  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth demo review:
    They fixed the combat! I think this is the best combat system of all time in an action rpg. Yeah, even better than Star Ocean 6. I hate admitting it.

    • @darrel7493
      @darrel7493 4 місяці тому

      I don't think this will have the padding remake did. this has a lot more locations and story to go through. But yeah, remake had ridiculous padding. Why did we need two chapters just to get to the second reactor?

      I'm worried about low quality quests like the first remake had. I don't want to kill rats for a shopkeeper after committing an act of eco terrorism...

      @upon-fe2720 4 місяці тому

      I really don't think there's too much padding, a lot of the stuff I think they actually think is good but is just shit. Japanese game devs are trying to emulate some of the greatness seen in other PS exclusives titles like TLoU, Uncharted, Horizon and GoW but they just can't come close and it ends up being dull, sewers 2 with the second Abzu fight was definitely padding-ish but it was also a fun fight and the section is done in about 10-15 mins.
      Had the same issue with FF16, it almost felt like they were actively trying to waste my time. It's like they're trying to make everything aesthetically pleasing instead of functional. They're very much struggling with balancing a gamey game with a story game. Ff7 is my favourite game so I hope it doesn't end up being horrendous, I think the bar has gone down a bit to Rebirth, too unfortunately. Animations seem to be more muted in cutscenes, I think with Rebirth we're going to see a major shift towards quantity over quality that will effect absolutely everything.
      I find it astounding that the Demo looks so atrocious on my 60 inch tv. It honestly looks like I'm trying to look at things with Vaseline on my glasses. Migraine inducing. I fired up Remake afterwards just to compare and it was night and day, Remake has twice the graphical fidelity and runs smooth as butter. This kind of lack of expertise, care and time is why FF's always fall short of GOTY and why Rebirth may fall short of GOTY this year too. It's unacceptable.

      @@user-il9qo4qc4n I didn't really mind those quests.The purpose wasn't just too fill out the game. It was designed too make Cloud feel like part of the community, and give the player more of an attachment to the slums, instead of just going into the sector and shortly leave.it highlighted Cloud's character of just making his way in the world, and seeing Avalanche as only a job. Yeah we can expect more of that in Rebirth. The purpose is too give life too each area, and get us know each town better.
      It was the long route to the second reactor that annoyed me. It was two chapters, added little too the story, and seemed to go on forever.

      @nathanstrik 4 місяці тому

      Yeah, the blatant filler on display in just this demo alone, convinced me the full game will be a waste of time for me. I played the first one and hated those parts of it. So I'm glad I saved my money. I honestly wish everyone who has fun with all this stuff a great time, because it looks extraordinary, but I just can't be bothered with the re-imagined FF7 games anymore.

    If you are right and they changed that, this ABSOLUTELY becomes the best action RPG game system of all time.
    If that stupid "aggro the person being controlled" thing is still in there, then Dragon's Dogma (and soon to be Dragon's Dogma 2) still holds that spot.

    • @SolaceAndDread

      I think there's certain enemies that will always target the player. Like the rock guys that swing their weapon around. those really only work well if it targets the player. but the other mobs, not needed.

      @SolaceAndDread  4 місяці тому +1

      the point of the limping is to help the player experience the helplessness and chaos of the situation.
      it just didn't need to be so damn slow. and then make you walk back around lmao.

      @@SolaceAndDread Yeah, I thought the limping was a bit *too* slow. You can have him limping, but did it need to be such a long sequence? So much of it is things just burning around you without anything happening.

      @@SolaceAndDread I often find myself grinning from ear-to-ear. I could have done without some of the padding; just feels like busy-work. I wish the limit gauge carried over between battles. Really, any gripes I have are so minor in comparison to what the game does do.
      No worries, a year from now, we can all collectively replay Remake/Rebirth. I don't often replay games anymore...but FF7 is one I can't help but pick up every so often.

    I have no interest in FFVII. My love for the VIIverse died the moment Square tricked me into buying Dirge of Cerberus. But I was very curious to hear your thoughts on the presentation.

      Yeah, Dirge was a serious oof and a half. But how much better they've used those elements in Intermission at least gives me hope that they understand they screwed up and will do better. Don't know if they will/should ever remake it but I am hopeful for the future of these remakes being better than Dirge, at least.

  • @victorwonder
    @victorwonder 4 місяці тому

    Since you asked, here are my thoughts.
    IMO, there was nothing to fix. Remake's combat was perfect. Rebirth just improved upon it (judging from the demo - will have to reserve judgment on game release), as any sequel should.
    The aggro being focused on the player was a good development choice too IMO. The player having companions is a really hard thing to balance in action games. It's quite different from having companions in turn-based combat where the player controls the whole party. Remake/Rebirth tries to simulate that feeling of controlling the whole party with on-the-fly character-switching. Enemies should be focusing on the player controlled character - the main threat. The AI controlled characters should be a secondary target. It's why players were given options (in the form of materia) to have non-controlled characters able to attract aggro, take less damage, etc.

    • @SolaceAndDread
      @SolaceAndDread  4 місяці тому

      Star Ocean and Tales games both did it better (until now)
      that's why most Action RPG's have aggro tables. This has been a common practice since 2000's. It made the game cheeseable. They fixed it forcing the player to be more strategic. This is better.
      They KNEW it was bad and thus it was changed. You shouldn't be able to kite a boss around at the flick of a switch.

  • @alexandrebrochu4265
    @alexandrebrochu4265 4 місяці тому +1

    Soooo... they didn't fix the combat afterall? You are saying it's fixed and the more you talk about the more it seems it is not. And you finish with "in some cases it's fixed" which is exactly what was in the first game. In some cases, the monsters didn't hard aggro your controlled character.

    • @SolaceAndDread
      @SolaceAndDread  4 місяці тому

      There's enemies that legit don't work unless they target the player. Like the rock monster you have to party. Should have clarified.

    • @skins4thewin
      @skins4thewin 4 місяці тому +2

      The combat was always perfectly fine. It's up to the player to learn it's nuances. Just cus you're not good enough of a player to do so doesn't mean it's the games fault. It's likely your fault, not the game's.

  • @skins4thewin
    @skins4thewin 4 місяці тому

    Just came here to say there was nothing wrong w the combat to begin with...
    Maybe you just weren't good enough to comprehend it? It had it's own nuances you had to learn, but once you got good you can literally have ATB bars ready to go at ALL times!
