I’m a wheelchair user with a variety of disabilities. I don’t find a food processor to be a very accessible item, so I do chop up everything by hand. I also enjoy chopping up vegetables. It makes me feel like I’m really cooking lol. Onions really bother my moms eyes, so I chop them up for her. It’s very therapeutic lol.
Guy Mats If you cook at home, do try this. Vegetarian gyoza are really yummy! You are in the SF Bay Area, right? Keep looking...I know my local Japanese restaurant offers vegetarian gyoza. They can't be the only one! Also, if you have an Asian market near you, I think they generally offer some frozen vegetarian options. They are really easy to cook, and are usually pretty good. Sending best wishes your way!
I made your Mom’s gyoza twice already, and love this recipe as I’m vegetarian, half-Japanese and have to eat Japanese soul food when I can. Sadly, most Gyoza recipes include meat so the only way to eat them is to make my own. Your gyoza is delicious and I’ve served it to guests who also love it. You boys warm my heart and I enjoy your videos and appreciate that you include vegan food when you can. Thank you!!
Two thoughts: 1. Using a food processor would turn your vegetables into more of a uniform mush and your gyoza would lose some of their homemade taste. 2. Jewish secret for draining water out of vegetables properly (a must for good latkes): put all of them in a kitchen towel, twist the towel at the top to close it, and squeeze the vegetables while they are inside the towel. You can do it with all the vegetables at once, and squeeze harder without losing any, plus the towel soaks up some water, too. It's the easiest way to do it!
I like listening to the sound of the knife on the cutting board. Reminds me when I was a kid and our older women are bustling all over the kitchen. The sound of chopping, pounding and bubbling were like music to my ears. And the smell... Those were the days 😊
I'm always super excited to see Japanese dishes veganized! Considering I might move there someday, I was always a little concerned bc traditional Japanese cuisine has so much fish and different meats but these videos really give me hope :> plus you guys are literally my favorite Japanese foodies❤
Just made these and they turned out delicious!! Heres a tip: make a couple dumplings first and try them out, if they are not seasoned enough you can add more to the filling mix! I find that dried shiitake mushrooms add more of an umami flavour as well ☺️ Some hot sauce on the side and BAM you got a great snack
Ever since I was young, my mother and father made this delicious homemade spaghetti sauce. Whenever I smell the sauce cooking on the stovetop, it completely covers the home in such a nostalgic feeling! I love it!! and these gyoza's look amazing!
I tried gyoza-ro in Harajuku. I tried one of each of their gyozas so essentially they have 2 flavors and you can have them pan fried or steamed. 6 pieces for 290 yen (3$)! Absolutely delicious, fresh and cheap! I'll be going back several more times on my next trip!
Thanks for this! These look really delicious. I had a friend from China who made gyoza for me with various tofu fillings; one recipe was almost like this. She also made one recipe with egg, green onion, garlic, and ginger that was amazing. In her part of China, it was more common to boil the dumplings. They were so good! Thanks for the video, and I send good wishes to you both. Hugs!
TabiEats PS Regarding crying while chopping onions...if you have any goggles at home, like you might use for swimming, skiing, or even home repairs, they say that helps. Try wearing them while slicing onions next time. Also, they say keeping your knife well-sharpened helps to reduce the problem. Good luck!
So I actually just made these. Apparently I couldn’t find premade dumpling wrappers so I homemade them (and wow it took 3 hours by myself and I ended up with 40 wrappers or something- please don’t take lightly the recommendation to buy it if you’re tight on time) BUT Let me just tell you, your recipe is SUPERB. I was literally dousing my dumplings in the sauce and savoring them bite by bite lol. With that said, thank you so much for sharing this wonderful creation!
I like to chop my vegetables by hand I find it quite therapeutic actually. Haha cutting only half an onion you should only cry half as much lol. If you worry about meat in the gyoza getting cooked properly you could use leftover meat that has already been cooked. They looked delicious!!👸👑💗💗💗💗💗
I don’t know if I’ve commented previously, but I’ve made these several times & they are SO delicious & satisfying. Making them again this coming weekend. My go-to. I’ve tried another recipe, after making these, & I’ll never stray again. Purple cabbage is gorgeous in them, FYI. Thank you!
My parents were stationed in Japan for 5 years and brought home lots of Japanese recipes they Americanized. We make gyoza with ground beef, cabbage and ginger. I love them. We always made them as a family with mom and kids making the dumpling and my dad trying them.
i completely agree 100% with you..i love nothing more than chopping and preparing ingredients for a recipe and seeing all the colours laying out. it's like therapy..taking the time to chop things to the sized i prefer etc gives me more satisfaction when it's all done because I've not cut corners and I've done it all myself..it's more gratifying that way. these look absolutely scrumptious 😍.i can't wait to "attempt" these 😅.. this is the only channel i ever attempt anything you guys make. you guys remember we're just normal people and not all chefs 😅 and i must admit..the things i have attempted to copy have all turned out great because you make things so easy to follow so thank you😍😘🤗
oh man i really need to make this. i love gyoza and i love tofu. I have a mighty NEED. Satoshi and I are the same person! LET HIM EAT RAW GARLIC! My nostalgic dish is pickling baby mangos with my mom! man just thinking about it makes my mouth water. they would go great with these! thank you as always
I absolutely love this recipe! I was searching how to make vegetable dumplings and came across things video, I’m so happy I chose this exact recipe. It’s way better than the ones i buy at the super market ❤️
Yay! I love this!!! I try to have at least 2 meals each week to be meatless and I'm so glad I can add these to the rotation. I have always loved your mother's gyoza recipe and I make it almost weekly, but this one is epic! Looks delicious and oh so easy. Thanks for sharing your recipe, I can't wait to try it. 😁😁👌👌❤️❤️
I'm ready for some gyoza now! Yum. Love the Japanese word of the day...Negi. Our family has a Spring tradition of foraging and digging ramps ( Allium tricoccum is a North American species of wild onion). We gather around the table and clean them, we fry them in bacon grease and eat them with eggs, fried potatoes, bacon, brown beans and corn bread. Then we all sit around watching TV, and fall asleep. LOL The meal is very heavy, so it makes us sleepy.
The simple way to keep your eyes and nose from running when chopping onions is to cut it in half or quarters then soaking in a bowl of ice water for about 30-60 minutes. That removes/neutralizes the sulphuric acid, the fumes of which is what irritates the mucous membranes of the eyes and nose. Unless I have a lot of veggies to chop requiring uniformity of resulting size I will chop by hand. A good sharp knife doesn't bruise the veggies leading to loss of crisp flavor. This is especially true with herbs - you're much better rolling and slicing in a chiffade rather than crushing and bruising along the cuts.
Oh yes, vegan gyoza! I'm so happy! I made veggie gyoza for my husband this Valentine's Day - it was my substitute for honmei choco. The gyoza came out pretty good, but there was definitely room for improvement. I can’t wait to make your recipe. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I love cutting up my veggies. Processor has a different purpose I feel. Thank u for sharing vegan Japanese recipes, I feel the trick to being a happy vegan is having variety, I cook all different cuisines. ❤
Thank you so much for these videos, I just made my first gyoza from your recipe and they are incredible, my wrapping needs work, but the taste is great.
I just finished making these and they were so good! I made the wrapping papers from scratch so it was kinda hard to fold them but it turn out great! I would only wish to marnated the tofu. Thank you so much and for ppl who are trying this recipe, don't give up! You can do it!🤗🥰
I like this video sooo much! It's so simple and tasty! I used to try to search for Chinese vegan dumpling fillings, but they just use over complicated ingredients or cannot be seriously vegan. I am so satisfied watching this video!
I’ve spent years perfecting my Italian red sauce. I’ve finally landed on a recipe that is real good, isn’t too time consuming and versatile. It’s great on pasta and on home made pizza!
The inside of the dumpling seems delicious! Wonton and gyoza wrappers aren't always vegan, so definitely read the ingredients on the back of the package to check!
This is great! I'm gonna make this tomorrow :) When I was a kid I used to make polish dumplings with my mum too (pierogi) and the wrapping was always my favourite part :D
Yum, I recently made sauce for gyoza: soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, spiced or regular rice vinegar, oyster sauce, sesame seeds, hot pepper flakes or ground hot pepper. It was delicious with chicken gyozas.
My grandmother ate raw garlic and onion everyday. I'm sad to say that I used to be a cooking monster and they started cooking at 6 years old alone in the kitchen! I have nerve damage in my hands now so unless I teach a caregiver to make these I go to the Asian market and buy a bag of frozen vegetable gyoza. But I do make my own sauce I use soy sauce vinegar a quarter of a teaspoon of sugar toasted sesame seeds and lots of finely diced scallion. :-)
I love your recipe videos! Can you make Chicken Doria? Is it ドリア? I think it is a Japanese/ western/ french fusion dish? Great work on all the cooking videos and I love you guys live stream! So much fun!
I tried making these tonight and I had a few issues. My mixture was not smooth enough I need to break up the tofu more and I could not get the pleats and they kept popping open at the end even with less filling. It was worth trying though and not bad for my first time. They tasted delicious even with my errors ♥
So sorry you had so much trouble. It’s tricky at first and takes some practice. I’ve been making them since I was a child so it’s easy for me. Keep practicing and you’ll be a master on no time!
I am going to try these this week. I love to get them when I’m out but now I can make them at home. And thanks for doing a vegan video. Do some more 🙏🏾

I sometimes like to grate everything. lol
You could actually use those manual vegetable choppers... it’s much easier and small to handle
Lisa TheCatDude you are a wholesome person!
For me with my disabilities a food processor is great for me 😅
Are you still in a wheel chair ???
This is GREAT! I'm a vegetarian and gave up gyoza because it is usually always filled with meat. You guys always make cooking so easy! Thank You!

I totally agree...I love doing everything by hand!! That's part of the joy of cooking!! Really enjoy both of you!!
Great video! Alternatively I always add rice vinegar (either white or black) in place of water for the steaming part. It works great as well!
I love to chop and prep food it's relaxing to me. The more you do the better you get. I rinse the onion under water once you cut in half it does help
My parents were stationed in Japan for 5 years and brought home lots of Japanese recipes they Americanized. We make gyoza with ground beef, cabbage and ginger. I love them. We always made them as a family with mom and kids making the dumpling and my dad trying them.
Americanized gyoza actually sounds yummy!
YES!chopping and cutting is part of the fun in cooking. It is kind of a meditation.

Thank you so much for keeping us vegetarians in mind! Can't wait to try this recipe
Thanks for the vegan Gyoza 😊
Thank you for this vegan recipe! It looks delicious and I can't wait to make it at home.
Mushroom is a fungi though🤔 am I getting something wrong
Sharone Rosie what’s your point?
@@sharone1273 Fungi are neither plants or animals so you don’t consume any meat.
@@chmntr yeah I was halff asleep when I wrote that comment 😁🤦
Tenk u ! My husband will love dis recipe😍
I’m looking forward to trying this out in my kitchen! Ty!

I made them last night and they were delicious. They were so full of flavour. Thanks for posting this.
I keep whole dry shiitake mushrooms and I rehydrate them to use for recipes like this as they are so much more concentrated in the flavor and umami.
Maybe Justin likes the sweetness and the crunch of the cabbage core.
Thank you for the vegetarian/vegan video!! I've been looking for a good gyoza recipe to try!! I want to try it right now!! :D
Thank you so much for these videos, I just made my first gyoza from your recipe and they are incredible, my wrapping needs work, but the taste is great.

Saved it to my favorite recipes. Thank you!
Something that is nostalgic for me would be chicken and dumplings. Beautiful, flavorful stew topped with puffy, fluffy dumplings 💜
I like this video sooo much! It's so simple and tasty! I used to try to search for Chinese vegan dumpling fillings, but they just use over complicated ingredients or cannot be seriously vegan. I am so satisfied watching this video!

Hi Satoshi and Shinichi good to see you guy's thanks for sharing stay safe God BLESS to all of u
Thank you very much for sharing this recipe. You have inspired me to try and make this, I need to find some gyosa wraps in our local market now.😊
My grandmother ate raw garlic and onion everyday. :-)
okay these look awesome! now im starving
I love your recipe videos! Can you make Chicken Doria? Is it ドリア? I think it is a Japanese/ western/ french fusion dish? Great work on all the cooking videos and I love you guys live stream! So much fun!
They looked so yummy! When I win the Lottery, I'm coming to Japan and hiring you guys as my personal chefs and tour guides ❤
Thank you for that video! I'm Vegan and it helped me so mutch
