- A Grand Rapids restaurant closed their doors in the middle of one of their busiest days, after the owner said they could no longer handle the way they were being treated some of their customers.
"It wasn't an easy decision, but I think it was the right decision," said Steven Martinez, the owner of Basalt.

Kudos to this owner. I think he did the right thing. This epidemic of entitlement really needs to stop and people need to learn that this type of behavior is unacceptable in society. I like an owner or a manager who takes care of their workers and puts them first instead of bending over backwards for these rude customers. You should never ever reward bad behavior.
Lol. The criminal won.
@@theresa8843 huh?
Good for him. Mean people suck.
Agreed. Food service industry workers have had it horrible lately. Maybe we should close every restaurant in the country for a week to teach people to be more appreciative of the services they take for granted. People wanna act like children, they can be treated like children.
^i totally agree

This is what has happened after DECADES of retail/restaurant managers training customers to behave like this. For years, it has been, “The customer is always right,” even when the customer is completely wrong and acting like an asshole. They’ve been trained over time to believe that the louder and nastier they act, the bigger of a discount they’ll receive. People know that if they pitch a fit, the manager will give them discounts/freebies to make them leave. The only way forward is to stop the cycle by kicking them out and not giving them a damn thing.
Say Hello. Amen to that.
You hit that one out of the park! That's exactly what's been going for years
They’re not ready for this convo though! 💯💯
So basically adults are overgrown toddlers who throw temper tantrums to get what they want because they’re the cUsToMeR. -_-
“The customer is always right” was started by Harrod’s Department Store in London back in 1909. It was supposed to mean “Don’t judge the customer for their choice in purchases or fashion style”, not “The customer can be an abusive entitled bully”.
You never hear that anymore; that it’s ok to stand up for yourself. What a great business owner!
As a healthcare provider, it’s getting worse. People are losing their minds.
An epidemic of entitlement is accurate ✨
My question is how in the fuck does ANYONE think like these assholes? Have they always been lurking in the shadows quietly seething in their need to feel special and make an entire restaurant worth of peoples meals about them? I would NEVER yell or be abusive toward someone in the service industry. The worst I've ever treated an absolutely horrid server was by only tipping them the BARE MINIMUM OF 15%. That's it. I didn't complain to their boss. I didn't confront them or make a scene. I tipped them the bare minimum and went on my way STILL feeling mildly bad that I didn't tip them more. I have eaten the entirely wrong entrée many times instead of sending them back unless they were something I couldn't eat or would never order. But I always do even that with respect and honor for the people working their asses off to give me/us a pleasant meal. I cannot fathom this kind of lunacy, I simply can't understand it.
More and more reasons to finally terminate the 'customer is always right' slogan. It has done nothing but make people in the service industry miserable!
The customer is always right is a myth
The phrase was never “the customer is always right” they just shortened it to make it look good for them. The phrase is “the customer is always right, IN MATTERS OF TASTE”
Damn...BE NICE PEOPLE! And respectful. People in the food/hospitality industry work hard. And yes he's right...People nowadays think they're just 'entitled' to be rude & say whatever they want . Ofcourse you expect healthy criticism or unhappy customers, but some people just get wayyy out of hand. Let's just at least TRY & be nice to each other. Life is too short.☮
I would gladly work for this guy, now that is a business leader. There's a difference between a leader, and a commander. I worked behind a corporate retail chain counter for 5 years, and worked many shifts by myself, no manager or asst. manager around. There was a constant trickle of so called customers, who through their displays of entitlement and abuse, had me always wanting to quit, turn the lights out, walk out, lock the door and throw the store keys up on the roof. And this was before Covid. It convinced me I would never work a customer facing job again, no matter what the pay offered. Having your soul stomped on every day is just plain not worth it, at any price.
Wow! What happened to everyone saying
thank you for your service during the Pandemic?
This gentleman is a awesome boss!
This is the absolute worst society I have ever witnessed on this earth!
The entitlement is repugnant!
Majority of individuals walk around with this "Wrong and strong" disgusting attitude!
Not to worry nor fear; God will start humbling all of those miscreants!
The owner really stepped up. Plenty of owners would just continue to feed the employees to the dogs, and then wonder why all the employees quit.
What an amazing boss. I’m so sick of customers being assholes.
It’s like people don’t have respect for others anymore and it’s disgusting.
We need to stop coddling these trash humans. They've had no consequences for too long. Do it for your customers. Do it for your employees.
Any of us that have worked in food, retail or service know its bad. Some of these people are damn right abusive and will do things like review bomb you or dammage your property for some percieved injustice. Its usually stupid things such as not selling what they want.
The sad part is, people misinterpret and abuse this saying All THE TIME!!
“The customer is always right, in matters of taste.” That's the ACTUAL quote. All that means is if the customer wants to buy a hat you think is ugly, that's fine, let them buy the ugly hat. "The customer is always right" has never meant you, as a customer, are always right.
The customer is always right is a myth
The customer is NOT always right!
The customer is rarely right. 🥴
Correct 🙂👍🏻
If you've ever done rideshare or anything that involves extensive interactions with people, you empathize with them completely.
As in, you understand why they act like dicks and think their hard day at the office gives them the room to destroy someone else’s day? I hope I’m misunderstanding your comment.
So many rude and entitled customers who think they can pay someone a few dollars and that means they should be worshipped 🙄. There really should be an a**hole tax.
Those few dollars add up when many are waiting to spend those few dollars.
It takes years before these kinds of places turn any profit and the profit usually isn't much.
Sorry but if the staff cannot handle rude customers, then they are working in the wrong industry. Dealing with rude customers is part of customer service.
@@drakecarter1780 I worked in the service industry in many different jobs for almost 30 years as a cashier at 13, then a waitress (16-25) bar tender (17-25) and then in childcare (24 until now) and some people just take customer entitlement too far. There is a certain standard of treatment that should be given to everyone no matter what job a person has - screaming at, name calling, assault and worse should not be common treatment for anyone let alone the young people who often do these jobs. Its about time businesses stand up and refuse to serve these entitled people, customers don’t want to be around these types of people ether.
Good on the owner. Way to many customers feel they can say and do w/e they want.
because we can we're not in china or russia
Be nice to eachother please! We are all human! Thank you for taking care of yourself and your staff Sir!🙏🏾♥️💕
Will be stopping by for dinner. Thanks for caring for your staff!
Everyone is so angry lately. People here in America don't realize how good we all have it. We basically won the lottery being born here. Ungrateful swine...
This disgusting attitude is rampant across the west. Spoiled brats of all age groups that think interacting with humans should be like a movie.
Kudos to this guy! All employers should do the same and I will bet you that we all be more productive in our jobs. Nowadays some people justifies the criminals narcissistic and nasty behavior and make them feel like victims…we all have problems in our lives! Let’s be kind to each other. And government leaders PLEASE IMPLEMENT THE LAW AND ORDER!!
Wow,you made a great statement. Our society needs to remember respect is a two way street in life in ALL situations
Stealing mobile orders 🙄
Total dirtbags!
Yeah, it sucks for so many reasons. The restaurant loses money, and then when the real customer shows up and their food isn’t ready, they get angry at the restaurant staff.
Not sure how you steal a mobile order. Only a douchebag would do that and they aren't a customer. They are a thief.
@@zeldasmith6154 While cutting off a thief's hand sounds harsh, I understand the reasoning behind it.
We forget that breakthroughs are made by going against the grain. Everyone will think you’re crazy but you’re doing the right thing.
It’s about time someone takes a stand against being treated like crap. I wish more businesses would follow suit. This owner is awesome!!! That’s a huge problem in most of west Michigan and people claim their just straight shooters, but I think they just say that as a really lame excuse to be rude and entitled and get away with it. I was born in Grand Rapids and have spent most of my life in west Michigan. It was like that even before the pandemic. I go to other states and people are like “ oh yea I heard about those people “ and not in a good way. It’s embarrassing to be from Michigan.
I’m glad ppl are noticing that something changed in ppl after the pandemic. The orneriness and volatility is absolutely RIDICULOUS these days.
All you customers out there are not GODS over the people who serve you. It’s pathetic how customers act like they’re all high and mighty and make the employees of retail stores and restaurants feel small.
Disgusting how these people are treated, I'm ashamed of many American citizens.
What a sad pathetic country we are. Absolutely deplorable
Don’t close just serve them from outside.
I’m working at a juice bar for a holiday job. I’ve got Karens, wannabe influencers, and yuppies screaming at me because we’re out of the flavor that someone wanted or we ran out of wheat grass. It’s gonna be a long holiday.
Damn that’s tough. The man has principles, it’s sad to see him giving up income because of some bad apples.
He should stay open and throw out only the bad apples……..
“NO SOUP FOR YOU”!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Best comment ever!!!!!
😂👍🏻
Great boss!! Kudos to him taking care of his employees!!
I think that was the right decision for the owner to close down the restaurant.
Shouldn't customers feel they deserve what they bargain for when paying their money to you?
It's sad that all these people are so busy treating people like crap they have lost their humanism. Makes you wonder if their parents allowed this type of behavior at home, or if they were taught this was acceptable behavior during CRT indoctrination. The 2020 Summer of Love was the beginning of a whole new mentality trying to dominate society.
You are projecting. crt huh ? bot boy. it's the white privilege/elitist $$$$ folks that made him close. No Manners No Morals No Accountability
thank you
I believe every word this man is saying is true. However one sound idea in my opinion is giving your staff that has been with you for at least a year the authority to expel people from the restaurant if need be. This will help employees have some more dignity and say in their treatment if necessary.
We're not coming back from this. There will be four areas. Black, White, Asian, Hispanic. Birds of a feather flock together.
Look here, I know pay is most peoples motivation but sorry me, I’ll work 3 side gigs that treat me with the respect and care that this owner has rather than one place that pays well but expecta me to be an emotional punching bag for customers and management. EASILY. Kudos to that owner and I would love to visit his restaurant if I’m ever in the area.
Remember when everyone got a trophy…..
Now theres an entitlement problem?
Who are these customers? Ethnicity?
Are those pans rusty? 1:17
What if this is a Karen prank from all the real Karens...
That's fine. I have dozens of other options.
You're part of the problem.

It was mentioned at the start of the news report: Grand Rapids (Michigan).

I don't think we're getting the whole story here.
You're right, people are always awesome and perfect.
@@timtebowfan628 I'm glad you agree with my sarcasm that people are always awesome and don't try to go behind the counters and threaten employees. The customer has carte blanche to do whatever right? Because they're being provided a service they have the right to treat you how ever they want. Instead of finding a new career he can just shut down till people learn how to be decent.
@@timtebowfan628 Yeah, he needs to find an industry where people can shit in his face and his pushback will be crushed by upper management. 🙄 That’ll teach him.
They should come work in the hood with me. They'd be in tears.

This restaurant will be closed in 24 months.
Nobody's going to care. They're going to go down the street and get another taco At the place that's open😢
1 word...Democrats
Exactly, Republicans are all racists. We need more Democrats, a blue tsunami!!!🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
What about them? In my experience of working in retail and food service from high school through grad school, the asshat customers were often the ones wearing American flag tee-shirts and complaining about their “right” to yell at us, the good ole boys who’d make condescending comments like, “You workin hard to hardly working? Hahaha!” The crowd who’d come in after church were the worst of the worst. When I was working at a restaurant, those were the customers who’d roll in at 12:15, complain about everything from how many ice cubes were in their drink to the price of the food, and then leave me their $0.68 of change and a chit tract.
@@sayhello5377 Their president tells them to expect government to pay for their college, you can't be surprised they feel entitled to everything..The more you give them, the more they expect you to keep it going or they get angry. I live with and around alot of Democrats, so I know their superiority complex first hand
1 Word …. NOPE
People should be nice to their servants. And yes, 1:50 - They are paying a lot of money to be waited on so you actually ARE servants. You joined a service based industry; this doesn't give them the right to be terrible to you.
Servers, not servants. A server provides drinks and food, transactional services for goods or intangibles. A servant works for a primary director or master. These are NOT the same word and your use of the term servant is wildly inappropriate and demeaning. Check yourself.
@@DeftAtheist They do, they work for the boss and the boss delegates; ie serving others as their primary task.
@@Acecool a dictionary would be useful before you throw out insulting verbiage. That or you're a world class douchebag and look down on workers. If it's the latter, you can fuck alllll the way off.
Are you stupid or somethin?..if you make the choice to walk into a place of business you'd better practice basic business etiquette and manners because crap and straight up abuse like this isn't in their job description and should never be tolerated unless the job doesn't give 2 craps about their workers.. if customers dont have the common sense on how to conduct themselves in a business establishment then they should either act like an adult when payin for a service and have some actual common courtesy rather than an attitude of entitlement which is very sadly so so often the case these days or simply not walk in to begin with or be shown the door to go make your food at home in a microwave immediately..there are consequences for your actions in every facet of life and I applaud this worker for seeing that his workers are not abused by Ken's and Karen's like these.. basic respect is for both the customers and the employees so if you cant do that then dont go out to eat simple😒
So this is what socialism has come to.......restaurants are closing down, businesses will be closing their doors, and eventually they'll say one customer at a time way to go.
Wut?
People were acting horrible and he took action. Be better.
What on earth does this have to do with socialism? It’s his business and he can set whatever hours he wants, including shutting down when dick customers are abusing his employees. I think it’s great that he shut it down. I hope there is a big show of support on Tuesday morning. It would be nice if the big box stores would follow suit, and if every time an irate Karen started losing her mind, they would kick her out of the store without giving her a damn thing. That’s the only way this problem is going to improve.
