Listening and listening, again and again. For years now. I love this song - combination of voice and guitar, melody, statement and feeling. Such a commanding performance! KJP, so sad you are gone. We miss you! We miss your music!
His music will make you smile and cry, I have never heard anyone command the guitar and voice like Kelly. Yet, the masses overlook the diamond that continues to shine so brightly...
It doesn't matter what he plays, the sounds are always beautiful and REAL, in a bittersweet melancholy way....... Timeless spiritual blues for us weary souls, and we still have.forever to go ~>?
I was professionally tested and found to have 'perfect pitch. Kelly Joe's intertwining of voice, rhythm and instrumentation, so far as I can tell, is perfect!!!
simply the best i've ever heard when he's on form and the crowd are respectful, best gigs i've ever been to, it's as if he's channelling it through him, completely lost in music, my hair stands up to even think about it!
Got this video sent to me by a friend...didn't know Phelps but just fell in love with his guitar and warm voice the first time I saw it. Great video, thanks!
Great song. I've been playing that song for a while and have seen the man a few times live. That's an open G tuning with capo on 2. DGDGBD. Give that a go and it'll all come good. You can see the shapes he pulls and spends a lot of time on the G, D and B strings often leaving the other strings open to ring.
yeah i hear ya, i quit for over a year, but i just can,t live without the guitar. As much as i hate it sometimes the rewards are out there for those that seek them.
Portland produces some fine musicians. Kelly Jo is one of the best. Tony Furtado, with whom Kelly has played, is also sweet & fine. We got more than Pink Martini going on in the Rose City.
Loved KJP, sad to know we are going miss out on some great songs had he stayed with us. No tab and very little footage of 'not so far to go' but I had a crack at it - see my cover and it might help you with chord shapes if you want to learn it. Impossible to replicate KJP though of course, such good control of the guitar and vocals
@flyhaf Thanks for the suggestions, and congrats on your playing! Saw some videos of yours and really liked them. Don't quit playing again...I think you could get far doing what you're doing. Wish I could play like you :)
I can't make my mind up it's so cool to listen to and he doesn't even look at the guitar while he plays, he should put it out in Tab form so we can try to fully understand his genius.
RIP, Kelly Joe. I love your music so much.

The combination of his superb guitar work and the most expressive and engaging vocals I’ve ever heard just blows me away.

The union of vocal and guitar into perfection. Thank you KJP.

A superb guitarist and vocals to match - Saw him in Manchester UK and you could hear a pin drop - brilliant intermate concert. Please come back...

Please get better and come to Hull. You can stop with me buddy. X
To whom is the reference at 00:14? I don't get it. Can anyone give me a name please?
In January 1999 Kelly sang POOR OLD MATTIE at the KINK studio. But RL Burnside song is POOR BLACK MATTIE...
hey, can anyone upload that Kelly's song on youtube or somewhere? it seems that it exists on CD only, but not in the web.
Standard tuning, capo 2nd. It's in A I believe.
is this open g?
