I’m with the rest of the group, mine has done this for years and I thought it was normal , always cleaning up the water on my counter , just found out that’s not normal and tried this and sure enough that’s all it needed was to be cleaned out, wish I would’ve known this years ago! 😅 Thank you!!!
how stupid I am, I grew up thinking the water was supposed to come out the hole at that thing on the top of the sink, fixing mine tonight! thank you for the help
Omg you are crazy awesome. Thank you so much for saving me $$. I had this issue for weeks and finally fixed it yesterday with your video. I had a big cinnamon stick got stuck in there.
Noticed small amount of water in the cabinet under the kitchen sink. Not sure how long it had been there, but stored materials were all damp. The sink supply and drain pipes were all dry. Small water leak from air gap was the problem. This video really helped the troubleshooting and repair!
Thank you for sharing. This got me started, although the problem continued, but it was bc i forgot one important part. Clean the section attached to the garbage disposal. Once i cleaned the disposal part, it worked great. You saved me $$$ on a plumber!
Awesome, freaking handyman did a repair job and didn't clean out the lines so it's spouting water. Appreciate the slow paced vid very easily replicated.

Going to try this I feel like no one wanted to check this when we first moved and I've mcguyver a way to get it to drain into the sink with out the countertops getting more ruined until I found a way to fix it.
this is exactly what i was looking for never owned a dishwasher before and my apartment is very old, dishwasher hasnt been ran in a couple years so im glad this is an easy fix, side note is that pipe easily replaceable? looked at mine and it seems a little short so its causing a pinch almost
What is the long-term solution? I have to do this 3-4 times per year. Is it clogging from food in the dishwasher, or is it clogging from food going down the sink? Or both?
Most helpful and informative lesson. So glad to have found your channel. Any advice on what I can do to prevent or lessen the chance for clogging up the drain? Run the disposal frequently ? pour dishwashing detergent into the disposal ever so often to clean it ?
Hi Theresa, Great question. It really boils down to rinsing the dishes prior to loading them in the dishwasher. It’s such a pain in the neck but it really makes the dishwasher work much better.
That hose clogged up previously under our sink, had to have a plumber clean it out. Old guy can't get down to work under sink and get back up afterward. Is there another way to break up clog taking top off of air gap device? Suspect coffee ground blockage.
We don’t have a garbage disposal. (I always rinse dishes so very little food in the dishwasher.) Water runs through the vent when I tested with water from the faucet run through the extended hose. From what I see, there is no clog or blockage of any kind in the vent. Do you have another suggestion?
I think that big black rubber tube between the sink drain and air gap is clogged with gunk. Can you disconnect it from the sink drain and clean it out with a straightened wire coat hanger?
I just put in a new dishwasher . It was squinting water out the sink vent as in this video. Several months ago I replaced the garbage disposal. I didn't realize there is a plug that has to be drilled out so the water from the dishwasher can drain from the vent line.
Thanks Scott, It’s a very common problem. I’ve been to many homes where the water squirts out of the air gap because the plastic plug in their new garbage disposal had not been knocked out and there was no way for the drain water to get into the disposal.
Hi Scott. I hope you see this message. This is regarding my kitchen sink. Ive replaced all my hoses, sink faucet, garbage disposer, and air gap. I thought air gaps were supposed to drain dirty water coming out of the dishwasher. But apparently I was wrong. My problem is that after replacing everything (today’s date is April 29, 2020) I have water coming out of my air gap and it’s leaking between the top of the air gap hole through the bottom down inside under the sink. For one, I know that the rubber washer is too small. I noticed it when I was turning the top thread nut. But why am I still getting water coming out of the air gap? Can you please help? Thank you!
If you took your disposal out, would you need an air gap, and could you just replumb the pipes and put in a tailpiece with a branch to connect the dishwasher hose to, or should you keep the air gap and connect the black hose from the airgap to the tailpiece branch? Meaning keep the dishwasher hose to airgap and black hose to the new pipe tailpiece branch. (I have a water filter like yours, by Seagull.)
I fed a coaxial cable through mine and it went through, but water is still backflowing out of the air gap. I will check again for partial blockage or a crimp in the tube.
I got all new installation, new dishwasher, new air gap and all the new drain pipe. everything is perfectly clean all way to the desposal. The airgap is still shooting out water everytime I use it. what could be the reason? my previous washer was using the high loop vs the new airgap.
Thank you. This video saved me. Subscribed!
