The Dixie Dregs were considered to be a jazz fusion band along the lines of "Mahavishnu Orchestra" or "Return to Forever". Odessy is typical of their sound but they were a very versatile band. They did some country blue grass type songs like "Gina Lola Breakdown" and they also did beautiful classical guitar and violin pieces like "Northern Lights" and "Little Kids". They even had several hit songs on AOR radio. "Take it of the Top", "Punk Sandwich" and "Road Expense" got significant radio play. Steve Morse even opened for Rush on the Power Windows tour. But their record company kept pushing for them to get a singer so they could get more radio play. They auditioned several people and actually had singers on a couple of songs on their last album but they broke up after five records. They have reunited several times over the years. They played a mini-tour just a couple of years ago.

The thing about the Dregs that made them unique among the fusion bands was that they had pop sensibilities. They were outstanding musicians who played incredibly complex pieces of music but a lot of their music had very catchy melodies. They even played on American Bandstand with a singer: ua-cam.com/video/Hl-2KqhtJl4/v-deo.html

I’ve read the comparisons between the Dregs and Mahavishnu Orchestra & Return to Forever… I gotta say, I disagree. Their “Southern” bent gives them a really unique vibe, and they know how to rock! MO and RtF, not so much, although Al di Meola has a talent for great rock ‘n’ roll riffs.

Give the absolutely wild aptly titled Dixie Dregs song "I'm Freaking Out" a shot. Apparently Jaco Pastorious was so taken with the band, a story has circulated that he persuaded a few friends to one of their shows in the late 70s. John McLaughlin, Al DeMiola , Billy Cobham, and Lenny White. FYI. On all of their albums the Dregs were eclectic in the extreme, but retaining their own identity. On most of their albums they did one straight ahead rocker, their version of country/bluegrass, an acoustic chamber piece, a boogie style, and a jazz/rock/ prog epic. All of them instrumentals (except their last album in their early 80s before their first split had two descent vocal tracks). Whatever genre The Dixie Dregs decided to do, it is always done with a panache and unique invention that is all of their own.

Actually Jaco knew the Dixie Dregs from the University of Miami. The Dregs started as a class project. "Rock Ensemble II". Pat Metheny has said in interviews that on his very first day of school he was walking across campus and heard somebody playing the guitar in the student plaza. He said he saw this guy with long blonde hair sitting there playing unbelievably complex fast guitar. Up until that point Pat was the best guitar player he knew but when saw Steve he knew he had competition. They play completely different styles and took completely different paths but Pat and Steve are still friends to this day.

So pleased that you have discovered The Dregs! You have opened up another new rabbit hole for you there. I first saw Steve Morse play when he opened with a solo acoustic set for John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola and Paco de Lucia at the Sydney Town Hall in 1983. No one knew who he was when he wandered on stage unannounced....but then he just BLEW EVERYONE'S MINDS with his playing. He joined the Trio on stage for the finale and at one point McLaughlin stopped playing - his jaw dropped watching Morse rip a blistering solo. Just an unforgettable wonderful moment. I became an instant fan. Keep up the great stuff. Love you guys!

Steve Morse was asked to fill in for Al Di Meola, for the guitar trio including Paco De Lucia an John McLaughlin. Al made the gig and Steve did a one man show to open for them. Steve is one of my top three influences.

This song wasn't a guitar showcase as much as a more balanced group instrumental. Steve Morse was a big fan of the Mahavishnu Orch., so this group had the same instrumentation, but there was also an electric bluegrass flavor to many of the songs. He had to work hard on his picking technique because he was left handed and plays a right handed guitar. After the Dregs broke up he released many Steve Morse Band albums. Once I saw him open as a solo acoustic act at a concert of a later version of the Mahavishnu Orch., when Jonas Hellborg was in the band. When he was young, Jimmy Herring used to follow the early Dixie Dregs around Florida, and learned some of their music well enough that they used to invite him up onstage. Morse also has his commercial airline pilot's license, and sometimes flies his own plane to gigs. Every now and then they get together for a while, and I have this live DVD from 1992 where they had Jerry Goodman of the original Mahavishnu Orch. on violin.

Music Radar: Which musician has been most influential in shaping your approach to guitar?
Petrucci: “For me, it would be Steve Morse. The moment I heard him play I was not only blown away, but really, really inspired to want to do better, to expand my playing and my writing. Then I got to see him play live and eventually meet him, become friends and play with him on G3. He just never ceases to be an inspiration - a positive light as far as sticking with things, having a strong practice ethic, being your creative best, working hard as a musician, pursuing tone, pursuing the craft of guitar building with Music Man… All the things that he does have been really hugely influential to me.”

@@frankmarsh1159 - He was the 1st guitarist decades ago that I saw using Musicman guitars (and that odd wire that used to run from the bridges/pick-ups of his guitars, which I would presume was some-sort of Midi connection for guitar synths?). The original version of Cruise Control is basically the version they used to do live, where, in the middle section, Rod would get a drum solo and would then evolve into a duet with Steve (by the way, very much in the mold of what Mahavishnu Orchestra would do, between Billy Cobham and John M.). Steve would whip out the awesome guitar effects, along with his incredible chops, and the two of them would build it into a huge Prog-Rock anthem! That said, I can't agree that the Unsung Heroes version is "watered down", with all it's negative connotations. The Unsung Heroes version is just shorter, that's all. It's basically an edited/abridged version of the earlier song, but you could argue, given it's more succinct structure, that it's more intense. They still pack a lot of incredible playing into that version and it is nothing but a banger, the opposite of watered down! Just my two cents.

@@frankmarsh1159 I agree. Steve is just a more accomplished guitarist by the time of Unsung Heroes, and the improvements are all over that album. I’m excited for Nick and Lex to hear some of those songs! “Atilla The Hun” is mental, “Kat Food” is blast, “Rock & Roll Park” is a banger and so on! Plus, I’m sure they will love the quasi-Classical works on those Dregs albums; those baroque-structured, contrapuntal workouts, that usually end with Steve ripping sick leads! It’s all so good!

I admit this is the first I've listened to them and I'll be listening to more for sure. Thanks to BMC for requesting and to NicknLex for taking it! I have the same sentiment as Nick, ashamed I didn't listen sooner.
Also, if I can recommend a band: Wishbone Ash. If you haven't heard them, they were one of Steve Harris' big inspirations early on before Iron Maiden was up and running. For the bass playing, yes, but they also were also one of the first bands to have 2 lead guitarists, a concept Steve brought to Maiden. I recommend "Time Was" or "Throw Down the Sword".

This is great! As I'm JUST writing while listening and watching . . .
Lexi my friend (HAHA! Nick "ALAAN HOLDSWORTH!" Drink-up friends!), the connection with "Neal Morse" is the Supergroup "Flying Colors": Mike Portnoy, Dave LaRue (Bassist for the Dixie Dregs), Casey McPherson, Neal Morse and Steve Morse (no relation ;).
Ha! I'm so glad you are loving this guys (the facial expressions) :D. You have YET another rabbit hole. BTW - FIND an audio or video of them performing this track LIVE. I was lucky to see them perform this on their "Bring 'em back Alive" Tour, got to meet the band, Steve Morse and "Steve Vai" who is a huge fan :D.
Note Nick: Dream Theater has partly covered the Dregs "Cruise Control" in the live track "The Big Melody", which is made-up of various bands.
Next, you'll be amazed how "Country"/Bluegrass they can be too! They are an amazing band.
. . . . off to watch the rest of last nights show after this!
    1978 line-up:
    Steve Morse - guitar, banjo
    Mark Parrish - keyboards
    Allen Sloan - violin, viola
    Andy West - bass guitar
    Rod Morgenstein - drums, vocals
(Rod would later help form the band "Winger" but has been Dixie Dregs constant member).

Each Dixie Dregs album features one bluegrass burner, one classical piece, and several progressive rock tracks of varying intensities. Dr. Allen Sloan (Anesthesiologist) played violin on the early albums in the 70s, and Mark O'Connor (national bluegrass champion) played on the Dregs albums in the early 80s.

I have known this song for many years, but It's always a pleasure to listen to it again. Music with violin is special, and I like Steve Morse better with Dixie Dregs than Kansas or Deep Purple. by the way he plays with Neal Morse in Flying Colors. PS: from 1978 to 1989 is 11 years, if you know what I mean :-)

Haha. Yes. I attended a clinic once in the 80s or early 90s with Rod on drums and everyone there were huge Dixie Dregs fans of course. He said at one point when someone commented on how much they loved them, where were you guys when we were together hahaha. They had way more fans after the band called it quits. Never had enough while together. Sad story, but glad they are still getting recognition all these years later. In the 70s I felt special as knowing who they were, owned all their albums and saw them live in 1979.

I had several Dregs albums back in the late 70's and this brings back fond memories. It's been said a million times, but the 70's (and especially 1975) were a great time for new music. It seems the musicians really tried to earn their keep.

Dixie Dregs covers a multitude of genres. This piece was obviously more "fusiony," but they also do rock numbers (Bloodsucking Leeches), classical (Up In The Air with Steve Howe), ballads, and country/bluegrass (The Bash). There's a lot to explore with this band. They would have five genres on each album!

Note, The Dixie Dregs were born out of the early Fusion Jazz/Rock/Prog of the early 70's, such as John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return To Forever, Jean Luc Ponty and all of that stuff! BUT!! And here's a big but: They are from the University of Miami and they bring Southern roots/Blue Grass and Southern Rock sensibilities to the mix!! OMG!!

I've been listening to them for years, and am lucky enough to have seen them twice. "What If" has always been my favorite Dregs album. Nick mentioned that he thought this sounded like Dream Theater, but in fact it is the other way around since the Dixie Dregs came first. Dream Theater got a lot of influence from the Dixie Dregs, and the second song from Dream Theater's "Awake" album called "Innocence Faded" shows this to be evident.

Dixie Dregs are excellent. I've seen them twice I think. I know I saw them at least once at the Univ of Jacksonville. That was on the Night of the Living Dregs tour. They were awesome. And yes, Steve is a great guitar player. Allen Sloan was the violin player on that track. I really like Andy West bass playing too. Their first two albums, Free Fall and What If are my favs, although there's some good tracks on Night of the Living Dregs too.
The lineup on this album, What If, is:
    Steve Morse - guitar, banjo
    Mark Parrish - keyboards
    Allen Sloan - violin, viola
    Andy West - bass guitar
    Rod Morgenstein - drums, vocals

The Dixie Dregs have been one of my favorite bands since I first heard them in 1977. The virtuoso musicianship, the tones of all the instruments, the melodic and rhythmic nature of the compositions, they had everything. As a professional musician and recording artist, my lifetime aspiration was devoted to precision musicianship at their kind of dangerous level. They were always so much fun to go watch, and I've seen them dozens of times. Steve Morse is one of the greatest guitar players of all time

NicknLex, by the way, with regard to just how good Steve Morse is (for context), the second time I saw John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola and Paco De Lucia in concert (after the DAR Constitutional Hall show) was at The Wax Museum, in D.C. On that tour, their SPECIAL GUEST was Steve Morse!! Steve basically was the opening act for the other guys! Then, of course, the Grande Finale of the show was all four of them on stage at once playing the most incredible Flamenco guitar music, along with other styles/flavors of music, you have ever heard!

What fun to see you two react to one of the greatest progressive bands ever. To Lex's question whether this is typical of their sound, every single Dixie Dregs album features what Steve Morse calls "music we ourselves would like to hear at a concert." There is always an intense rocker or two, an almost baroque style chamber piece, a funk tune, a jazz tune, some bluegrass, classical guitar and then the wonderful hybrids, all but two composed by Morse, all combining hooks for the listener with mind-bending chops for the adventurous. They actually have seven studio albums, six in a row then one they did as a reunion, all of them great. Were I to steer you to a few other tracks I'd say "Take It Off The Top"(1988 version), "I'm Freaking Out", "Calcutta" or ANY track from Industry Standard which I consider their masterpiece compositionally. But no matter what songs you do next, you have found another honeypot of a band.

Hi Nick and Lex, it's great to see you've discovered The Dixie Dregs, another absolute virtuoso fusion group. I got into them in the early 80's via their brilliant album "Industry Standard" and have been a Dregs fan and Steve Morse admirer ever since. Would recommend you listen to "Assembly Line" and "Bloodsucking Leeches" which are the first 2 tracks on the album, absolutely brilliant!!! Agree your comments, I'm sure they would have had significant influence on many artists that came after them. Dream Theater definitely, DT covered another great track "Cruise Control" as part of a medley paying homage to their idols released on the Change of Seasons album, they've also covered "The Odyssey". Also FYI Steve Morse does play with Neal Morse in the band Flying Colors, check 'em out. Enjoy and Best Wishes

I LOVE that you finally checked these guys out. Steve Morse has been a favorite guitarist since sometime in 1980-81 when I first heard this album and Unsung Heroes. All of their albums are awesome, though production on their debut was a little thin-sounding to my ear. For that reason, when you get to Cruise Control, please check out the version from Unsung Heroes. Their albums are very diverse, with prog, country/bluegrass, classical, and straight-ahead rock all in the mix. Dream Theater actually covered Odyssey not too long ago. I'm sure you'll enjoy their version as well. Steve Morse also has several solo albums you should check out. On the album "Industry Standard," Steve Morse plays a classical-styled duet with Steve Howe of Yes entitled, "Up In the Air." Personal favorites include: Dixie Dregs (AKA The Dregs): "Take It Off the Top," Cruise Control" (from Unsung Heroes), "Kashmir" (live instrumental cover of Led Zeppelin, "Assembly Line," "Bloodsucking Leeches," "Hereafter," "I'll Just Pick," "Go for Baroque," Steve Morse solo: "Highland Wedding," "Cruise Missile," "On the Pipe," "General Lee" (with Albert Lee). There are so many more, but that's a nice start. Enjoy, my friends!

Evening yu two. What a joy to find a reaction video that covers one of my all time faves. I've been a fan of the Dregs music for over 40 years. I've been fortunate to have experienced this amazing group of musicians 4 or 5 times live with one occasion seeing The Steve Morse Band open for the Dregs. The last time had my wife and i driving down to Pittsburgh from Cleveland a couple of years ago. The pure joy of playing and performing was continually on each of their faces. Interestingly enough the band that recorded what you just listened to was the same that took the stage that night, except for the keyboardist. We decided to stay the night in Pittsburgh and I was absolutely delighted to find that the band and crew stayed at the same hotel. We ended up eating breakfast with the band who were unbelievably down-to earth. So now you need a few more Dregs tunes to be impressed by and I'll suggest a few; First and foremost you will listen to The Bash which was recorded at the 1978 Montreux Jazz Festival. The audience didn't know what to expect from this unknown group and to pull off a piece of pure Bluegrass was stunning. Twiggs Approved would be a nice selection to experience next as Steve Morse and Alan Sloane (Violin) showcase not only talent, but musicality. Dr. Alan Sloan, by the way in an anesthesiologist when he is not burning up bows and strings. Of the of keyboardists that have been in the band ( I believe two have passed away) T. Lavitz was always my fave. I believe he was at least on par with the Keith Emerson's of the world, and he had a sense of humor. To really hear T. listen to Kat Food or Broad Street Strut. However, no matter what your ears in in for a treat! ENJOY!!

Wow you guys found The Dregs!!! I thought these guys were a jealously guarded secret known only to
    us old veteran players, Lol...
Yeah, Steve Morse was at the top of his game with this mad outfit...every album was astounding..Frank Zappa must have felt just a bit covetous to not have had
this guy in the Zappa camp!!
Don't feel embarrassed that you didn't know about this band. They were marginalized and regarded as a musician's group, being exclusively instrumental and also, they crossed genres in an almost
rebellious way, they would do pieces that were real baroque classical composition, pure jazz fusion, and they also always included a few real bluegrass or barrelhouse country hard-pickin songs that would have made Chet Atkins jealous!! They were also a superb funk band!! So, the average ear, even a late 70s average ear, was not quite ready for this. But you can bet the Music Conservatories had The Dregs in high rotation! Lol...
