I passed my written test for private pilot yesterday. I bought the King School online course. Completed this over several months and took five of their practice tests. Same as the FAA. They give you 60 questions on each and 2.5 hours to complete them. I also, like Dr. Feller suggested here, bought the test study guide. I also got a set of two CD's from a friend that covered all the sections... weather, regulations, instruments, etc. I put the files on my iPhone and played them over and over through my headsets when I walked the dog, worked around the house and so forth. In short, I studied the heck out of this for a full month, day after day, AFTER I had completed the King course. There really is no easy way to do this. The trick is to study and memorize everything that involves regulations, limitations, definitions, etc. If you can get all these right then that leaves you room to fail some of the questions that require reading the VOR's, charts, doing math or using the computer. You need to get a 70 to pass. That's no more than 18 wrong answers. BTW: I'm 66 years old and I got a 93 on my test. If I can do this, so can you.

I scored 100% on my commercial written. The FAA called my FBO and asked what kind of person I was. They thought I had cheated, because they couldn't recall anyone scoring 100% on the exam.

I watched this video about a month prior to my test. This is by far the best explanation of how to plot cross country flights. Great job on this one! I got screwed by a computer crash that gave me a miss when it rebooted on a question that I was never asked on the written. Neither Gleim nor the FAA nor the testing company could explain what happened or even what the question was. I never saw it and it was counted as a miss. The guy administering the test said "I have never seen this happen before". I wish I had 5 bucks for every time I have heard that phrase. So I received one miss and didn't score 100% and I was bummed but at the end of it all I now have my private pilot license. Funny thing, after studying cross country planning and having it cold, my test had zero questions on the topic. It's hit or miss what you get.
If I recall, In AOPA website, there was link to faa practice test. There are many questions and not all are used so its best to do it like a bad habit. Its been 15 yrs. that was for private pilot. At the time if i remember correctly, an 86% was needed to pass. WWW.ALLAMERICANAERIAL.COM
I took my discovery flight more than 10 years ago....but my family was fairly young and I had to back away of my dream of becoming a pilot. Fast forward 10+ years and I am not thinking about it again. I have ordered the books and the tools and will be following your videos to prepare for my test. I have a meeting with a local flying club next month, and hope to begin the flight training portion in December or January. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

Years ago, I also made a 97% on the written, missed two questions. I did ground school at a Junior College with a lousy instructor. I didn't care. I received the paperwork allowing me to take the written, and I studied about 2 months going through a similar book til I knew it front and back. Passed the test, then I took my first actual flight.
You do realize that you don’t need the license to fly right. When your with your instructor you fly and you can do solos at about 16 but you don’t need your license to fly so I know for a fact you didn’t take the test and then fly for the first time that’s not really how it works.
ProFlare ak yeah they let me fly up with an instructor before I was even a student there. Usually you take a discovery flight before you pay hundreds of cash to go into ground school
@@CK86325 You're right, but when you study and pass, you become a lot more knowledgeable in aviation than anyone who starts flying first. In the long run, this will help you spend less money than the average student since you started off with more knowledge.
I'm currently using the Jeppesen books, you're absolutely correct. 6 weeks into ground school, this book is the most comprehensive. Text book is great, I enjoy reading it, section questions are in depth, I learn. But this study guide is creating the framework needed to comprehend. As each chapter is summarized, critical information is asked/answered and you move on to another relative question. This technique will work, in part because none of the information on its on builds on itself initially. Each chapter is unique. Getting what you need, not everything helps from feeling overwhelmed.
You get it, Ann. It is an excellent framework for learning and understanding because it parallels the test almost perfectly. Doesn't matter how old the guide is, the concepts and formulas are still the same.Good luck in your studies. Just got my ticket a few weeks ago.
Alan you seem like a gifted educator. I am brand new to this site. Look at your list of videos from a new perspective. I have no idea which video I should start with. This is step one of my private pilots license journey. Step one through step “you got your pilots license” would be so much easier. Also thanks you because as I just started I really try to give to understand everything from that study guide even how the altimeter works that there is air going through the static port and as we climb we experienced low pressure therefore low air entering the static port will cause the capsule to expande….. That’s how I was trying to understand but it takes times and age to understand big explanation behind it. But as you said using that studying guide will build a knowledgeable framework in your mind and therefore becoming really knowledgeable on the subject. Thank you that was really the video that answer my questions.
This is exactly how they teach in the army AIT. I went through the school house for ATC 15Q , all the study material was just the question and answer. I scored a 92 on my CTO .
This one way to do it, but the mindset you get when you do it this way is just so on-edge if you know what i mean. I read all those books cover to cover, no problem, and it didnt take that long; and on my first try i got a 93! It is true that you can learn in more peace and quiet after the test, but if you force yourself to derive questions from knowledge, it just makes you a better pilot altogether.

I’ve found that true internalization comes from experience. You memorize and drill material to pass these tests but it only makes sense to you once you encounter it in the real world…once you’ve been using TAFs for a while in a practical setting, once your brain gets used to operating under Coordinated Universal Time in your local environment for a while, once you’ve entered on the 45 at numerous airports after glancing down at the wind sock/circle, etc. Theory and memorization only get you so far. Experience is what ultimately makes sense of this type of information.
So true, if you try to 100% comprehend everything it would take you an insanely long time. I'm a professional pilot major and I found out pretty quick that it's dense stuff and that you have to do things in a different order like you said. I read the ground school book for a rehearsal before flights to make sure I really understand what is going on and it's almost like a different part of my brain vs. the test taking part.
YES! The mistake most people make is they think they have to learn everything about everything. This is not true for the FAA written. Just learn to pass the test, THEN learn everything. But get the pressure of the test off your back.
I have several Jeppesen books that I review all the time. When I took my FAA test, some 40+ years ago, I studied several books, I remember memorizing things I knew would probably be on the test AND because I knew they were very important to flying. I got a 97 first try, but, more importantly, I did not learn a book by rote, you need to memorize things for their importance in flying, not just to take a test! It has been proven that people can certainly cram for a test one night, take it the next day and pass, BUT, they will NOT remember the material for very long. I did that for higher degrees in college and med school, and if you USE what you learned, you will remember it -- longer or, sometimes, forever -- but not when it's just by rote memory. It's those kinds of pilots who MAKE MISTAKES up in the sky!! Pilot error causes 85% of fatalities. You need BOTH types of learning, and "stick and rudder" flying is more important IN THE SKY than getting 90%+ on a written exam.
I find the checkride and oral exam portion to me more intimidating because I stutter when I communicate especially when I get nervous around authoritative figures, I have a hard time focusing when under pressure, have poor hand/eye coordination skills, and poor spacial awareness. But written exams and understanding theoretical concepts seems to come naturally for me.
Right Julie. Getting the test out of the way is the key to learning and enjoying aviation. At least in my experience. I even did my ground school AFTER I passed the test so I could get more out of the class. it worked big time for me.
How did you do with your practical and oral test, Dr.? I briefly used the Kings videos back in the late 80s. But going the "just memorize the written test" was not for me. I wanted a deeper understanding. btw. I did 97 on my written. Smoked The Practical like some kind of rock star. Hit a blunt with the examiner on the oral. Life is good and my SEL is in good standing.

I barely passed (by one) my Private written. Having work, a small child and everyday life getting in the way. I read all the "big" books...studied a LOT. It just barely got me by. 8 years later, I barely passed my Instrument written...mainly due to the same study methods...and a plethora of ADF/NDB questions, having never even seen, let alone worked with either. For my Commercial written (which was only 3 months later), I used only Gleims test prep (basically the same thing you did here)....97%!!!! Only question I got wrong was regarding an NDB. I read the book through (disregarding the questions)...then went back through and did the questions...anything I got wrong got marked, and I'd study those areas. I went through the book 4-5 times, until I was consistently correct. Then I did the "practice tests" in the back of the book. For the written, that is the only book needed!
Actually he has done the right thing because when there is a very short time and you have to prepare for a whole lot of things there is no option but to go through the question and answers. Good job.
Don’t listen to this guy. That’s why we have crazy pilots out there! Read the books, take your time and don’t use rote memory except for limitations of the airplane, etc... everyone could get a 100 per cent. It’s just dedication and understanding.
So this was posted on Kings website. Is it true? "Warning: You can't just memorize test questions and expect to pass your FAA Private Pilot Written Test. Why? The FAA used to make their question banks publicly available; however, they have not done so for many years. In fact, the FAA has recently gone through their entire database and changed every single test question and answer in order to eliminate test question memorization. No one, including test prep educators, has access to the FAA question banks. To be a safe and competent pilot-in-command, and to pass your required tests, there is no shortcut. You must acquire the necessary pilot knowledge." ?.
I scored a 100 percent 1st try with the KINGS course. That was 14 years ago. It made the check ride instructor very Impressed and lenient. He failed 2 people before me.
if 60% is to memorize then the rest is just what makes sense and what is extremely off. its starting to become clear to me. thanks to you. still need to practice this when I'm in air. thank you for helping me allow to love studying aviation again. was the worst week bought 3 books at Barnes & Noble's. 2 really 1 other was a flight log I need. My pet peeve is an ubiquitous figure 34 question. The chart is obviously from a Cesna 172L, and the answer matches what you get if you use the chart or the calculations from the 172L POH. However they have done such a poor job reproducing the chart that you can't get the correct answer from the chart as they show it. Nonetheless the correct answer they expect is from the POH material, not what they reproduce. They only way to get the question correct is memorize the wrong answer (based on the material we have at hand to use). All of the quiz prep sites indicate a moment/1000 that is .4 shy of what you get carefully using the diagrams in the supplement, yet they perfectly match what you get if you use the 172L POH. The smoking gun. On the chart in the supplement 38 gallons clearly has a moment of about 11.3. In the solutions it's 11.0. 11.0 matches the 172L POH.
Alan you are right know one can learn from all these books and remenber it all from all the books. This exam book you have i have the same book only the book i have 2004 The pagers are on diffrent page numbers but the Answers and question are the same. Iv been watching your videos and iv learnt alot from the videos. You mentioned this in 2015. Do you still suggest going through the books, even after passing the test? Do you see value in them. I understand practicality, but there might be some tricks, info, details which might be useful in practical life even after getting the pilot certificate. Or you think they are wastage of paper and money?

I just bought that exact test guide he showed in the video. But on the back of the book it says the material is from the 2005 FAA test, so should I get the 2021 gleim test prep book? Or are all the books the same?

Hello I am struggling big time with PPL navigation I am horrible at maths, all the subjects within a few days I passed easy within two sittings like you said a lot of memorising which I am good at but I have been stuck on Nav for months now and cannot use this memorising because of all the numbers conversions and so on .any advise or good links that's could be handy ? Thank you for this advice. I ordered the book, and before I start studying, I called the exam center to ask about the documents that I must provide before the test. They asked about a certificate from an FAA flight instructor, or a certificate from a flight school, etc. Could you please tell me how did you do it? what documents did you need when you booked your exam? You need a CFI (Certified flight instructor) to sign your logbook to take the knowledge exam. To get a CFI to sign ur log book, simply go to a flight school and ask a CFI. He will access ur knowledge. The endorsement and form of ID is all you need.
@@stephenbordano5974 I believe you actually need to receive instructions from the CFI, not just be tested by him/her. I'm getting my certificate through Sporty's Learn To Fly online course.
Every fiber in my body opposes your method. But, after seeing your video and explanation, I tend to agree. If you take the greatest stress component, i.e. the exam, out of the equation, you can enjoy your real studies, much more relaxing. So I belief it is a very good tip to start with the exam first. It is the candidates prerogative which method he/she embraces. So thanks.
So I bought the book and started yesterday. a lot of the questions are confusing such as northern hemisphere error questions. should I just memorize these type of questions without understanding it? im not talking about the problem solving questions. thanks for your response!
I initially studied with Gleim but my friends told me about Sheppard Air and I used that instead of gleim and passed the Written! The questions from Sheppard Air were on the exam. Plus it's free (for the online test practice, otherwise you can buy the whole online study package)
A lot of the comments below indicate a complete lack of understanding as to the process of getting a PPL. The FAA written test is almost irrelevant as a barometer of the knowledge and skill of a PPL candidate. You must endure a multi hour interview pre flight briefing preflight safety routine, check ride where you demonstrate radio and navigation skills, and to even take this final test you have logged a minimum of 40 hours but most will have many more. Those hours include at least 20 solo and several at night and XC. So really, if you pass the faa knowledge test without really knowing it very well, that will resolve itself in no time.
Myself I use the full ASA kit including e6b and I use sportys online courses as well as youtube channels and apply a combination of all tools for my ppl with goal too get my AtP goal
Why would you want to pass the written *if your never going to utilize the certificate in the first place? I wouldnt want someone to fly me around if this is how they “passed.”*
98% on my first try. use ASA Test Prep, Sporty's Test Prep App, (or any other app with a question bank). Study the PHAK and FARs. Make a cheat sheet of things you consistently miss on practice tests to study the night before. And go through your answers once your done to make sure you didn't screw up (Nearly made a 90% if I didn't check my answers) Most importantly, do practice tests and score 90% or above, then go do your written

@@Sky_Burger88 sportys is not just practice questions its a full ground school with videos explaining all the sections on the test. . Once you finish the videos and score 80% on 2 practice exams you get the endorsment.

Thanks Don. It's only good enough for the FAA written. Not the oral and checkride. But worry about the latter two AFTER you aced the Written and put it behind you. Trust me, when it's your butt up in that plane alone at 5000 feet you will want to read and learn everything you can get your hands on when you're on the ground.
Allen r u still actively involved in this series of vids? I looked for the test guide. All I see is out dated test guide books, 09. There have been important changes as of recent; I believe as of 2015. Your vid is dated 2015. Do we need an updated book? Thx 4 the vids.
I haven't made any new ground school vids in a while but have a bunch of new flight videos that I'm shooting from inside the plane. Since the video here I passed my checkered and am now a licensed Private Pilot. Thanks to my ground school prep I breezed through the oral part of the checkride. You do not need an updated book. The concepts and questions are still basically the same, just the numbers change. Follow my steps in the video and you'll ace it.
Simply put, based on your experience, your suggesting I should just go ahead & get the new book, or get the book you have, or does it make a difference. What year book do you have it might be easier to follow you without the complication of the new book. What I'm wondering is if the vids you have up cover everything in the test book? and if there's enough here to get one threw the test. I only counted 35 of ur vids. I stopped watching when you said you had another plotter vid only not to find it. I'm sure others are like me. Also, are this in order? One other thing I'm thing is that maybe your just covering the things that are difficult to grasp, but I can't tell if you don't identify this. If you had the time to cover the book I'm sure you would get a huge audience. I've been trying to follow Cyndy Hollman, but it is a lot to go over. As I've mentioned I took a Ham test following some one like you and it went great.
I scored 98% on my written 2 years ago, it expired then I retook the written last month and got 88%, passed my check ride today and the DPE said “88% is a perfect score, the higher the score the less people can fly the plane”
Back when I took the test you could get a list of the actual FAA questions 400 I think and they would ask you 100 out of those. I did study to learn the material but for the test I took the book and blanked out all the incorrect answers so I only saw the correct answer every time I looked at the book. I passed , but my method was flawed as the test was changed at the first of the month so I had to rely on what I learned. When I showed instructor the results he just said well now you know you have a lot to learn.
I got a 97% on my TC PPAER exam. Go above and beyond in ground school and do tons of questions. For my fellow Canadian Harvs Air ground school will get you a 90%.

If you don't mind my asking..what did you MISS on the test?
Years ago, I also made a 97% on the written, missed two questions.
I did ground school at a Junior College with a lousy instructor. I didn't
care. I received the paperwork allowing me to take the written, and I
studied about 2 months going through a similar book til I knew it front
and back. Passed the test, then I took my first actual flight.
You do realize that you don’t need the license to fly right. When your with your instructor you fly and you can do solos at about 16 but you don’t need your license to fly so I know for a fact you didn’t take the test and then fly for the first time that’s not really how it works.
ProFlare ak yeah they let me fly up with an instructor before I was even a student there. Usually you take a discovery flight before you pay hundreds of cash to go into ground school
@@CK86325 You're right, but when you study and pass, you become a lot more knowledgeable in aviation than anyone who starts flying first. In the long run, this will help you spend less money than the average student since you started off with more knowledge.
I'm currently using the Jeppesen books, you're absolutely correct. 6 weeks into ground school, this book is the most comprehensive. Text book is great, I enjoy reading it, section questions are in depth, I learn. But this study guide is creating the framework needed to comprehend. As each chapter is summarized, critical information is asked/answered and you move on to another relative question. This technique will work, in part because none of the information on its on builds on itself initially. Each chapter is unique. Getting what you need, not everything helps from feeling overwhelmed.
You get it, Ann. It is an excellent framework for learning and understanding because it parallels the test almost perfectly. Doesn't matter how old the guide is, the concepts and formulas are still the same.Good luck in your studies. Just got my ticket a few weeks ago.

This is step one of my private pilots license journey. Step one through step “you got your pilots license” would be so much easier. Also thanks you because as I just started I really try to give to understand everything from that study guide even how the altimeter works that there is air going through the static port and as we climb we experienced low pressure therefore low air entering the static port will cause the capsule to expande…..
That’s how I was trying to understand but it takes times and age to understand big explanation behind it.
But as you said using that studying guide will build a knowledgeable framework in your mind and therefore becoming really knowledgeable on the subject.

This is exactly how they teach in the army AIT. I went through the school house for ATC 15Q , all the study material was just the question and answer. I scored a 92 on my CTO .
This one way to do it, but the mindset you get when you do it this way is just so on-edge if you know what i mean. I read all those books cover to cover, no problem, and it didnt take that long; and on my first try i got a 93!
It is true that you can learn in more peace and quiet after the test, but if you force yourself to derive questions from knowledge, it just makes you a better pilot altogether.

I’ve found that true internalization comes from experience. You memorize and drill material to pass these tests but it only makes sense to you once you encounter it in the real world…once you’ve been using TAFs for a while in a practical setting, once your brain gets used to operating under Coordinated Universal Time in your local environment for a while, once you’ve entered on the 45 at numerous airports after glancing down at the wind sock/circle, etc. Theory and memorization only get you so far. Experience is what ultimately makes sense of this type of information.

So true, if you try to 100% comprehend everything it would take you an insanely long time. I'm a professional pilot major and I found out pretty quick that it's dense stuff and that you have to do things in a different order like you said. I read the ground school book for a rehearsal before flights to make sure I really understand what is going on and it's almost like a different part of my brain vs. the test taking part.
YES! The mistake most people make is they think they have to learn everything about everything. This is not true for the FAA written. Just learn to pass the test, THEN learn everything. But get the pressure of the test off your back.
I have several Jeppesen books that I review all the time. When I took my FAA test, some 40+ years ago, I studied several books, I remember memorizing things I knew would probably be on the test AND because I knew they were very important to flying. I got a 97 first try, but, more importantly, I did not learn a book by rote, you need to memorize things for their importance in flying, not just to take a test! It has been proven that people can certainly cram for a test one night, take it the next day and pass, BUT, they will NOT remember the material for very long. I did that for higher degrees in college and med school, and if you USE what you learned, you will remember it -- longer or, sometimes, forever -- but not when it's just by rote memory. It's those kinds of pilots who MAKE MISTAKES up in the sky!! Pilot error causes 85% of fatalities. You need BOTH types of learning, and "stick and rudder" flying is more important IN THE SKY than getting 90%+ on a written exam.

I find the checkride and oral exam portion to me more intimidating because I stutter when I communicate especially when I get nervous around authoritative figures, I have a hard time focusing when under pressure, have poor hand/eye coordination skills, and poor spacial awareness. But written exams and understanding theoretical concepts seems to come naturally for me.
So true and a great pep talk for GA's preparing for getting through the written so you can really start enjoying aviation post-exam!
Right Julie. Getting the test out of the way is the key to learning and enjoying aviation. At least in my experience. I even did my ground school AFTER I passed the test so I could get more out of the class. it worked big time for me.
How did you do with your practical and oral test, Dr.? I briefly used the Kings videos back in the late 80s. But going the "just memorize the written test" was not for me. I wanted a deeper understanding. btw. I did 97 on my written. Smoked The Practical like some kind of rock star. Hit a blunt with the examiner on the oral. Life is good and my SEL is in good standing.

I barely passed (by one) my Private written. Having work, a small child and everyday life getting in the way. I read all the "big" books...studied a LOT. It just barely got me by. 8 years later, I barely passed my Instrument written...mainly due to the same study methods...and a plethora of ADF/NDB questions, having never even seen, let alone worked with either.
For my Commercial written (which was only 3 months later), I used only Gleims test prep (basically the same thing you did here)....97%!!!! Only question I got wrong was regarding an NDB.
I read the book through (disregarding the questions)...then went back through and did the questions...anything I got wrong got marked, and I'd study those areas. I went through the book 4-5 times, until I was consistently correct. Then I did the "practice tests" in the back of the book.
For the written, that is the only book needed!

Actually he has done the right thing because when there is a very short time and you have to prepare for a whole lot of things there is no option but to go through the question and answers. Good job.
Don’t listen to this guy. That’s why we have crazy pilots out there! Read the books, take your time and don’t use rote memory except for limitations of the airplane, etc... everyone could get a 100 per cent. It’s just dedication and understanding.

So this was posted on Kings website. Is it true? "Warning: You can't just memorize test questions and expect to pass your FAA Private Pilot Written Test. Why? The FAA used to make their question banks publicly available; however, they have not done so for many years. In fact, the FAA has recently gone through their entire database and changed every single test question and answer in order to eliminate test question memorization. No one, including test prep educators, has access to the FAA question banks. To be a safe and competent pilot-in-command, and to pass your required tests, there is no shortcut. You must acquire the necessary pilot knowledge." ?.
I got a 99 on it! just read the book. Did the math in 0n the side of the test. No calculator. this back in 1981
I scored a 100 percent 1st try with the KINGS course. That was 14 years ago. It made the check ride instructor very Impressed and lenient. He failed 2 people before me.
if 60% is to memorize then the rest is just what makes sense and what is extremely off. its starting to become clear to me. thanks to you. still need to practice this when I'm in air. thank you for helping me allow to love studying aviation again.

My pet peeve is an ubiquitous figure 34 question. The chart is obviously from a Cesna 172L, and the answer matches what you get if you use the chart or the calculations from the 172L POH. However they have done such a poor job reproducing the chart that you can't get the correct answer from the chart as they show it. Nonetheless the correct answer they expect is from the POH material, not what they reproduce. They only way to get the question correct is memorize the wrong answer (based on the material we have at hand to use). All of the quiz prep sites indicate a moment/1000 that is .4 shy of what you get carefully using the diagrams in the supplement, yet they perfectly match what you get if you use the 172L POH. The smoking gun. On the chart in the supplement 38 gallons clearly has a moment of about 11.3. In the solutions it's 11.0. 11.0 matches the 172L POH.
Alan you are right know one can learn from all these books and remenber it all from all the books. This exam book you have i have the same book only the book i have 2004 The pagers are on diffrent page numbers but the Answers and question are the same. Iv been watching your videos and iv learnt alot from the videos. The point isn't to "pass a test". The point is to fully understand the information to be a safer and better pilot. Cheating the system only hurts you

You mentioned this in 2015. Do you still suggest going through the books, even after passing the test? Do you see value in them. I understand practicality, but there might be some tricks, info, details which might be useful in practical life even after getting the pilot certificate. Or you think they are wastage of paper and money?

I just bought that exact test guide he showed in the video. But on the back of the book it says the material is from the 2005 FAA test, so should I get the 2021 gleim test prep book? Or are all the books the same?

After your private exam all you have to do is download Sheppard air and you’ll make a 100 every exam, instrument thru atp.
Hello I am struggling big time with PPL navigation I am horrible at maths, all the subjects within a few days I passed easy within two sittings like you said a lot of memorising which I am good at but I have been stuck on Nav for months now and cannot use this memorising because of all the numbers conversions and so on .any advise or good links that's could be handy ? Thank you for this advice. I ordered the book, and before I start studying, I called the exam center to ask about the documents that I must provide before the test. They asked about a certificate from an FAA flight instructor, or a certificate from a flight school, etc. Could you please tell me how did you do it? what documents did you need when you booked your exam?

You need a CFI (Certified flight instructor) to sign your logbook to take the knowledge exam. To get a CFI to sign ur log book, simply go to a flight school and ask a CFI. He will access ur knowledge. The endorsement and form of ID is all you need.
@@stephenbordano5974 I believe you actually need to receive instructions from the CFI, not just be tested by him/her. I'm getting my certificate through Sporty's Learn To Fly online course.
Every fiber in my body opposes your method. But, after seeing your video and explanation, I tend to agree. If you take the greatest stress component, i.e. the exam, out of the equation, you can enjoy your real studies, much more relaxing. So I belief it is a very good tip to start with the exam first. It is the candidates prerogative which method he/she embraces. So thanks.
So I bought the book and started yesterday. a lot of the questions are confusing such as northern hemisphere error questions. should I just memorize these type of questions without understanding it? im not talking about the problem solving questions. thanks for your response!

My understanding is you needyour CFI to endorse your log book in order to take the written test... so how did you do that?
I initially studied with Gleim but my friends told me about Sheppard Air and I used that instead of gleim and passed the Written! The questions from Sheppard Air were on the exam. Plus it's free (for the online test practice, otherwise you can buy the whole online study package)
A lot of the comments below indicate a complete lack of understanding as to the process of getting a PPL. The FAA written test is almost irrelevant as a barometer of the knowledge and skill of a PPL candidate. You must endure a multi hour interview pre flight briefing preflight safety routine, check ride where you demonstrate radio and navigation skills, and to even take this final test you have logged a minimum of 40 hours but most will have many more. Those hours include at least 20 solo and several at night and XC. So really, if you pass the faa knowledge test without really knowing it very well, that will resolve itself in no time.
Myself I use the full ASA kit including e6b and I use sportys online courses as well as youtube channels and apply a combination of all tools for my ppl with goal too get my AtP goal

98% on my first try. use ASA Test Prep, Sporty's Test Prep App, (or any other app with a question bank). Study the PHAK and FARs. Make a cheat sheet of things you consistently miss on practice tests to study the night before. And go through your answers once your done to make sure you didn't screw up (Nearly made a 90% if I didn't check my answers) Most importantly, do practice tests and score 90% or above, then go do your written

@@Sky_Burger88 sportys is not just practice questions its a full ground school with videos explaining all the sections on the test. . Once you finish the videos and score 80% on 2 practice exams you get the endorsment.

Thanks Don. It's only good enough for the FAA written. Not the oral and checkride. But worry about the latter two AFTER you aced the Written and put it behind you. Trust me, when it's your butt up in that plane alone at 5000 feet you will want to read and learn everything you can get your hands on when you're on the ground.

Allen r u still actively involved in this series of vids? I looked for the test guide. All I see is out dated test guide books, 09. There have been important changes as of recent; I believe as of 2015. Your vid is dated 2015. Do we need an updated book? Thx 4 the vids.
I haven't made any new ground school vids in a while but have a bunch of new flight videos that I'm shooting from inside the plane. Since the video here I passed my checkered and am now a licensed Private Pilot. Thanks to my ground school prep I breezed through the oral part of the checkride. You do not need an updated book. The concepts and questions are still basically the same, just the numbers change. Follow my steps in the video and you'll ace it.
Simply put, based on your experience, your suggesting I should just go ahead & get the new book, or get the book you have, or does it make a difference. What year book do you have it might be easier to follow you without the complication of the new book.
What I'm wondering is if the vids you have up cover everything in the test book? and if there's enough here to get one threw the test. I only counted 35 of ur vids. I stopped watching when you said you had another plotter vid only not to find it. I'm sure others are like me. Also, are this in order? One other thing I'm thing is that maybe your just covering the things that are difficult to grasp, but I can't tell if you don't identify this. If you had the time to cover the book I'm sure you would get a huge audience. I've been trying to follow Cyndy Hollman, but it is a lot to go over. As I've mentioned I took a Ham test following some one like you and it went great.
How does one get those videos?
I scored 98% on my written 2 years ago, it expired then I retook the written last month and got 88%, passed my check ride today and the DPE said “88% is a perfect score, the higher the score the less people can fly the plane”
Back when I took the test you could get a list of the actual FAA questions 400 I think and they would ask you 100 out of those. I did study to learn the material but for the test I took the book and blanked out all the incorrect answers so I only saw the correct answer every time I looked at the book. I passed , but my method was flawed as the test was changed at the first of the month so I had to rely on what I learned. When I showed instructor the results he just said well now you know you have a lot to learn.

I got a 97% on my TC PPAER exam. Go above and beyond in ground school and do tons of questions. For my fellow Canadian Harvs Air ground school will get you a 90%.

Umar AAG the FAA does update, add and revise questions throughout the years so a recent or current version should be best.
