I never expected it to get this much love when I started the project back then, it was great to see Cereth and Maff pick up the torch! Cereth and I met at an RPG Limit Break event too. Thanks for the shoutout, and the massive nostalgia trip! In a crazy coincidence, I'm playing through FFX on stream just this week again, although this time it's not for speed. RBM alerted me to this video, thanks for putting this together! Something I would like to add regarding the character selection: Shinryu is a huge bottleneck since four characters are unable to participate. So among Tidus, Rikku, and Wakka, two had to be in the final party. That was a bigger consideration than Rikku's Mixes. And since Wakka's World Champion is awful to get, it had to be Tidus and Rikku.
I love that for the final boss, they're using the longest, flashiest overdrive to kill it in one hit, Blitz ace. it only has 99999 HP, so one regular max whack is all it needs, but nope, it needs to be STYLED on.
The 20 hour Malboro ambush is a rite of passage for any Nemesis runner. Everyone has it happen to them, and everyone has it happen when they neglect to save before Sin.
I never finished FFX. I saved before Sin but saved over a single slot and my stats were never good enough to finish him. So, I could either replay the whole game or just give up ... I chose the latter. It's been so long since I played FFX that I don't remember anything from it and this second playthrough is something I'm looking forward to.
Marlboro? wow this game is older than i thought (but seriously they did try to sponsor video games in the early 90s and 80s but i am sure they stopped in the ps2 years )
A boon and a curse in ff10 speedruns are unskippable cutscenes. While they add HOURS to the final time, they give time for some much needed bathroom breaks or donation announcements in bigger events.
There is a mod to skip them, at least on PC, which is also used in the speedrunning scene. But yeah, pros and cons. Might be nice to keep the cutscenes for events.
I don't understand it, it's listed as Nemesis % but he already has a time split for defeating Nemesis - the run is complete. Furthermore, why is he walking around inside Sin/inside the nucleus with **NO** protection from a Marlboro bad breath ambush - literally the most dangerous encounter in the entire area by a massive margin and the only thing worth protecting from ahead of time?
@@Milktubebecause the speed run is to beat nemesis AND the game and I imagine preparing for Marlboros takes time. I appreciate the fact that the video for why a speedrun is over 19 hours long is just over 19 minutes long. Or at least, 19:01 when I clicked the video but exactly 19:00 when watching.
Beating Nemesis in such a short time is absolutely wild in my eyes, don't know if I had Incredibly bad luck but capturing the monsters alone took me way over 20 hours, not to mention beating the game first and grinding the other stuff.
Because the game’s RNG has been mapped, the current records have manipulated encounters for capturing monsters. Everything is extremely deliberate, and efficient. The capturing was cut down by about 10 hours alone. So you aren’t crazy bad, you just don’t have the tools to cut the fat.
Monster capturing is the crux of the run. There's always at least one enemy that's found in a super specific location. Speedrunners know the location, most people just randomly run around for hrs just to find 3 of em
The Twilight Princess speedrun where you leave Link staring at rupees for like 16 hours is still one of the most absurdly funny things I've ever heard.
Tbf some of these games have average playtimes between 20 and 100 hours, so depending the game 19 hours could be considered "fast", specially for 100% runs

Amazing game, abysmal endgame. This was the start of the ultra grindy gameplay that creeped its way into the series..its not the fun grind the other games were.
The real strongest entity in all of Final Fantasy is the monster arena owner in FFX. How does this guy keep these creatures 10x stronger than Sin locked up. lol
I think for long runs like these, it's really interesting to think about the incentives to find big time cuts/execution improvements because it LITERALLY makes it less demanding physically to do. It's a self-incentivizing circle!
I remember struggling with the later Dark Aeons like Dark Anima and hearing US players saying they could probably beat all the Dark Aeons, they were really strong and could beat anyone because they'd defeated Nemesis.

Ironically, the method of using characters with max strength and agility stats, all with Break Damage and Break HP Limit and Break MP Limit and Auto-Haste abilities, plus everyone having Quick Hit and Auto-Life, to beat Nemesis easily within a few dozen turns and he barely does anything to you? I figured that out entirely on my own! XD I just had this thought about landing hit after hit on him before he could attack, and since it didn't matter what attack he used on you because they would all instnat kill charactesr, I realized what I had to focus on. Didn't realize the speed runs of FF10 were so long till I saw this video. Do I remember exactly how long I was playing, no but I know it was somewhere close to 48 hours. I know I passed out shortly after the credits started. For the record this was back during the first year of the US release of the PS2 version.
The entirely biggest problem with final fantasy 10 is one single issue when it comes to speed running and that's you can't skip the fucking cutscenes and I don't know why they did that Even in the remaster. Such a stupid idea
Do people really give this Johan guy credit for inventing the triple overdrive and stoic mechanic to max out your party quickly? Seemed like that was pretty common knowledge back in 2001 myself and everyone I knew did that trick except it was against the Cactuar's 100,000 needles instead of the tonberry.
I get mastering one or two games to speed run. But these guys do multiple games and practice like crazy. I couldn’t do it. Like a no hit run fail at the last moment I’ll lose my mind .

For the record this was back during the first year of the US release of the PS2 version.
God damn. It took me like 3 years to beat ffx. Tbh I was a pretty dumb kid 😂
@@AB-ee5tb I was basically dead to the world for nearly a full day after that. I would not recommend anyone do what I did.
12:00 and that mob is why I have at least one character with confusion immunity but preferably just the ribbon ability.
Aye why it look like Riku is missing teeth at 5:38?🤣🤣 looks hella goofy😂
my 5th time in the ps2 version, got lucky and yojimbo pulled through against nemesis :)
I alway's forget to farm the sin in the beginning to get max level.
A game I never finished because I couldnt stop playing Blitzball. I went full Blitzball manager on it :D
The entirely biggest problem with final fantasy 10 is one single issue when it comes to speed running and that's you can't skip the fucking cutscenes and I don't know why they did that Even in the remaster. Such a stupid idea

I love the Legend of the Dragoon music!

I enjoy FFX mechanics and really hope we get another like it.
I even wrote up a fangame idea for one!
Final Fantasy CID
(Every Cid!)
XD
Do people really give this Johan guy credit for inventing the triple overdrive and stoic mechanic to max out your party quickly? Seemed like that was pretty common knowledge back in 2001 myself and everyone I knew did that trick except it was against the Cactuar's 100,000 needles instead of the tonberry.
Unrelated but I super appreciate you showing the song title in the video!
5:15
That's right!
Tie-dus...the real pronunciation!!!
Using LoD's Royal Castle OST was a great idea!
I get mastering one or two games to speed run. But these guys do multiple games and practice like crazy. I couldn’t do it. Like a no hit run fail at the last moment I’ll lose my mind .
