I genuinely love these videos, as someone who's also self taught I can truly appreciate that rewarding satisfaction that comes with finding your own shooting style that helps you nail that target.
Well done ,,, there's thousands of videos out there ... and I watched hundreds of them ... you're painstakingly going through every step not only how you should stand and what you should be looking at ... Also what you should be thinking ,,, very good ,,, thank you so much ... D
Yeah man ,,, thanks for touching on all the reasons for getting outside ,,, and sling'n some arrows ... I live out in the country and we used to have an excellent little golf course with a par 5 ,,, you got to pitch across a creek a couple times ... just being out there ,,, I think that's what this is about you know getting you out away from whatever might be troubling you ... I think archery is a lot like golf ... in that it isn't like shooting a gun ,,, it's more like throwing a baseball ,,, you know you got to be the ball or " the arrow " ,,, thanks a lot man ... D
I cannot thank you enough for this video! I have been shooting an English style longbow (50# @ 28") on and off for a few years and just started getting back into it after a three year hiatus. My issue has always been inconsistent shooting. Watching this video and seeing a proper draw and form technique helped immensely. Went from 1 out of 8 shots on target (a water bottle at ten yards) to 3 out of 5 at the same distance within five minutes of practicing exactly what I saw here. Turns out a huge part of my issue and why i couldn't anchor well or consistently was I was drawing from my bicep and not my back. You sir are amazing and once again thank you!
+A magic. YES! Absolutely. I shoot compound with a release & anchor points are still absolutely crucial to consistent shooting - as some of my woefully low scoresheets will attest when I've been careless with my anchoring.
I watched this 2x. I can relate and agree 100%. Shooting a bow is one of the greatest mystical peaceful relaxing wonderful things to do and in this case to think about. Great video I'll share it.
Talking about climbing ,,, I'm from Florida ... I've never seen a hill much less a mountain ,,, but I was up in Carolina at Linville Falls ... And we was going to jump off the waterfall ,,, and you got to climb a 50-foot rockface ... I had some climbers telling me where to put my hands and feet ... I did well ,,, but I was terrified ... I knew if I was going to jump ,,, I had to do it immediately ... I had a army buddy been to war ,,, but he waited a few minutes to jump ... He had to climb down ... D
Fantastic video that really serves to reinforce the process. It blended everything together from start to release, I don't think I have ever seen a better done video on shooting a bow ,KUDOS, KUDOS. SO WELL DONE!!!😊
Great video. As a beginner archer researching the sport, it seems that there are a lot of passionate people out there trying to express their archery views and techniques, but your video was more well shot, spoken, and edited than most of what I have viewed to get across some useful basics of the craft. Thank you for the effort
As someone who's never fired a bow before (shall be buying a bow set tomorrow from you guys) I found this really interesting and informative, can't wait to get in to the sport :)
First off I want to thank you for this video because it completely changed my form and my shooting has improved dramatically! I was hunching and pulling with my arm therefor I wasn't really pulling my scapula all that tight which resulted not pulling full draw on the bow. I been shooting a 50# bow with this new form it literally feels like a 40# bow night and day difference! Now my muscles are soar but in a good way and it feels amazing!
This video, as well as other ones I've seen by Jim, is really helpful. Especially the constant reminder to be CONSISTENT! And as a guitar player, I think his vids have THE Coolest music! Thanks for your work at making these!
I started watching your videos about 2 weeks before I shot my first bow you have helped a lot I started shooting about 4-5 months ago and today I shot a shoe string nearly in half that was third to a tree limb with a bottle of water hanging at the bottom. so thank you for the great advice :)
Nice work. I try to tell people you can learn how to do nearly anything from youTube if you just find a guy. You referenced Jeff K. That guy is a badass. Watching videos of you and him imparts decades of knowledge and 1000s of arrows in a few minutes. If applied correctly, things should go well. Things are going very well already. Out of three arrows, two of them were center circle side by side and the third resting on top of the other two at 10m. I almost lost it. I've only been shooting for 2 days now but had a couple of goes at it. I would say I have less than 200 arrows fired with double digit center circle hits. The center of my target is just a hole the size of a quarter now. Not beginner's luck. I think about every shot. Even listen to the sound of the string after release. I figure the less I hear it, the better the release, but if it is twanging, the short usually went off. Still working on that theory.
Hi Jim. Thank you very much, for taking your time to really describe and show how you shoot a bow. I'm a new archer, and I found this video very helpful. Thank you! Best regards - Morten Bruun, Denmark
"not worried about where they're going", I imagined at this point he'd impaled a nearby cow or something. Great vid, really interesting for someone like me who has only done archery a couple of times and made me think about some of the really obvious mistakes I was making. Cheers for the info
Just had my first proper archery session (and, already I'm hooked:) - 13:32 is something I wish I'd known/realised earlier today. I think I'm even going to have an impressive bruise from some shots where I was consciously thinking about the release, thus almost _plucking_ the string (and somehow send it hitting my arm between the guard and my wrist) Anyways, quality tips and inspiration here that I'll definitely carry onto next Tuesday's shooting. Which I hardly can't wait for. Thanks for that!
Thanks for another great video. As usual, very helpful. I' m just going back to archery after 40 years and the wife is just starting so we both get good value. The English videos (and Canadian) aren't as egotistical, or just trying to sell something as the Yanks. Pity. About the weather, it's been mid to high 30's (Celsius) for months now in Oz. Come and visit.
I watched this videos over and over again eventhough I have been shooting for 2 years now, having a refresher course going back to the basic from a master archer is always beneficial for me. But I still cannot related to the analogy of crushing cans with my shoulder blade.
Thanks for the quickly mentioned point...at the first anchor point KEEP PULLING. I was bracing my hand in a frozen position and my release was comical at best. Now it it so simple to release and basically just fall into the second anchor point.
Good video. I always have to have a couple beers before watching your vids to keep me mellow (you're wired pretty tight) but you always have a point or two I can pass on to my young archers. Keep it up .
Nicely done!! An informative and relaxed approach to shooting. I've always found archery to be a bit 'zen' perhaps a little like fly fishing where form is more the challenge rather than the outcome. I've lost my shooting mojo but I think vids like this one might just help me get it back. Thanks!
I am left eye domination but my right arm doesn’t straighten due to accident, so l will need to hold the riser in my left hand. I shoot pistols left handed but both eyes open. Have not shot a bow since my teens but watching you shoot makes me think I may have an other go at it. Great video 👍
I'm a total novice, so I'm sure my form is garbage, but I did notice after the last time I shot that I had some muscle soreness in my upper back the next day, which I found kind of encouraging. My right bicep wad a little sore, too, but I def felt it in my back muscles.
hey there Jim I was wondering if you could do a video on strings the different types Flemish twist in this loop the pros and cons and which one you would prefer in the reason why you would prefer that particular one thank you very much great videos keep them coming
Hey Jim, did you ever do any physical exercises for your arms and back in order to be able to handle higher poundage bows? I've been working out with a kettlebell for a while now just to be able to handle my 40# short recurve. I mean I can shoot it no problem, it's just that after few shots, I struggle to keep my bow steady, start to shake a lot. I don't understand why, I can hold my 35# flatbow all day long at full draw. (and yeah my flatbow is about 10 inches longer than my recurve so it's only natural that it is much smoother to draw and hold, but still....) Thanks
Going to the gym and lifting helped me, but no substitute for pulling a bow. The muscle groups used for archery are difficult to target in the gym. I did the same thing you are talking about to work up in poundage. Living in Alaska, it was kinda my only option for staying strong in the winter. I’m not really one to shoot much when it’s really cold and nasty out side(indoor archery just kills my soul). If I lived in a climate that allowed me to shoot every day, I would buy a bow slightly lighter than what you have, and shoot the hell out of it. Once you get to the point where you can shoot 100-150 arrows a day with good form and accuracy with out much of a problem, then move up 5 lbs. as time goes by, repeat process. Just my 2 cents.
Great videos Jim. I have a question. I switched from a recurve bow to a hybrid longbow. The longbow has a more traditional flat grip. I noticed that your bow hand grip on a recurve is loose. Do you recommend a loose grip on the longbow or do you change your grip? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Very Nice video! Have you ever shot sporting clays? I have been shooting clays for a good 10 years and I find that this video shares many characteristics that are shared. Just substitute a smooth trigger pull for your release and you pretty much got it. Still loving my Timber Creek Cobra!
where is the string when you are at full draw? in the center of the bow? in line with the arrow or just doesn't matter? i have a problem to keep the arrow in line with my eye so maybe the string position is the key...when i aim using the tip my groups are on the left (i am right handed).
Im new to archery I've got kinetic halo with mybo synergy air limbs my tiller height is 6/12inch and my brace height is 8.3/4 inch wen I shoot in the garden the target is 20yrds away but if I aim for the bull it goes a foot over to hit it I need to shoot about 13inch lower nd sometimes it goes in the red or blue. They no vibration at all and wen I pull it bk the bow stays still so tiller must b OK. Any idea people. Thanks graeme.
jim im about 6 months into archery i feel confident about everything except my hand allways flicks away from my face and i feel it would be more consistent to do something else. i have a vid of me shooting if u would like to see me but do u have any pointers to help me out
+William Stanway having two anchor points, when you release from your primary anchor point , bring your fingers back to a second anchor point and it should help .
+lucian epperhart just had a quick look at your video, it's fine but you need a second anchor point. for me when i release the string, i sort of slide my hand back to my ear. Do that every time and you won't flick away. It can be any second anchor, but one along the same line as your standard anchor is best; it just carries on the release smoother. Other than that, keep it up ^_^
Hi there Grizzly Jim. I was wondering what brand of the shootingglove you are using? I have bought the neet traditionel tg-5 traditionel glove, but have found the leatherpadding on the fingertips to thick for my taste. I am therefore looking for another shootingglove, and the one you have look comfortable. Kind regards!
Removed one comment, put in another :) Love this video channel.. Ive just started with archery and the videos you guys produce are exelent!. Thanx for a good job. Btw, i shoot film and videos so the no color correction stuck in my eyes.. Didnt wanna be that guy. Rock n Roll..
that's a good question. far as I can tell you (as I've ever been taught) the more grip (skin on wood) you have on the bow, the more torque you put on it, the bow will twiston release, your shot may go wild, or you may may be off-mark by a few inches, but your accuracy will be affected. I use a bow sling (thumb-first-finger loop) & my only contact with the bow is round the heel of my thumb. I don't encircle the grip at all with my fingers & let the bow-sling catch the bow's fall-forward (it does take a bit of time to learn to trust the bow-sling. when I learned that trick it took a while to learn that not gripping the bow would not result in my bow clattering to the ground. but my shots & accuracy improved exponentially when I did suss it out. mark me, I still do occasionally forget & lightly encircle the grip. but I try to catch & override that instinct)
Is there anyway I can make a bow better, because I have one and its's really bad, but I enjoy shooting. And what do you think I could use as a practice target, my arrows are litteraly only thin wooden sticks ;(
I've only just bought a bow and started watching videos about archery before I fire my first shots. Let's hope I can learn something heh... Nah I'm kidding, I'm just making sure I have the theory down before putting it into practice since I'll be self taught.... I don't like people enough to look for a club in County Durham.
+MerlinArchery i thought so, cobra looks darker in the pictures i've seen so far. Any chance on a upcoming video of this model? Or maybe some more detailed pictures? I'm looking to replace my first recurve (samick lion) by a more poundage and quality bow! Thanks
I believe some have just arrived... But the majority of them went out for pre-orders... But the guys at Timber Creek have stepped up production so we will be getting bigger quantities coming through :)
one thing. how do you get away with nipping down the woods for a bit of bowshooting? PS, narcissistic? you are taking time out of your day & shoot to freely pass on your knowledge of our art. that's not narcissism. that is teaching. thank you. sincerely
All very well to quote James Dickey but I had best have confidence in my surgeon and HE best have confidence in him self ( also experience) . You don't want amateur night when somebody is working YOU!
You do it right after you're at full draw - from the backside it looks like you're trying to hug the bow with your neck. Going in for an intimate kiss eh?
I genuinely love these videos, as someone who's also self taught I can truly appreciate that rewarding satisfaction that comes with finding your own shooting style that helps you nail that target.

A well thought out and nicely presented video packed with plenty of useful information - Well done Jim
Thank you :)
+MerlinArchery now when you aim do you look down the arrow?
Do the anchor points still come into play when you use a release?
+A magic. YES!
Great video I'll share it.
you should try climbing then

Archery confidence has helped me in my skeet shooting, fly fishing and job interviews I think.
I love the humility from someone who has been shooting for 30+ years and considered an expert.
As someone who's never fired a bow before (shall be buying a bow set tomorrow from you guys) I found this really interesting and informative, can't wait to get in to the sport :)
I really enjoy your videos Jim, thank you for being an inspiration to so many trad archers around the world!
Well presented, and always an excellent idea to re-examine technique from the basics. Thank you.

Great great great! Between you and Clay Hayes, I've learned a ton. Great explaination and break down!! Thank you so much!!
This is hands down your best video Jim.
Thanks Jim, glad to see you out shooting and making videos again!
This video, as well as other ones I've seen by Jim, is really helpful. Especially the constant reminder to be CONSISTENT! And as a guitar player, I think his vids have THE Coolest music! Thanks for your work at making these!
Nice video, Jim. Always love hearing the different ways people describe the shot process. Well done.

Great video my friend. I just started shooting my new recurve today and I really appreciate your videos they are a big help
thanks
Thanks man helped a lot i used to do this when I was little ,starting again really got me back into form
Great review Jim. I appreciate all the great tips.
Excellent video, thanks Jim!
Thanks for the quickly mentioned point...at the first anchor point KEEP PULLING. I was bracing my hand in a frozen position and my release was comical at best. Now it it so simple to release and basically just fall into the second anchor point.

my first shot set has just been delivered, il be going out to try after watching :)
excellent presentation
I learnt on compound bows & man it is hard to adjust to traditional bows
It's very similar to setting up for a golf shot. I used to shoot rifles and that's like it too, repeat and repeat for muscle memory and consistency.
This is a really good overview.
Awesome!! I just ordered phantom recurve bow kit so I need tips xD Great Video, keep it up!
Another brilliant video. Thank you
Love your videos always very thorough and informative. Are those Easton 'Da Torch' arrows?
Thank you very much... Yes they are :)
I am left eye domination but my right arm doesn’t straighten due to accident, so l will need to hold the riser in my left hand.
I shoot pistols left handed but both eyes open.
Have not shot a bow since my teens but watching you shoot makes me think I may have an other go at it.
Great video 👍
Thanks a lot for sharing, helpful intro that was fleshed out enough but not too overwhelming. Keep it up please :)
Wonderful video, Jim! Thanks for all the advice, and the demonstrations too...and please make more videos like this, for us instinctive archers :)
I'm a total novice, so I'm sure my form is garbage, but I did notice after the last time I shot that I had some muscle soreness in my upper back the next day, which I found kind of encouraging. My right bicep wad a little sore, too, but I def felt it in my back muscles.
You've explained this really well I think. Thanks
hey there Jim I was wondering if you could do a video on strings the different types Flemish twist in this loop the pros and cons and which one you would prefer in the reason why you would prefer that particular one thank you very much great videos keep them coming
I liked this.... But however many times did you sigh like you were fed up?
I think it's just that it can be difficult to explain.
(and yeah my flatbow is about 10 inches longer than my recurve so it's only natural that it is much smoother to draw and hold, but still....)
Thanks
Pullups, rear delt dumbell flys, lat pull downs, one armed dumbell rows.
Thanks for sharing this information.
When I bought my first bow, I thought all I had to do was aim and shoot... how wrong I was.
I really, really like to see a video about Mybo Wave, Mybo Elite, and Mybo limbs.
I´m looking for a new riser. :)
Any word when the review for that Cobra will be out? Would love to see it in both finishes, sounds like a sweet shooter.
Really nice video! For others videos can you talk about how to make my bow more silent? Thanks you! 😉👍
Great video!
review the samick red stag please
Very Nice video! Have you ever shot sporting clays? I have been shooting clays for a good 10 years and I find that this video shares many characteristics that are shared. Just substitute a smooth trigger pull for your release and you pretty much got it. Still loving my Timber Creek Cobra!
Awesome video! Thanks man
Nice job, your bow seems quite. From South Carolina USA
where is the string when you are at full draw? in the center of the bow? in line with the arrow or just doesn't matter? i have a problem to keep the arrow in line with my eye so maybe the string position is the key...when i aim using the tip my groups are on the left (i am right handed).

And how have I done that?
ScienceIsNotBiased what arrow
Thanks for the video, I learned some key points for this which I hope to improve my form with. Also, those arrows look awesome, what are they?
Helpful! Thanks, mate!
Very informative.
So as a musician who's just started to use a bow...it's the same thing. Basics (to a point) locked in with how the motion feels.

Lol no worries buddy! :) shoot straight!
At the end of the video it shows your grip during a shot. You seen to have 2 or 3 fingers curled back and not around the grip. Is there a reason?
that's a good question. far as I can tell you (as I've ever been taught) the more grip (skin on wood) you have on the bow, the more torque you put on it, the bow will twiston release, your shot may go wild, or you may may be off-mark by a few inches, but your accuracy will be affected. Where do you live it's very beautiful!
I was thinking that when I read your comment
Always did Mediterranean , then started three under and it seems SO less awkward I can't go back.... Now I can't do Nfas hunting tackle :(
Does the timbercreek cobra allways has this light colour of wood (riser&limbs) or is this a custom version?
Thanks for the vid!!
No that is a custom model :)
+MerlinArchery i thought so, cobra looks darker in the pictures i've seen so far. Any chance on a upcoming video of this model? Or maybe some more detailed pictures? I'm looking to replace my first recurve (samick lion) by a more poundage and quality bow! Thanks
I shot a recurve bow many yrs, at the end i was shotting a 70 lb bow.
When will we see more cottonmouths in rh and 55 pound abailable?? Im dying to get my hands on one! :)
I believe some have just arrived... But the majority of them went out for pre-orders... But the guys at Timber Creek have stepped up production so we will be getting bigger quantities coming through :)
+MerlinArchery Sounds great! Thanks for the update, keep up the great work! Ill keep my eye on the site to see if they come available.
legend
Thanks!
one thing. how do you get away with nipping down the woods for a bit of bowshooting? PS, narcissistic? you are taking time out of your day & shoot to freely pass on your knowledge of our art. that's not narcissism. that is teaching. thank you. sincerely
I think the guy at the back can trained to do it without thinking but the guy at front is where the intuition comes in to it 🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹👍🏻
Shoots for no other reason than the sheer pleasure of launching an arrow off of a string at a target. My kind of archer.
All very well to quote James Dickey but I had best have confidence in my surgeon and HE best have confidence in him self ( also experience) . You don't want amateur night when somebody is working YOU!
thanks excellent
Both eye's open sight down the Arrow over time one learns his or her distance and you will hit your mark !!
You tilt your head into the shot >.<
It looks like you're trying to look around the riser?
You do it right after you're at full draw - from the backside it looks like you're trying to hug the bow with your neck. Going in for an intimate kiss eh?
very good Video, thank you very much :)
Thanks alot :D Now I know, how to shoot and hit the target :D
For a moment I thought, wait, aren't we supposed to shoot an arrow, and not a bow...?
Haha thanks for the upload.
🏹 gap shoot with confidence 🤗
