I think Red fell victim to a trap that will be familiar to Civilisation 4 players. There's a strategy called a choke, where you don't focus on stealing an enemy's cities outright, but instead raid their tiles and destroy their economic units. You then focus on your own domestic economy until you are strong enough to overwhelm your opponent's hobbled empire. However, the danger here is that you lose focus on your domestic economy because all your energy is devoted to destroying your opponent's economy. I think one of the reason Red had a rough 'middle' game is because he was so focussed on disrupting Blue, he didn't notice things going wrong at home. Once he rectified that, he could take advantage of the choke he was putting on Blue and win the game from there.
What i see here is that most of people just cant see that the spearmen gave red the game, even tho they did not killed a lot villies it was the idle time which starved and tilted blue. People wanna epic LotR battles and they all lose to small disruptions. Great Game
