OMG! I can not stop listening to this! I feel like jumping around the room. Can't wait to hear more of their stuff. Tight band.

This album is strange, in a good sense. My first contact with Värttinä was the album "Oi Dai", and it seemed magical! How easily it could transport me from my physical exile in a subtropical birthplace to the much-beloved boreal landscapes so well represented in their songs! Then I heard Seleniko, and bought Ilmatar. At the time, I already was an unconditional Värttinä-fan, and was already drawn to the culture they represent. But this album, this first album... it pulled me out of my body, so to speak... this album does not just describe and show the karelian culture and art, but more than that - this album carries the energy and character of the very soil that gave birth to these songs - you can feel the omnipresent weight of time and age-old tradition, you can envision not only another place but another time, a simpler folk with simpler lives, a sucession of generations carrying the old knowledge forward to the next one, keeping alive a very vivid impression of an otherwise forgotten time in history. Värttinä - The First Album has this superb quality of carrying forth not only the very essence of the people they portrait, but the essence of the soil they live upon and the rich, deep, unfathomably old story the trees and lakes have to tell about the unchanging, unspoiled heritage of a people who are there since "always", probably composing songs similar to those compiled in the album, one of my favourite albums in all of world music.

Did you know some (ex)members for long time were embarrassed about this cd? Really sad and ridiculous. I still think in many senses, this is their best one with most energy and love. I saw them in 1997 here in The Netherlands, I was 16 and I became a fan. Few years later I moved to Finland, 10 years, I gave them idea to do fanmail option and I became the fanmail contactperson :D For 10 years I went to as many finnish folkmusic gigs as I could... were good times..

I think it's natural for most artists to be embarassed about their first attempts at art as they become more sophisticated and learn more about their craft. On another hand, it is exactly the spontaneous character of this CD that makes it a perfect expression of the soil and people it portraits! This is crude Värttinä, without exogenous influences, without makeup and fusion elements. Wish they could recognize how precious this is for the foreigner 'connoisseur' of traditional arts and music. It must have been exciting for you to work with the band... oh, well, what wouldn't I give to live in the country from where I import some 40%~45% of everything I hear!
