  • So I finally broke down and bought a mower from GSA lawn equipment in Barberton.
I got a fair deal on it and they really treated me well. So how does this mower work? So far, it's been great! Here's a bit more about the mower and take a peek at the video to see what you think about it on your own.

This mower is fast, powerful and built like a tank. Really solid thick deck protects against rocks or other debris hitting it and damaging it. Love the way it handles and have not had a single problem in the three seasons I have owned it. Mulches the fall leaves without any problems and powers through even the thickest grass and weeds. I previously had a Husqvarna zero turn mower, and it was okay, but my Ferris puts it to shame. Great investment for my really rough land and I have no regrets at all about buying it. Very reasonable price and a very comfortable mower that is fun to drive.

I own a small lawn care business. Unfortunately with the number and type of customers, I still can't justify buying a zero turn mower. I'm getting by with 2 trusty Honda push mowers.. But if I get significantly more clients this season, and some of them turn out to be large properties that could only be maintained with a mower sporting a deck larger than 21", I think I'll go with this Ferris 400S or their more expensive stand on model SRS Z1.
Although there are cheaper zero turn mowers, especially Toro's Timecutter My ride, they are all home owner grade. Ferris 400S is the cheapest commercial zero turn mower on the market and I think it's worth the money.
Sure, getting one will force me to buy a trailer to haul the beast to various job sites, and this will kick another 2000$ out of my pocket, but I hope I find myself in a situation of needing a zero turn to cut huge 300$ lawns that will pay off the Ferris within a year or 2.. Crossing my fingers...

So far, it's been great for me! The mud becomes a but if a problem for it, but I think that's all zero turns......and everyone in this area this year lol

Most mowers I've owned seem to collect grass round the pulleys

fast forward to 2021, there's a kawasaki engine shortage, the zt2800 hyrdos no longer have external reservoirs and there's a 2-3 month wait on a scag, hence why i'm shopping for another mower. going to cancel my order if they don't get their crap together.

It looks like you've made a good choice in a mower. Better mowers are also much, much heavier, which isn't good, especially on small lawns like yours. And I'm betting your ride isn't any rougher then the standard suspension seats, like the John Deere z930M. And with a fabricated deck, you can add an Advanced Chute.

SO far, it's worked well for me.....other than a flat tire from a piece of glass. Super happy with it!

Keep an eye on those aluminum valve covers, the ones I had on my Kohler leaked rather quickly and the replacements were hard plastic, but they've yet to leak. And if you do have to order them, pay attention to the part numbers, I believe tho they look the same, one might have a vent/vacuum line going through it. Also the fuel pumps online are only like $12. bucks, I've been through a couple of them. When I needed a replacement belt I got it at NAPA. I wish they sold Ferris around here, I so want to test drive one of them. I saw a Ferris vs Toro online and the Ferris seemed to take the bumps better then the MyRide.

Now that you've had it almost a year, any updates on it? I'll be buying one within a week or two, replacing a Cub Cadet RZT 50. Specifically wanting a power bagger attachment for whatever next one I get, which the 400S does have. Can you advise on the power of the 21.5 Kawasaki motor? Does it ever bog down? My CUb had the 24HP Kohler, never had an issue with power. Not sure if 2.5HP is noticeable even. Also would love if you have any more feedback on the suspension. When I looked at one at the dealer, I could jump up and down on the rear corner of it and barely make the shock go up and down, seems like the spring is too stiff. The shock was adjusted to the lowest compression too!

A couple of things for you on this>>>>
Power has been great. Have shoved it in some really tall stuff and it hasn't bogged down on me yet. The suspension has been great also. A bump is much different than jumping up and down on it. (years of automotive suspension tuning here). On the softest setting, I've got one bump in my yard that causes it to bottom out. I went up one click on all of the springs and it took care of it and still kept the ride nice. So far, it's been a great mower. Well designed also as I just did the oil change and that and it's super easy. So far....it's been great!

Has anyone ever checked into putting a storage box in the right fender well, under the controls? Is it hollow otherwise? That is the only thing I can find wrong with the design. Just got my Ferris yesterday OH YEAH 😁

Great mower. Nice cut but I have never owned a mower that accumulates as much grass under the deck as this mower does.
