I’m Fairly certain that boat repair labor is at about $130 per hour these days. Then you calculate in that 90% of those boats will need to be completely re-wired. After sitting in the water for weeks you’re going to have some delaminating down the road. Insurance adjusters know all of this and they know the repair bill isn’t worth the outcome. There’s a hell of a lot more wrong with those boats than meets the eye. Anyone not knowing this going into buying one of those boats is making a big mistake. For the person that can carry out all the repairs on their own, some of those boats could be a good deal.
Non coastal people see many too good to be true deals in the Trader or on E bay shortly after Hurricanes. I used to work at a mid west boat dealer and we would get calls about a deal they found in Florida and wanted to know if it was a good enough deal to buy it sight unseen. My response was always "you know they just had a hurricane in that area, right"? Sometimes the customer would buy it and bring it into us for repairs just to find out all electrical wiring was corroded from one end to the other inside the insulation and where there was electrical current the wire and device would be eaten away by electrolysis. It only takes a few hours of submersion for electrolysis to do it's evil and it doesn't matter if it is salt or fresh water.
@@kingfish4918 do you mean disconnect the batteries? Definitely will help with electrolisis.. That is the damage itself ! The good part is that 80 % of a boat is plastic but every metal in contact with an electric flow will get heavy corroded.
The biggest take away is not the damage you can see but the insurability of these boats over long term life, it's not what you can see that make them uninsurable, it's what you can't see, would you insure these boats after being "sunk" think about that, To be reinsured it needs to be a documented full restoration "Refit" to get a new insurance policy, there in lies the rub.
I am in the boat hauling biz and know what these boats are worth and take the 30 Grady that boat is 280 to 320 even if you had to rewire and electronics that is only 85k and if you got for say 30 your into it for 125 140 the most and you can still sell it for new value because boats don’t have salvage titles I have 3 clients that is all they do is buy salvaged boats and fix them up and resell them they have bought 140 boats so far between the 3 of them
@@stephenbenner2250 This was in Cape Coral Florida on Burnt Store road. Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage was the company running it. Enjoy your weekend!🙂
I think some of the reason such clean boats get totaled, is just because of the location. Right after a hurricane goes through prices for anything boat related go through the roof. From haul out to repair to shipping to even just storage in a boat yard prices are big. Insurance companies have to pay for storage and repairs under outrageous conditions so in a sense it's cheaper for them to just total the boat and write off the loss. than to pay for months of storage until it can get repaired.
That makes so much sense. How hard it must be when an area gets hit so hard, with everything. Thanks so much for your comment and thanks for watching! Enjoy your evening!🙂
Thank you for the video. I have passed by that lot on Burnt Stove road a bunch of times in the past few months and wondered what boats were sitting in there. I totally missed the notice about the auction. I would have loved to have checked it out.
@@jimmclaughlin5930 I know the event we went to is closed. Not certain if they are staging anymore boats at that site. You can check Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage to see if they plan on another. Thanks!!🙂
Most likely they want a pay out. We're finding in our market that a lot of people are selling up to free up money. Mainly due to mortgages and cost of living, etc here in NZ.
Amazing how something that is designed to be “on”the water can sell for 300,000. But once it is under water, it’s worth maybe 3,000. Gotta Love the boat life. 😂
Most of the boats here that barely have any damage on them are people who made claims even though they weren’t supposed to.. when hurricane ian hit, the insurance companies didn’t send adjusters out to every claim because there were way to many claims.. they pretty much just threw money at people and sorted the claims out later .. they did it with super cars, yachts, houses, businesses etc… so anyone that wanted out of their boat, or were upside down on the payments “totalled” out their boats while they had the opportunity
The boats a totaled because they were either sunk or swamped. Every boat in our community marina was a total loss. Some sunk some end up iin mangroves and some yet to be found. Saltwater does not mix with boat wiring meaning even id you manage to get the boat running problems will surface for the remainder of the vessels life. T
Our 2 year old Beneteau GT 32 has been sitting in copar for 4 months, with a flooded cabin, electric exposed to salt water. Engines are fine, Progressive said 50k to fix even though the entire cabin and electric needs to be replaced. No marina is willing to fix it, now progressive says they are getting an estimate. 5 weeks later and they still have no estimate. We got an estimate of 350k, but marina said they would not repair it due to cost to repair and unexpected issues while repairing. I’m not sure there is a rhyme or reason to when they are totaling boats.
WOW!! I'm sorry you are dealing with all that. Sounds like a nightmare. Insurance companies can be so difficult to deal with especially when you need them the most. Wishing you the best moving forward and hope this works out!
Hey!! Do not recall what brand and model of that boat...I think possibly a Four Winns but not 100 % on that. Sorry not able to give you a definitive answer. Appreciate you watching and hope you enjoy your day!! 😊
They now have even massive boats with outboards. They are easier to maintain, swap out, have good power, etc. Just need to design the transom to handle the power but its all possible and leaves more power for the inside.
They get power from a package that was unbelievable years ago. With a 600, soon to be 750 in my opinion once they force feed it that leaves so much more room in your boat that used to be dedicated to motors. The technology Mercury has changed and invented over the years has truly changed the world. That's in way more categories than just boating. They are the unsung Tesla of internal combustion engines.
I had my boat inside my warehouse on a trailer when the storm went through. But now Geico has a freeze on changing any coverages in our area. I tried to increase coverage because I’m adding a Rhodan spot lock trolling motor and they won’t let me make any changes to my policy.
Rich people have insurance and they like new boats that haven't been sunk or damaged. When your that rich a boat is probably the smallest bit of the business you do with your insurance compay. They replace their boats when they can to get back the reliability and safety they paid for.
This was run by Cooper Capital Salvage. Maybe they have more information on any future auctions they may have. Thanks for watching and enjoy your day!!😊
I am a Ajuster and i Hurrricane jobs they have some adjuster work on a precent of the overall claim is probaly why so many boats with minor damage are totaled
@@robertlawler1387 , what's funny, is that we have on this particular boat for 7 years now. And in those seven years, the premiums went down for a little bit after few years and then started going back up again.
It’s easy to overlook the damage that the hurricane force waves and blown saltwater can do to a boat that doesn’t appear damaged. The only way to make these boats ocean worthy is to replace anything electric including the wiring. You may otherwise find yourself out of commission at the most in opportune and dangerous time.
I'm assuming some of the cleaner boats that don't look sunk, probably ended up just up in someone's yard or in the mangroves after the surge went down and just " gently " came to rest. Then when salvaged it could've been cheaper for the insurance to write off the boat. Or owners turned ownership over to salvage companies.....
Weren't that many boats left intact in all of hurricane Michaels path-and this was just one companies auction here. The cost of an outboard is such today that it could be double or more the price of a hull. Rewiring with marine wire could cost way more than most would guess. Insurance claims must consider these issues. That's why they total things that may not seem that bad. They must consider worste case.
Insurance companies were paying off boat claims because they were overwhelmed and just paid them off. The owners decided they didn’t want to be a boater anymore on these nicer boats. In my opinion.

I would check out Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage company's website. They are the company that ran this auction. Good luck! Thanks so much for watching and hope you have a great day!🙂
I suspect the insurance companies are quick to write some of these boats off because they are now "stigmatized" property...ie hurricane damaged, even though that damage may be minimal. It's similar to real estate property. You buy a beautiful property but then later find out a family was murdered there, your property value just tanked. Less people would want such a "stigmatized" property regardless of the price. If I were in a better position I would buy one of those boats. Probably couldn't get insurance coverage as it's value would be so low.
You can go to the auction website Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage company. They ran this particular one and have all their salvage boats with on line bidding. Thanks for watching and hope you have a great day! 🙂
If the insurance companies don't have the bandwidth to scrutinize all those claims like they usually would, owners of lightly-damaged boats might figure that insurance money is the most they'd get for their boat, and it saves them the hassle of repairs. Good for the boat industry, I guess.
I am not certain. You can look up some salvage websites to see if they do international auctions. This one was ran by Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage. Good luck, thanks for watching and enjoy your day!🙂
I'm guessing the insurance companies would rather cut their losses and call a boat totalled, instead of going for extensive repairs (inner workings of the boat like wiring etc are prolly also in need of replacing, and who knows how many hidden weak spots got created), and then running the risk of the boat breaking down again later. which can be linked back to this original damage, so the insurance company has to spend more money to fix it. So that would be my best bet, rather than risking that they have to do multiple payouts to the boat owners cause of hidden damages that can be traced back to this hurricane's damage, they want to do 1 payout to the owners, and hope the boat is still worth something on auction. with a "better safe than sorry"/"cut your losses" mentality?
I have a maintenance and construction business in the north. We can find plenty of people to work. Down south. We couldn’t even find a place to go as in the repair shops are not even there when RV dealer said “we sell RVs but we do not service them“
They total them most often when the engines and/or electronics have been exposed to the salt water. The labor to rewire and to try to salvage engines becomes greater than the value of the boat.

no salvage laws as people commonly and wrongly believe it. The short of it, firstly ownership doesn't change if you salvage it, if your boat is sunk and I go salvage with without permission its still legally yours. I can request a reasonable amount to cover my time and costs from you but, but if you refuse I have to goto specialty maritime court where its determined. There are rules like if I save a commercial cargo vessel that would otherwise be lost I can be entitled to a payment equivalent to 1/3 of commercial cargo If you could just claim ownership of a vessel that floating you could go cut the mooring lines and OH Look its floating unmanned its mine now

Im looking to repower my boat with a 4 stroke. 225 hp. Is there an auction that i may can look for just outboards?
I would check out Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage company's website. They are the company that ran this auction. Good luck! Thanks so much for watching and hope you have a great day!🙂
Where would I look for information on these auctions ?
This particular was run by Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage. I believe Copart does as well. Thanks for watching and hope you have a great day!!🙂
I suspect the insurance companies are quick to write some of these boats off because they are now "stigmatized" property...ie hurricane damaged, even though that damage may be minimal.
🤣 love that analogy!!! You are probably very right! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy the rest of your day!😊
اHOW CAN FIND OUT WHEN AND WHERE THESE AUCTIONS IT'S HAPPING?
You can go to the auction website Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage company. They ran this particular one and have all their salvage boats with on line bidding. Thanks for watching and hope you have a great day! 🙂
How much are the boats going for ?? Are there prices listed on the boats ?
No prices it's all closed bids on line through Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage. Thanks for watching and enjoy your day!!🙂
Bring them to Yuma Az one summer outside and they will be fine !
🤣 Love Arizona!!
Thanks for watching! Enjoy your evening!🙂
What state these boats located?
These boats were located in Cape Coral Florida.
Thanks for watching and hope you have a great day!😊
If the insurance companies don't have the bandwidth to scrutinize all those claims like they usually would, owners of lightly-damaged boats might figure that insurance money is the most they'd get for their boat, and it saves them the hassle of repairs. Good for the boat industry, I guess.
You are probably right That was just one auction I'm sure there were alot more boats out there.
Thanks for watching and enjoy your weekend!
those things you're calling "house boats" are actually trawlers, cabin cruisers, or just cabin boats.
Appreciate your comment and thank you for clarifying!!
Hope you have a great evening!🙂
Where is this boat auction located?? And what's the name of this auction
This one was held on Burnt Store Road in Cape Coral Florida. Cooper Captial Salvage ran this one. Thanks for watching and enjoy your day!😊
Where can I get similar boats like this to bu to refurbish internationally.. im in the caribbean
That makes perfect sense and well put! Thanks for watching and hope you have a great day!!🙂
I notice not too many double hull ruff water boats
Now that you mention that you are right. Good eye!
Thanks for watching and hope you have a great day!🙂
Insurance business is crooked af
😁 Thanks for watching!! Enjoy your weekend!
During a recent visit to Florida, I noticed that it's extremely hard to find any one that fixes anything. Had a break down...total pain.
Sorry to hear that. It's no fun to breakdown, but then not be able to find anyone to work! UGH! Thanks for watching and hope you have a great night!🙂
people no longer believe in working for a living .
I have a maintenance and construction business in the north. We can find plenty of people to work. Down south. We couldn’t even find a place to go as in the repair shops are not even there when RV dealer said “we sell RVs but we do not service them“
They total them most often when the engines and/or electronics
have been exposed to the salt water.
The labor to rewire and to try to salvage engines becomes greater than the value of the boat.
Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy your evening!😊
Where exactly is this? The name of the place,?
This auction was held in Cape Coral florida. You can check out the auctioneer website Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage company.
Appreciate you watching the video! Hope you have a great day!🙂
If there's fiberglass There could be spider fractures and that'll kill it real quick
You are right. You really have to know boats to invest in one that is salvaged. Thanks for watching and enjoy your day!😊
Where’s the location of this boat yard ?
This was held on Burnt Store Rd in Cape Coral Florida. Not certain if anymore will be staged there. Thanks for watching and enjoy your weekend!!🙂
Would be informative to get a sampling of selling prices.
I agree that would have been great. These were sealed bids. Thanks for watching and hope you have a great night!!😊
Did you see any tugs...livaboards?
No we did see any there. Would have loved to though!! Thanks for watching and hope you have a great night!!🙂
Insurance company shouldn't cover the damage bc you have ample warning to move your boat , kind like getting paid to abandon your car on the highway
Thanks so much for watching!! Hope you have a great evening!😊
Are there any sailboats to show?
There were some Sailboats but I don't think we showed them that much. Thanks for watching!! Enjoy your day!😊

Stick with a simple boat like a center console and plan on a complete repower rewire and should be o Kay
Good advice! Thanks for watching and hope you have a great day!! 🙂
At the end of your first segment you go by a large boat and then there is a small boat next to it, that has a Honda motor, center console maybe 10-12 feet long. Do you know what the name brand of that boat? Never seen one of those. Wonder what it sold for. May ask the Cooper people about it even though it looks like it is sold. Great video, always wonder where the boats were.
Not certain what brand that was. Yes, very curious what some of those boats sold for at auction. Thanks so much!! It was an experience to walk around and see all those boats. Thanks for watching and have a great day!😊
@@newfoundfreedom757 Looks like a inflatable dingy. Bet it was fast on the water with 50 hp Honda motor.

How did you find out about this auction?
We were doing some repairs for family and actually drove by the lot. I would think there may be more like this since there are still many boats that need to be recovered. Enjoy your weekend!!👍😊
It's about cost to repair vs value
That makes sense. Can't imagine the cost to repair some of them. Thanks for watching and hope you have a great day!! 😊
I hope you film the auction that would be great ?
That would have been great! I believe this was a sealed bid auction. Would have loved to see what they went for. Thanks for watching and enjoy your evening!!🙂

Our boat insurance renewal is coming up at the end of the month and this has me really dreading what the new premium will be, or if they are even going to renew our coverage.
I cant imagine what renewals for insurance will be both on boats and homes. UGH!
@@newfoundfreedom757 , we live on the coast, pretty close to the beach, and we took a major hit last year in our insurance rates. I'm not looking forward to getting the bad news on that this year, either.
@@ralphholiman7401 I have my fingers crossed for you that the news isnt too bad when the renewals come in. Its dreadful when those come in the mail. Take care!!🙂
Nothing like salt water corroding wires and metals in the motor. Cheaper to buy new , cost more to buy a motor and replace all wires
So true. Salt water does not mix well with those components. Thanks for watching and hope you have a great day!!🙂
Where is this located..???
This had been held on Burnt Store Rd in Cape Coral Florida. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy your evening!😊

How do you find out about the location of these auctions ?
It was on the local news and internet. It was through Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage, they do have a website. Enjoy your weekend! 😊
Sad to see all that damage.
It is. Ian did alot of devastation. 😔
You know boats don’t have salvage tittles you can fix a salvaged boat and sell it as new the only way to find out if it had been a loss is if. You use the same bank that took the loss or the insurence company that did the pay out
Wow! Did not realize that. Thanks for your knowledge. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy your day!🙂
How can I buy a boat there , ?
This auction has been held by Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage. They have a website and all bidding is completed on line. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching and hope you have a great day!😊

I am not certain how all that works but I am sure some people have that figured out. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!!!!😊
Modern boat engine just like cars once wet forget em , repowering them alone very expensive, it's why insurance companies ,just write checks ,bit costs them nothing , they just increase survivor s premium to cover their loses
Unfortunately, you are right. Premiums go up after these devastating hurricanes. Thanks for watching and hope you have a great day!!😊
Where is this located?
This was on Burnt Store Road in Cape Coral Florida. It was ran by Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage. Thanks for watching and hope you have a great day!🙂

do Salvage laws go into effect upon recovery?
Excellent question. The company that ran this is Cooper Capital Specialty Salvage. They may have this information on their site. Enjoy your weekend!🙂
no salvage laws as people commonly and wrongly believe it. The short of it, firstly ownership doesn't change if you salvage it, if your boat is sunk and I go salvage with without permission its still legally yours. I can request a reasonable amount to cover my time and costs from you but, but if you refuse I have to goto specialty maritime court where its determined. There are rules like if I save a commercial cargo vessel that would otherwise be lost I can be entitled to a payment equivalent to 1/3 of commercial cargo
If you could just claim ownership of a vessel that floating you could go cut the mooring lines and OH Look its floating unmanned its mine now
Where is this located
This was on Burnt Store Road in Cape Coral Florida. This auction has ended but I would think more would be held in the future since there are still boats being recovered. Thanks for watching and enjoy your day!!!!😊
