    The single most influential songwriter/singer/guitarist of the second half of the 20th century. No one individual invented rock'n'roll, but Chuck Berry did more than anyone else to polish it and make it the finished article. His music will last for as long as people play guitars.

    Unbelievable.
    Wrote the lyrics. A delightful story which is conveyed it in less than 3 minutes.
    Played guitar, sang and duck walked, facial expressions, shoulder twitches, eye and mouth movements, and all the time excuding a genuine pleasure in his performance.

    I suspect the number of budding guitar players who started out learning how to play " Johnny B Goode " will be in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions !!

    I have loved this performance at "Sammy and Company" from the first time I saw it in television. And "Promised Land" is one of his best songs.

      Absolutely agree Great song!! First time Ive this video . I believe it to be Chuck doing a fantastic performance and the audience was completely enthralled.
      Born in 1926 that would make Chuck to be around 49 years old at the time and to do what he does here is pure athleticism and showmanship.

  • @bluegtturbo

    I reckon Chuck was very conscious of the situation when he chose to perform this song on the Sammy Davis show.
    Both he and Sammy had to struggle against racism and overcome barriers. And the song lyrics are very much centred around the civil rights struggle of the 60s....'had a little trouble, it turned into a struggle, half way across Alabam, and the hound broke down and left us all stranded in downtown Birmingham.....'

    • @ethanellis9875
      @ethanellis9875 4 роки тому +5

      Songman? Elvis never wrote a single song. His name was placed on songs like Love me Tender. His manager wanted Elvis' name on songs because it looked more impressive. This is an original Chuck song. Elvis was basically a cover artist and was only called king because he could shake his hips and was white.

    Absolutely unbelievable! The true King of Rock and roll. Name one performer today who can match this level.of talent.? He doesn't even have one of those stupid ear pieces in that so many of zero talent wannabes wear today. Sinatra, Sammy,, and Dean never had a stupid ear piece either. Oh well, good rest his soul. The greatest.

    Performed in the key of "G" instead of the usual "C", but I think it works well.

      Hes kinda struggling to sing this in G, why they played that in this key?

    • @Hillbillyan
      @Hillbillyan 3 роки тому

      Yes, too low. Chuck used to sing Johnny B. Goode in C sometimes, while in Bb on the original record.

    • @_-_Michael_-_
      @_-_Michael_-_ 3 роки тому +2

      Yes someone told me he switched to C so it would be easier for piano players, and it’s possible since he often toured with random bands and in C it’s pretty ok in Bb it’s different story.

    • @chuckfan1
      @chuckfan1 3 роки тому +3

      @@_-_Michael_-_ not struggling at all. He has a "serviceable" singing voice. Just a kinda toned down version of the song, and him just singing to that

    He's teaching the house band (Chuck famously had NO band on his payroll) how to play the song while he's performing. That's confidence! I firmly believe that Prince was Chuck Berry's secret love child.
