If you’re coming from a new garbage disposal make sure you are taking out the drain plug from your garbage disposal. I was wondering why it was doing this.
Great advice Jerry😊😊😊
Thanks! I didn't know the inner cap could be pulled out of the air gap from the top.
Also, thanks for making a "quick fix" video that isn't 17 minutes long!
1000% AGREED
Thank you! Fixed my leaking Air Gap in about 5 mins or less. You definitely saved me a plumber’s bill.

Thanks Scott, just fixed it at midnight! I saw another video where they removed the drain hose and I wasn't feeling like tackling that so late in the night. Very glad I came across your video with the very straightforward fix!
Thank you for your help! It pushed me in the right direction. I couldn't get anything out by snaking the air gap's drain hose, didn't try sticking my hand in the disposal because I was too paranoid lol. But what I did do was put a funnel in the air gap drain, pour in baking soda, white vinegar, and it did erupt a few times but eventually i heard the sound of something moving and then draining. for good measure i poured down boiling water, which it was able to drain successfully.
Good idea Matthew
Chug a Bud Light every time he says “disposer”. 😆
😂😂😂😂
I'm so glad you provided this video! I was blaming the excess water on the sink and behind the faucet on my kids and wife thinking that they were getting water on the counter top from rinsing the dishes! LOL!!! Everything you provided in the video was spot on! Thank you! You have a new subscriber now too!
Thanks so much David👍
I came across many videos on this subject, but this one did the trick for us. I had shoulder surgery and I couldn’t really get in there and tackle this problem and my wife had already called a plumber. Thanks to your video you saved the day for us. I was able to fix it exactly how you did and with one arm lol. Thank you so much.

It’s just $5.00
OMG! This 100% solved my issue in only a few seconds. I have been cleaning the top one many times but not once did I try the lower outlet. Only took one pass and it was free flowing! Awesome! Thanks!
I love it❤️😊👍
It worked! I can't imagine what the folks that put in the thumbs down are about- hahaha! It took me less than 10 minutes beginning to end. Thank you so much!
Thanks Patty,
Nice job😊
They may have put thumbs down because the solutions in this video do not apply to all situations. I’ve done everything shown in this video and there was no clog and the overflow has not eased up at all. So I guess I’m experiencing a different issue.
Thank you so much for you help!!!! Easy to follow instructions made it easy to fix our issues!!!!
Awesome,
Thanks Brandy❤️😊👍
Appreciate the quick and clear explanation. This has been annoying me all week. Now I can fix it!
I purchased the model home and have had plumbers come in for multiple reasons only for plumbing in every shower, bathroom sink leaking and now the air flow leaking!!! Thanks to your video I watched it at 1:03 am and by 1:20am I had my dishwasher draining properly, great thanks to you I not only saved money on plumbers but didn’t need to be home for their visit.
Thanks Martha, nice job😊👍
Thank you! You're a good guy for posting this for the UA-cam community.
Glad to help😊😊😊
Thank you so much. After performing the exact thing you did, I finally fixed the problem. I can finally use my dishwasher after 5 months of this issue. I was very close to calling a plumber!
Very cool 😊
Short. To the point. Told me exactly what I needed and ten minutes later (had to improvise a coat hanger snake) my problem solved! Excellent.
Score yourself ten bonus points. Do not pass GO! Do not collect $200.
Awesome,
Thank you😊
Thank you. It was my garbage disposal "gunk". Took a couple times, but it's working correctly now. Thanks for posting this fix it.
Very cool👍👍👍
This video is fantastic. Everything worked just like you said. Took that crap out of the garbage disposal hole and now it drains properly. The smell we had is gone too! Thanks so much.
Thanks so much😊
This just helped us out a LOT today. Thanks for a clear, easy explanation!
You’re most welcome
Problem solved!!! Thank you so much for this pro tip
You’re very welcome Julia😊👍
Thank you so much!!! I fixed mine in 5 minutes! So grateful for this video!
Awesome,
Thanks so much Brandy❤️😊👍
Thank you soooo much for this video and explanation!!! For the past 3 years, everytime we ran the dishwasher, water would come up through the vent tube and cause a leak underneath the sink. I never knew that the tube was designed for venting only and thought it was an overflow feature if too much water was being draind. I tried everything to contain the leak: tightening the tighteners, new gasket, plumbers tape, plumbers putty, etc etc...nothing worked! I've always noticed a huge kink in the black tubing but never thought that it would cause any issue since I figured water could easily flow through the small bottleneck. Boy was I wrong!! While trying to fix the leak again tonight, I stumbled across your video and immediately squeezed the kink to open up the tubing while the dishwasher was draining and immediately the overflow stopped. No more water on top which means no more leak on the bottom. Thank you soooo much!!!
As a more permanent fix, I wrapped cloth around the tubing and put an automotive clamp around the kinked area to keep it open to allow for proper water flow. The cloth is mainly to protect the tubing since the sides of the clamp are sharp and could potentially cut the tubing so it was just an added precaution that I took.
Thank you again!!
Very impressive , thank you
Thanks SO much for this clear, simple and ultimately helpful video! Worked like a charm.
You’re welcome👍
Thanks for all this information. I have a very nasty odor that is
probably coming from my drain hose. I tried the foaming disposal
cleaner, but no luck. Last time this happened, my appliance repairman
pulled the black drain hose off at both ends and scrubbed it out (quite
nasty). This worked great for about a year, but it is once again
smelling bad. I am so relieved to learn that there are two clean out
options from the TOP side. I am a senior and too old, stiff, and chubby
to be able to access anything from underneath the sink. Your video
will save me a much needed $90 (assuming of course that I can stand to
look at all that black rotting gunk).
I'd like to share a fix for
the flattened hose. My hose likes to flatten out at the bend where it
attaches to the disposal. The disposal is put in at a funny angle
(front facing the back of the cabinet), and it looks like the hose
should have been cut 2-3" longer. I used hose clamps to round out the
hose. Unscrew them all the way open to get them around the hose, and
then just tighten the clamp until the hose is round again. Just don't
over tighten to avoid cutting into the hose. The first time, one did
the trick, but this time I needed to add two more. At some point, I
will have my guy replace the hose.
Yep,
The hose clamps is a great way to get the hose round again.
Awesome! I used an electric cord to free any obstructions. Worked and now draining like it should! Love UA-cam !!
Good idea😊
Thanks 🙏🏼 Im sure one of these options should fix my problem
Should work well,
Please let us know how it goes😊
Thank you, I tried your fix and it worked....saved me money and time
Great,
Thank you
I am so grateful for your site - I cleaned out the gunk and voila! fixed!
Thanks so much Deborah😊
O man this worked, thank you so much for this video. The center tube was clogged on mine but this video helped me a lot.
Excellent,
Thanks so much
Thanks, I was able to get mine unclogged from the hole inside my garbage disposer, just like you did on the video, and that worked. I didn't have to take off the black pipe, Thanks, that saved me a plumber call.
Thanks for posting.
You’re welcome 👍
Awesome! Thank you so much! You probably just saved me $300. ☺️
I will try to fix it later. Thank you for this video.
How did it go?
Thank you very much. It’s help me a lot. I try many way to fix the problem but it not work but your video is fix my problem. Thank you. God bless you.
You’re very welcome 🙏😊
This did the trick for me! Haven't used our dishwasher in years (don't ask lol), and finally wanted to give it a try. Started leaking all over the sink.
Ended up popping the cap off, and snaking it. Didn't see any discernible difference, so I tried the approach from the sink drain itself, which worked! Thank you so much.
Awesome,
So glad it worked😊😊😊
Seriously just did this in 5 minutes! 😊 thanks
Nice job Valerie😊😊😊
Thank you. By following your instructions , I cleared up the hose at the disposer end, and it stopped the water from coming from the Air Gap.
I’m So Proud Of You😊👍
Thank you. Water was going all over the place until I looked at your video, it was driving me crazy. My issue was inside the disposer.
Nice job David👍
Thank you so much. I was wondering why this thing started spitting water everywhere and all it took was an unraveled coat hanger to take care of it.
That is Awesome 😊
I watched your video and succeeded. Thank you.
Thanks Ellen👍
Great video worked like a charm!!

There is just something so satisfying in removing a clogged drain. 😆 🤣
Thank you very much for showing very clearly the way how to fix it.
I had this exact problem and was able to fix it by snaking the drain hose from the dishwasher where it attaches to the garbage disposer as depicted in the video. Thanks for posting this Scott and for saving me $$$ and the hassle of waiting on a repair person. 😀
Thanks much. I'll try to see how it works.
Please let us know
This has helped tremendously!
I’ve never lived in a home and not seen this happen until very recently. I always thought that was normal. 😮
😂😂👍
Hi Scott thank you for your video help. I tried that and it wo0rked out great.
Nice job Harlan😊
It worked! Thank you!!!!
You’re welcome Ann😊
Driving me crazy!!! Thanks
Excellent 😊
I used my dishwasher for the first time and saw water gushing out of that thing by the faucet and wondered what that thing was...so its called an air gap.. Thanks for this.
You’re very welcome😊
Thank you a TON! This was a quick, easy (albeit gross) fix to my problem!
Thanks for the info. Got my setup fixed in less time it took to clean up the water.
This is an excellent video. It clearly shows the process I'll be going through. I made a major mistake with recycling, putting the plastic peanut butter jars in the dishwasher to clean before recycling; I'm sure that's why I ended up with problems. Is it possible for the water gushing from the air vent to also come out from underneath the sink? I'm not sure if this is a different leak altogether or it's just leaking from the top?
Your right, as the water shoots out the air gap, some seeps down the hole the air gap goes through down under the sink.
Add this to the long list of UA-cam DIY repair savings I have accrued over the years... I am easily up into the $1000s, and I am not particularly handy! Thanks!!!
Worked like a charm!
UA-cam is awesoooome👍👍👍
You are a hero!
Thanks Alex,
You’re the Hero because you fixed it😊
Thanks! I feel so empowered!
Excellent 👍
Thank you so much!!! This video helped me fix my clog.😊
I removed the black tube and ran water through it until I saw clear running water to make sure there’s nothing else on the inside walls of that black tube.
Nicely done😊
Thanks ! Fixed my problem
problem fixed. Thx!
Thanks Antony
Thanks for the great information!
You are very welcome👍
Great fix.
Fixed it! YEAH!!!!
Great job Linda😊
Thanks that took care of the problem!
I'm about to try this myself, no snake but will use a coat hanger, metal one
That should do it😊
Thanks 😊 men this real solve my problem 🤠🤪😃👌👌👌👌
You’re very welcome👍
I've had this problem since I moved in 6months ago. (I didn't know it wasnt supposed to do that) I hope this works Im tired of stinky dish towels trying to catch the water.
Should cure it pretty fast
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel I can't feel the hole inside the garage disposal, any ideas?
When I look under the sink the hose looks like it's attached in a lower part of the disposal
Thank you
Yay, thank you!!
Very helpful and great video 👍
Thanks so much👍
Any idea of how this would happen to a brand new dishwasher and sink and garbage disposal installation?
What is the name of the snake tool you are using? I can't seem to find it.

We’ll Get It Fixed 👍
Thanks. I'll try it.
Thank you so much for this. Question...we first noticed leaking under sink (thankful we have that rubber mat to protect from water) and the white hose was wet but couldn't find a leak. Then it started shooting out the top so we knew there was a problem mostly coming off disposal. Something weird we noticed is these big black spots inside air gap hose. Possibly mold but can't figure out how. Not sure to run cycle with bleach or vinegar to clear out this hose or replace it. And not sure it's something I can do myself. Been doing dishes for 2 weeks by hand and ready to tackle this problem. Would love your feedback if you have ever seen black inside the hose. There are probably 30 spots the size of a quarter. People I talked to said they looked at their hose and have zero black spots. Mold is a problem and nobody wants that in their house. This house was built in 2015. Thanks for this video. I'm going to tackle this today. Just not sure where the hose is leaking or was it going up to the top and running outside the piece on counter and running down outside of the hose and why the water underneath the sink! Loved your video for this housewife who is getting to the bottom of this! Thank you so much for this video.
Can you send that same question to my email? At: scottthefixitguy@yahoo.com
I had this problem, I poured chlorine in it. it worked.
19 plumbers hate you lol, great video very informative solved my problem. Thanks
Thank you!
I never new what that things. Was. Called.
I never had this problem until I put in a new Garbage Disposal.
There’s a plastic plug that you need to knock out on your new disposal.
It’s right where the dishwasher drain tube hooks up👍
Dude, you Saved my life
Great tips !!!
Helpful, thank you.
hello. i have replaced the garage disposer AND the black tube from the air gap to the disposer and water still shoots out from the air gap when running the dishwasher. the amount of water that comes out the air gap is a large amount. any ideas? thanks.
Hi David,
You need to remove the black tube from the disposer and use a screwdriver to knock out the plastic plug to allow water to flow in.
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel thank you. i kept watching half a dozen or so videos after this one and eventually came to this conclusion. such a minor thing to forget. but works great. thanks again.
That's exactly what was wring with mine. I ended up replacing the black hose.
Nice job😊
What if I have this issue, but no garbage disposal?
It’s a similar Repair you just need to clean out the large black hose that goes between the sink drain and the airgap located up near the kitchen faucet
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel thank you!
What if you dont have a garbage disposer and it still does it?
Thanks. Had snakes I bought from Amazon to unclog drains of hair. Used it here from top and bottom. And after many times now when dishwasher drains water runs full speed into garbage disposal
Awesome, nice job
I do not have a garbage disposal, can’t get the drain cleared. So frustrating.
Where did you get that brush and how long is it? I got one similar to yours, but I think is too short, is 12 inches, and is too flimsy, so it didn’t unclog my drain...
You can try a straightened clothes hanger👍
I have a question. Is the water will come out from the tube even clean up the hole inside?
I think the big black hose between the air gap and garbage disposal is still plugged.
Completely cleaned out both lines and it’s still going into sink. Trying for days and no solution. Any ideas?
You need to knock out the plastic plug that’s in the hole the big black tube connects to on the garbage disposer.
i have removed the black hose and the white tube, cleaned out the black hose, and i think i cleaned out the blue air vent completely, but water keeps piling out when i run the dishwasher. i cant help but think that my blue air vent is just broken? i can see water flushing into my disposal like it should but at the same time the air vent is pushing out water. i cant figure it out. i am going to try to replace the blue air vent as i think i've cleaned out everything. let me know your thoughts thanks.
That big black tube is crimped in the middle. You can put a hose clamp over the crimped array to open it up.
Omg I have the same dishwasher. Ok this better work lol
We had a leak through one of our pipes connected to the garbage disposal. Father in law came out and fixed it, still drying out under the sink and the wood shelf. Went to run the dishwasher for the first time since he fixed it and now water is backing up out of that little air gap thing. Husband doesn’t know shit so I gotta figure this out myself cause water keeps overflowing into the counter then floor, etc. Pain in the ass!!! So lost over here lol any tips you have would be highly appreciated! ☺️
What if you don’t have a garbage disposal?
Can you send that same question to my email at: scottthefixitguy@yahoo.com?
@@ScottTheFixItGuyChannel Can I ask why?
Will this issue with the air gap also cause the second sink to back up?
It shouldn’t cause the second sink to back up.
Can I pour Drano into dishwasher vent where you snakes it ?
I wouldn’t try that. Drano can cause damage.
Wouldn't be easier to remove the black hose from the disposal and clean it from there. You could fix the kink in the hose at the same time.
where did you get your wire snake?
Use a trombone cleaning flex brush. Worked great for me.
What if there is no clog
You might need to knock out the plastic plug that just inside the hole that the large black rubber hose connects to on your garage disposal 👍
the plug had to be removed from the garbage desposal
