Why has nobody mentioned the great Albert Lee on the guitar. Wow that was an awesome version.
A beautiful waltz-country ballad, it reminds us all of good times. It is sadly unreleased.
Exactly 30 years ago from today! 22 December 1982. Real music never become old.
It's great to hear a young person appreciating good music. I'm sure your grandma loved this song lots. And when you see her again you can even have an old dance to it! All the very best.
Claptons voice is just so soulful... he can make anything sound awesome
I think it was The Weavers who had a big folk "hit" on this in the late 50's ,we all loved the song and used to sing it all the time never knowing at the time that it was written by the legendary "Leadbelly" the great blues player. Every time I hear it,I am shattered by the powerful sadness contained in the lyrics.Eric Clapton's group do a great job on this old and beloved evergreen.
So nice to see folks dancing and singing along!
My grandfather saw Leadbelly in concert; I saw Clapton with my dad. Awesome.
My mums name is Irene and her mum my gran passed away a few days ago. And she was staying in my grans house on christmas day. My grans funeral was on christmas eve and the song that was played at her funeral was Lenny Peters welcome home. On christmas night my mum was watching Chas and Dave on the tv and Welcome home came on and then goodnight Irene which my gran used to play to my mum on the piano.
+Alli newman May the Good Lord Bless You !!!!
Beautifully rendered by one of the greatest singers, Eric Claption. Love it.
Love you Eric! Beautiful rendition of Lead Belly
Maybe enough shares of this lovely song will bring the name back to popularity!
the whole atmosphere of this video is incredibly awesome
One of the most sweetest & endearing songs ever written.
One of my favorites of all time ...LOVE it.
love listening to this...it's a dying name..but I think it's rather beautiful.
Irene
Irene Haas It is dying but I like my name too. ;) Irene Hayes-Norris
Wow,what an old song--- used to sing it as a child--- L❤️VE this song
The song will always have a special place in my heart, because when I was little and dad was teaching me to play guitar he would sing this for me. Thank you for posting!
When I was little. My Grandma would always tell me "Goodnight Irene". I never understood why because my first or middle name wasnt Irene. I figured it was in reference to a song or something. i just looked it up and found this song. she was born in 1935. There are so many different versions of this song. I dont know which one she liked best. I like So saying Good night Irene to me was like an extra I love you. Im now 15. SHe died when i was 12. R.I.P Grandma. i Love you.
Greetings from old West-Berlin. This song, I love it.
I love that mood.
My grandparents used to sing this to me when I went for a visit in the summertime.
Most of the audience weren't even born when this song came out. It says a lot for music from "The Good OL' Days" AH Those Were The Days.
man played heavy rock and it is so gentle with simple guitar work with more melody. Great man and highly accomodative. Thanks EC and if any body has EC's e mail i want to appreciate him.
Eric is fantastic magic guitarist.
I know him at my teenage time, I like eric songs style the most at 80'. Well that's no doubt I'll follow him in coming futue.
A wonderful song a wonderful version ____ wish I was there
Clapton doing Leadbelly? My life is complete, THANK YOU for sharing :)
This is why George let Eric's guitar 'gently weep.' Eric's solo...captured the pathos of Leadbelly.
What an atmosphere !
In this great song don't forget Albert Lee (guitar). Thanks from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
love this! great version!
Little Richard also does a very good job of it..the one I grew up listeneing to with my parents and grandparents. You should never feel like an outcast for listening to what makes your heart and soul feel the best. The songs you are listening too have lasted all these years ,the music most of the kids play today will be forgotten about by the end of the month when the next new big thing pops up.You have a lot of style kid.
Lovely rendition. Thank you.
irene is so special song,it has all what a track need .beautifull.

Albert Lee on rhythm guitar? Unbelievable!
Big Brian
Came here while looking for Keith Richards' version from his new album. Found this instead. Took me straight back to the 1960s, some crowded smokey London pub somewhere in the suburbs; everybody sitting round a big table singing this - and many other - songs and not a dry eye in the house by the end. Everyone, from the oldest to the youngest, seemed to know all the words to all the old songs.
Do people still do this in England? Or is everyone too sophisticated now for a good old pub sing-song?
Yes we still do it Thank Frank from York uk
ah a good old pub gig with a singing atmosphere, couples on the dance floor those days are all gone now unfortunately
What a sweet voice. Going to the River breaks my heart. Bless all on the east coast and wherever. And Kiss Off Irene
For all Bristol Rovers fans!

Clapton classic
I generally don't care much for Mr. Clapton, but this is one of the best renditions of 'Irene' ever. I especially love the audience. I wish I had been there.

Great song to have during the annual raffle!
Soulful!
this is when everyone would have a sing down the pub....I miss this
saw them do this at the end of a fundraiser in Cranleigh village hall around the same time...the whole place was singing there heads off !
Yes, Hurricane Irene brought me here as well. THis Clapton is not the one I've admired of late.
@javaman64 The Singer is David Victor Peacock (Dave)...the dude on the piano is Charles (Chas) Hodges...together they are Chas and Dave, a dodgy folk/rock duo from the East end of London....
Thanks! it is very special.I I dont listen to it too often because I still miss my grandma.( i just turned 16) Im a huge fan of british music so yeah. This how I found this version:) I hate my generations music because its so dumb.I hate being an outcast in some sort because of my music but Oh well. I will continue to remember my grandma and will hopefully see her again soon.:)

Songtext to Goodnight Irene :
[Chorus:]
Irene, goodnight. Irene, goodnight
Goodnight, Irene. Goodnight, Irene.
I'll see you in my dreams.
Last Saturday night I got married.
Me and my wife settled down.
Now, me and my wife are parted.
Gonna take a little stroll downtown.
[Chorus]
Yeah, sometimes I live in the country
And sometimes I live in town.
Yeah, and sometimes I take a great notion
I'm gonna jump in the river and drown.
[Chorus]
Stop ramblin'. Stop that gamblin'.
Stop staying out late at night.
Go home to your wife and family.
Stay there by the fireside, bright.
[Chorus]
Goodnight, Irene. Goodnight, Irene.
I'll see you in my dreams.
LEADBELLY LIVES ON
