I started to ask people for money basically start begging for change even though I had plenty of money. When the would be attackers saw me begging for money they stopped following me.

In Paris late at night in the Latin Quarter a person I did not know came up to me and attempted to start a conversation. He seemed unusually friendly to me. The first thing I thought of was that this was an attempt to take my attention away from my surroundings. But I had read about safety. I ignored him, turning around to see someone else coming up behind me. I left immediately. I don't care if this was rude. To this day I don't know if I escaped a possible bad situation or if the guy just wanted to talk. WAY too many red flags that night.

one time i was leaving around 5am for work. i live in philly so parking is scarce lol i was walking to the corner to get to my car and i noticed someone walking across the street. he wasn't acting weird but i got a really uneasy feeling. i'm paranoid already so i have the habit of only unlocking my door and hopping in, immediately shutting the door, and then immediately locking it and thank god i do cause next thing i know he's at my door trying to get me to roll the window down and blocking me from pulling out since i was parallel parked. i know how easy it is to hear everything inside and out of my car so i knew he could hear me telling him to move and knew him acting like he couldn't hear me yelling was a lie so i just pulled out and he of course eventually moved after realizing i wasn't gonna stop for him. i would like to think he didn't have bad intentions but a grown man should never approach a woman when she's alone ESPECIALLY at hours like that and definitely shouldn't ask her to put herself in a vulnerable situation like rolling down the window for a stranger tf

As others have said, situational awareness is critical. One day I was about to park in an isolated area of a mall parking lot. I became suspicious of 2 guys sitting in their car and drove away. They sped away as I left. The next day there was a robbery in that lot. This experience bothers me over 20 years later.

One of the best tips I've heard is to spend random moments watching people acting normally, just doing day-to-day things, to train your subconscious to pick up on the subtle clues people give off when they're up to something: getting a little too close when asking for the time, taking a furtive look around as they approach you, etc. Then keep your head out of your phone (or at least look up/around every few seconds) and pay attention to your surroundings.

There's a really common grift in NYC where someone asks you for your cell phone to make a call and.... Yeah I actually have no idea what they're plan is, but it seems like it's something other than a simple snatch and run, since it's always well-to-do looking panhandlers running it. I once had a more sophisticated actor loudly complaining about how he needed to make a call and then "ask me the time" to try and get me to take my cell phone out, but I had a watch so he couldn't even act like I was being rude.

    • @sammosaurusrex

Oh I actually just googled it and it's to try and subscribe you to a paid service they get commission from, then deleting the subscription text so you don't immediately realize you're being charged. Wow, neat little scam. They're always running it in these dense areas with cops nearby where a snatch and run just doesn't seem feasible/sustainable, bet it makes some people let their guards down a little.

REAL SELF DEFENSE has nothing to do with techniques/competition or awards/styles/athleticism or fitness/belt color or rank/school or lineage/masters or instructors/machismo or courage (WILL to survive is another matter). Real self defense is about adopting TACTICS and correct BEHAVIOR by the organ in between your ears in 3 stages; pre-actual-post conflict.

I grew in a working class tough community near and in Hull and got into scrapes and more all the time from a young age. The best advice is to have situational awareness and a calm confidence. A quiet non confrontational confidence helps a lot as muggers or those who look for victims (a kid out of place in a gangland area) can see and sense this. It helps if you know you can actually back your confidence up if needed. A classic recent example happened as I walked to my car in a car park. I had noticed a person walking behind me a little too close and I immediately sensed his focus was on me. I continued to walk towards my car whilst keeping aware of where this person was (watching shadows, half turning around pretending to scratch my arm). Any mugger that is not stupid will realize you are on to them and that alone may put them off; as a streetwise person is often not an easy victim. In my case I saw him getting closer out of the corner of my eye as I approached my car. I swiftly turned around looked him in the eye and asked him 'are you alright mate!!'. As I did this I was in a good position to fight and was showing no nerves at all. He walked by knowing that he was in for a fight that he did not want with a person who could probably handle themselves. The thing is for most people, basically be aware and plan a way out. If it feels odd it probably is. Oh and as is said in the video if you cannot fight and win then do not even consider violence.

For the ladies you should always be really careful when you're about to get in your car make sure nobody's coming up around you or getting too close to you who might try to force you in your own car in an abduction .
Also should you ever find yourself in that regrettable situation you're actually better off trying to fight the person there.. making a lot of noise ..attracting attention even at the risk of getting shot or stabbed..
The reason is and all the experts have said this, is that once they force you to drive to a more desolate place is where you're really going to have a problem with them.. if you're at least on the street or in a parking lot ..your chances are better .

If a person is too close in distance and seems dangerous , just start screaming as loud as you can and don't open doors to house or car cause is better for the bad guy inside where no one hears you . When it's late and there aren't many people around, always keep an eye out to who's approaching you. If someone's coming toward, switch the side of the street, unless they look harmless. If someone asks you a question or tries to talk to you, don't answer, just ignore them, keep moving but keep an eye on them. If they start running you start running.

Where exactly in Boston? I (F) go to college in the middle of the city and would spend hours walking by myself without even mace.

@@sarcasticismyname1163 yeah, I walked everywhere and mostly felt safe... except for the walk that I had to take home every evening from my school ( SMFA) to my Apartment ( Mass ave /Boylston) - from MFA, around the Fens path. It was the mid 1980’s, during the height of the crack epidemic. Unfortunately that drug spawned a huge amount of desperate people who would do anything for a fix.
Many students at my school got mugged - or worse- during the four years I was there. At some point, the administration of the school recommended that students carry mace.
Other than that daily route, I walked everywhere in the Boston/Cambridge area... mostly feeling 100% safe. ( with some notable exceptions)
I absolutely love that city- it’s my family’s home city ( they are south shore folks) and even though it’s been 30 years since I’ve lived there, I still consider Boston to be my home.
      Love that dirty water

In fact, I just visited! My son and I Rode a blue bikes all over Back Bay and the Fens…showing my now college age son “my world” from my college days. Those bikes are great- we had a blast- the highlight of the trip!

I always walk around on my phone saying, "do you think they'll find the body? I mean I chopped it up pretty good".

You just walk around constantly saying this over and over with your phone pressed to your ear? Good plan lol
Would be downright hilarious when your phone starts ringing because someone actually phones you 😂
I get you were joking but still couldn’t help pointing out the flaws.

A young man tried to rob me one morning as I walked to the bus stop..I saw him walking real fast behind me so as he approached me I abruptly turned around & ran in the opposite direction away from him...As I ran away he stopped & watched me as i ran away from him..

Listening to this i may have been potentially almost mugged a few times. Living in a city ive had a few encounters with weird dudes, one time i was out late at night coming home from a concert. I was waiting on the bus on a busy but dark street and this guy on the other side asked me what street we were on. I was nervous but told him, even though there was literally a street sign right there. He claimed he couldn't hear me then asked if he could come to the side of the street i was on, told him sure and he came, but luckily my bus also came right around that time and i was able to get away from him. Dont know what was going on but.
Then another time i was waiting on the train, it was getting dark, but there were people around, noticed these two guys, thought one of them was cute, but they looked suspicious as well, so maybe i was glancing at them every so often. Well they walked up to me and asked for the time. I told them and then they walked away. Dont know what was going on there.
And then this final time it was broad daylight, i was walking on a busy street, this weirdo in his car just slowed down next to me and gestured to me to come here, i rolled my eyes and kept walking and he just drove off. I've also had an experience where i was waiting on the bus and these two guys stopped at a stop light called out to me and asked me to follow them on Instagram, i played along but i did not follow them, or either unfollowed them right after, maybe this one was harmless.
Again dont know if i was in danger in any of these situations, but they all happened in the same year so it was pretty freaky to me.
