  • “He turns your soul out” was how my Russian pen pal described Dostoevsky’s work in attempt to verbalize his effect on her using the English language. It struck me because that was actually how I had felt after a few encounters with his work.
In this video I provide a brief timeline of D’s life, work, and my personal journey with him that is long from over.
The painting in the thumbnail and background is “Dostoevsky Painting” by Anatoly Shumkin.

Haha I feel you. It took me a while when I read it in English too. The last 10% of it will have you unable to stop reading though!! The best thing ab reading is there’s no rush fr

I would like to be “so lazy” that I read a tough novel and then immediately try reading the same novel in its original language. Real “lazy” 😉

You are the furthest from being a "lazy piece of - ", Marquez does not have a long shelf life for everyone and you might be discovering that. Listen those "young people" books about philosophers and such can be great introductions to their subjects and there's no need to disdain them! 👍 Why are you reading de Bouvier the Bore, read Balzac - I predict he will become your French Dostoyevsky 👍

I just need to get my hands on some Balzac! Im reading BTB because the book fit in my coat pocket perfectly and I was running out of luggage space by the time I made it to Brussels!

👍 You'll want to read Balzac's "Lost Illusions" it is big but straightforward once you get past his wordy introductory phases, we know from Dostoyevsky that you have no problem doing that. Like Dostoyevsky, with Balzac the effort is more than worth it 👍
