@@youngeroldie5089- could not agree more. I am 71 and last weekend we took 4 days and did a camping tour of the east cape of NZ including the Motu road - a gravel route with a couple of river fords to cross. Our tent is a Lone Rider 2 person job, great for bikers as you can stand up in it, have room for your gear, and even house the bike in it if you need a dry space to do maintenance.

Great video, I’ve just spent the last 12 minutes nodding
I’ve been riding for 55 years (I’m 71 yrs young) and still enjoy touring with a group, the youngest member being 44 years my junior. Last year I completed the NC500 with them staying in Hostels & B&B. Later in the year, having been to the most norther point, we toured Cornwall whilst camping to tick off the most southern point. This year I’m touring Devon in May, the Wild Atlantic Way in June, the Yorkshire Dales and we’re talking about a short tour in the Lake District
In order to still do this I have had to make some adjustments
I now ride a Honda DCT bike - I have arthritis in both hands, worse in my left and struggle riding all day operating the clutch
My tent can be erected in 1 minute almost one handed
I can’t get out of those small low light weight camp chairs, I have to have a comfy tall chair
My sleeping pad is 3 inches thick and self inflates, the same as my pillow
I use a plastic bottle to pee in overnight, otherwise I wouldn’t make it to the toilet block
Day rides need to be no more than 130miles with lots of stops for “comfort” breaks
Keep doing what you like doing - use it or lose it
Keep the vids coming and stay safe

Well done on the changes you have made at least you are still loving the bike tours. I am planning on Devon this springtime. Yes I was planning on the plastic bottle idea saves a lot of hassle.

The chair I bought was through Amazon and was called “Highland folding garden camping chair - lightweight 2.2Kg…..”
If I were buying another I go for an “URPRO outdoor camping chair with headrest….” They’re not cheap but super comfortable, you could fall asleep in this one

Sounds great! I have an Exped air mattress that doubles as a chair when folded. Low but comfy. I use my bag of clothes as a pillow. I use the plastic bottle too. On the bike I use it as a dry bag for batteries and stuff.

Gotta say, you have given me a lot more to think about. As I am close to (properly) retiring and want to start touring, starting with UK on my own. I am like you, not overly fussed about the camping aspect, but would prefer to do AirBnB, B&B or hotels. I understand that the more storage you put on a bike the more 'stuff' you will take. My idea is to travel light and use cash in my pocket. Yes I am willing to throw money at my touring holidays, it is what I worked for all my life, to live easy. You are right in taking time to plan, as this is probably the most important aspect of a trip. Thanks for giving me ideas. My body is still willing so I might as well make the best of it.

Please do it you will enjoy the adventure, I have not used an air B & B but seen some good reports. I don't see the need to stay somewhere up market as will only use the room to sleep and shower in.

Great video, and as an ageing biker myself a lot of this rings true. Not over-doing it is the key and plenty of stops are crucial to enjoyment of the trip. Luckily I have two fellow riders who although younger than me, both have the same mantra for riding and we enjoy stopping and having a break just as much as the riding itself, we even take a Jetboil with some coffee/tea supplies with us so we dont have to rely on cafes and tea rooms, we can stop where the best views are and brew up when we like, this was a game changer to our touring for us 🙂

@@youngeroldie5089 I would say that a 650 cm³ bike is more than we need. I just bought a used SV650. After I had bought it I found out that it was restricted to 47 HP. I immediately planned to replace the ECU in the winter. After riding 1500 miles on it I'm not so sure. Even on the motorways I've never come close to using full power.
I'm only 66 and still camping. I've become stingy after my retirement so I started camping for free where it's allowed. Maybe I'll try a hotel or a B&B when I've worn out my camping gear. Not likely to happen anytime soon. I feel very comfy in my tent and enjoy making breakfast and meals on my Trangia stove. I also enjoy visiting restaurants serving local dishes.

I retired in Jan 2019 and in 2020 (after restrictions were lifted) I did my first moto camping trip, just a quick overnight to Cornwall and a visit to Lands End. Since then I have been to Scotland several times, the Lake District, North Yorkshire and visited all four of the furthest points on the mainland. I am a planner, I use the winter to work out places, routes, even possible camp sites, then I keep a close eye on the weather in May, June and September, leaving July and August for day trips.. and the rest of the year if the weather allows. I am very much a solo rider, I always have been. It is my nature anyway but also it suits the way I like to travel. I have friends who will smash on for hours and hours, arriving well after dark at hotels or camp sites... that's not for me, I like to have the tent up by 5.00 ish with the rest of the day to relax, eat, read and generally enjoy where I am.... each to their own though and vive la difference!

Hi Neil, I couldn't agree with you more. I hate looking for my place to stay after dark then trying to find somewhere to eat. Once again, great content and food for thought! As I'm new to the scene, I haven't gone on a tour just yet - only long local circuits here in Texas. My first tour will be to visit friends in Albuquerque (one state over) in April. I have planned so many trips with Rever, Google Maps, and Garmin, with the realization that some won't happen for a few years, but that's ok. My next tour will be in the fall to the Ozarks, which is two states away in Arkansas. I'm planning to build up my "touring muscles" to go longer and farther - my plans now are to "stop and stay" each day for no more than 300 miles.

I solved the touring problem years ago.
I've got a converted campervan, motorbike inside.

    Works for me at 68😊

Sounds good David, I almost purchased a van pre lockdowns to convert into a motorhome.
The only problem I have is that I hate driving and at the moment would miss the bike journey on a tour.
I will no doubt have one when I can not manage the distance or a big touring bike anymore. Have to admit I am coming around to the idea more as its the perfect way to travel. If my wife ever does retire from work I would get one so we could do a long tour for a couple of months. Watch this space as I am sure one will be on the drive one day.

I got some pannier inner bags, we have one each and that's it.. Top box is for day bags, waterproofs, bit of shopping.. Pull up, inner bags out, helmets/gloves in the panniers and off we wander with what is, to all intents and purposes, an old style shoulder bag. Game changer!

      @youngeroldie5089  9 місяців тому +1

Oh you lucky man wish I could convert my wife to that idea. She gats most of the space in paniers and we share the top box, I have to take all my camera stuff, a drone and chargers for everything.
If we hired a caravan we have to take towels but the ones we have are massive and thick so have to take those as well.
she don't like the inner bags as she can get more in the panniers without them so that's an extra pair of jeans and shoes.

Motorcycle Touring is our main thing. We prefer to doing our own thing, not in a group. I'm 60 this year and luckily we can now afford a decent overnight hotel and we're looking forward to seeing the Pyrenees this summer.
I'll still rough it on my unsuitable but brilliant MT10. Carol has planned realistic travel days between the hotels. Being my big birthday, we've booked some nice Spanish Parador hotels.

I just turned 70 and last year a friend and I road 1700 mile around the Great Lakes up through Michigan and back down through Wisconsin. This year I want to travel from Kentucky to California. I just bought a 2023 ZX4RR and plan on riding it to the Smoky Mt. to ride the Dragon and getting a sticker. I still do some Moto camping in a hammock. I don't want to ride for more the 4 to 5 hrs. I also have traded in my 2018 Street Glide in for a 2022 Heritage Classic because it is lighter and easier to move about along with being so comfortable. Some good advice there, I basically went camping with my bike for many years and soon decided that a larger tent was needed, one I could stand up in. I like a bit of luxury so found carrying capacity was running out and started towing a small trailer with the bike, no more need for packing gear on the bike itself with a top box for the helmet when stopped. I have had to stop camping as setting up and taking down the tent was becoming a bit much so present trips use hotels or apartments if staying for more than one night. I did find that I went to large tourers as they had an upright sitting position and more comfortable seat. I was getting sore knees and wrists with a more sporty riding position. I did end up having difficulties with the weight of a big bike, when stationary it was a bit much for my legs and with lighter bikes having a less suitable sitting position I decided it was time to get off two wheels. So in 2020 I went out and bought a Can-Am Spyder RT trike, no need to hold it up at juctions and a very comfortable riding position. plus lots of storage with 2 panniers, a top box and a large frunk, I have soft bags that fit these and even your wife would find it difficult to fill them. I have now in fact been doing longer tours since getting this With 2 European tours in the last 2 years and another planned this year. last years trip was almost 4000 miles over 3 weeks with several days off of the bike at one point. I generally plan to miss cities and large towns as I would rather see the countryside than buildings and tourist traps.
I think I could be classed as a mature rider as I will be 71 this year.

Holy moly mate, our thoughts on Moto-touring are virtually identical, especially that part about the Tent (still hunting for the right "tall" tent) and the Hotel staircases. (which are ok as long as i'm not carting luggage). It sounds as though you are now retired, as am I, which for me, usually means I can plan my rides/tours to fit the weather. Note to myself: does my rain gear still fit, it's been long since last used.
Most of my riding mates have stopped riding because of "their age!" or health reasons, and a couple have left the biking world completely, as did my best mate and riding buddy, from Cancer last March at 69 years young.
I've now turned 70 and find myself doing a lot of biking alone. As long as I feel fit, and more importantly safe enough while riding, i'll continue to do so, as i'm very much of the opinion that riding keeps one young "You don't really start getting old untill you stop riding" is my way of seeing it. Ride safe, Steve.

Hi Steve, thanks for the great comment. yes I believe riding is good for us, It makes you concentrate more keeps body and mind active. I am 66 in a few weeks but have been semi retired for some time now. I tour with a small group all around my age but I do want to do a bit of solo touring as well. I agree that tents and camping chairs are a minefield so many to choose but hard to find one that fits all our needs.
So yes keep riding and stay young as you mentioned. Take care and ride safe.

Nice stream mate . For the first time ever my wife has now decided at the age of 60+ shes willing to have ago on the bike . So now i have to find new gear and a group to ride out with . Never mind the cost of some sort cheap accom. So i am really looking forwards to this next summer of some way to staying away over night. In Ireland its not cheap not even B&B it costs around the 100 euro per night . I own 4 bikes a Honda CBR1000F ,Suzuki 1200 Bandit , Kawasaki 550 and a Yamaha FJ1200 .

Hi, you have nice collection of bikes. So glad your wife has decided to have a go, better late than never. Your FJR will be a perfect touring bike.
Yes we have to pay about £100 a night for decent B & B. You can sometimes get good deals at a holiday park Static caravan early and late season. we sometimes pay £50 for a 4 or 5 night stay.

Stopped every hour or so. We had no booked accommodation, just used the iPhone to look foe B&B 250kms up the road. Did a similar trip in 2012. Use it or loose it. ✌️❤️🙏🇦🇺🏍

I’m hoping to get back to some trips, one thing I always did was riding on my own, it is not restful biking with someone who A rides too slow or too fast, B someone who always says how much further or I’m sore can we stop. Well I get sore but don’t stop so you have the right idea my friend. My only worry but I’ve lovely family who can step in is my lovely wife who has breast cancer and unfortunately secondaries. If you want to stay young ride a bicycle as well as your motorcycles. Staying physically fit as you grow old is so important. Cut out all the UPF, carbs and sugar and other crap, lose the gut, eat a lot more protein ie meat and do some high intensity interval training and weights and calisthenics. Get in shape. It will make riding your motorcycle so much more comfortable and enjoyable as you won't suffer from aches or pains. Also you will be a much sharper and better rider as you can control your bike better.
Solo touring is the best. I have no interest in riding with people I don't know and whose riding capabilities are a mystery. Riding in a group, being held up by some numptee continually faffing around would drive me nutz. I like to go where I want and do what I want to do. My time is precious.
I love bicycle and motorcycle camping, especially wild camping. It keeps the sense of adventure and achievement alive. Expensive hotels and other similar accommodation is not my thing. I like to go where there are few people. I'm not a people person. I am content with my own company.
Life still has to be a challenge as you get older. I'm 62, but still feel like 24. I still have all my teeth and a full head of hair with very few grey ones.

@@youngeroldie5089 Thanks for your reply. It's not often I get such a positive one from older bikers, more often just abuse. Sometimes people don't like hearing the obvious and unfortunately I am often blunt. Even if not a biker to stay healthy for many years into retirement takes effort and dedication. I like the story of Joan McDonald who in her late 70s took up HIIT with the help of her PT daughter as she had the usual health issues. Her physical transformation was nothing short of astounding from a rather overweight grey white haired elderly lady to a fine fit less elderly lady. Her story is widely told on YT and I was recommended it by the YT algorithm on the Mighty Health channel. I have been eating the Keto Diet the last 4 years but in the last 2-3 months have started on the carnivore diet. I thought Keto and intermittent fasting eating OMAD was good, but carnivore is on a whole new level. I had a lot more energy and crystal clear thinking most inflammation gone on Keto but eating a carnivore diet I feel so bloody strong and healthy. All the propaganda we are told to eat low fat, whole grains and plants is BS. All the stuff we were told to avoid likes eggs, red meat is complete rubbish. There are loads of channels on YT of people who tell their stories of how they turned their health and lives around eating Keto, fasting or going full carnivore. It opens your eyes as to the food industry, big pharma and NHS wanting to keep people ill and on drugs for the rest of their lives. Shocking.
Check it out there are so many good channels now. The rewards are so good if you can do it. I don't eat any processed or wheat based foods any more, nada and I feel so good not doing so. Anyway mustn't start preaching.
The other thing is lifting weights, not body building but maintaining muscle mass which eating meat helps with massively.
Also very important to cut down on sugar refined and hidden sugar in carbs and starch. Sugar and diabetes insulin resistance is thought to play a major cause in getting dementia, alzheimers, cognitive impairment. Eating low fat food is bad as your body, nervous system and brain all need fat, healthy fats NOT trans or hydrogenated fats. So many elderly people are now getting dementia and I am convinced it is negligent NHS dietary advice the last 40 years. It can't be genetics as our forebears didn't get dementia and dementia is a very modern health condition. I believe it's caused by lifestyle what we put in our mouths.
Anyway I want to give myself every chance of living as long as possible and continuing doing what I enjoy. Dying prematurely would be rather inconvenient.
Hope you find your way that works for you.
      ATB.
