She was give a man with 'mans body and man's measure' but 'mind had been taken away while head was still left', 'brains had been removed from the forehead' and such. And she herself would have been worth a better man, more handsome, richer and sturdier. As a male myself I guess this is a quite universal feeling women every now and then have, everywhere and at every era of the human history ;)
Considering the fact that Finland was a part of the russian empire only two ceturies ago, it would make perfect sense. And, if i may say, the common ties between russia and finland go as far as pre-christian times. A lot of folk, both russian and finnish, contain certain indicators that could not have come from christianity at all.
It's funny how the bad russians get to be blamed for destroying culture and language of finno-ugrics, when in fact this culture had a great influence on us, russians as well as ours did on theirs. I think that finnish-speaking people will find the expression "Vot i kaalina, vot i maalina" rather unmotivated in their language, whereas it makes perfect sense in russian, and yes, the rest of the song is sung in finnish.

Then they have also a song called 'Aivoton' (Brainless): watch?v=_FcAQlfx384 Which in turn shares lot of text with Värttinä version of 'Vot i kaalina'. This is actually how cultural loans have always worked and are still working in areas with no lawyer activity.
I wouldn't dream of saying that Russia has no nationalistic people - what an odd leap of logic. I am saying, however, that the government of the Republic of Karelia exerts efforts to preserve the various Finno-Ugric dialects on its territory to the extent it's able, given its poverty. And yes, Kalevala is Karelian more than it is Finnish. It was mostly recorded on the territory of Viena Karelia, in the local dialect, which was quite dissimilar from standard Finnish. You want to argue otherwise?
Right, 'cause I DON'T know Russian, and totally CAN'T hear it in this song. Like, at all. :)) Incidentally, there are at least four dialects of Karelian out there, so the boundary between "Finnish dialect" and "Karelian dialect" is quite hazy.
Uh huh. You do realize that the only reason Finns have Kalevala is because the Orthodox church didn't frown as much on shamanism and paganism as the Lutheran one, which EXTERMINATED all such singing on the territory of Finland proper within several generations of everyone converting?

Värttinä thaught this song to my choir in the early 2000's. I still sing this in the shower all the time. It scares my husband a bit. 😂
